Apart from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and The Matrix (1999) that were absolute bangers at the time and are still considered cult classics, we can’t really say that the decade of 1990s was fruitful in terms of worth-watching sci-fi movies that left a mark on history.
We’re going to talk about a movie that was forgotten just like hundreds of 90s science fiction flicks. It deserves much more attention as it brings surrealism to the genre and breaks its canons: here, it is a person who does most of the evil, not an alien or a robot.
The intricate plot of the film revolves around Bill, a disgraced writer struggling through a creative crisis, severe drug addiction and failed relationship. His wife Joan gets used to stealing his supplies and messing around with reckless Beat poets.
The apotheosis of Bill’s troubles is reached when he kills Joan. The...

On Aug. 29, 1997, everything changes. That’s the stark warning we’re presented with in the teaser for Terminator Zero, the eight-episodeanime series coming to Netflix on Aug. 29, 2024, featuring the voice of Timothy Olyphant as the Terminator.
In Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led highest grossing film of 1991, it’s revealed that Aug. 29, 1997 is the date that the artificial intelligence network known as Skynet becomes self-aware and usurps its human masters, leading to an all-out war between humanity and machines. Encompassing flesh-and-blood resistance fighters and time-traveling cyborgs, this battle spans across the last decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st.
Terminator Zero will be part of the Terminator universe but will center on characters we haven’t met yet. Keep reading if you want to live … or if you want to know everything there is to know so far about Terminator Zero.

You don't need all your fingers to count the Marvel Comics stories more influential than "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
In the dark future of 2013, America has been conquered by the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Most of the X-Men are gone, mutants live in concentration camps, and the world stands on its nuclear brink as the other nations prepare to strike against the Sentinels. To prevent this apocalypse, X-Woman Kate Pryde travels back in time.
You see, things went to Hell on Halloween 1980. Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants assassinated anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly, intent on showing humanity they will supplant them as the Cro-Magnon did the Neanderthal. Instead, this event inflamed anti-mutant sentiment and led to the Sentinel takeover. If Kelly isn't assassinated, maybe this awful future will never happen.
"Days of Future Past" was Byrne's penultimate story on his original "X-Men" and he goes with a banger.

A simple story, non-stop action directed by James Cameron, and a charismatic villain with memorable lines are all it takes to turn a low-budget movie into an instant classic. The Terminator is a gripping thriller, a survival drama, and a time-travel science fiction movie. Three genres – one great movie.
Judgement Day is perhaps one of the best sequels of all time, which, like any good sequel, does not exploit the merits of the original, but reinterprets them. It was Judgment Day that forever cemented the franchise in the cultural code and made James Cameron the most important blockbuster director of our time.
After the second installment, however, the franchise began to decline. Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Genisys stagnated in the same place without giving the audience anything new, but 2008 brought Terminator fans a real gift – the Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Launched in 1985 after the first film in the franchise cemented its place as a cornerstone of sci-fi cinema, the sequels that followed became cult classics, by bending the futuristic genre with Wild West adventures.

"There is no future but what we make for ourselves" — the guiding principle of the Terminator franchise. Unfortunately, the real-life principle has largely amounted to, "There is no future but what Hollywood makes for the rest of us." This is one of those franchises where studios have rebooted, soft-rebooted, legacy-sequeled, and generally mangled what was once an innovative and interesting storyline into an incomprehensible mess — to the point that the saga's main star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is now done with the franchise.
It's a sad state of affairs for this once great sci-fi story. Still, there's hope as long as creator James Cameron harbors a desire to make another Terminator movie based on A.I. This article contains full spoilers for Atlas.
After surviving an attack orchestrated by the rogue synthetic Harlan (Simu Liu), cyber analyst Atlas (Jennifer Lopez) lands in her mech-suit on a mysterious new planet. And it is there that she notices a strange flower, which the artificial intelligence Smith (voiced by Gregory James Cohan) informs her has never been seen before. When Smith asks what she wants to call the flower, Atlas responds with an uncreative name: “Planty.”
Although Atlas insists that she’s making a joke, Smith accepts the name, and Planty returns at the end of the film as a symbol of the bond formed between human and robot. At the same time, this dull bit of nomenclature illustrates the way AI destroys creativity. Which seems an apt metaphor for the movie it’s in. Because as directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite,...

Almost every strand of DNA within Atlas’ genetic makeup is toxic. The haphazard, ham-handed sci-fi film, distributed by a streamer that utilizes computer algorithms to guide its creative process, revolves around a guilt-riddled heroine fighting “evil” artificial intelligence with the help of a “good” artificial intelligence.

After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. Tim Burton’s Batman had firmly introduced the idea of the huge opening weekend at the box office, and that a movie could become a cultural phenomenon. That patrons would leave the cinema and promptly seek out the soundtrack, the computer game, the book, the T-shirt, the novelty undercrackers.

Arriving on the heels of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” — a true milestone of superstar transparency where Jennifer Lopez expressed a clear-eyed view of her current career status — “Atlas” feels like an underwhelming return to the kind of projects that have maintained Lopez’ place in the Hollywood firmament, but not the ones that catapulted her there in the first place.
One of her few science fiction-themed films, its novelty alone should make it stand out, especially with Brad Peyton, a reliable purveyor of large-scale spectacle in the director’s chair. But a dearth of original ideas undercuts the appeal of “Atlas,” leaving Lopez to fend for herself in much the same way her character is forced to in the film’s formulaic story.
Lopez plays the title character, a coffee-addicted, “rigid and hostile” data analyst whose mother Val (Lana Parilla) developed the first artificial-intelligence being, Harlan (Simu Liu), when Atlas was just a child.

The pop culture nostalgia cycle might have moved on to the early 2000s, but for many filmmakers and movie fans, the '80s will never go out of style. That's certainly true for director Ti West, who returns this year with the third chapter of his horror trilogy that started with 2022's "X" and was shortly followed by a surprise prequel, "Pearl." Star Mia Goth will return for this summer's bloody conclusion, "MaXXXine," in which aspiring adult film star (and massacre survivor) Maxine Minx is now trying to break into mainstream movies with a role in horror movie "The Puritan II."
"MaXXXine" is set in 1985 Los Angeles, six years after the events of "X." West recently told Empire magazine that "the '80s aspect of it was a natural, chronological thing" -- but that it was also a great opportunity to draw inspiration from '80s movies. For many people,...

10. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967)
With the backdrop of the Civil War, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is already pretty epic by default — but it only gets better. Three bounty hunters have to forge an uneasy alliance to find stolen gold before their competitor does, but they don’t trust each other and anyone else. High stakes, high tension, and pure adrenaline.
You can watch The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. The Godfather (1972)
The first movie in Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic trilogy, The Godfather is often dubbed the best gangster movie in history, and that might just be right. Post-wwii America is still largely ruled by the mafia, and the wise and cunning Godfather leads one of them through tumultuous times as he prepares a transfer of power in the family.

Actor Robert Patrick has appeared in several popular films, but his most iconic performance came in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the sequel, Patrick plays a highly advanced cyborg sent on a mission to the past to kill a child. Patrick convincingly plays the robotic aspects of the character, making his performance memorable.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick co-starred in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day
However, Patrick had to undergo an unbelievable training process to prepare him for the gun-shooting scenes in the movie. Patrick trained relentlessly so that he would not blink during the shooting scenes, making him appear more robotic. Here is how Patrick trained for his gun-shooting scenes in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a sequel to 1984’s The Terminator, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800, an advanced cyborg from the future.

Terminator Zero is all set to take us back into the world of Skynet, this time in the form of an anime series. Despite being set in the universe created by the legendary filmmaker James Cameron in 1984, the upcoming Netflix show will present a new take on the popular franchise.
A still from Terminator Zero
Following the renowned Arnold Schwarzenegger 1984 film, Terminator has spawned several movies, series, and video games. However, the franchise has seen a steady decline in its popularity over time with some of the worst films like Genisys and Salvation.
Several fans hoped that the upcoming series might use its classic time-travel trope to give justice to the underwhelming Terminator films in some ways. Unfortunately, such a thing is now impossible as the showrunner revealed that Terminator Zero will not mess with the canon in any way.

There have been a few different dates for Judgment Day in the Terminator series, but for fans of James Cameron's blockbuster 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day , that date is August 29. That's also when Netflix, Skydance and anime studio Production I.G's Terminator Zero animated series is set to premiere this year. Terminator Zero showrunner and executive producer Mattson Tomlin shared a first look and some additional details in an exclusive summer preview with Entertainment Weekly . According to Tomlin, the eight-episode series keeps all of the main films as canon while moving the story to Tokyo. A wholly original cast—devoid of the Connors who typically stand at the center of the saga—will be in the spotlight in a story set in 1997, on the bleeding edge of Judgment Day. Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

In Jon Favreau's 2008 superhero film "Iron Man," Tony Stark spends a large portion of the movie inventing and building a high-tech, skintight suit of armor that is equipped with rocket boosters, missiles, and automated servos that increase Tony's physical strength. In order to put the suit on, Tony required an additional, assembly-line-like machine that sealed the various pieces of the armor around his body.
In the many "Iron Man" sequels that followed, however, the process of getting in and out of the suit became quicker and more streamlined. In one film, Tony thrusts his fists into a briefcase, and his suit stretches and assembles around him. Later, the "assembly line" process is so swift that Tony can remove his suit without having to stop walking. Eventually -- and perhaps boringly -- the suit became a sort of liquid metal like in "Terminator 2," shlorping around Tony almost instantly.

Alien artist Hr Giger was involved in a number of film projects in the 1980s and 90s. We talk to filmmaker William Malone about some amazing films that never happened.
Given just how genre-defining 1979’s Alien was, it’s perhaps surprising that Hr Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title monster, wasn’t involved in more films. His creations appeared in the likes of Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Species (1995), plus a little-seen German indie comedy horror called Killer Condoms (1996), but none were as high-profile or influential as Alien.
In the wake of that genre-defining space horror, other artists and designers tinkered with Giger’s unforgettable xenomorph in its sequels. Giger wasn’t involved in the making of Aliens, Alien Resurrection or subsequent prequels or spin-offs, and his work for Alien 3 was barely used. Well, we haven’t quite reached the future dystopian hellscape promised by 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day yet. However, when we do – and the human race is fighting for its life against sentient AIs hellbent on our destruction – this day may seem like a key step in that direction.
According to Brian Helgeland, the director of 2001’s A Knight’s Tale, Netflix passed on making a sequel to his movie because its algorithm told executives that the film wouldn’t be a success.
Oh dear. Assuming this story is true, it marks another depressing step in the surrendering of our creative powers on the altar of technology.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies of all time. The science-fiction tale has over the years become a cult classic, drawing a new generation of audience every year. Starring as T-800, it was also this role that helped Schwarzenegger climb the mountain of fame and acclaim and become a Hollywood star.

Linda Hamilton has been one of the trailblazers who changed the industry’s stereotypical portrayal of women in film. Actresses like Sigourney Weaver and Hamilton showed that women can be total badasses and can hold themselves against danger. Hamilton’s role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator series has been the most popular role of her career.

However, that tough and incredible role became a detriment to her career as she got typecast in similar roles and was not getting diverse projects. The actress recently revealed that she was tired of being tough on camera, and landing a meaningful part in Stranger Things prevented her from taking a retirement from acting.

"Enter our Miniwood world!!" Click play and have fun with this Hollywood tribute. A design studio based in Athens, Greece called Yeti Pictures has debuted a 74-second long animated short film called Miniwood. This was created by the studio in their spare time as a way to promote their work and honor their favorite movies from growing up. "It's always hard to find spare time between commercial work to make these short films happen but team projects are what keeps Yeti moving forward and keeps our passion for animation alive." Directed by Yeti's Tony Zagoraios, famous scenes from these movies are recreated in their "miniworld style," with miniature characters that are direct references to action figures or toys. It features homages to classics including Jurassic Park, The Exorcist, King Kong, The Addams Family, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and RoboCop. I'd watch vignettes like this for 100 more movies!

Arnold Schwarzenegger has accomplished a fair bit in his life. The man came over from Austria having served in the army, claimed the Mr. Olympia title a full seven times, then launched one of the most successful Hollywood careers in the history of the industry, before becoming governor of California and finding time to marry a Kennedy in the process. But surely what he's really concerned with are his Rotten Tomato scores.

Earlier today, we shared a quote from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day writer/director James Cameron where he expressed regret about some of the things he brought to the screen in those movies. Now, we have some positive news to share regarding the Terminator franchise: SuperHeroHype reports that the Terminator comic book license has been acquired by Dynamite Entertainment.
There have been a lot of Terminator comic books published over the decades. Marvel Comics brought us some Terminator 2 comic books back in 1991, with Malibu Comics bringing us some more T2 comics a few years later. Beckett Comics published some Terminator 3 books, Now Comics published some The Terminator books. Dark Horse Comics published a ton of Terminator-related books over the course of several years, including mini-series where the Terminator universe crossed over with the likes of RoboCop, Superman, Aliens, and Predators. Action became his signature genre, defining several years of his illustrious career. With that said, he also declared war on a very toxic trend prevalent in the fitness industry that is killing it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has existed at the very core of Hollywood for decades now. From winning Mr. Olympia multiple times to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger has done it all. While the Austrian Oak has made his presence felt in some of the biggest blockbusters, the Terminator series cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s leading superstars.

While the bodybuilding champion was the bonafide talisman of the James Cameron films, he forged an excellent partnership with his co-star Linda Hamilton who played a pivotal role as Sarah Connor in the Terminator series. But Schwarzenegger was surprised to hear from his colleague that she was initially reluctant to pair up with him due to certain preconceived notions that she had about films and the actor.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

"The Terminator" is a perfect movie. /Film's own Jacob Hall has argued director James Cameron has never surpassed it. Cameron knows how to get his money's worth from Titanic-sized budgets and the filmmaking world is a better place when he gets to reach the peak of his ambitions. Still, "The Terminator" — a lean sci-fi slasher that's both exciting and foreboding — shows that Cameron could still spin gold with more modest tools.
Even if "The Terminator" isn't much of an actor's picture, it's well-cast, particularly Michael Biehn as haggard time traveler Kyle Reese and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg assassin. This film was a key step in Schwarzenegger's climb to being the biggest movie star in the world. Even so, it's something of a Hollywood legend how these two weren't the initial picks for these roles.
In particular, it's spread through the grapevine that O.J. Simpson was considered to star as the Terminator.

"Grand Theft Auto V" is one of the biggest video games of all time, which in turn paved the way for a huge player base in "Grand Theft Auto Online." For a couple of out-of-work actors, it provided them a space to do the thing they missed the most during the pandemic: acting. While "GTA" is a place to commit crimes in a carefree, digital environment, a couple of guys named Sam and Mark turned it into the most unlikely venue to play host to some of William Shakespeare's work.
"Grand Theft Hamlet" is a new documentary that chronicles Sam and Mark's journey from merely playing "GTA" to hatching a plan to put on a production of "Hamlet" staged entirely in the game. The film recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I am here to tell you that it's unlike any other movie you've ever seen before.

“I wanted to experiment: can I develop a family which was not unlike my own upbringing?” says Nicolas Cage, while talking to Den of Geek about his new movie Arcadian, which premiered at SXSW 2024. “My dad did most of the heavy lifting, he did the raising because my mom sadly couldn’t be around. So it was just my father, and in this case, myself and my older brother. I saw that family dynamic in the [Elia] Kazan picture, East of Eden.”
From that description, you might imagine Arcadian to be an austere drama, something that takes place in a rustic farm house and focuses on the complex relationship between a father struggling to do right by his two boys. And you’d mostly be right… mostly.
But then Cage completes his thought. “And then I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting if this little family nucleus was contending with...

One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. What does it mean to be a strong woman? Is it visible muscles à la Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2: Judgment Day? Is it impressive feats of strength like climbing a mountain or braving white water? Is it putting yourself in harm’s way to save a friend? As it turns out, the answer is all–and none–of the above. There is no one way to be a “strong woman.” Sometimes it’s as simple as just showing up for the hard moments. Writer/director Neil Marshall explores the concept of female strength in his 2005 The Descent, a harrowing story of friendship and betrayal, strength and survival. In their latest episode, the Lady Killers kick off a series on Hidden Horrors by descending into the complicated themes of this terrifying film and facing off against the monsters lurking within the human heart.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from the wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
The list of sequels to masterpieces that can be considered masterpieces themselves isn’t a very long one; “The Godfather Part II” is an obvious candidate, and arguments can be made for James Cameron‘s “Aliens” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “The Color of Money” all have their partisans, and Ingmar Bergman scored a late-career triumph with his “Scenes From a Marriage” sequel “Saraband.” One movie that almost never gets mentioned in this company is “The Two Jakes,” the 1990 sequel to “Chinatown” directed by its star,...

In a stunning cinematic universe where sand dunes rise like mountains and the fate of galaxies hangs in the balance, Denis Villeneuve’s first voyage into the Frank Herbert’s “Dune” saga clinched six of its 10 Oscar nominations. Yet, in a twist as dramatic as Dr. Wellington killing Duke Leto, Villeneuve found himself overlooked in the best director category — a snub that left fans (and pundits) in disbelief. I dare the Academy’s Directors Branch to make such an omission once again.
As “Dune: Part Two” unfolds, we dive back into the treacherous universe alongside Paul Atreides, played by the ever-charismatic Timothée Chalamet. Seeking vengeance for his father’s death (Oscar Isaac), Paul’s journey intertwines with new allies and enemies, portrayed by a constellation of stars including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem and Christopher Walken.
