David McCallum, who starred as Illya Kuryakin alongside Robert Vaughn’s Napoleon Solo in the 1960s hit spy drama “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and had a supporting role as pathologist Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on the top-rated series “NCIS” decades later, died Monday of natural causes in New York City. He was 90.

Andrew V. McLaglan's 1963 film "McLintock!" is a loose Western adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" (c. 1592), a problematic play to say the least. The story of Shakespeare's play involves a willful and bitter young woman named Kate who refuses to settle down and get married. This upsets Kate's younger sister Bianca, as she will not be permitted to marry until Kate is married. A man named Petruchio is hired to, as the title says, tame the shrew, transforming an outspoken and willful woman into a dutiful wife. By the end, he does. One can easily see the play's misogynist leanings. Critically speaking, one might be able to see a satire at play, however. Or perhaps it's merely sexist.
"McLintock!" is equally tetchy, with John Wayne playing the Petruchio role, and Maureen O'Hara playing Kate. The story was altered somewhat to explain that Kate and Petrucho, called G.

This mid-60s detective story has the right ingredients — a good mystery and interesting characters. David Jannsen gets to play a ‘Bosch’- style lone wolf investigator given a public thrashing for a ‘mistake’ that he knows was no mistake at all. Can a ‘bad cop’ redeem himself? The parade of mid-level guest stars — Stefanie Powers, Joan Collins, Lillian Gish, Steve Allen — may resemble a TV movie, but the tense show has a good feel for Los Angeles and the new swingin’ singles lifestyle. It might be Buzz Kulik’s best job of direction, and it has a great music score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Athena's desire to become a police officer was always rooted in the disappearance of Tanya Kingston. And now, some forty-five years later, the case comes full circle for her, as Tanya's disappearance and death are brought to her doorstep yet again.
9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 3 dives into the aftermath of the revelation that someone buried Tanya's body beneath her childhood home. And It's a jaw-dropping reveal that shocked Athena, Bobby, and viewers.
It's an emotionally taxing hour, anchored by powerful performances across the board that give a real sense of this storyline's pain, anger, and complexities.
TV Fanatic was honored to speak with Angela Bassett and Peter Krause separately to talk about this hour and 9-1-1 as a whole. The veteran actors were lovely to talk with, and I appreciated their candor. Enjoy this one, fanatics!

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. John Forsythe and Marlo Thomas hosted the 34th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1982 — before cable TV and streaming services took over and network TV still ruled the small screen. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1982.
One of the most celebrated dramas of all time set new records and dominated the acting categories. “Hill Street Blues” received 16 major nominations, breaking the two-decade record of 14 for “Playhouse 90” in 1959. It’s also the first series to receive nine acting noms in one ceremony. It would end the evening tied with “Fame” for the most wins with four, including Best Drama Series, a writing win (it received four out of the five bids in that category) and two acting trophies.

Watch the trailer:
Beginning just before his debut as Frankenstein’s creation, “Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster” compellingly explores the life and legacy of a cinema legend, presenting a perceptive history of the genre he personified. His films were long derided as hokum and attacked by censors. But his phenomenal popularity and pervasive influence endures, inspiring some of our greatest actors and directors into the 21st Century – among them Guillermo Del Toro, Ron Perlman, Roger Corman & John Landis all of whom and many more contribute their personal insights and anecdotes.

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster is a gloriously enjoyable retrospective of the legendary actor, who is forever tied to the horror genre and the monster role of Frankenstein’s monster, which first brought him fame. The film, directed by Thomas Hamilton, is thoroughly enjoyable but, despite its subtitle, it is less a personal biography than a review of this career, with an emphasis on how his work influenced future filmmakers and the horror genre. Karloff fans and serious film history buffs will find little that was not already known about the man but it is a wonderful introduction and retrospective on Boris Karloff.

The Golden Globes love Caitriona Balfe. She has contended as Best TV Drama Actress for each of the first four seasons of “Outlander.” Indeed, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which hands out the Globes annually, just cannot quit the Irish actress.
Last year, Balfe was missing in action at the Globes because “Outlander” only aired four episodes within the 2019 eligibility window. This year, Balfe is back in contention and she might have her strongest chance yet to finally take home some hardware after losing her prior four Golden Globe contests to Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) in 2016, Claire Foy (“The Crown”) in 2017, Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) in 2018 and Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) in 2019.

By now, there have been enough movies and TV dramas focused on the fraying ties between individuals gradually diminished by Alzheimer’s disease and their supportive but increasingly stressed loved ones to constitute an entire subgenre. If “The Artist’s Wife” stands apart from the pack, it’s largely because this familiar but affecting drama spends less time on depicting the systematic lessening of an exceptional intellect — though, rest assured, that tragedy is not at all minimized — and focuses more on the psychic toll taken on a loyal life partner whose selflessness is running on empty.
Right from the start, director Tom Dolby, working in concert with co-writers Nicole Brending and Abdi Nazemian, makes it clear that Claire (Lena Olin), the younger but no longer young wife of aged celebrity artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern), long ago settled into subservience in the spacious confines of their well-appointed East Hamptons home.

Strand Releasing and Water’s End Productions has decided to postpone the domestic release of The Artist’s Wife in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tom Dolby-directed drama starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern was set to debut on April 3 in New York, April 10 in Los Angeles and April 17 in San Francisco. The film will be released later this year.
“With our particular audience as well as the general public’s safety in mind, we have decided to delay the release of The Artist’s Wife,” said Dolby. “This film is about love and hope bringing people together in the face of adversity, and it’s important to us that as much of our audience as possible is able to see it in a group setting. For decades, Bruce Dern has been one of the industry’s most compelling and often underrated actors. In recent years, Dern has only occasionally gotten central roles to play, more often being given supporting parts. This April, however, he gets a plum role in The Artist’s Wife, an independent drama which he stars in. Truly, for fans of great acting, this is a treat. A Trailer has dropped for the flick, which you will be able to see at the end of this post. If you love Dern, in particular, you’re in for something special here. The movie is a drama that will almost certainly tug at the heartstrings. IMDb describes the film as such: “Claire Smythson, wife of the renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson, is plunged into a late-life crisis when her husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show.

"Are you painting again...? You were always such a sensitive artist." Strand Releasing has unveiled the official trailer for an indie drama titled The Artist's Wife, which first premiered last year at the Hamptons & Mill Valley Film Festivals. Lena Olin stars as Claire Smythson, wife of renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson, who is plunged into a late-life crisis when her passionate painter husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show. Challenged by the loss of her world as she knew it, Claire must now decide whether to stand with Richard on the sidelines or step into the spotlight herself. Also starring Bruce Dern as her husband Richard, plus Juliet Rylance, Avan Jogia, Stefanie Powers, Catherine Curtin, and Tonya Pinkins. It looks like a compelling film, with a sensitive side to it. Twilight Time goes for a Blu-ray upgrade of the western remake with the all-star cast. Forget that there was ever a John Ford or a John Wayne and it’s a perfectly presentable wild west story, but the mileage may vary for classic western fans inclined to make comparisons to the 1939 classic. Top billing goes to an enthusiastic Ann-Margret… but we’re sorry to report that her hip-swinging rock number, ‘Viva Geronimo!’ was cut at the last minute.

Technology is never to be trusted; as evolved as it has become, the thought of sentience and ill will striking back at our computer dependent life will never go away – and kids, just because you use Incognito, nothing is ever really gone. (Trust me.) Enter Paper Man (1971), an early entry into the A.I. Paranoia Sweepstakes that is pretty prescient and a damn entertaining thriller to boot.
Originally broadcast as part of The New CBS Friday Night Movies, Paper Man fought it out against ABC’s lineup of Room 222/The Odd Couple/Love, American Style and NBC’s World Premiere Movie, surely losing to the former’s solid roster. The world was just not ready for computer hijinks if it didn’t involve Stanley Kubrick or Kurt Russell.

Sunday night’s launch of the latest season of “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” on ITV has become the U.K.’s most-watched show in 2018, eclipsing recent BBC smash hit “Bodyguard” and everything else on British TV aside from live coverage of the World Cup soccer tournament.
The series debuted in the U.K. in 2002, and while the likes of other reality-tv staples such as “Big Brother” have run out of steam, “I’m a Celebrity…” still appears to be firing on all cylinders. The launch of Season 18 averaged 11 million viewers in a tough Sunday 9 p.m. slot against “The Little Drummer Girl” on the BBC and had a peak viewership of 11.9 million, or a 51% share. The knockout numbers marked a five-year high for an opening episode of the show.

Chicago – My year in capturing 2017 celebrity portraits is best summed up with a bit of poetry: My subjects skewed older and politically bolder/In a year that demanded change/My list is longer with work hopefully stronger/In capturing these faces not strange.
As per every year the ranking of these portraits are based on a combination of the star power wattage of the subjects, the artistic results and the difficulty of landing the quarry for those budding smart-phone celebrity stalkers who may wish to play along at home. So without further adieu, I present my (Joe Arce’s) Top 25 Celebrity Portraits of 2017.

Chicago – For years, her signature TV series – and subsequent TV movie run – was the iconic “Hart to Hart,” co-starring Robert Wagner. Stefanie Powers began her career in the Swingin’ 1960s, and her career includes one of the signature TV shows from that era. HollywoodChicago.com wishes Stefanie Powers a Happy Birthday on November 2nd, 2017, with this Exclusive Portrait from photographer Joe Arce at “The Hollywood Show” from the Chicago gathering in March of this year.

Starting out in 1939 as the little studio that could, Hammer would finally make their reputation in the late fifties reimagining Universal’s black and white horrors as eye-popping Technicolor gothics – their pictorial beauty, thanks to cameramen like Jack Asher and Arthur Ibbetson, was fundamental to the studio’s legacy. So it’s been more than a little frustrating to see such disrespect visited upon these films by home video companies happy to smother the market with grainy prints, incoherent cropping and under-saturated colors. The House of Hammer and the film community in general deserve far better than that.
Thanks to Indicator, the home video arm of Powerhouse films based in the UK, those wrongs are beginning to be righted, starting with their impressive new release of Hammer shockers, Fear Warning! Even better news for stateside fans; the set is region-free, ready to be relished the world over.

Blake Edwards: Director of the 'Pink Panther' movies – and Julie Andrews' husband for more than four decades – was at his best handling polished comedies and a couple of dead serious dramas. Blake Edwards movies: Best known for slapstick fare, but at his best handling polished comedies and dramas The Pink Panther and its sequels[1] are the movies most closely associated with screenwriter-director-producer Blake Edwards, whose film and television career spanned more than half a century.[2] But unless you're a fan of Keystone Kops-style slapstick, they're the filmmaker's least interesting efforts. In fact, Edwards (born William Blake Crump in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 26, 1922) was at his best (co-)writing and/or directing polished comedies (e.g., Operation Petticoat, Victor Victoria) and, less frequently, dramas (Days of Wine and Roses, the romantic comedy-drama Breakfast at Tiffany's). The article below and follow-up posts offer a brief look at some of Blake Edwards' non-Pink Panther comedies,...

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

The Harts are going gay. Deadline reports that NBC is currently developing a gay remake of the early '80s ABC show Hart to Hart, which starred Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as jet-setting sleuths. In their stead would be Jonathan Hart and Dan Hartman, a crime-solving power couple with Hart as the straitlaced attorney, and Hartman as the freewheeling investigator. Opposites attract — even for gay people! Carol Mendelsohn, best known for producing the CSI franchise, is working on the show, alongside scriptwriter Christopher Fife (Revenge and Private Practice). The project is currently just in development, though, which means it's still a long way from getting a pilot — and, more specifically, becoming a full-fledged show on network television. However, if it surmounts all of those hurdles, NBC's Hart to Hart would be the first gay remake of a classic on a major network. As demographic shifts continue, it makes sense...

As a die-hard fan of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV series, I admit to having expectations of experiencing mixed emotions at last Monday's world premiere of Guy Ritchie's feature film version of the show at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York. For those of us who grew up during the spy craze of the mid-1960s, espionage movies are always close to our hearts. With Bond, Bourne and Mission: Impossible still big box-office, it's clear that the younger generation is in synch with our passion for this genre. The Bond films have earned respect for enduring for more than 50 years with six different actors giving vastly different interpretations of Agent 007, each successful in his own way. However,...

I Need a Lover with a Farm Hand: Dolan’s Latest a Filet of Self Loathing
For his fourth feature, Xavier Dolan adapts the material of another for the first time with Michel Marc Bouchard’s play, Tom at the Farm, a rural set psychological thriller that’s been described as queer noir, but perhaps homoneurotic would be a better descriptor. A foreboding set-up leads to an uncomfortable exploration of self-loathing that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, as the material, which exemplifies a vicious and virulent homophobia still very much alive today, somehow still feels like a period piece character study.
We quickly gather that Tom (Dolan) has recently lost his lover Guillaume in a mysterious accident as he scrawls desperate notes to himself on a napkin, trying to rationalize and contain the raging heartbreak he’s experiencing all by himself. He travels to visit Guillaume’s estranged mother...

Chicago – There is not quite any entertainment like a great John Wayne picture, and “McLintock!” certainly fulfills that expectation. But in adapting Shakepeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” they forgot that the womenfolk had progressed a bit since the spankings that were liberally doled out against the wives and daughters.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Produced in 1963, this is an old fashioned comedy western, with old fashioned John Wayne values. The Duke gives screen time to the plight of the Indians, but obviously can’t tolerate Eastern educational elites, certain politicians and women outside there roles as housekeepers. Wayne portrays a wealthy cattle driving man, and he works for “the people who buy the T-bone steak.” That rugged individualism sums up “McLintock!.” but along the way there is some true fun, and a nice vehicle for some Silver Era character actors, including the great Jerry Van Dyke.

“Applause” or “Roar”? Edward or Jacob? Whigs or Tories? History has long provided us with pop culture battles rife for debate, but there are some questions that have never even been posed to the general public. Until today.
In honor of the 10-year anniversary of the series finale of Friends, I’d like to propose a question that has been on my mind for roughly that same amount of time. It has to do with the November 2003 episode “The One with Ross’s Grant,” in which Monica and Rachel argue over a horrifying piece of art created by Phoebe.

The Warner Archive Collection is really starting to put out some great DVDs that feature titles you aren’t going to find anywhere else, and the latest to be made available is Search. A massively fun show from the early 70s, Search starred Hugh O’Brian, Doug McClure, and Tony Franciosa, and was (although I’m testing my memory) a show that pulled great tech ideas into the espionage drama realm, at a point when some of the ideas were practically sci-fi.
The complete series is available now, and it’s a lost classic that deserves a look. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get a taste of it to know if you’re interested in buying, but for those who remember the series, this is a real treat.

One thing Adam Scott is making sure we're all completely aware of: Opening credits sequences from the 1980s are pretty awesome. For the third installment of his Adult Swim project, The Greatest Event in Television History, he and a few pals took on the grandiose challenge of faithfully re-creating the opening credits sequence of the 1980 to 1986 Ted Knight sitcom Too Close for Comfort. Scott's previous stabs at mock-perfect apery included the 1981 to 1989 detective series Simon & Simon, with Jon Hamm and Scott inhabiting the roles of the titular brothers, and Hart to Hart, in which he and Amy Poehler (with Horatio Sanz!) sent up the gooey 1979 to 1984 Robert Wagner–Stefanie Powers mystery/romcom mash-up. At the height of his career, he dropped out of show business to do construction work because he disdained living the life of a celebrity. He was also a championship skier at one time. At his peak, Harrison's well-received folk songs won him loyal followers and some of the songs charted as hits. His biggest splash came when he recorded "The Windmills of Your Mind", the classic title song for the 1968 film "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring Steve McQueen. The song won an Oscar and is still "covered" by artists today. In terms of acting, Harrison only dabbled in the field. He...
