Plot: A sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low-level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.
Review: Spies, conspiracies, double agents, and cyberterrorism. Remember when these were quaint plot devices on screens, big and small? It feels like a streaming service debuts a new espionage story every few weeks. Some try to upend convention while others stick frustratingly close to formula, but few seem to break outside the box to do something unique with the genre. The Night Agent, based on the best-selling novel by Matthew Quirk, plays like an extended origin story that mines a tried and true plot without really uncovering any gems. Despite solid chemistry from the leads and a couple of surprising supporting performances,...

The teaser trailer for The Night Agent begins with a phone ringing in the depths of the White House. An FBI agent looks shocked that someone’s calling this emergency line since it never rings. The agent answers it and finds himself plunged into a terrifying conspiracy.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Shawn Ryan describes The Night Agent, based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, as All the President’s Men with car chases. Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Ryan teased, “If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then The Night Agent is for you.”
Ryan also confirmed that FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) is just a well-trained man, not a superhero. “He’s very much an underdog in the middle of all this. He’s someone who, when he’s in a fight,...

Into the Badlands, Season 1
Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar
Aired Sundays at 10pm (Et) on AMC
With The Walking Dead going six seasons strong and counting, AMC, an immensely popular and successful network, clearly has no qualms about getting its hands a little dirty. If there is quality television to be made out of material that would fit right in with good old-fashioned grindhouse motion pictures, AMC is ready and willing to capitalize on it. If the zombie apocalypse is not one’s cup of tea, then perhaps a trip Into the Badlands is. Taking several cues straight out of the old fantastical martial arts adventures that were all the craze in the 1970s, the show, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, relishes in telling a reasonably large scale action-drama set in a world where severe punishment comes at the tip of a sword or the landing of a bone crunching kick.

A few developing threads this episode have great potential to reverse this trend, but...

Spoiler alert: The Oct. 14 episode of Sons of Anarchy, "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em," ended with Juice (Theo Rossi) face-to-face with Jax (Charlie Hunnam) after he tried to make an ill-advised deal with Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) offering intel on Samcro in exchange for help getting into Mexico. Episode director Guy Ferland—who's helmed many memorable hours of Soa including "The Pull," "Albification," and season 7's "Poor Little Lambs"—phoned EW from the set of Gotham, where he's in the director's chair this week, to talk about filming Juice's betrayal, that East Dub ambush, and Gemma's breakdown. Sons of Anarchy Season 7, Episode 4, “Poor Little Lambs”
Directed by Guy Ferland
Written by Kurt Sutter
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm on FX
Sons of Anarchy just broke its own record for erasing any and all good will shortly after amassing it. Episodes two and three of this season are examples of how to properly build up excitement and suspense for the story to come, and here the show ruins all of that hard work in a matter of minutes. Once again, after multiple examples across the history of the show, an entertaining episode filled with well-executed character building and excitement is undermined by the unnecessary and senseless killing of female characters.
But first, the positive side of things as they stand. “Poor Little Lambs” is chock full of guest stars, from returning favorites to new cameos. Courtney Love appears as a preschool teacher at Abel’s school who extends a...

The Strain, Season 1, Episode 8, “Creatures of the Night”
Written by Chuck Hogan
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on FX
Often in serialized television, some of the best episodes come when the action is narrowed down and focused on a specific character (as in “Two Boats and a Helicopter” and “Guest”, in the ongoing first season of The Leftovers) or location (as in “Fight”, the recent hotel room-set episode of Masters of Sex). “Creatures of the Night” is a rather effective combination of the two, resulting in a quasi-bottle episode largely taking place in a gas station as Eph, Nora, Jim, Setrakian and Fet(!!!) star in their own mini horror story, an hour of fun TV.
It is often reminiscent of some of the better action-oriented episodes of The Walking Dead, which makes sense because the episode is directed by Guy Ferland, who has been behind the camera for many Dead episodes.

The Bridge Season 2, Episodes 6 & 7 “Harvest of Souls”/”Lamia”
Written by Evan Wright (“Harvest of Souls”) and Dre Alvarez & Anna Fishko (“Lamia”)
Directed by Guy Ferland and Adam Arkin
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
There have been unfair comparisons made in the past between The Bridge and The Wire, but there’s no way not to invoke the latter during the last two episodes of The Bridge, which have seen various characters from both sides of the border crossing paths, at times seemingly at random. And like it often did with The Wire, The Bridge‘s use of this narrative device serves a useful purpose outside the plot: it narrows the show’s scope a bit, adding a bit of focus to a sprawling world rich with diverse characters that would otherwise feel like a random collection of stories only related by geography. The more characters on The Bridge enter each other’s lives,...

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 23 – “Art in the Blood”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
Fans of the Sherlock Holmes mythology will not be surprised to see that Mycroft is, in fact, working for MI6. While it is the reveal that many people were probably expecting and one that makes total sense given the hints of Mycroft’s backstory we’ve seen this season, I was still holding out hope that Robert Doherty and his team had something slightly different in their arsenal. Elementary, after all, has done a fine job of loosely adapting Conan Doyle’s work in a contemporary setting, taking certain liberties that have really paid off in the long run. It doesn’t make the decision to use Mycroft in this way disappointing, but I wonder if the character could have remained compelling without having to get the British secret service involved.

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 13: “Witch Hunt”

Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Are we back in season one of Once Upon a Time? Because that’s what “Witch Hunt” feels like. The magic is there. The suspense is palpable. Plot twists loom around every corner and even humor is present and accounted for.
The episode follows the standard Once format; it tells a story in present day and relives scenes from a year ago (when our beloved characters were transported back to the Enchanted Forest). Even though the episode follows the standard format, it doesn’t become boring. The writers have realized what works, what keeps peoples’ attention, and what keeps the adrenaline flowing.
Originally Once Upon a Time focused on Jennifer Morrison’s Emma, Lana Parrilla’s Regina, and Ginnifer Goodwin’s Snow White. This week, Goodwin...

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 16 – “The One Percent Solution”
Written by Bob Goodman (story by Bob Goodman & Craig Sweeny)
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
On the spectrum of tonal heaviness, Elementary usually leans to the lighter side of things, but it’s rarely as light as “The One Percent Solution” is. In a way, this is a very unusual episode of the series, especially amid a season that has taken steps to become more serious than its fun debut season, which could occasionally enthrall. “The One Percent Solution” doesn’t exactly suffer because of this, since the almost slapstick comedy lands fairly well. Additionally, bringing back Lestrade for this episode makes the detour more enjoyable to take part in. Yet, it still manages to feel out of character, which is even more odd when you consider that Craig Sweeny (one of Elementary‘s executive producers and...

Mob City, Season 1, Episode 6, “Stay Down”
Written by Frank Darabont and David Leslie Johnson
Directed by Frank Darabont
Aired Wednesdays at 9pm (Et) on TNT
Mob City has had much too short of a first season, only 6 episodes, but every minute of those episodes have been used wonderfully. In every respect, the show is, simply put, stunning. From episode one, Mob City has done many things right, from the atmosphere to the writing and finally to the casting choices. “Oxpecker”, the night’s first episode, does something very interesting. Anyone who’s familiar with mob history knows where Sigel and Cohen ended up (Sigel died bloody in his girlfriend’s living room and Cohen died in bed at 62), but Mob City doesn’t try to change their stories or rewrite what we know is coming for the sake of drama.

Mob City, Season 1, Episode 4, “His Banana Majesty”
Written by David J. Schow

Airs Wednesdays at 9 pm(Et) on TNT
Mob City made a big, bold first impression with its two episode premiere, giving the rest of the season a lot to live up too. Fortunately, “Red Light” and “His Banana Majesty” highlight all the things that made the first two installments so entertaining, so fabulous, and so undeniably good.
“Red Light” is the most overtly brutal and violent of the first three episodes but most of this is handled rather elegantly. For example, the dazzling carousel shootout scene towards the end of the episode is over the top and maybe even a little silly and macabre, but it fits the dark comedy often found in certain noir pieces, especially those by writers like James Ellroy.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 9 – “On the Line”
Written by Jason Tracey
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
Conflict is, no doubt, the major source of drama in a story. Where conflict comes from, though, differs widely between stories. Often in serialized television shows, conflict is external, where a group of characters will have to deal with some new force in the space of an hour’s worth of viewing. Elementary almost always does this. On top of that, it almost always has additional, internal conflict. And very rarely will that internal conflict reprimand its two central characters in a way that makes us question whether or not what they’re doing is “good” (based on our own definitions of that). “On the Line” is one of those rare episodes. In comes Chris Bauer (Andy from True Blood) to help consult with the consultants, Sherlock and Joan,...

Once Upon A Time, Season 3, Episode 7: “Dark Hollow”
Written by Kalinda Vazquez & Andrew Chambliss
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
What do Belle, the Blue Fairy, Jiminy Cricket, and the seven dwarfs have in common? This week’s opening of Once Upon a Time. The first few moments of “Dark Hollow” not only excite, they almost make us forget the horrific pacing that has plagued this season.
This episode kicks off informing us what took place right after the group departed for Neverland. Sadly, even with some quick thinking from Belle, other followers of Pan’s manage to make it into Storybrooke. By far the Storybrooke side of the episode is the more exciting of the two. Perhaps it’s because we have not seen these characters for some time, or maybe it’s that Neverland is starting to get a tad bit boring.

Sons of Anarchy, Season 6: Episode 9 – “John 8:32″

After finally managing to craft something kind of interesting out of Tara’s fake pregnancy plot last week, Sons of Anarchy is beginning to make the exponential climb to its season six climax.
