It's been a while since we've seen a true prestige film hit the top of the Netflix charts. Or, at least, it seems that way. Last week we saw Jennifer Lopez sci-fi outing "Atlas" have a strong showing on Netflix, a development made all the more upsetting by the simultaneous success of Antonio Banderas' B-movie "Security," which similarly blew up on the streamer seven years after its initial release. Prior to that, everyone's favorite Ogre, "Shrek," dominated the Netflix charts, while Scott Adkins Dtv actioner "One Shot" also managed to find its own success amid the Shrek-fever of May. All of this seemed a tad desultory and, dare I say, disheartening. Now, though, it may be Poland to the rescue, with murder mystery "Colors of Evil: Red" seeing global success on the service.
The crime thriller is adapted from Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak's book "Czerwień" and directed by Adrian Panek.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise’s collaboration on the sci-fi action thriller War of The Worlds was hailed as one of the most exciting actor-director combinations. The film expectedly was a huge success and earned over $600 million worldwide while gaining a lot of acclaim from critics as well.

Spielberg also roped in veteran actor Morgan Freeman as the narrator for the H.G. Wells adaptation and elaborated on his very specific reasons for approaching him for the film. Incidentally, this blockbuster was the beginning of a serious feud between Cruise and the director that ultimately ended after 20 years.

Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman are going at it again. The duo, who previously romanced one another on the big screen in 2012’s The Paper Boy, will rekindle their chemistry for Netflix’s A Family Affair. Even better, we’ve got ourselves a trailer.
From writer Carrie Solomon and director Richard Lagravenese, the rom-com’s official logline suggests that “a surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex and identity.”

Last year, Jennifer Lopez starred in so-so Netflix actioner "The Mother," in which she sniped her way through wave after wave of bad guys. Unfortunately the film marked yet another moment whereby the streaming age subsumed a former megastar into its nebulous cloud of generic "content." If "The Mother" isn't enough to convince you of such developments, just take a look at "Atlas," the latest Lopez-starring Netflix original film.
It should be said that the trailer for "Atlas" did look promising, but critics certainly aren't too impressed with this sci-fi actioner, which comes from director Brad Peyton ("San Andreas") and also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong. Lopez plays an AI-wary data analyst who quickly finds herself in a situation where she's forced to rely on a synthetic consciousness to survive a mission gone awry. In a reverse-"Blade Runner" scenario, Lopez's character, Atlas Shepherd, travels to...

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.

Brooke Shields has been elected president of the Actors’ Equity Association, the union that represents about 51,000 actors and stage managers on Broadway and nationwide.
Shields prevailed over stage manager Erin Maureen Koster, a stage manager and third vice president at Actors’ Equity and Wydetta Carter, an actor who had been serving as Equity’s first vice president. Her four-year term begins effective immediately.
Kate Shindle had served as president since 2015, but decided to step down after her term ended May 23.
In a video announcing her candidacy, Shields said she wanted to be able to use her star power, as well as her experience on Broadway, to expand the profile of being an Equity member.
“I want Equity to be in the position to command the respect that we deserve, whether it’s at the bargaining table or in DC or in every state house and city hall across the country,...

Actor Brooke Shields has been elected president of Actors’ Equity Association, the union has announced.
Shields took the lead in a three-way race, beating out stage manager Erin Maureen Koster and actor Wydetta Carter. Actors’ Equity is represents 51,000 actors and stage managers.

Shindle has said that she will remain active in the labor movement but now intends to focus on resuming her acting career, noting that the unpaid position of president left her with so little time for acting that she had not been able to clock enough professional hours to quality for Equity health insurance.
Shields’ win was confirmed this morning by Equity, which announced the results of its 2024 Officer and Councilor Election. In total, 45 council seats across all three regions and representing four categories were filled, effective immediately. All terms are four years except where noted.
In addition to Shields, the 2024 officers include Rashaan James II, elected Eastern Regional Vice President; Sarah Labarr, elected Central Regional Vice President, without opposition. And I’m here to tell you that I have your back.”

When it comes to undisputed box office superstardom, it is difficult to look past Tom Cruise. The charismatic actor has proved his impact in Hollywood time and again through iconic blockbusters that have cemented his place as one of the most influential celebrities in the industry.

With Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise went on to create history not just through the film’s record breaking collections, but also reportedly earned a jaw-dropping $100 million plus for his iconic role. While this is a staggering achievement that’s hard to beat, the ball was set rolling 5 decades ago by the legendary Marlon Brando who became the first male actor to take home $1 million for a single film.

Word about the ton is that Bridgerton has once again enraptured Netflix audiences.
Season 3 debuted with its first four episodes last week, attracting 45.1M views — a huge audience for the Shonda Rhimes series.
It’s a bit tricky to compare with Season 2’s audience, since Netflix began reporting “views” in the interim, and it’s split this season into two parts.
The views for Season 3, Part 1 equate to around 180M hours viewed, which is less than Season 2 managed in its own premiere weekend. However, all eight episodes of Season 2 were available at once, allowing for double the runtime to collect those hours. Case in point: Season 2 drew 193M views in its debut weekend, which translated to about 24M views across all eight episodes.
Taking that into account Season 3’s performance is actually quite impressive, even for a series that was already among Netflix’s most popular of all time. It...

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Netflix’s rom-com “Mother of the Bride” and Will Forte crime drama series “Bodkin” led the Luminate streaming originals chart for the week of May 10-16, elbowing past higher-profile competition.
Two buzzy streaming original movies — Netflix’s “Unfrosted” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” — held up well in their second full week in release. The Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Road House” continues to be a work horse for Prime Video, which confirmed earlier this week that a second installment is in development. A surprise on the original film chart was Netflix documentary “Living with Leopards,” which debuted at No. 7.
“Bodkin,” which revolves around a podcast crew that comes to investigate the disappearance of three people from a small town in Ireland years before, moved swiftly up the original streaming series chart, passing Netflix’s “A Man in Full.” The Jeff Daniels’ starrer came in at No. 2 in its second full week in release.

Mark Waters’ latest film, Mother of the Bride, is a rom-com that mingles nostalgia and new twists, albeit with a few hurdles along the way. An Unexpected Reunion The story revolves around Lana (Brooke Shields), an accomplished career woman whose life takes an unexpected turn when her daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) announces her engagement. The twist? The groom’s father, Will (Benjamin Bratt), is Lana’s college ex-boyfriend. Given this setup, one might expect fireworks fueled by

When daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) turns up out of the blue to reveal she’s engaged, Lana (Brooke Shields) can’t believe what she’s hearing. The adventure takes them to a luxury resort in Phuket, where Emma and her fiance Rj (Sean Teale) have planned the entire wedding down to the finest detail. What Lana doesn’t realize is who Rj’s father is, learning that Will (Benjamin Bratt) was the man who broke her heart years ago.

One of the great things about Netflix is that even as it contributes to the slow mediocritization of filmmaking, it continues to broaden our collective cultural horizons. Yes, for every Kevin Hart's "Lift," which inexplicably had Netflix viewers enraptured earlier this year, there's a foreign film or series that we'd otherwise never have a chance to see. Last year, Indian thriller "Jaane Jaan" topped the Netflix charts in the U.S. while Mexican series "Thursday's Widows" saw similar streaming success stateside.
Now, it's Spain's turn. The country has had a mixed record when it comes to its streaming exports. Last year, god awful Spanish slasher "Killer Book Club" somehow had the Netflix charts in a stranglehold, but the country somewhat redeemed itself with the Oscar-nominated "Society of the Snow," which hit Netflix in January 2024. Now, España has delivered yet another Netflix hit with "El Correo" or "The Courier."

There is something very nostalgic about looking back at the shows we grew up with, but the people we looked up to have changed. Some have continued to build their careers and now hold various awards, and others couldn't handle the stress of the industry and have retired.

The Roast of Tom Brady” was the most-watched TV title on Netflix during the week of May 6, and the second-most-watched title overall.
The special, which originally streamed live during the Netflix Is a Joke comedy fest, hit 13.8 million views during the May 6-12 viewing window, a steep increase from the 2 million views that made it the No. 6 English-language TV title the week before, during which it was only available for the weekend. Also recorded live during the festival, Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” held onto its No. 4 position for the second week in a row, increasing slightly from 4 million to 4.3 million views.
On the movies chart, the Brooke Shields-led “Mother of the Bride” quickly dethroned “Unfrosted” in the top position with a strong 26.7 million views — also outpacing the Brady roast. Jerry Seinfeld’s movie followed with 8.8 million views in its first full week of availability.

Tom Brady is the Greatest Of … Netflix’s TV chart.
The NFL star took a foray into live comedy alongside some standup legends for The Roast of Tom Brady. In its first full week after airing live on Netflix, the special racked up 13.8M views, nabbing the top spot among TV.
However, Netflix viewers must really love to honor Mother’s Day, Brooke Shields’ new comedy Mother of the Bride was the top title of the week — just like last year when Jennifer Lopez took over Netflix during the same weekend with her film The Mother.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Being one of the main stars of the 1980’s, famous for her romantic flicks The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Endless Love (1981), Brooke Shields has recently been celebrated by the audience again, as her romcom is now #1 in Netflix’s Global Chart. Even though it’s panned by critics, it can be a perfect guilty pleasure movie for an evening chill.
Its plot centers on Shields’ Lana, whose daughter surprises her with an unexpected news: she’s getting married. The thing is that the wedding is scheduled not only in a month, but at a resort in Phuket, Thailand. However, it’s not the end of Lana’s shock.
After arriving there for the ceremony, she meets her daughter’s groom and his father, who is none other than Lana’s ex who broke her heart long ago. Together they’ll need to organize the wedding and not destroy the children’s relationship with their past.

Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt rekindle a passionate past romance in Netflix‘s new rom-com Mother of the Bride, out now. After their sudden and confusing breakup right after college, these former flames cross paths when their kids (with different partners) wind up getting married to each other. The brand-new Netflix original starring Brooke Shields is all about the mother of the bride, who is usually a forgotten character in romantic comedies. Most of the time, they serve as a parent figure who is pressuring the daughter to consider marriage. The mother figures are usually the conservative ones who want their independent single child to find the right partner to spend the rest of their life with. This Netflix original does a flip and has a mother figure who is the center of attention at the wedding and wants to do the right thing for her daughter.

On paper, Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove share a lot in common. They both began their professional careers as child models who went on to find early success as actors. While Shields rose to fame in late-’70s and ’80s films (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love), Cosgrove made a name for herself in the aughts on small-screen sitcoms (iCarly, Drake & Josh). As young women growing up in Hollywood, they both became cultural touchstones for their respective generations but, in turn, were forced to weather intense scrutiny under the limelight.
In that respect, it seems particularly fitting that Shields and Cosgrove would team up to play mother and daughter in Mother of the Bride, which launched Thursday on Netflix. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), the breezy new romantic comedy follows Shields’ Lana, a widowed single mother and world-renowned...

In a world inundated with romantic comedies that often march lockstep in formula and execution, Netflix’s latest offering, “Mother of the Bride,” does little to break the mold. Starring Brooke Shields as a revolutionary genetics scientist, the film navigates through the well-trodden territory of successful but inexplicably single women finding love in unexpected places.
The Plot
“Mother of the Bride” introduces us to Lana, played by Shields, whose world-changing scientific achievements apparently leave her little time for romance. The narrative takes a turn when Lana’s daughter announces her impending wedding in Thailand, leading Lana on a trip that reunites her with a college flame. What ensues is a dance of flirtation between two characters in their forties, set against the backdrop of a picturesque Thai wedding.
Film Overview
For those ambivalent or indifferent to the charms of romantic comedies, “Mother of the Bride” will likely not inspire a change of heart.

Mother of the Bride unwittingly tells you everything you need to know about it right at the opening logos: the expected Netflix logo and one for the Motion Picture Corporation of America, a company I’ve never heard of that apparently specializes in low-budget comedies, such as Dumb and Dumber, the A Christmas Prince and The Princess Switch franchises, and Irish Wish earlier this year.
Even without knowing their filmography, I would still say this logo tells you everything about the film before it starts because “Motion Picture Corporation of America” sounds like the most generic name for a movie studio ever and Mother of the Bride is unfortunately about as generic a romantic comedy as you can get, aside from a handful of key details that honestly make it worse.

‘Mother of the Bride’ Review: Brooke Shields Says I Do to Netflix’s Aggressively Inoffensive Rom-Com
After “Ticket to Paradise” and “Shotgun Wedding” showed us the different ways in which calamity ensues when planning weddings abroad, Netflix releases “Mother of the Bride,” which combines the essential elements of both those recent romantic comedies into one passable package. The far-off setting emphasizes the lavish and luxe, though the narrative is cheaply woven and fairly threadbare. While “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters’ latest fails to add anything unique to the conversation, it does scrounge up a modest amount of heart when it comes to its saccharine sweet message of never giving up on happily ever after.
Mere seconds after her extravagant proposal, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) begins fretting to her fiancé Rj (Sean Teale) about how to frame their engagement to her judgmental widowed mom Dr. Lana Winslow (Brooke Shields), who doesn’t even know her only child has a steady beau. Weddings are always social minefields. But when your daughter is marrying your ex’s son? How do you assign that seating chart?
Brooke Shields is about to find out in Mother of the Bride, a new rom-com directed by Mark Waters from a script by Robin Bernheim, who penned the Princess Switch trilogy. Castle for Christmas star Shields will appear alongside an all-star ensemble of wedding attendants in the nuptial slapstick comedy, and we’ve got all the hot wedding gossip you could possibly ask for.
“It was a nice film because it was like an actual destination wedding where you really have nobody to hang out with but the other people in the wedding,” director Waters says of the production, which filmed in Thailand. “We were all living in the same hotels and going to the same restaurant, so everyone naturally became friends.”

At the very least, the film is already doing a great job by covering the basis of several generations through its casting choices.

“The Fall Guy” costume designer Sarah Evelyn received the script long before Oscar nominee Emily Blunt was on board to play Jody, an aspiring film director. As Evelyn thumbed through the pages, she was attracted to the idea of how it felt like a classic movie with a prototypical underdog.
In putting Jody’s looks together, Evelyn began looking at ‘80s icons like Lauren Hutton and Brooke Shields. Then, she took stock of some famous female directors’ wardrobes.
“I looked at Kathryn Bigelow and Patty Jenkins, women who direct action. I took a good look at Greta Gerwig because she’s very of the moment,” says Evelyn. Other directors including Agnes Varda also popped into mind, and when Blunt signed on, she too came up with ideas. “She was really well researched and is costume-forward.”
In the end, they landed on a little bit of everyone, including the men and...
