Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan forecasts Furiosa to finish its run with...

Will Smith’s latest action film Bad Boys: Ride or Die seems to have hit it big at the box office. The fourth installment of the action film franchise which made Smith a star reportedly had a great opening weekend of $104 million at the international box office. The film also starred Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, and Eric Dane in lead roles.
The film is Smith’s first release since 2022’s Emancipation, which was on the heels of the infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony and he even resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die’s box office performance implies that the slap was not as big of a career-ender.

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

Speculations swirled about Mel Gibson’s return to the Mad Max saga, particularly with rumors suggesting Furiosa might entice his comeback, but these hopes were dashed soon after the audience saw the movie.
Despite Mad Max: Fury Road revitalizing the franchise, Gibson wasn’t tapped to reprise his role as Max Rockatansky, instead, Tom Hardy took the reins, while Charlize Theron played Imperator Furiosa.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga returned to the wasteland and the grungy dystopian environment fans loved in 2015’s Fury Road. Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy took over the role of young Furiosa from Charlize Theron and the film explores her origins and adventures over 15-20 years.

As Dementus put it, hate is “one of the greatest forces of nature.” But he did miss just how closely hope can be tied to it – and George Miller has displayed this in a pretty incredible way, casting a bullied teen in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you remember, Quaden Bayles appeared in a heartbreaking viral video back in 2020, expressing how hurt and despondent he was over being teased for his dwarfism. But now you can see him as War Pup (master of the Bommy Knocker) in Furiosa, showing that hope should always win out over hate.
Alongside Quaden Bayles, George Miller also cast Sean Millis, a singer with Hunter’s Syndrome, in Furiosa. Millis, like far too many, was also bullied online for his looks, with rather disgusting comments hurled at him over his appearance. Directed by Miller from a screenplay he crafted with Terry Hayes and Brian Hannant, The Road Warrior – which is also known as Mad Max 2 outside of the United States – has the following synopsis: After avenging the death of his wife and young son at the hands of a vicious gang leader, Max drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Thanks to photorealistic tech advancements, George Miller evolved his approach to VFX on the “Mad Max” franchise in the nine years since “Fury Road.” Which is why he was much more comfortable using CG in post on “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” His thrilling stunt-driven chase sequences were shot in-camera with as many practical effects as possible, but CG enabled him to achieve greater dynamic energy while enhancing his stylized world-building.
Back from “Fury Road” was production VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson of Dneg, who was eager to play with a bigger digital toolbox. This not only encompassed more realistic fire, water, dust, and smoke but also allowed the VFX team to extend the Wasteland desert landscape and skies and embellish the newly created Gas Town and Bullet Town environments. Plus, they were able to replace or augment the iconic vehicles (especially the multitude of motorcycles) for the action set pieces.

With the underwhelming box office of the latest film in the decade spanning Mad Max franchise, Furiosa, there may be no more of these wonderful, experimental, and auteur-driven action films made. That is a shame. But we can dream. As did this anonymous artist-designer who reimagined what the O.G. vehicle stunt spectacular auteur, Buster Keaton, might have made in the 1920s. Either way, it is pretty clear Silent-Era cinema masterpiece, The General, was a major influence on the Max Max franchise; particularly so as George Miller leaned more and more into vehicular...

With legacy sequels being all the rage in Hollywood, it’s within reason to imagine that perhaps a world exists where George Miller asks Mel Gibson to return for a new ‘Mad Max’ film in the future. It's easy to blame spin-offs for trying to cash in on popular franchises. The worst of them rely too much on what came before and offer nothing of their own. But the best of them find an unusual perspective, create new circumstances for familiar characters, or invent new characters for a familiar universe.

Science fiction cinema came of age in the 1950s, beginning an ascent out of the drive-in schlock market that culminated in the boldly experimental yet still commercially viable efforts of the 1960s. That fed directly into the next decade, with sci-fi in the 1970s taking on (for the most part) the same subversive attitude as most other movies made during that era.
But sci-fi movies also entered blockbuster territory in the ‘70s as demonstrated by the massive success of films like Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Logan’s Run, and Alien. The studios realized that sci-fi could be a cash cow, and as the 1980s dawned, decided to ramp up their genre output, not to mention their budgets, with elaborate visual effects, bigger stars, and more action—even if some of the more cerebral concepts espoused in the earlier decades’ films took a bit of a back seat.

Let’s face it, Quentin Tarantino’s truth bombs have always been intricate and delightful as the legendary director hardly refrains himself from making bold comments on anything related to movies. About 8 years ago, the director gave an eye-opening statement on movie ticket prices and it appears to be relevant even today.

George Miller’s epic Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now playing in theatres. Godzilla Minus One was released in late 2023, and fans around the world have had the opportunity to see it and enjoy this masterpiece of Japanese cinema. The film was a smashing success, and it also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, after having triumphed in Japan and Asia. And while the movie was truly amazing, without a doubt, what surprised everyone was that the movie – which earned $115.8 million globally – was made with, as it seems, less than $10 million! Initial reports suggested a budget of $10 to $12 million, but in a recent interview, legendary Japanese video game developer and producer Hideo Kojima revealed that the budget was even smaller, and he claims that the key to the movie’s success lies there!

George Miller‘s Mad Max franchise has left an indelible mark on Hollywood, transforming from a low-budget B-movie into a beloved and enduring series. The original Mad Max (1979) gained a cult following for its gritty, high-octane action and post-apocalyptic vision. The trilogy that followed, featuring Mel Gibson as the titular character, cemented the franchise’s status as a cult classic. But it was Miller’s 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, that truly showcased his mastery of the franchise. After nearly three decades away from the series, Miller brought new energy and vision to the table, casting Tom Hardy as a new...

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.
Original Post:
The box office outlook for George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks pretty bleak. In my box office predictions, I anticipated the film being beaten by The Garfield Movie in its second weekend, but I didn’t think John Krasinski’s If, in week 3, would manage to overtake it at the box office. In a not-so-surprising twist, Sony's 'The Garfield Movie' overtook Warner Bros.' Mad Max prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' to claim the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend. After an underwhelming Memorial Day weekend, the lazy, lasagna-loving cat pulled in $14 million from 4,108 theaters for a solid $51.5 million total after two weeks, bringing its worldwide gross to $152 million. Not a bad deal considering the film's $60 million price tag.
Meanwhile, 'Furiosa' fell to third place with $10.7 million, bringing the films domestic haul to a disappointing $49.6 million. Warner Bros.' had high hopes for George Miller’s action epic, with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth headlining, and it has fared slightly better overseas with $64.7 million for a $114 million worldwide total. But like its predecessor, 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' its path to profitability looks increasingly rocky with a budget of $168 million. Wedged between 'Garfield' and 'Furiosa' was John Krasinski's family film flick 'IF.' The Paramount release collected $10.8 million in its third week for an $80.4 million domestic tally.
Notable new releases over the weekend include 'Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,' the big screen anime adaptation of the popular manga with $3.5 million, and IFC Films’ slasher flick 'In a Violent Nature,' which brought in $2.1 million.
Overall, it was another disappointing weekend at the movies. With no major new releases, the total box office was down a sobering 65% compared to the same weekend last year. After an encouraging post-pandemic season in 2023—fueled by the blockbuster duo of 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer'—it’s a grim start to the summer movie season, with year-to-date revenues trailing 2023 by 24% so far. Hollywood is hoping the worst is behind it, though, as June and July have some (hopefully) guaranteed hits with Pixar’s 'Inside Out 2,' Illumination’s 'Despicable Me 4,' and the year's only Marvel movie, 'Deadpool & Wolverine.'

Chris Hemsworth is a busy man. Since temporarily hanging up his cape and hammer following Taika Waititi's Thor: Love And Thunder, the Aussie action hero has returned as Tyler Rake in explosive Netflix sequel Extraction 2, strutted his Dementus stuff in George Miller's epic Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and found time to lend his voice to a certain Optimus Prime in Josh Cooley's upcoming robots-in-disguise origin story Transformers One. And clearly the Autobot experience has been an, er, transformative one (sorry!) for Hemsworth. As reported by Deadline, the actor is currently in talks to lead Paramount's as-yet-untitled Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the newest addition to the Mad Max franchise, and the film has never looked as grim and exhilarating at the same time in the series’ history. The film is a treat for every viewer who craves action and an immersive storyline at the same time. Despite the current film being a prequel series, Miller has not held back in creating a violent world as he goes all out in creating a post-apocalyptic world.

Despite having a disappointing run at the box office, Miller has done justice to the film, because he had decided to showcase every dehumanizing feature in the film. However, the director decided to ignore one tragic backstory that would have added to the protagonist’s tragedy.

George Miller’s Mad Max franchise is one of the most revered action franchises of all time. After it spun out the Tom Hardy-starrer Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, all we got is a prequel about the character Furiosa. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, two immensely popular actors, the movie made its debut with rave reviews but has been struggling at the box office.

And while the two franchises share little similarity, the fate of Solo seems to predict that Furiosa was deemed to fail.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is that we have touched bottom for the summer, and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday, and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at $80 million.

The prequel to the 2015 film, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a film directed by George Miller starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. It’s another mesmerizing chapter of the Mad Max saga that has continued to captivate audiences since its debut in 1979.
The original Mad Max, apart from skyrocketing Mel Gibson to fame, revolutionized American B-series cinema by creating a futuristic yet low-budget movie – a germination of ideas that other productions were quick to take advantage of.
Then came 2015 when George Miller decided to resurrect this title, providing a completely fresh experience while still abiding by the essence of the 70s movie. Now, we have this second installment, maintaining the original spirit but splashes even more action onto the screen – just what the audience craves.

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.

“The Garfield Movie” clawed its way to first place, overtaking last weekend’s champion “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” at the domestic box office.
This weekend (unlike last) wasn’t a nail-biter as “Garfield” effortlessly pulled ahead with $14 million from 4,108 theaters in its second weekend of release, while “Furiosa” trailed in third place with $10.7 million from 3,864 venues in its sophomore outing. Now, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” has grossed $51.5 million in North America and $152 million globally to date. It’s a solid showing for the $60 million-budgeted film. “Furiosa,” the fifth entry in Warner Bros. and director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, has generated $49.6 million domestically and $114 million worldwide. With a $168 million price tag, the R-rated tentpole has a much steeper path to profitability.

After his blockbuster stint with Marvel, Chris Hemsworth has set his sights on another big franchise. The Thor actor has lent his voice to the now-famous character of Optimus Prime from the Transformers film series in an animated film that is due to hit screens in September 2024. In addition, the actor will also reportedly be involved in a crossover Transformers/G.I. Joe film that is currently untitled.

The Mad Max franchise is unarguably one of the most popular action franchises of all time, created by mastermind George Miller. While the star power connected to it — which includes notable names like Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Mel Gibson — is one factor behind its epic success, its breathtaking action sequences and stunt scenes further set the saga apart from every other.

The Mad Max films by George Miller created a new revolution in cinema and cemented the director’s place as one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers alongside the likes of George Lucas who also pioneered an iconic franchise with Star Wars.
