Since its inception in 1977 by creator George Lucas, the Star Wars universe has invited some of Hollywood’s biggest names to participate in telling stories from a galaxy far, far away. On that note, imagine having the chance to star in one of the most iconic film sagas of all time, only to walk away with an unpleasant memory that seemed like it’d never fade.
Can an experience alongside a cinematic legend like Lucas ever be, dare we say, “boring”? Well, for Terence Stamp, acclaimed for his chilling portrayal of the villainous General Zod in Richard Donner’s Superman, a discouraging stint on the set of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace left an indelible mark.

The London-born actor, 85, earlier detailed his less-than-satisfactory experience collaborating with Lucas during the 1999 epic space opera flick.

The Phantom Menace was a glorious success in terms of box office earnings but the movie that was included in the Star Wars prequel trilogy met with heavy criticism for one primary reason. The trilogy, unlike the sequel movie series, seemed juvenile as considered by fans and critics.

Now, a few decades later, the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas came to defend the prequel trilogy. However, fans are not ready to accept the reasoning the legendary director provided. Star Wars is one of the biggest and most successful franchises in the history of entertainment and Lucas was the mastermind behind the visionary sci-fi world which still adds shows and movies in it.

When “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” debuted on May 19, 1999, few movies before (or since) were greeted with more fevered anticipation. Not only was the movie the first new “Star Wars” movie in a generation, but it was touted as the first of a prequel trilogy charting the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Knight fated to turn to the dark side as Darth Vader.
Despite the breathless build up, by the end of that summer, the near-universal consensus was that “The Phantom Menace” was, at best, a colossal disappointment and, at worst, a calamitous embarrassment. Some blamed the decision by George Lucas — directing for the first time since 1977’s “A New Hope” — to start the story with a precocious 9-year-old Anakin (Jake Lloyd). Others railed against the slapstick antics and pidgin English of Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), hyped as the first-ever CG main character in a live-action movie.

Anthony Daniels is parting with his head, and he’s feeling a little hesitant.
The actor, who has played the intergalactic robot C-3Po in numerous Star Wars movies and TV shows spanning over 40 years, is unloading his entire collection of Star Wars goodies in an auction thrown by memorabilia specialists Propstore that will be held next week in Los Angeles.
One of the centerpieces of the Anthony Daniels Collection is a screen-matched light-up head that Daniels wore in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The object, consisting of a faceplate, backplate and neck-ring, could fetch anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million. (At a similar auction involving Daniels last November, another C-3Po head gaveled for almost $850,000.)

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

Planet Hollywood Auction: (Almost) Everything Must Go!
You can’t put a price on memories, except, of course, when you can. And in March, we’ll all get a crack at buying some of the most unforgettable props in movie history at two huge, dueling movie memorabilia auctions in Los Angeles. The biggest, from March 20 to 24, will be Heritage Auctions’ Treasures From Planet Hollywood event, at which some 1,600 pieces — Princess Leia’s blaster, Indiana Jones’ whip, Jack and Rose’s lifeboat door from Titanic — will be on the block. For a mere $30,000, you could be brandishing Moses’ stone tablets from The Ten Commandments next time you’re disciplining the kids. Planet Hollywood founder Robert Earl estimates that the Tinseltown-themed restaurant franchise spent between $20 and $30 million on film memorabilia over three decades and says the lots on sale represent just a fraction of its 60,000-item collection. Thirty-three years after its founding...

Anthony Daniels has been stirringly loyal to the "Star Wars" media empire ever since its inception in 1977. Daniels played the prissy, cowardly droid C-3Po, an automaton built to aid in translation and matters of diplomacy. Curiously, he was programmed to flee from danger, and frequently comments on how his carbon-based compatriots are reckless and foolhardy. He may have a point, as C-3Po is dismembered and reassembled several times throughout "Star Wars" history.
Daniels has appeared inside the droid costume, or at least provided the voice for C-3Po in 14 feature films, not all of them "Star Wars" related. He played the part in "The Lego Movie," for instance. He also voice the popular droid in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," appeared on both "The Muppet Show" and "Sesame Street," starred in the animated series "Droids," and acted in over a dozen "Star Wars" and "Lego Star Wars" video games.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a groundbreaking series, but not everyone recognizes its genius. The show subverted sexist tropes that characterized women as helpless damsels in distress and painted men as their heroes. Buffy appeared to be completely powerless but secretly packed a huge punch. Some people believed that a woman could never be as strong as the Slayer — and some of those people were in huge Hollywood films like the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
The coming-of-age WB series is inherently supernatural, but that didn't stop people from criticizing "Buffy" for being unrealistic. Displays of superhuman strength are common in male-driven comic adaptations like "Spiderman" or "Thor," where the hero's powers originate from similarly mythical or science-fictional origins. But because Buffy is a teenage girl, some viewers couldn't wrap their heads around her capability.

Every movie is a miracle, and few movies are as seminal but also as well-documented almost-disasters as the original "Star Wars" trilogy. From actors almost quitting, to inventing visual effects and barely delivering on time, and much more as the trilogy went on, it's shocking that "Star Wars" has become the cultural juggernaut that it has.
Thankfully, the movies were released, and they became a huge turning point in American blockbuster cinema. Part of why "Star Wars" works as a franchise is that it features a fully fleshed-out world. The galaxy far, far away is one with vast, unique, and lived-in worlds with their own cultures, their looks, and ecosystems. There are countless creatures with intricate designs that make this feel like a real world filled with real people. It's tough being a droid in the "Star Wars" universe. You can casually be blown up at any moment, and people can have your memory wiped for any particular reason. While R2-D2 seems to have taken great joy with his station in life, C-3Po, in particular, has had a rough go of it. He's regularly forced into dangerous situations he wants no part of, and everyone tells him to shut up when he voices his concerns.
For Anthony Daniels, who played C-3Po throughout the whole "Star Wars" saga so far, the disrespect goes even further than what we see on screen. Despite playing a major role in "A New Hope," with C-3Po being the first significant character with a speaking role the audience could latch onto, he wasn't included in a lot of the promotion for the film. In director J.J. Abrams' 2019 film "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker," heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) are searching for something called a Sith Wayfinder, a widget that would allow them to locate a hidden planet called Exogol: the place where the evil Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is hiding out and building a fleet of warships. To find the Wayfinder, however, the heroes must first decipher some runes written in an ancient, forbidden Sith language etched onto the Blade of Ochi. Their translation droid C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) can translate the runes, but the information about the Sith language is embedded deep within his programming, and to extract it, a droid expert named Babu Frik has to wipe out C-3Po's memory entirely.

After the exuberantly happy ending of "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," George Lucas wisely resolved to put our heroes through the wringer in the sequel. Though the follow-up to what was then the highest-grossing movie in United States box office history was anything but a risky endeavor, its dark twists and downbeat cliffhanger ending ticked off quite a few moviegoers. Were they going to line up in three years' time when Lucas delivered the conclusion to his intergalactic trilogy? Of course! But couldn't he have given the good guys some semblance of a win?

The first "Pigs in Space" segment of "The Muppet Show" occurred in the third episode of the show's second season, the one hosted by Milton Berle. "Pigs in Space" sought to lampoon all of the most popular sci-fi tropes of the day, most notably "Star Trek," which was exploding in popularity at the time thanks to endless syndication deals. The segments took place on board a pig-shaped vessel called the Swinetrek, which was commanded by the handsome Captain Link Hogthrob (Jim Henson). Miss Piggy (Frank Oz) played First Mate Piggy, and the ship's chief medical officer was Dr. Strangepork (Jerry Nelson). The "Pigs in Space" segment was so popular, it appeared in 32 episodes of "The Muppet Show" through its fifth season. The segment was revived for the short-lived 1997 series "Muppets Tonight," where it was called "Pigs in Space: Deep Dish Nine: The Next Generation of Pigs in Space."

Keri Russell is pretty recognizable. From the college drama series "Felicity" to FX's spy thriller "The Americans," not to mention a small but key role in "Mission: Impossible III," general audiences know her face. However, fans may not have recognized her in "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker," where she always wore a mask. Though we see her eyes for a bit, that's all we get. If you recall, her character, Zorii Bliss, encountered our Resistance heroes on the planet Kijimi, while they were looking for Babu Frik (Shirley Henderson) to get information from inside C-3Po (Anthony Daniels). Zorii has a past with Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), both romantically and as a fellow spice runner. Though she initially threatens them at blaster point, Zorii ends up helping the Resistance, even turning up with Babu Frik in the battle of Exegol.

Special effects artists are overworked. Perhaps you've heard some of the complaints from the Marvel Studios VFX artists who have to do an incredible amount of work in very little time. The problem has gotten worse over the years as CGI has become more prevalent. However, time was an issue all the way back when 2002's "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" was in production. There were a lot of sequences that required things that didn't exist on the set, particularly in the Geonosian droid factory scene. You know, the one where Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) dodge crushing metal stamps and C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) literally loses his head.
The CGI technology available back in the early 21st century wasn't anywhere near as sophisticated as today's, yet the effects artists at Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) were just as much under the gun...

For the last 46 years, many "Star Wars" fans have likely wondered why C-3Po, a protocol droid that specializes in translation and in human/cyborg relations, would be so afraid. From his own description, C-3Po was constructed to be a diplomatic aide, helping politicians and envoys strike deals and communicate more smoothly. To make that android also cowardly, prissy, and miserable seems functionally counterintuitive. Shouldn't a diplomatic aide droid be logical, forthright, and obedient? Of course, in the 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," it was revealed that C-3Po was constructed by an elementary school-aged Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) as little more than an idle home engineering exercise. So perhaps Anakin wasn't really thinking C-3Po through in terms of on-the-ground governmental diplomacy.

Anthony Daniels, the British actor who plays C-3Po in the Star Wars films, is set to sell his personal collection of costumes, props and scripts from the franchise.
The BBC reported Thursday that Daniels is working with U.K. auctioneer Propstore to offer his Star Wars memorabilia. The collection includes the iconic gold C-3Po helmet the actor wore for 1977’s A New Hope, with an estimated sale price north of $1.22 million.
In all, nearly 200 items are up for sale at the auction. Other highlights include the scripts Daniels used during production — such as his hand-annotated dubbing scripts for The Empire Strikes Back — and even parts from the Millennium Falcon.
“I did rescue those pieces of the Millennium Falcon from a bonfire at the back of Elstree Studios after production finished on Return of the Jedi,” Daniels told the BBC.

This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.
A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.
Nicotero’s fascination with the horror genre stems from his childhood. “I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there was a TV show called Chiller Theater on every Saturday night. C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) will not hesitate to tell you when he's unhappy. From the first time we meet him in the original "Star Wars," through that entire trilogy, his appearances in the prequels and the sequels, and every other place he shows up, he complains. I mean, we love him very much, and being crotchety is kind of his thing, but he really does grumble a lot. Still, the golden droid does have a few pleasures in life. No matter how much he grouses at his little droid buddy R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), it's clear that he loves the walking garbage can. He also loves a really good oil bath. Hey, everyone loves a spa day, right? Especially when you have a bad case of dust contamination.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in the Season 1 finale of “Ahsoka,” currently streaming on Disney+.
There’s a brief moment in the penultimate episode of Season 1 of “Ahsoka” when characters from at least four different eras of “Star Wars” occupy the same scene. The most recent character is Capt. Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), the New Republic ranger first introduced in 2020 on the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” Then there’s the focus of the scene, Gen. Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), first introduced in 2014 on the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels” as voiced by Vanessa Marshall. Presiding over it all is Chancellor Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), who has occupied three different eras of “Star Wars” on her own. She was first introduced (briefly) in 1983’s “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” as played by Caroline Blakiston, then showed up (even more briefly) in 2005’s “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith...

We’ve all had those dreams of what we’d do if we won the lottery. Some people want a big house or a lot of cars, but in my heart, I know I’d spend it all on movie memorabilia. Iconic pieces of Hollywood history go up for auction every year, but a large majority of it is just way beyond the price range of the average fan. Propstore is hosting an auction in London next month, and one of the biggest pieces is the original C-3Po head worn by Anthony Daniels in Star Wars: A New Hope, but it’s just a little bit pricey.
The C-3Po head is expected to fetch anywhere between £500,000 to £1,000,000 at the auction, which puts it out of the realm of most of us. The piece is part of a collection owned by Anthony Daniels, which also includes C-3Po’s hands,...

Have you ever wanted to own the severed head of a beloved pop culture icon? Are you a millionaire with cash to burn? If the answer to both of those questions is a resounding "Yes, now please fuel my private jet," you're in luck! The head of "Star Wars" droid C-3Po, human cyborg relations, will be going up for auction in London next month and is expected to fetch up to £1 million (about $1.2 million).
Okay, to be fair, this isn't exactly the severed head of C-3Po, the fussy golden robot brought to life by actor Anthony Daniels in the nine core "Star Wars" films. Rather, it's the robot head Daniels wore while filming the original 1977 film, back before it was the biggest franchise on the planet, and back before everyone knew they were making something truly special. Perhaps no other film has shaped Hollywood like "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope" has since 1977, which is not bad for a movie whose crew regarded it as a joke during production. George Lucas' epic saga of space wizards, space fascists, and plucky everyday heroes long ago in a galaxy far, far away was ground-breaking in its VFX, yet its story looked to the past. Drawing from a myriad of sources across different cultures and genres, Lucas wove a fairy tale as elemental as any in its depiction of the eternal war between the forces of darkness and light.
Due to its success, the cast of "Star Wars" would forever be associated first and foremost with their roles in the film, sometimes to the chagrin of the actors who had led long and illustrious careers before that. For the likes of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels,...

"Ahsoka" season 1 aired its penultimate episode on Disney+, and it brought a bonafide "Star Wars" legend along for the ride to help set things straight for Hera Syndulla. Before the title card even comes up, none other than C-3Po shows up in a truly crucial scene. More than a crowd-pleasing cameo from one of the franchise's most enduring characters, this was a meaningful and important appearance from the beloved droid.
The episode opens with Hera being put through an inquiry led by Hamato Xiono regarding her mission to help Ahsoka and Sabine, which was in violation of a direct order. Star Wars’ most famous protocol droid C-3Po, and his actor, Anthony Daniels broke a live-action franchise record with his latest Disney+ cameo.
“Did you hear that?” The first words ever spoken in Star Wars and delivered by the iconic Anthony Daniels as C-3Po. And ever since, fans fell in love with his polite, loyal nature and comical bickering with best pal R2-D2.
Over the years, Daniels has been extremely insistent that he’d be the only actor to play Threepio. Because of this, he’s turned in showings in all nine Skywalker Saga films and many spin-offs and other roles.

The penultimate episode of "Ahsoka" sees two stories play out: the potential court martial of Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) from the New Republic and the journey of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) to rescue Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) from the machinations of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelson) and his allies.

According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, the word "cast," merely as a verb, has 11 different definitions. The first verb is the one meaning "to look over," as in "cast a glance at." The second is the verb meaning to project light over something, i.e. "cast a shadow."
It's not until the fifth definition that one arrives at the word meaning "hire an actor for a part," as in "Anthony Daniels was cast as C-3Po in 'Star Wars.'" The eleventh definition is the verb meaning "pour liquid into a mold for the sake of duplicating a 3-D object," as in "casting in plaster."
Back in the mid-1970s, when Daniels was working his way through the audition process for "Star Wars," there was some unfortunate confusion between definition #5 and definition #11. The actor was one of the final actors being considered to play the droid C-3Po, the prissy,...

Since the first "Star Wars" film came out in 1977, the sci-fi universe has continued to spawn fan debate. At what moment did Darth Vader figure out that Luke was alive and his son? Why doesn't Darth Vader recognize R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3Po (Anthony Daniels)? Why in the world would Luke still keep the last name Skywalker when his father Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) might find him? How did Leia (Carrie Fisher) remember her mother's sadness if she'd just been born when Padmé (Natalie Portman) died?
We ask these questions with love ... mostly. One that has always bugged fans (including me) is this: If both Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sir Alec Guinness) and Yoda (Frank Oz) disappear when they die, before becoming Force ghosts, why doesn't the same happen for the redeemed Anakin Skywalker? If you recall, Obi-Wan's brown robes just fall to the ground after Darth Vader kills him.

It's likely well-known to Starwoids the world over that multiple now-famous actors initially auditioned to play the role of Han Solo in George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars." The role ultimately ended up going to Harrison Ford, but Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, and Christopher Walken also tried out. One can also find old video footage of Charles Martin Smith reading for Luke Skywalker, and Perry King reading for Han. While both King and Smith are talented actors, looking at their audition tapes reveals why neither of them appeared in "Star Wars." They simply didn't have a good handle on the material in that audition. Ford, meanwhile, brought a certain "it-factor" quality that made him imminently magnetic.
King, however, wasn't left out of the "Star Wars" loop entirely. In 1981, writer Brian Daley and director John Madden adapted "Star Wars" into a 13-episode radio serial that broadcast on Kusc in Los Angeles. The...

The most rudimentary research into the creative origins of the groundbreaking 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars" will reveal to the reader that creator George Lucas was inspired by "Flash Gordon" serials from the 1930s, as well as Akira Kurosawa's 1958 epic "The Hidden Fortress." Kurosawa's film famously opened with two clownish characters (Kamatari Fujiwara and Minoru Chiaki) who aimed to earn their fortune as samurai. After several misadventures, the peasants unwittingly become embroiled in a much larger plot about a missing princess (Misa Uehara), a war, and a brave protective warrior (Toshiro Mifune). "Star Wars" borrowed that film's structure, introducing audiences to its sci-fi action through the eyes (lenses?) of the robotic characters C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) and the non-humanoid R2-D2.

It's a longstanding joke — and reality — that non-fans frequently confuse the franchise titles "Star Wars" and "Star Trek." This seems preposterous to devotees of either, many of whom will go on at great length about how completely different they are in terms of themes, outlook, technology, and tone. They may argue that "Star Wars" is a science fantasy with mystical knights who have laser swords and magic powers that leans heavily into destiny and predestination. Or that "Star Trek" is science fiction with extrapolated future technology and humans driving their own destiny. In the broadest strokes, that's true, but as a wise old Force Ghost once said, "You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."
A closer examination reveals that as both franchises have grown and sprawled they've increasingly rubbed up against one another and exchanged some cinematic and narrative DNA,...

A phenomenon familiar to those in England, but perhaps obscure to those elsewhere, is the notion of the Page Three Girl. In 1970, the lascivious supermarket tabloid The Sun, a paper run by Rupert Murdoch, began running photographs of up-and-coming models, usually topless, on page three. The photos became so popular that other tabloids like the Daily Mirror and the Daily Star followed suit. The models featured became known as Page Three Girls, and some of them became minor celebrities for their spreads. Page Three Girls, of course, sparked an enormous amount of controversy. From this author's own childhood recollections, some tried to pass off the topless pictures phenomenon as a bit of harmless, sexy fun folded into a newspaper that was already completely lacking in credibility anyway. Others objected to the outwardly prurient nature of the nudie pictures, pointing to them as a prime example of widespread sexism and the commodification of women's bodies.

“I was a genre kid, I was a little goth kid. I was all about sci-fi and fantasy and this was always the pinnacle of everything,” reveals director/producer Deborah Chow about what leading the creative team behind “Obi-Wan Kenobi” meant to her.
