It was near the end of his one-on-one interview with Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman that Real Time host Bill Maher asked the question that people have been requesting for weeks – “What’s the deal with the wardrobe?”
Fetterman, who was instrumental in getting a stuffy Senate to relax its dress code, came to Maher’s show adorned in his trademark hoodie and shorts. He also brought a receipt on a previous Maher joke about how Fetterman dresses like a guy whom the airlines lost his luggage.
“I’m not making a statement,” Fetterman calmly related. “I am into comfort, and I don’t have to iron, and it’s hard to find suits,” the latter quip a reference to his 6-foot, eight-inch frame. “I never understood why anyone thought that was interesting.” Denying his role in changing the dress code, he noted, “More people seemed concerned about me wearing a...

More than three months after Vice Media Group CEO Bruce Dixon announced plans to layoff hundreds of employees and the shuttering of its flagship website, co-founder Shane Smith is set to return as editor-in-chief of Vice News and to host a podcast with Bill Maher this summer.
Smith, who co-founded Vice (which at the time was called Voice of Montreal) in 1994, stepped down as CEO in 2018 as the digital publication floundered behind the scenes. When discussing his decision to come back, he told the Wall Street Journal: “It’s your baby that you built,...

Co-founder Shane Smith is taking on a new role at Vice. The Wall St. Journal reports that he has been appointed editor-in-chief of Vice News.
“It’s your baby that you built, that you birthed,” Smith said to the WSJ of his new tasks, which come in the wake of several years of rocky financial times at the company.
Smith will reportedly host several shows, starting with Vice News: The Truth? a video podcast that will feature talk-show host Bill Maher as a recurring guest. Smith said the show will report facts free of political bias and expose misinformation, and will air on Maher’s podcast network and Vice TV.
The WSJ says Smith will also create content on the company’s social-media channels.
Vice exited the day-to-day news business earlier this year and is focused on long-form documentaries.
Smith blamed social media platforms for siphoning off Vice’s ad revenue.

During the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver joined the list of Hollywood notables who have reacted to Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his New York hush money trial.
On Thursday, a jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records after weeks of testimony from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star. It was also a historic day, as Trump also became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes.
“A New York businessman got into some legal trouble, which was undeniably fun to watch unfold live,” Oliver said at the beginning of the show.
The comedian proceeded to play a clip from NBC News’ live coverage of the verdict reading, where senior legal correspondent Laura Jarrett verbally read “guilty” for each individual count.

Bill Maher had quite a lot to say on his latest episode of Real Time about Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his criminal hush money trial.
On Thursday, a New York jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. Throughout the five weeks of testimony, the jury heard from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star. Sentencing for Trump is set for July 11.
Maher described Friday’s episode as a “historic show,” seemingly because Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes.
“Yeah, he’s pretty distraught and pissed off these days,” the host said. “But I gotta say, Don, if there was a silver line to this, you finally did something that made Stormy [Daniels] come.” (The case centered on a sexual encounter that Daniels said she had with Trump in 2006 that...

John Waters is still stirring things up at 78. A frequent Real Time guest of Bill Maher, the writer, actor, and filmmaker of such cult classics as Pink Flamingos and Cry-Baby can still zing with the best.
He started off with a brief discussion of this week’s biggest news, the Trump trial results in New York.
“If he gets home detention, you will hear Melania scream,” Waters said. Adding, “In jail, they pay guards for cell phones. He has to sneak in “Just for Men.”
The conversation took an abrupt turn when Maher brought up the Pope’s slur against gays this week, which prompted Waters to reminisce about the days of Glory Holes on both coasts. “God, I hope I didn’t blow Rex Reed!”
Fortunately for Walters, he claimed his films are “doing better than ever,” though he admits he lost every obscenity case he was ever involved in.

Buoyed by a two-year deal at HBO, a weekly CNN presence and a new book, Bill Maher now has decided to describe himself as a “centrist.” Is it a claim in vain?
Having watched his show for years and done several shows with him, I suspect he’s instinctively too “incorrect” to qualify for “moderation.” Strategically, some feel he shouldn’t even try.
The audience for stand-ups and for TV in general is changing noticeably, to some performers’ discomfort. At their annual upfronts, TV executives two weeks ago no longer were obsessed by that premium 18-49 age group, acknowledging that their remaining audience is becoming geriatric – 66 for the ABC network, for example, and 69 for Fox News.
Stand-up comics report their crowds at arenas or clubs are aging as well, and they are adjusting their routines accordingly. Even the jokes seem less coital, more socially consensual.

In a new Joe Biden campaign advertisement, Robert De Niro declared that former president Donald Trump “snapped” after he lost the 2020 presidential election.
“From midnight tweets to drinking bleach to tear-gassing citizens and staging a photo-op,” De Niro recounted at the beginning of the advertisement. “We knew Trump was out of control when he was president, and then he lost the 2020 election and snapped.”
“Desperately trying to hold on to power,” he said while clips of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack were shown in the ad. “Now he’s running again, this time threatening to be a dictator, to terminate the Constitution.”
De Niro’s “dictator” comment was in reference to his telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity during a town hall interview in December that he would only be a dictator on the first day of his presidency.
The campaign ad then showed a video of the former president saying at a rally in Dayton,...

Addressing critics who say he’s become cranky, he assured them, I haven’t changed… it’s that your ideas are stupid. Travis Kelce is giving his thoughts on Harrison Butker’s controversial graduation speech.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end addressed the criticism the Chiefs kicker has received for his speech in which he made remarks directed towards women, suggesting they should embrace being a “homemaker.” He also condemned abortion, euthanasia, IVF, surrogacy and the LGBTQ community.
On a new episode of his New Heights podcast, Kelce first described Butker as a “great person” and “great teammate.” He added, “He’s treated friends and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone.”
However, Kelce reiterated that “when it comes down to his views and what he said at the Benedictine College commencement speech, those are his.”
“I can’t say I agree with the majority of it or just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids.

The first reviews for Donald Trump movie The Apprentice are in, following its world premiere at Cannes.
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film follows Sebastian Stan’s Trump during his rise to power in 1980s America, as he’s mentored by firebrand right-wing attorney Roy Cohn, played by Succession star Jeremy Strong.
The cast also includes Borat Subsequent Moviefilm star Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donavan as the former president’s father Fred Trump Sr.
The movie, which currently doesn’t have a U.S. distributor, holds a 69 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Tuesday.
Though the Trump campaign has threatened to sue over the film, Abbasi offered to screen the movie for the former president and talk about it with him, saying, “I don’t necessarily think that this is a movie he would dislike.”

He also made some remarks directed towards women in the crowd, suggesting they should embrace being a “homemaker.”

Forget the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. Bill Maher spent the first segment of Friday’s Real Time asking about a cultural battle – the feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
To explain the war of words, Maher brought in Michael Eric Dyson, a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of the book Unequal: A Story of America.
Dyson blamed the feud on a personality clash. “Kendrick Lamar didn’t like the fact that Drake was who he was,” a resentment dating back years. It kept brewing until it “blew up in one particular song,” which was Like That, a 2024 collaboration by Future, Metro Boomin, and Lamar.
Dyson said verbal battles are not unusual in the Black community. He pointed out that Drake, a Canadian, has been accused of being a “culture vulture” who is not socially conscious. “So his Blackness was put into question,” Dyson said.

“I mean, don’t get me started on that,” Maher said. “Isn’t it time everyone just went: ‘Ok, It wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough! I mean for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world. People have done so much worse things and gotten less. There’s no rhyme or reason to the #MeToo-type punishments.”
Burr added, “They took $50 million, I think they punished him.”

Bill Burr joined Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast and declared cancel culture is over, while Maher once again doubled down in disbelief about how Louis C.K. remains on the outs in Hollywood. C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017 and admitted to masturbating in front of several female comics a few weeks later. While C.K. has continued to tour and direct his own projects, he largely operates outside of the Hollywood studio system.
“I mean, don’t get me started on that,” Maher told Burr when C.K. was brought up. “Isn’t it time everyone just went: ‘Ok, It wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough! Eric Schlosser knows food. Not in the way Bobby Flay or Giada De Laurentiis does, but in a scholarly manner that knows its affects on the health of anyone who eats.
The author of the classic study Fast Food Nation and an EP on several films, Schlosser came to Bill Maher’s Friday Real Time as a harbinger of potential doom to come, a guest with the credentials to back up his scary predictions with authority.
The next pandemic, Schlosser said, is potentially germinating down in Texas. That’s where it was recently discovered that bird flu had migrated into the cows at mega-dairies, and the federal government has not been allowed in to test the livestock or its workers.
“It’s a perfect example of how the public health is being threatened by private interests,” he said, noting, “The food industry spends more money lobbying than the defense industry.

Bill Maher may be done with stand-up comedy. The comedian said this week he believes his upcoming HBO special will be his last.
Maher revealed the news during a conversation with fellow comic Jerry Seinfeld on his Club Random podcast. Maher told his friend he felt “nervous” to tell him, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [stand-up],” he said.
Seinfeld appeared shocked by the news, to which Maher said, “I don’t want to make a big announcement or something,” but noted that his upcoming special for HBO — scheduled for later this year — will be his 13th.
“That’s a lot,” Seinfeld said.
Maher agreed, and added, “I put a lot of time and effort into it. As you know, stand-up is like playing the cello. You can’t just walk up there. You have to stay in practice. And I do, I’ve always loved it.

Bill Maher says he’s ready to put down the mic—at least when it comes to standup
Sitting down with Jerry Seinfeld on the latest episode of Maher’s Club Random podcast, the long-time host of HBO’s Real Time revealed that he’s planning to wind down his standup career.
“I feel nervous about telling you. I feel like you’re the confessor to this,” Maher told Seinfeld, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [standup].”
Maher was quick to give himself an out. “I could go back. I don’t want to make, like, a big announcement or something,” he cautioned. “I mean, I’m doing a special at the end of the year. It’ll be my 13th for HBO. That’s a lot.”
Seinfeld seemed surprised by the news, but would ultimately tell Maher the idea was “not crazy” after hearing the full reasoning.

Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and front man for the Who Roger Daltrey has a solo North American tour on June 10. So he stopped by Bill Maher’s Real Time on Friday to do some reminiscing on his long career and what comes next.
After thanking Daltrey “for all the entertainment over the years,” Maher got right to the point: “I don’t remember seeing you with a shirt,” he said, offering a brief montage of Daltrey in his prime, sans shirt.
“A little bit too much information,” Daltrey said, and then admitted, “I get incredibly hot when I sing. It’s like a furnace.” Still, he allowed, at 80 years old, he’s more likely to keep the shirt on this time around.

House Republicans are calling for NPR CEO Katherine Maher to appear at a hearing on May 8 following a now former staffer’s allegations of bias in news coverage.
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-wa), chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, joined with two other House Republicans in a letter to Maher. “The Committee has concerns about the direction in which NPR may be headed under past and present leadership,” they wrote. “As a taxpayer funded, public radio organization, NPR should focus on fair and objective news reporting that both considers and reflects the views of the larger U.S. population and not just a niche audience.” The hearing would be before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

Jimmy Failla isn’t taking over Fox News Chanel, but he has, at least for one short period in the late afternoon, seized control of a portion of its New York ground-floor facilities.
The space is typically devoted to a space for guests to hang out and a section for hair and makeup, but Failla uses it to get himself revved up to tape “Fox News Saturday Night,” a program the network says is devoted less to red-versus-blue rants and more to making people laugh. The hallway leading to his studio was flooded with the sounds of rockabilly and Queen.
“True comedy doesn’t have a political party. Comedy is a party,’ says the 47-year-old comedian, who hails from a family of cops and, prior to his tenure at Fox News was supplementing his stand-up income by driving a New York taxi. “And at a party, you don’t ask...

Here we go again. Apparently not content with his ongoing feud with Jimmy Kimmel, Donald Trump added two more Late Nighters to his enemies list this weekend.
Trump took to Truth Social with his take on the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, which featured an interview with third-party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. While the post was mostly aimed at Rfk Jr., Trump made sure to get a couple barbs in at Maher first.
“I actually watched, first time in a long time, ratings challenged Bill Maher’s really boring interview with Rfk Jr. last night,” Trump wrote in a Sunday morning post.
Despite Trump’s claims to the contrary, in fact Maher’s program recently doubled its audience when CNN began rebroadcasting the Friday night HBO show Saturday nights in prime time.

When did Columbia become Kanye State? Bill Maher asked that question at the top of Friday’s Real Time on HBO, setting the tone for a show that focused on the national campus unrest and what’s behind it.
Maher attempted to answer that himself in his “New Rules” editorial, saying in a message to protesters blocking traffic in the name of a cause: “No one likes you.”
He contended that protesters fail to realize that they are not bringing people around to their point of view by making them late for work or from picking up a child from day care.
“You can glue your hands to the street, since your hands don’t have to do any work today,” Maher said, and claimed that for many social justice warriors, “It’s more about the warrioring than the causes.”

When it comes to polarizing guests, Real Time With Bill Maher is set to hit the jackpot this week.
Late Wednesday, HBO announced that independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr will be Maher’s lead guest Friday, alongside former CNN anchor Don Lemon.
Kennedy has long been seen as a potential spoiler in the November election. Recent polls have him capturing anywhere from 2-16% of the electorate, although whether he draws more support away from Trump or Biden is matter of some debate.
An ex-democrat whose father was slain while running for president himself in 1968, Kennedy is arguably best known for his controversial embrace of a number of conspiracy theories.
Several of Kennedy’s own siblings have publicly denounced his run for the presidency, saying last fall “Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same vision, values or judgment.”

Update: After “Homeland’s” David Harewood told The Guardian that actors should be able to “Black up” for roles, but warned “it’d better be fucking good,” the actor clarified in a statement to Variety, “I don’t support or condone Blackface. My own documentary on the subject can be found on the BBC website. It is a grotesque distortion of race and should always be condemned.”
Previously: Speaking to The Guardian, Harewood, who also serves as president of prestigious British drama school the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, said: “We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting.”
He added, “Yes, we’ve got to be representative, but I do think we have to be careful.

On this week’s “Real Time” on HBO, Bill Maher addressed the recent “Quiet on Set” documentary, which explored exploitation of children in Nickelodeon programming. Maher then used that to launch into a wider discussion expressing skepticism of modern progressive gender politics, including how much kids are exposed to nontraditional gender identities.

An exasperated Bill Maher, notorious for not having his own children, asked on Friday’s ‘Real Time’ why he is the one who is always left trying to defend them.
In his “New Rules” editorial, Maher trained his guns on the shocking Max documentary Quiet on Set, which detailed what the past young stars went through on the Nick sets. “Omg,” was Maher’s opening salvo.
Maher said that the Nickelodeon depicted “wasn’t a studio – it was Neverland Ranch with craft services.” He said the documentary was “scene after scene of the child stars of their day being exposed to…degradation.” He added, “I was grossed out and I’ve gone camping with John Waters.”
The documentary is the talk of the town in Los Angeles, Maher said, but pointed out that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was derided when he was saying the same things about Disney’s actions.

The conversation had turned to that specter of “cancel culture,” and Couric mentioned an article about the challenges of separating the art from the artist with regard to Allen and his new movie, Coup de Chance (a French film...
