Saturday Night Live was so close to breaking its own Emmy nominations record.
The long-running NBC comedy series scored 21 nominations this morning, just under its own single-year record of 22 nominations in 2017. That too was a season dominated by an election involved Donald Trump. This is a jump on the 15 nominations that it received in 2020, the 18 it scored in 2019, and ties the 21 that it secured in 2018.
It takes the total number of nominations for SNL to 306 with 78 previous wins.
Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong were all nominated for Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series, while Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang were nominated for Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series. Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Alec Baldwin, Dave Chappelle, Daniel Kaluuya and Daniel Levy were all nommed for their guest spots.
In fact, Yang, whose Titanic Iceberg sketch went viral, has become the first featured player to be nominated...

The ever-popular WWE Friday Night SmackDown on Fox took top demo honors this summer evening, checking in at an 0.5 to lead the pack.
Roman Reigns was the attraction, as The Head of the Table brought his family together to reclaim the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. They sealed their vow with a group hug.
At CBS, the series debut of Secret Celebrity Renovation came in at an 0.3 in the same time slot. Nischelle Turner hosts the reality show, which — as the title underlines – gives a celebrity a chance to reward someone from their lives with a home renovation. In the first episode, Whose Line Is It Anyway? regular Wayne Brady helped out his Aunt Lily by renovating her Orlando, Fl. home. It was the night’s most-watched program with 2.84 million viewers.

The variety categories at this year’s Emmys are facing a conundrum. In December, the Television Academy voted to combine Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series into a single category, only to change its mind a couple of months later after facing an outcry from critics who thought that comparing, say, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” with “Saturday Night Live” was a classic case of apples-and-oranges.
The problem is that there were only 14 eligible sketch series last year, which made the category a candidate for elimination under the Academy’s old “rule of 14” — and this year it was even worse, with only nine entries. That’s definitely not enough to warrant a separate category, regardless of how much Lorne Michaels would hate to compete against John Oliver and Stephen Colbert. And it means that under rules that now tie the number of nominees to the number of entries,...

It’s a numbers game with “Saturday Night Live” at the Emmys this year. It’s going for its seventh Best Variety Sketch Series win, which would also be a five-peat, and it would just have to beat one other show to do it because the category will only have two nominees. Still with us here?
Due to the sliding scale, now in its second year, that stipulates the number of nominees be proportional to the number of submissions, Best Variety Sketch Series will only have two nominees as only nine shows were submitted. Any category with eight to 11 submissions will have two nominees. The category had three nominees last year. Both are a dramatic swing from 2016-19 when the category boasted six nominees.
Given its brand name and the fact that it’s the four-time defending champ, “SNL” feels like a shoo-in for one of those slots and likely...

A new lineup of Saturday programming and a surge of post-pandemic spending by Madison Avenue helped the CW boost its volume of advertising commitments in TV’s annual “upfront” market, a sign that advertisers continue to make the medium a central part of their plans even as they are showing new interest in chasing viewers to new streaming venues.
The network, jointly owned by ViacomCBS and AT&T’s WarnerMedia, has wrapped its upfront negotiations, according to a person familiar with the matter, and believes it has obtained a greater volume of advertising for its next programming cycle than it did in 2020. The network expects an increase in the volume of advertising committed to both its linear fall schedule as well as its digital extensions, this person said.

Once one of the biggest nights on television, home of such hits as Golden Girls, Saturday has become a scripted wasteland where cancelled series go to air their final episodes.
The CW may change that. The network recently reached an agreement with its affiliates to take over Saturday primetime starting next fall. Today, the CW unveiled its fall 2021 schedule, with new episodes of Whose Line is It Anyway? and World’s Funniest Animals.
“At this time it’s alternative programming,” the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said during a press call about the fall schedule Tuesday. “When we get to 2022, we will probably look at putting some scripted programming on but we have not fully fleshed that out, we’ve been more focused on 4Q of 21.”

The deal will see Discovery acquire WarnerMedia after the prized entertainment brand is spunoff from AT&T. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is set to run the new combined entity.
Pedowitz also addressed the network’s decision to offer original programming on Saturday nights, adding a two-hour Saturday primetime block to its schedule this fall, programming a full seven nights a week for the first time in its 15-year history.

The youth-skewing network will program the entire week for the first time and is going for a bumper unscripted slate across the weekend as it has originals on Saturday nights for the first time.

After the pandemic forced The CW to hold much of its original programming until midseason and left the fall stacked with mostly acquisitions and imports, the youngest-skewing broadcast network is coming back strong in the 2021-2022 season with a lineup that shakes up every single night of the week except one. Oh, and as TheWrap previously reported, The CW also has one more night of programming this fall, with the addition of Saturday to the mix.

Just two days away from its annual PPV Royal Rumble, Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown teased that event with some special features, highlighted by a 10-man tag team event.
That and the return of Braun Strowman and the ongoing war of words between Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens led to an 0.6 for the two-hour show, which topped the night’s demo wars.
Close behind was a repeat of ABC’s Shark Tank, which has been the field leader for several weeks, and a new episode of NBC’s The Blacklist. The latter was just renewed for a ninth season.
CBS had a night of reruns on its crime drama lineup, but Blue Bloods managed the night’s largest total audience with 4.32 million viewers.
In the Friday newsmag faceoffs, NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s 20/20 both had an 0.4, with Dateline’s “killer grandma” feature boasting the larger audience of the two.

A pattern is developing on Friday nights in the television ratings. ABC’s Shark Tank once again topped the evening’s demos, scoring an 0.7 to win the night’s honors.
Also, once again, the WWE Friday Night SmackDown came in second, drawing to an 0.6 on Fox, tying with the 0.6 of Magnum P.I. for the place position.
And finally, once again, the CBS crime drama lineup drew the night’s total largest audiences, with a new Blue Bloods at 6.58 million viewers the overall winner.
The Shark Tank score proved a strong lead-in for ABC’s 20/20, which had an 0.5 for its look at a New England murder. That nipped newsmag competitor NBC’s Dateline, which came in at an 0.4 for its examination of a California murder.

The Sharks were swarming on ABC this Friday, as the business ventures of Shark Tank topped the individual show demo wars with an 0.8 to win the night. Sharks Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Daymond John and Barbara Corcoran heard a pitch from a former WNBA player on a sports drink as one highlight.
But the CBS crime drama lineup scored the night’s largest audiences, with MacGyver (0.5), Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods (both an 0.6) all had new shows, drawing a crowd and also doing well in demos.
At Fox, the WWE Friday Night SmackDown scored an 0.5, as the show builds toward the Royal Rumble in a few weeks.
In newsmags, ABC’s 20/20 had an 0.6, easily beating NBC’s Dateline, which had a repeat of Mr. Mayor as its lead-in.
The CW saw a new Whose Line Is It Anyway? come in at an 0.1 to start its night.

The 25th season of The Bachelor kicked off Monday and, as expected, topped the ratings heap in broadcast primetime. The ABC reality competition delivered a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic while 5 million viewers tuned in to watch a group of women make a memorable — and sometimes desperate — first impression on Matt James, the first Black bachelor in the franchise’s history.
The Bachelor lead into the debut of the Craig Ferguson-hosted trivia game show The Hustler. The duo gave ABC the overall win in the demo in Nielsen Live+Same Day fast nationals.
CBS meanwhile crushed the competition in viewers with the return of its Monday night lineup, which all hit season-best viewer numbers. The Neighborhood ticked up from its last original and was the night’s most-watched broadcast. Everything else was also was up with Bob Hearts Abishola (0.6, 5.41M), All Rise (0.5, 4.62M) and Bull (0.5, 5.50M).

As 2020 winds down, the TV landscape continues to take a bit of a breather with most of the networks airing repeats. But there is some action during the downtime: ABC wrapped its season of Monday Night Football with a bang last night, delivering a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.05 million viewers who watched the Buffalo Bills eviscerate the New England Patriots 38-9 in a game simulcast on ESPN. Its early Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers were even in the demo and up in viewers compared with ABC-espn’s last Mnf game. Expect an adjustment in the final numbers later today.

CBS saw the return of its Monday primetime lineup with the Season 3 premiere of The Neighborhood leading the pack. The timely Black Lives Matter-themed episode set the pace for the night with a 0.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.02 million viewers, the latter up 6% over last season’s premiere.
The shutdown-delayed sophomore season debuts of Bob Hearts Abishola, on par with last season’s average, and All Rise (0.6, 4.62M), steady in the demo but matching audience lows, also returned for the network, followed by Bull (0.5, 4.91M) and its musical Season 5 premiere which hit series lows.
The final numbers for CBS’ season premieres are likely to be adjusted due to local NFL preemptions.
On NBC, The Voice continues its socially distanced season but was slightly out of tune last night, stumbling two tenths in the demo and off in viewers. Meanwhile, Weakest Link managed to hang on to last week’s numbers.

NBC’s The Voice led Monday’s broadcast ratings in primetime, delivering a 1.0 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.45 million viewers. The reality singing competition held steady with last week while adding to its audience. Following the two-hour Voice, NBC warmed us up for Election Day with an SNL election special.
ABC debuted the fourth season of The Good Doctor, which scrubbed in down compared with its Season 3 average, hitting a series low for its return, the first of a two-parter that faces Covid-19 head-on. Reality TV competitions led the way Monday in primetime with NBC’s The Voice, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and CBS’ Big Brother tying for the top spot in the adults 18-49 demographic in early Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers. Of the three, The Voice was the only one that saw a stumble, dipping two tenths from last week’s premiere but delivering a night-leading 7.85 million viewers. NBC’s Weakest Link (0.6, 3.73M) followed the two-hour program and also took a two-tenths dive.
With adjustments pending due to an NFL preemption, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars held steady with its Halloween-themed episode. The two-hour show was followed by Emergency Call, which ticked up in the demo.
NBC and ABC tied for the overall win on the night in the demo, with the former No. 1 in viewers.

NBC launched the 19th season of The Voice on Monday, and though it stumbled in numbers compared with last fall’s debut, its 1.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.96 million viewers both topped the night in primetime in Nielsen Live+7 data.
The reality singing competition’s debut, which did rise from its previous season finale numbers in May, was off two tenths from its previous cycle’s premiere episode in February, and down five tenths from its fall 2019 debut. Last night, The Voice was followed by a fresh episode of Weakest Link (0.8, 4.31M), which jumped two tenths in the demo.
ABC’s Dancing With the Stars meanwhile ticked up a tenth in the demo week over week. The network’s Emergency Call was also up. Both shows’ numbers will likely be adjusted in finals due to an NFL preemption in local markets.

“Dancing With the Stars” tripped up a little in routine on Monday night, as a rescheduled NFL game dominated the ratings for CBS.
The ABC dance show ticked down to a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49 and just over 6 million total viewers. That represents an 18% dip from last week in the former metric, and a season low in both overall. Despite its weaker lead-in, Luke Wilson unscripted series “Emergency Call” managed to retain 100% of its premiere rating, delivering a 0.6 and 3.5 million viewers.
The mouth-watering NFL clash between the New England and the Kansas City Chiefs was supposed to take place on Sunday, but the game was postponed to last night due to New England quarterback Cam Newton testing positive for Covid-19. An averaged of around 12.5 million viewers tuned in to the game on CBS, and a 3.5 averaged ratings was easily enough to carry the night for the network. “Big Brother” scored...
