Michael Boyd, who revived the fortunes of the Royal Shakespeare Company as its artistic director, died today of cancer, his family announced. He was 68.
Boyd replaced RSC predecessor Adrian Noble in 2003, departing nine years later. In 2012, he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honors for services to drama. Many felt that he was being rewarded for keeping the RSC intact.
Noble came under attack from all quarters for shifting the company from its London base and for revealing plans to have the RSC theater in Stratford-upon-Avon demolished.
During his tenure, however, Boyd led the organization’s successful transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford, a $179.3 million project that won a 2011 Royal Institute of British Architects award and was shortlisted for the Riba Stirling Prize.
But it was in a rehearsal room with actors where Boyd made his mark.

Adele has delighted fans by paying homage to a famous painting in the music video for her latest single.
On Wednesday (26 October), the singer released the video for her latest single “I Drink Wine”.
In it, Adele is shown floating down a river in an inflatable with a glass of wine in her hand, gliding past construction workers and men fishing while surrounded by synchronised swimmers.
Towards the end of the song, the camera pulls back, showing that the entire scene has taken place in a studio lot, with the sunset background really an animated screen.
In the last scene, she lies in the water surrounded by peonies in a gold sequin dress.
On Twitter, Adele thanked director Joe Talbot, writing: “Thank you Joe Talbot for creating a world for it and for putting the most incredible bunch of creatives together, you’re so talented and I’m honoured to have worked with you all!

Before the academy expanded the Best Picture race in 2010, the winner of that award almost always picked up the Best Director prize as well. But since then, these two awards have aligned at only seven of the dozen ceremonies. We thought that we’d see another case of double-dipping this year with Jane Campion winning for both directing and producing “The Power of the Dog.” But now it looks like “Coda” will claim the top prize of Best Picture, with Campion consoling herself with being the third woman to win Best Director.
Why the change?
When the decision was made to increase the number of nominees for Best Picture, it was also decided to bring back the preferential ballot that had been used by the academy until the mid 1940s. The rationale was that by ranking the nominees, the winner would be the film that had the broadest level of support.

Thirty-two years ago, 29-year-old “Henry V” (1989) director, writer and star Kenneth Branagh became the second youngest person to receive Best Director and Best Actor Oscar nominations for the same film after Orson Welles. Over the next 22 years, he picked up bids in three more categories: Best Live Action Short, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. Now, his Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay notices for the 2021 film “Belfast” have made him the first person ever recognized in seven unique categories. He is also included in this year’s Best Director lineup, making that the only award for which he has competed twice.

Filmmaker Kenneth Branagh is back in the awards race with his new drama “Belfast,” and the film is drawing further interest based on its six Oscar nominations — including Best Picture. Based partly on Branagh’s experience as a child growing up in Northern Ireland, “Belfast” has been drawing critical raves since it hit the festival circuit last fall and earned the coveted Peoples’ Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
But you may be wondering where is “Belfast” available? Is it getting a streaming release? All your burning questions are answered below.

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”), Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”), and Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”). Our odds currently show that Campion (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Branagh (4/1), Spielberg (9/2), Anderson (9/2), and Hamaguchi (9/2).
All but Hamaguchi are previous directing nominees. Spielberg has already collected a pair of trophies for helming “Schindler’s List” (1994) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999). His five other bids came for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1978), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1982), “E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1983), “Munich” (2006), and “Lincoln” (2013). His initial victory was against Campion on her first outing for “The Piano.” Branagh was recognized here in 1990 for “Henry V,” while Anderson has two past directing bids to his name for “There Will Be Blood” (2008) and “Phantom Thread” (2018).
All five of these contenders are nominated in at least one other category this year.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Belfast,” “Don’t Look Up,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” and “The Worst Person in the World.” Our odds currently indicate that “Licorice Pizza” (10/3) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “Belfast” (18/5), “Don’t Look Up” (9/2), “King Richard” (9/2), and “The Worst Person in the World” (9/2).
For the fifth time in eight years, multiple original writing nominees – namely, Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”) – also picked up bids for directing and producing their films. Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay are now the sixth and seventh unique categories that Branagh has earned notices in after Best Actor, Best Director (“Henry V” and “Belfast”), Best Live Action Short, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.

It only takes a bit of “The Witch”-craft and enduring the natural elements for Anya Taylor-Joy to fully feel like herself.
The “Northman” star revealed to British Vogue that she “ecstatically” embraced the elements while shooting the Robert Eggers-helmed Viking revenge epic, which shot in Northern Ireland — including scenes involving standing barefoot in mud or ice-cold ocean water.
“I looked insane. So infuriatingly joyful,” said Taylor-Joy, who it’s noted carried her belongings around in a plastic shopping bag on set during such scenes.
Taylor-Joy likened reuniting with “The Witch” director Eggers, plus cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford, to being back with her “original film family.” And she had no problem jumping — literally — into the period piece.
“The stunt guys would say, ‘Can we get out of the water now?’ And I was like, ‘This is amazing. Nature! We’re outside! We get to make art,...

The show must go on. At least the Venice Film Festival must go on. Even a pandemic can’t stop the oldest international film festival from taking place Sept. 2 through Sept. 12 in the picturesque of grand canals. Of course, safety is first with masks, social distancing etc. are all in place as critics get a first glance at possible award-winners.
Over the past seven years, the festival has held world premieres of such Oscar-winners as 2013’s “Gravity”; 2014’s “Birdman”; 2015’s “Spotlight”; 2016’s “La La Land”; 2017’s “The Shape of Water”; 2018’s “Roma”; and 2019’s “Joker.” Only two films that won the festival’s top prize have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars: 1948’s “Hamlet” and 2017’s “The Shape of Water.”

Christopher Lee, born on this day in 1922, had an amazing career of fantastic performances and remains the greatest villain actor in film history. He was the last classic horror star and Wamg thanks him for all the monster memories.
Christopher Lee was married to his wife Birgit (Gitte) for 54 years.
Here, according to Movie Geeks Jim Batts, Dana Jung, Sam Moffitt, and myself, are Christopher Lee’s ten best roles.

It’s only fitting that The Curse Of Frankenstein, the film that truly began England’s Hammer Studios’ theatrical run of full color gothic horror epics, should team their greatest stars, Peter Cushing as Baron Victor Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as his monster. This was the first big screen incarnation of the monster after Universal’s 30’s and 40’s classics with Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, Glenn Strange, and, of course, Boris Karloff. In 2015, Michaela Coel’s screenwriting debut was the brilliant Chewing Gum, an E4 comedy that earned her two Baftas, an Rts win, several nominations and a considerable weight of expectation for what she’d write next.
What Coel wrote next is I May Destroy You, a BBC-HBO co-production announced last year under the working title of January 22nd. It’s the autobiographically inspired story of Bella (played by Coel), a young London writer whose drink is spiked on a night out. When she tries to piece together the events of what happened, Bella goes on a personal journey through trauma and pain that examines questions of sexual consent, liberation and exploitation in contemporary London.
Arriving on HBO and BBC One this June, here’s the latest trailer and more…

Ethan Hawke stars as an ex-felon looking to right his wrongs in actor-turned-director Logan Marshall-Green’s behind-the-camera debut, “Adopt a Highway,” which hits theaters and VOD on November 1. Watch the first trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis from Rlje Films: “Russ Millings has just been released from prison after serving 21 years for a third strike conviction for possessing an ounce of marijuana. As he tries to adapt to a world he doesn’t recognize – including trying to learn how to use the internet – he finds an abandoned baby in a dumpster behind the fast food restaurant where he works as a dishwasher. Unsure of what to do, and caught between impulses of kindness and panic, Russ soon realizes this could be his chance at redemption.”

Timothée Chalamet became the youngest Best Actor Oscar nominee in nearly 80 years when he landed Academy recognition for “Call Me By Your Name” in 2018, and since then he’s worked non-stop on films with Greta Gerwig, David Michôd, Denis Villeneuve, and Wes Anderson. If anyone is deserving of a small acting break right now, it’s Chalamet. The actor tells Entertainment Weekly he’s “savoring” a break now that he doesn’t have any gig lined up at the moment. “It’s the first time in almost two years I’ve gotten a breath,” Chalamet said.

Touting best-in-class visual effects and a voice cast for the ages (Donald Glover! Beyoncé! James Earl Jones!), The Lion King was undoubtedly one of the great summer blockbusters of 2019.
And it certainly turned in an impressive performance at the worldwide box office, raking in $1.62 billion for Disney – a company that was still riding high after the runaway success of Avengers: Endgame.
That’s not to say The Lion King didn’t have its fair share of detractors, with some critics even going so far as to suggest that transitioning Disney’s Hamlet parable to the realm of live-action was wholly unnecessary, as it robbed the film of its heart and soul. Elton John certainly thinks so, too, after telling GQ that The Lion King of 2019 left him “hugely disappointed,” largely due to the movie’s handling of the original soundtrack.

Actress Eileen Herlie has died from complications resulting from a bout of pneumonia.
The star, real name Eileen Herlihy, passed away on Wednesday, aged 90.
Born in Scotland, Herlie began her career in the late 1940s and landed her first big role in the 1948 film adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, opposite Laurence Olivier, and went on to secure parts in movies like 1958's She Didn't Say No! and 1962's Freud.
Herlie was also noted for her success on the Broadway and West End stages, where she starred opposite Richard Burton in a New York production of Hamlet in 1964. Her turn in Broadway musical Take Me Along also earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical in 1960.
But it was her role as Myrtle Lum Fargate in long-running U.S. TV drama All My Children that earned her the most recognition.
She joined the daytime soap in 1976 and was nominated four times for the Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series between 1983 and 1986.
In recent years, she made guest appearances on sister soaps like One Life To Live, and continued to play Fargate up until her final days.
