The former Sons of Anarchy star is set to play the lead in Prime Video’s highly anticipated Criminal, which is based on a series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker. The series returns Hunnam to the world of organized crime, a genre that’s paid nice dividends for him in between Sons of Anarchy and The Gentlemen. Exclusive: Kadeem Hardison has been set as a series regular in Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video graphic novel series Criminal. He joins the previously announced cast Adria Arjona and Richard Jenkins.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hardison will portray the character Gnarly, an old friend of Leo and Ivan. Gnarly was his nickname as a boxer back in the 1970s and it’s all anyone calls him. He walks with a limp, an old one. Gnarly’s a local legend, and he can go from warm to fierce in a heartbeat. He commands respect, partly because he can inflict massive physical damage, even at his advanced age — and partly because he has the authority and gravitas to stop other men in their tracks.

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.

Jada Smith has endured a rough phase of her life growing up. Her recent memoir Worthy, released last October, is the reminiscence of her that phase of life when she had to sell drugs in her teens. The actor has been vocal about the recognition of Black artists on global platforms.
Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney
While speaking with NPR, the Girls Trip actor meticulously discussed Black Gen X women celebrities, and her stance on this matter is prevalent in movies like A Different World, Jason’s Lyric, Menace II Society, and Set It Off. The actor said that she wanted to connect to those who have experienced the same as her early days because she thinks they were really invisible.

Over the course of her career, Gina Prince-Bythewood has proven she can do it all. Across five films and roughly 20 years, she had made an enduring romantic sports story, a southern family drama, a pop star star-crossed romance, a superhero fantasy action film, and a feminist historical epic. And with every new genre the filmmaker has ticked off her list, Prince-Bythewood has shown a mastery for its particularities every time.
Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Pacific Grove, California, Prince-Bythewood attended University of California in Los Angeles, where she studied film and graduated in 1991. After several years as a writer on TV shows like “A Different World” and “South Central,” her first film, 2000’s “Love and Basketball,” was released to critical acclaim. The story of two childhood best friends with a shared love for basketball — and a chronicle of their tumultuous relationship through the years as they both seek...

Hollywood star Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet have resolved their divorce. The court documents filed in the Superior Court of California confirmed the dissolution of the former couple’s marriage.
This comes after Bonet, 56, filed for divorce on Monday. The ‘Aquaman’ star, 44, and ‘The Cosby Show’ alum had seemingly worked out the terms of their divorce prior to the filing, reports People magazine.
According to their Marital Settlement Agreement, or Msa, “they each are fully satisfied with regard to the disclosures provided” and “they are sufficiently knowledgeable about the terms of the Msa, the value of the assets divided between them and the incomes of each of them.”
As per People, the pair, who tied the knot on October 7, 2017, share two kids: daughter Lola, 16, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 15. Bonet is also mom to actress Zoe Kravitz with ex-husband Lenny Kravitz.

Lisa Bonet has filed for divorce from Jason Momoa 18 years after the two actors became a couple.
The 56-year-old Bonet, whose legal name is Lilakoi Moon, filed documents to end her marriage to the 44-year-old Momoa in Los Angeles County court on Monday. The filing comes nearly two years after they announced their separation.
The petition cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The filing says neither person should get financial support and that the two have agreed on how to split their assets. The documents say they should have joint custody of their 16-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son.
Momoa is best known for his roles in the Aquaman movies and on Game of Thrones. Bonet was a star of The Cosby Show, its spinoff A Different World, and the films High Fidelity and Enemy of the State.

As of Saturday night, Judith Light and Jasmine Guy were finally able to add “Emmy winner” to their list of career achievements. The pair picked up trophies on the first night of the two-part Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

“This one is about the fact that this Academy has acknowledged me in this way, which is huge,” said Light, who earned four previous nominations and has two daytime Emmys – this marked her first Primetime win. She won guest actress in a comedy series for her turn opposite Natasha Lyonne on Peacock’s “Poker Face.” “I’ve been in the business a long time. If you’re a child of the nineties, chances are you grew up loving Sinbad. Also known as David Atkins, Sinbad began his comedy career as a contestant on Star Search before nabbing his breakout role on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, where he played Coach Walter Oakes; he served as a mentor to the main cast, who all played students at the fictional Hillman College. His distinctive look made him instantly identifiable, and it wasn’t long before he started showing up in movies, with roles in Necessary Roughness and Coneheads.
His career was unusual because most people went to TV after their movie careers cooled down. For Sinbad, it was the opposite. His solo TV show, The Sinbad Show, was a flop, but shortly afterwards, his movie career went into high gear, with him appearing in a string of hit movies. His biggest hit was Houseguest opposite the late Phil Hartman,...

NBC wasted no time getting into the “why” of its exclusive sit-down interview with the polarizing Jada Pinkett Smith for Jada’s Story: An NBC News Special With Hoda Kotb.
The broadcast began with an image of Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, hitting Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars and Pinkett Smith voicing her disbelief in that moment with, “I looked at Will and I said, ‘You hit Chris,’” with her physically appearing on the screen while speaking the words. “Like, ‘You actually hit Chris,’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah.’”
More images of the slap heard around the world played before teasing the previously shared bombshells that she and Smith have lived separate lives since 2016 and that Chris Rock asked her out. When the special finally kicks off, Kotb is with Pinkett Smith at her old high school, Baltimore School for the Arts. But it’s not long before another famous man in her life,...

Will Smith was told the best way to land women was to resort to violence
Smith has been very candid about his dating experiences in the past. Many of the women in his life shaped Smith into being the megastar that he is today. As a teenager, a nasty break-up partially drove the actor to be as successful as he became.

There is much that is lovely to gaze upon in the elegantly tailored documentary “Invisible Beauty,” about fashion maverick Bethann Hardison, whose role in her industry, starting in the late ’60s and continuing into the present, has been remarkable personally and game-changing culturally.
Those five decades — hers and the industry’s — are expertly woven together by co-directors Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng, using a cache of personal photos, a wealth of archival images, clips and interviews sewn together by Hardison’s sharing of recollections and insights. The film is also buoyed by a delicate, sometimes moody piano-led score courtesy of Marc Anthony Thompson, with some additionally vivid musical choices that match the energy of the late, “Black is Beautiful” ’60s and the fashion-fast-forward ’70s.

Fashion pioneer Bethann Hardison is turning the camera on her own legacy. Documentary “Invisible Beauty,” co-directed by Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng (“Dior and I”), premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and later screened at Tribeca in the spring. The feature charts model and modeling agent Hardison’s impact on the fashion industry after having pushed the boundaries of what being a supermodel looks like.
Per the official synopsis: “In her lifetime, Bethann Hardison has seen the pendulum swing toward and away from the Black model. At every setback, she spoke up and rallied her colleagues and clients in the industry to advance change. Now in her 70s, the Brooklyn native is writing her memoir, taking stock of her own legacy at a moment when the fashion industry was shaken by discrimination. Remember AMC’s “The Walking Dead”? You know, the biggest series on TV at one time. Most-watched basic cable show in history, and I can guarantee that will never be topped. But yet, an Emmy dud. The series (which will live on via a frenzy of spin-offs) ended its run last November after 11 seasons… and it’s still ignored by TV Academy voters, failing to pick up a single nomination on Wednesday.
And yet… this may have been the most successful year at the Emmys ever for “The Walking Dead.” That’s because two of the franchise’s most beloved actors, Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthal, picked up their first-ever Emmy nominations. Granted, it’s not for “The Walking Dead” — Yeun is nominated in lead limited/anthology actor for “Beef” and Bernthal is a comedy guest actor nominee for “The Bear” (which is about… Chicago’s “Beef” restaurant) — but at...

In the three decades since School Daze and the equally influential TV series A Different World were released, HBCUs, or historically Black colleges and universities, have seen a resurgence of much-needed attention. The level of solidarity among striking WGA writers has been a powerful force during these first few weeks of the writers strike. Seeing it in action on picket lines is a good reminder for the industry at large that there’s a special camaraderie among those who know what it’s like to stare at a blank screen, search for inspiration and then type away at draft after draft to get the words just right.
That’s true for novelists as much as it is for screenwriters. Often those are one and the same — and because we live in an age where pre-sold IP usually makes it easier to sell a TV project, there have never been more series based on books than there are right now.

“Red Table Talk,” the often-viral online talk show hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, was canceled by Meta on Wednesday.
It was the last of the Facebook Watch Originals, which included “Steve on Watch” with Steve Harvey and “Piece of Mind with Taraji,” hosted by Taraji P. Henson.
According to Deadline, which first reported the news, series producer Westbrook is shopping the series elsewhere. Smith’s cohosts are her daughter Willow and her mother Adrienne Banfield Norris. TheWrap has reached out to the series’ reps for comment.
The cancellation of the Emmy-winning series comes as Mina Lefevre, Head of Development and Programing at Facebook Watch, exits the tech company amid the most recent round of Meta layoffs.

Herb Lazarus, the veteran TV distribution executive who spent nearly 70 years in the business, including the past 27 with Carsey-Werner, died Tuesday in Los Angeles, a spokesperson for the company announced. He was 88.
At Carsey-Werner Television Distribution, where he most recently served as international TV president, Lazarus put into place massive deals globally — many still in place today — for such hits as That ’70s Show, Roseanne, The Cosby Show, 3rd Rock From the Sun, A Different World, Cybill, Grace Under Fire and Grounded for Life.
“Herb was so warm and fun to be around, but when it came to getting business done, he was among the greats of the industry,” Carsey-Werner Television president and COO Robert Dubelko said in a statement. “Everyone here is extremely sad but can’t help but smile recounting his poker-playing face and the countless laughs it delivered to all of us.”

Herb Lazarus, who spent the past 27 years as international TV president for Carsey-Werner Television Distribution during his nearly 70-year career and is in the International TV Distribution Hall of Fame, died Tuesday. He was 88.
Carsey-Werner Television announced the news but did not give other details.
At Carsey-Werner, Lazarus put into place massive global deals for its comedies including The Cosby Show, Roseanne, That ‘70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, A Different World, Cybill, Grace Under Fire and Grounded for Life — – many of which remain in place today.

It’s time to break out the good hair and sip on some celebratory champagne because HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show has returned for its fourth season tonight. Keeping in theme with the series’ previous seasons, creator and star Robin Thede, alongside her mainstay cast members Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend, continues to highlight the niche inner workings of the Black American community through absurdist humor and topical commentary. Season 4 ushers in three series newcomers, TikTok personality DaMya Gurley, The Voice star Tamara Jade, actress Angel Laketa Moore along with a special bevy of guest stars including Jackée Harry, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Colman Domingo, who suffers a hilariously awkward interview with fan-favorite character Dr. Hadassah Olayinka Ali-Youngman Pre-PhD.
Here, Thede spoke to Deadline about the importance of creating Black female comedy, collaborating with her new cast and guest stars, and how she manages to maintain the funny.
