As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. The hopeful bids from creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar include acting recognition for breakout performer Hoa Xuande and superstar Robert Downey Jr., as well as outstanding limited or anthology series.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 debut novel, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of “The Captain” (Xuande), a North Vietnamese soldier in the South Vietnamese army who is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to spy on the community, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Another legal drama is coming to our screens this summer, and this time, Jake Gyllenhaal is taking the lead.
While there's no shortage of legal and crime dramas, we certainly aren't going to complain about another series joining the roster.
As far as Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent goes, we're excited to see what this drama will bring us this summer.
Presumed Innocent Plot
Presumed Innocent follows Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) as his life is turned upside down.
A promising Chicago prosecutor, he quickly finds himself on the other side of the legal system when he becomes the prime suspect in a case revolving around the murder of someone in his office.
The show follows Rusty Sabich as he does anything and everything he can to declare his innocence while keeping his family and friends safe from harm.
If the title and story sound familiar to you, that's because it's...

Robert Downey Jr. is the Oscar-winning actor and three-time nominee who has had his share of ups-and-downs. He’s been more in demand than ever lately thanks in large part to the highly popular “Avengers” series, in which he played billionaire superhero Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) to great acclaim. Tour through our photo gallery of his 21 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
The son of underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Downey, he made his acting debut at age five in his father’s film “Pound” (1970). He received his first Oscar nomination in 1992: Best Actor for his performance as silent movie legend Charles Chaplin in “Chaplin.” It took 16 years for him to return to the Oscar race: Best Supporting Actor for his role as an Australian actor who surgically alters himself to play an African-American platoon leader in “Tropic Thunder” (2008).

Robert Downey Jr. has traded an iron suit for Oscar gold.
The actor took home best supporting actor at the Oscars 2024 for his work as in Oppenheimer as Lewis Strauss, with the win marking a high point in a career full of dramatic twists and turns.
“I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy in that order,” Downey began his speech, to laughs. “I’d like to thank my veterinarian — I mean wife, Susan Downey, over there. She found me a snarly, rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here.”
After rising to earn a best actor nomination for the Charlie Chaplin biopic Chaplin (1992), Downey went on to earn a Golden Globe for his work on the hit TV hit Ally McBeal, but faced a career implosion following drug charges and time in prison. But then, his career had an...

Actress and Harrison Ford’s wife Calista Flockhart is called the “scare monster” at home because she can’t resist playing practical jokes on her husband but ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ star isn’t afraid to get his own back on her.
“I’m called the ‘Scare Monster’ in my house because I hide behind every corner,” Flockhart told the New York Times newspaper.
“And so Harrison will walk in, and then I’ll go, ‘Raaah!’ And he’ll go, ‘W-uy-aah!’ And then I die laughing. I’ll put a plastic spider inside his big ice cubes in the tray, and then he’ll drink it. But then I’ll go to bed two weeks later, and he’s out of town in Jackson, and I’ll take the covers down and there’s this little rubber scorpion. It’s fun.”

“It is with deep profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful only child together, Haylee Graham, has passed away today. We are completely devastated especially our daughter Haley,” Lavelle wrote.
Lavelle said she met Graham when he was the co-lead in the 1980s science-fiction series “Alien Nation,” adding that he had many other credits, including “All the Right Moves” with Tom Cruise.

One week after Jo Koy received an “F” grade for hosting the Golden Globes, all eyes were on Anthony Anderson as he stepped foot on the Emmys stage for the first time as an emcee. The comedian and actor kept audiences entertained for three hours on Fox with his constant musical performances, including “The Facts of Life,” “Good Times” and “Miami Vice.” Meanwhile, his loving Mama, Doris Hancox, interrupted winners on the big stage if their speeches went on too long.
In all, the majority of Emmy viewers gave Anderson a passing grade for his inaugural hosting abilities, according to Gold Derby’s overnight poll. Here are the complete poll results:
B — I rather liked him — 37%
A — Brilliant from start to finish! — 28%
F — Awful, awful, awful — 19%
C — He was just okay — 9%

"Better Call Saul" is officially one of the best Emmy-losing shows of all time. During Monday's 75th Primetime Emmys telecast, the acclaimed AMC series went home empty-handed for the sixth season in a row, bringing its tally up to an impressively depressing zero wins and 53 losses. According to Variety, that means the drama has the worst Emmys track record of any nominee in the award show's history.
Emmy voters clearly have a penchant for acknowledging the "Breaking Bad" prequel enough to nominate it in several key categories, yet leave it out in the cold when the time comes to actually hand out trophies. Most recently, the show earned nods for stars Rhea Seehorn and Bob Odenkirk, as well as writers Peter Gould and Gordon Smith. "Better Call Saul" also made it into the competitive Outstanding Drama Series category -- as it has every year since its release. The specific episodes...

Three shows dominated the 2023 Emmy Awards, ‘Succession’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘Beef’. Each show nearly swept their respective category in the drama, comedy and limited series races.
‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ tied with a leading six wins each and ‘Beef’ followed closely with five awards, reports ‘Variety’.
Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 75th Emmy Awards provided multiple tributes to hit shows of the past as well as the present. The casts of series like ‘Cheers’, ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Ally McBeal’, ‘Martin’ reunited for the night, while former cast members of shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and the ever-Emmy-ignored comedy ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ took the stage to present awards.

You may have heard that the 75th edition of the Emmy Awards is finally happening on Monday, capping a nearly four-month delay resulting from the twin WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I think “Gunsmoke” and “The Andy Griffith Show” were still all the rage when this process began, JFK was President and a loaf of bread was a quarter. Alas, I exaggerate (though just a bit). But for this and no doubt other reasons, the TV Academy is clearly in a nostalgic mood, slating mini-reunions and tributes to and/or visual recreations of a dozen shows to mark the occasion.
The idea, according to the Emmy producers, is to honor television throughout the decades of its existence, from the 1950s (“I Love Lucy”), to the 1960s (“The Carol Burnett Show”), the 1970s (“All in the Family”), the 1980s (“Cheers”) and the 1990s (“Ally McBeal” and “Martin”) through the early 2000s.

Updated Jan. 12, 11:20 a.m.: Updated to include more reunions information, plus additional presenters and performers.
Fox is bringing back two of its 1990s staples — “Martin” and “Ally McBeal” — for one night only. The two shows are among the roster of cast reunions planned for the 75th Emmys on Fox this Monday.
Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay have planned a ceremony that leans heavily on the history of TV, given the award’s diamond anniversary. Tributes and reunions will focus on decades from the 1950s to the present.
“I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay says of the reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. If we can bring some nostalgia to that stage,...

Los Angeles, Jan 8 (Ians) Biographical thriller film ‘Oppenheimer’ directed by Christopher Nolan is gaining momentum at the Golden Globe Awards as after Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Male, the film won the Best Score – Motion Picture award.
Composer Ludwig Goransson, who designed the haunting score for the film, took the trophy home.

For the most part, I agree with the combined Golden Globes predictions from Gold Derby’s Experts, Editors and Users in film and television. I mean, how can anyone bet against such heavy favorites as Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”)? However, on several occasions I’m going rogue and ignoring the consensus of my fellow awards pundits. Below, see my four “no guts, no glory” predictions for performers that I believe will walk up to the podium on Sunday, January 7 despite not being #1 in our racetrack odds.

I recently argued that the Oscar races for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress are effectively over, explaining five reasons why Bradley Cooper in “Maestro” and Danielle Brooks in “The Color Purple” have those respective categories virtually locked up.
I had been reluctant to call another acting contest, especially one in which there’s already a solid frontrunner. I was truly hoping for some serious suspense, with a major surprise awaiting us at the Academy Awards ceremony in March.
Unfortunately, I have no choice but to finally jump on an already crowded bandwagon. Here are five reasons why Robert Downey Jr. is almost certain to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer.”
1. He’s someone whom the academy really wants to honor.
He became a major young star in the 1980’s, with appearances in films like “Weird Science,” “Back to School,” “The Pick-Up Artist” and “Less Than Zero.” He...

Peter White, who starred in ABC’s “All My Children” from 1974-1980 as Lincoln Tyler, has died at the age of 86. White’s death was confirmed by his costar Kathleen Noone to multiple news outlets.
In addition to the soap opera White also starred in the stage and film adaptations of “The Boys in the Band” as well as the drama series “Sisters.” He also made appearances on “Ally McBeal,” “The X-Files,” “The West Wing,” “Jag,” and more.
White was the third actor to take on the role of Tyler. After leaving the role in 1980, he returned for short stints in 1981, 1984, 1986, 1995, and 2005.
He joined the off-Broadway cast of “The Boys in the Band” in 1968 as Alan McCarthy. The play is about a group of gay men who are attending a birthday party in Manhattan; at the end of the play, it is unclear if White’s character is gay.

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.

Whenever people find out what I do for a living lately, it’s the first thing out of their mouth. And I never have a good answer for them.
“Why are shows like ‘The Bear,” “Barry” and “Atlanta” contending at the Emmys in comedy series?
It’s a perfectly good question that has no single accurate response. But it isn’t for lack of trying. It’s the same conundrum that I had when “The Bear” in particular was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes last January. I’ve watched both seasons of the show closely over the past several weeks, checking to see if maybe there was just something I’d been missing. I found a couple of moments that were worth a modest chuckle – such as the time Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) had only a vague notion of what Ups was until reminded by Sydney (Ayo Edebiri). But in the main,...

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Robert Downey Jr. is a name everyone knows. His charismatic persona and ageless style has occupied the pop culture zeitgeist for the majority of the 21st century. Having topped Forbes’ list of Highest Paid Actors from 2012-2015 and winning a whopping seven People’s Choice Awards in the 2010s alone, he’s arguably the most popular actor of the 21st century. This is largely due to his portrayal of Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The box office success of his first film with Marvel, 2009’s “Iron Man,” marked the start of the most financially successful and iconic franchise in the history of modern cinema. Downey Jr. starred in 9 MCU films as Iron Man and in the process raked up just shy of $350 million in salary.
His final film as Stark, “Avengers: Endgame,” marked the end of a groundbreaking era for Hollywood. The film...

Viral comedy sensation “Jury Duty,” is an Amazon Freevee original comedy series that follows 29-year-old man Ronald Gladden as he is appointed juror in a civil trial alongside 15 others. What he doesn’t know, however, is that the trial is fake, and that his fellow jurors, the judge, even the security guards… they’re are all actors.
One of Ronald’s fellow fake jurors is James Marsden, who plays a satirical version of himself in the show. Some may believe being yourself to be an easy task, but what Marsden pulls off in “Jury Duty” eclipses the entire field this year in terms of difficulty. And it’s for this reason he could land an Emmy nomination this year in Comedy Supporting Actor.

Calista Flockhart took a walk down memory lane at the Los Angeles premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on Wednesday.
The actress attended the premiere to support husband Harrison Ford’s fifth and final performance as the iconic character in the film, which is set to hit theaters June 30. But that didn’t stop Flockhart from having her moment in the same golden yellow Ralph Lauren Skirt that she initially wore to the Emmy Awards in 1999.
Elizabeth Stewart, Flockhart’s longtime stylist, also took to Instagram to show off the memorable outfit, which included a black off-the-shoulder top to coincide with the shining skirt. The actress previously finished off the look in a white button-down shirt.
“#CalistaFlockhart heading to the Los Angeles premiere of #IndianaJones in the same golden yellow @ralphlauren skirt she wore to the Emmys in 1999!” Stewart wrote in the post’s caption. “Cherish and rewear your clothes people!

By now, the final line of the first MCU movie is iconic: “I am Iron Man.” And not only do we all know that the line was delivered by Robert Downey Jr., many of us also know that it was improvised, one of the many instances of the cast taking an improv approach to the film. But it almost never happened, as MCU chief Kevin Feige originally had someone else in mind to don the stylish facial hair of reformed weaponeer Tony Stark.
During the commencement address to graduates of the University of Southern California (via The Direct), Feige sought to teach the assembly a lesson about dealing with unmet expectations. When casting Iron Man, Feige and the other producers at the newly-formed Marvel Studios searched for an actor with “the perfect mix of heart and strength and charisma.” This actor would be the center of the movie that would launch a franchise,...

Australian comedian and entertainer Barry Humphries, best known for his character Dame Edna Everage, died April 22. He was 89.
Humphries passed in a Sydney hospital following complications with hip surgery, his family announced in a statement.
“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” the family said. “With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.”
Humphries reportedly fell in February and had a hip replacement. In March, the entertainer had hip surgery, but earlier this week, he returned to the hospital due to complications and later died, according to Sydney Morning Herald.

Barry Humphries, the Australian entertainer whose gladioli-waving alter ego Dame Edna charmed and roasted celebrities, all with a Cheshire grin, outrageous eyewear, a “Hello, Possums!” greeting and a flurry of caustic wit, died Saturday. He was 89.
Humphries died at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney of complications from hip surgery, his family announced.
“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” they said. “With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.”
He portrayed Dame Edna Everage — whom he called a “gauche, garrulous Melbourne housewife with a very shrill voice who was obsessed with interior decoration” — for more than six decades across cabarets, clubs, stage and screen as one of the world’s oldest continual comic creations.

ABC‘s Will Trent isn’t afraid to shy away from tough subjects. And the latest challenging storyline revolves around Angie Polaski coming face-to-face with her past demons. French Stewart first appeared as Lenny Broussard, Angie’s former foster parent, in Will Trent Season 1 Episode 9. And it looks like he’s here to stay for a while.

So the state put Angie into foster care, where the horrors only continued.

Wall Street treated Bob Iger’s return to Disney like sweet candy and gobbled up shares. Now the sugar rush has worn off.
Iger’s promises to offer up creative freedom while also cutting costs and leaning into IP are already being tested in a wary market that’s watching the box office and other metrics closely. The pressure for financial discipline could prove a tough test for his transitional tenure.
The latest Marvel film’s underperformance is just one striking example of the obstacles in Iger’s way. With an end-of-weekend-three total of $187 million domestically and $420 million worldwide, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is on track to earn less in North America than “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and less worldwide than either previous “Ant-Man” film. Disney’s stock price ended Wednesday barely over $99, down from $117 a month ago after a confident performance by Iger on an earnings call.

Combined with his nomination this year as part of the show’s ensemble, it marks Carrigan’s fourth career nomination at SAG.

It’s nearly impossible to become a household name faster than Haley Joel Osment did in the late ’90s. The critical and commercial success of The Sixth Sense catapulted him into the limelight as a child actor worthy of being considered alongside adult peers in major award categories.

When I saw that both the Golden Globes (coming to a TV set or streaming monitor near you next Tuesday) and the Critics Choice Awards had nominated “The Bear” and its lead actor Jeremy Allen White — and in the case of the Critics Choice, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri, too — in Comedy categories, I thought maybe there was something wrong with my laugh detector. So I sat my wife down to watch a couple of episodes of the FX on Hulu freshman series about the drama inside a Chicago sandwich shop so we could find the hilarity together. We emerged pleasantly exhausted from the experience of taking in the show’s excitement, intensity and superb performances — but we didn’t laugh once. In point of fact, we didn’t even crack a smile.

Over the course of 28 years, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best TV Comedy Ensemble has gone to the casts of 17 different series. Eight of them triumphed on their initial outings, while the other nine lost at least once before achieving the honor. Included in the majority are the actors from “Schitt’s Creek” and “Ted Lasso,” who prevailed on their respective second bids in 2021 and 2022. With the 2022 nominees from “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” back in the hunt this year, the chance of this trend continuing is quite strong.
According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions, the cast of “Abbott Elementary” is expected to win the 2023 Best TV Comedy Ensemble prize on their first nomination, but the “Hacks” and “Only Murders” teams are right behind them. In the 28-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, 11 series have each received two Best TV Comedy Actress nominations at once, with the most recent case having involved “Ted Lasso” cast mates Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham. The category outpaces most of the guild’s other five individual TV ones in that regard, but remains the only one in which no costar trios have ever been simultaneously recognized. That gap could soon be filled, however, by the ladies of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.”
“Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson stars on the ABC series as second grade teacher Janine Teagues and is supported by Sheryl Lee Ralph as veteran educator Barbara Howard and Janelle James as their inept principal, Ava Coleman. We get it: As Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, or Matthew McConaughey told us long ago, there’s zero stigma when movie stars take on a prestige limited series. Still, when a movie star as big as Scarlett Johansson makes her TV debut, this is more than a gig: After the Bob Chapek-era “Black Widow” debacle, it’s a chance for her to create more agency over her career.

Developed by These Pictures, the show gender-flips the book’s protagonist; the 1995 Warner Bros. feature adaptation of “Just Cause” starred Sean Connery. Also in that cast is a 10-year-old,...

We learned back in August that Neve Campbell was set to lead the cast of ABC’s “Avalon,” a new mystery-drama series from David E. Kelley. The project was given a series order by ABC, but Variety reports the surprising news that “Avalon” is no longer moving forward.
