Actors’ Equity will hand out leaflets outside a workshop of the Broadway-bound Smash musical this week, “warning of the possibility of a strike” in light of ongoing negotiations with the Broadway League regarding compensation for work on shows in development.
Equity President Kate Shindle is expected to be in attendance when the union leaflets the Smash developmental workshop Thursday morning and Friday afternoon outside the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.
Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”
While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. Reunited with lyricist David Zippel, the Disney Legend created a number of all-new songs to compliment a book by Kristoffer Diaz and Robert Horn for the latest musical from the House of Mouse.
A few years later in 2019, the production made its world premiere at the Delacorte Theater in New York City's Central Park with a stellar cast that featured Jelani Alladin, who originated the role of Kristoff on stage in "Frozen," as Hercules, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart of "Aladdin" on Broadway as Phil, star of NBC's "Smash" Krysta Rodriguez as Meg, and, instead of revisiting the character that he...

The wig gives it away, otherwise we’d be hard-pressed to immediately – or even slowly – recognize Paul Bettany’s fast-talking, extroverted and inquisitive artist character in Anthony McCarten’s The Collaboration as that historic icon of cryptic, mumbled monosyllables Andy Warhol.
Unfortunately, Bettany isn’t the only thing that feels smudged in this ’80s-set paint-by-numbers and highly fictionalized dual bio-play about Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, opening tonight in a Manhattan Theatre Club production at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway.
Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and inspired by the real life 1984 painting collaboration of the aging (at least in terms of artistic relevance) Warhol and the soaring Basquiat – a project presented so much more convincingly and movingly in the 1996 film Basquiat, starring Jeffrey Wright and, in the definitive performance of Warhol, David Bowie, who haunts this play like a shadow – The Collaboration is an oddly lifeless endeavor, a failure in...

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 48 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12; last year, only 41 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

The stage musical adaptation of NBC’s Smash is “alive and kicking,” says producer Neil Meron, and he and composer Marc Shaiman have the photos to prove it.
Both Meron and Shaiman posted photos – and, in Shaiman’s case, some Broadway-belting-style audio clips – of an all-star reading of the work in progress, with Meron writing, “Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series—amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus.”

Lauren Lapkus (Crashing) and Krysta Rodriguez (Just One Kiss) have landed lead roles in the upcoming CBS multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion. According to Variety, Rodriguez will play Eliza, a fun-loving and quick-witted alcoholic who runs a bookstore/bar in New Orleans with her uncle. After getting in trouble with the law one too many times, Eliza is assigned a court-appointed “sober companion” who will force her to confront her demons, get her life together, and stay sober. Lapkus will play Eliza’s sober companion, Shelley, a joyful, high-spirited oddball. While her non-stop enthusiasm and unconventional methods aren’t to everybody’s taste, she’s the best at what she does — even if she drives Eliza crazy in the process. Jennie Snyder Urman co-wrote the story with them and is exec producing under her Sutton Street Productions banner alongside Joanna Klein.

Lauren Lapkus and Krysta Rodriguez are set for the lead roles in the CBS multi-cam comedy pilot “Sober Companion,” Variety has learned.
Rodriguez will play Eliza, described as a fun-loving, quick-witted alcoholic who runs a bookstore/bar with her uncle in New Orleans. After one too many run-ins with the law, she is assigned a court-appointed Sober Companion who will force her to confront her demons, get her act together, and stay sober, all while driving her completely nuts.
Lapkus will play Shelley, Eliza’s Sober Companion. She is a joyful, high-spirited oddball. Her methods are a bit unconventional, and her relentless enthusiasm isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but she’s the best at what she does.
Lapkus has previously appeared in TV shows like “Orange Is the New Black,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Good Girls,” “Crashing,” and “Lucifer.” She is also set as a co-lead opposite Nicole Byers in...

Krysta Rodriguez (Halston) and Lauren Lapkus (Good Girls) have been tapped as the leads in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion, from Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS Studios, where Urman is under an overall deal.
Written by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal from a story they co-wrote with Urman, Sober Companion revolves around Eliza (Rodriguez), a hot-mess alcoholic who owns a bookstore/bar with her uncle in New Orleans and who is forced to get her life together when the court appoints her an exhaustingly upbeat sober companion, Shelley (Lapkus), with whom she has to live 24/7.
The comedy was originally set up at Fox during the 2013-2014 cycle where it went to a single-camera pilot with Justin Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. The project, which was written by Urman and Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot...

“That’s why it’s a real New York story. Skeptic from the start,” Krysta Rodriguez says of her new Hallmark Channel romantic comedy. In Just One Kiss (premiering April 2), Rodriguez plays Mia, a college literature professor who is a single mom going through a divorce when she meets bachelor Tony (Santino Fontana), a popular headliner in a Manhattan supper club. She read the script, and “I just was smiling the whole time. I really enjoyed myself,” Rodriguez tells TV Insider. “I thought that this woman that they had created had real stakes. It didn’t feel forced, and I really liked that she was living a life that was sort of in flux and she had to kind of find her way through that life.” Furthermore, with two Broadway stars as the leads, it’s no surprise that there’s singing for both of them — but that wasn’t originally the plan.

A flock of drag queens dressed like the Spice Girls stand together on a stage, awaiting final judgement on their performance in an annual competition to win a coveted crown. A villainous blonde in a beehive wig sneers at them. A proud trollop in a neon pink micro skirt wonders aloud if she should take her top off. A shirtless hunk watches from the wings. Finally, the bejeweled diadem lands on the head of a surprise winner and everyone applauds.
“Cut!” calls the director.
Anyone familiar with “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will be forgiven for thinking this is a scene from the upcoming season of the perennially Emmy-winning reality competition show. As of this writing, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts can’t decide who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2021 Emmys. A leading 17 of these pundits predict Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) will prevail on Sunday night, with 13 more picking Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and one going out on a limb for Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”). But I think they’re all wrong. Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) is my pick to win for playing famed American fashion designer Halston in Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix limited series. Even though the Scottish actor is a bit of an underdog at the Emmys, don’t count him out just yet. Read on to see my four reasons why I think McGregor will beat the odds.

In 1985, after thousands of gay men had died of AIDS in the U.S., Tammy Faye Bakker interviewed an openly gay pastor with HIV/AIDS named Steve Pieters on a national Christian television program.
“How sad that we as Christians, who are supposed to love everyone, are so afraid of an AIDS patient that we will not put our arm around them and tell them that we care,” Tammy, through teary eyes and smudged makeup, said then on The Ptl Club, the televangelist network she founded with husband Jim Bakker and which spectacularly collapsed after he was convicted of mass fraud and conspiracy.
In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” a new biographical film starring Jessica Chastain as Tammy and Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker that interview with Pieters is recreated verbatim as the centerpiece of the film to highlight Bakker’s complicated character of Christian evangelism, uncommon empathy, and accidental gay iconography.

The limited series “Halston” premiered on May 14 of this year, but the period drama about the fashion icon of the same name was more than two decades in the making. Series director Daniel Minahan first read a biography of the famed designer in 1996 and felt that it needed a film treatment. After multiple failed attempts to bring the project to fruition, he teamed with Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon and superstar producer Ryan Murphy and the series found a home on Netflix.
“Halston” stars Ewan McGregor in the title role. The Iowa- born Halston first came to prominence designing high-end hats for women. After one of his hats is worn by Jackie Kennedy, Halston becomes a giant in the fashion industry, creating everything from designer gowns, to luggage and even perfume. The series is set against the backdrop of the New York party scene of the 1970s, replete with cocaine-fueled...

It took some 20 years for Dan Minahan to bring the influential but ultimately tragic life of fashion designer Roy Halston to the small screen. The executive producer/director of Netflix’s five-part series “Halston,” Minahan initially thought he would do a feature film version of the designer who came to fame in 1961 designing the pillbox Jackie Kennedy wore for the inauguration and then transformed fashion and Bff Liza Minnelli when he created the evocative, colorful costumes for her 1972 special “Liza With A Z.” But he developed a cocaine habit and spent his nights at Studio 54; his world collapsed in the 1980s.
During a Deadline Zoom conversation, Minahan soon realized Halston’s story didn’t fit into a 90-minute script. “I think the world had to kind of catch up on this story,” he noted. “When we decided that would make it a five-hour limited series, it gave us the time...

The role of the best friend can be a thankless and colorless one, but not if the best friend is Liza Minnelli. That’s the part that theater and TV actress Krysta Rodriguez plays in the Netflix limited series “Halston,” which stars Ewan McGregor as the iconic fashion designer and features Rodriguez as the diva who became his lifelong friend and confidante through success, drug addiction and rehab, up to his death in 1990 from AIDS-related cancer.

Krysta Rodriguez is best known for her roles on the Broadway stage including originating the role of Wednesday Addams in the Tony-nominated musical The Addams Family, as well as First Date the Musical opposite Zachary Levi. She also starred in the groundbreaking 2015 Tony-nominated Deaf West Theatre production of Spring Awakening. On top of all that, she starred in NBC’s Broadway series Smash and led the Netflix zombie dark comedy Daybreak.
With Netflix’s Halston, Rodriguez takes on the role of the legend herself Liza Minnelli, who was the titular fashion designer’s best friend. This is a progressive decision considering Rodriguez is of Latinx descent; it is expected that Minnelli would be played by a white actress.
In Halston, Rodgriguez lights up the screen as she goes on this series that spotlights Halston, his impact on the fashion world and in culture. More than that, we get to see...

Halston himself (Ewan McGregor) was a well known Studio 54 attendee in real life, partying there as often as he could, and the show reflects that — he, Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez), Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) and Joe Eula (David Pittu) go there all the time,...
