Among the many things a great chef has to master is learning to keep multiple pots and pans going simultaneously, while timing each ingredient exactly in order for a dish to come out perfectly cooked. In some ways, Jon Favreau is like a great chef, balancing his career as a writer, director, and actor. The director is less than 50 days from the release of his live-action remake of ‘The Lion King,’ appeared on-screen in both “Avengers: Endgame” and the upcoming “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but he still found time to squeeze in a whole other venture – a new cooking series called “The Chef Show.”
“It took three years,” Favreau told Variety, in a sit-down before announcing the series at Netflix’s Food Day Fysee event. “We have been working on this longer than ‘Lion King.’”

One of the toughest things to pull off in a visual/aural medium is communicating other senses, especially when it comes to food. You can look at a picture of a hamburger and know it’s a hamburger, but it takes a truly talented photographer to capture all the qualities that make a hamburger delicious without involving smell, taste, or touch.
However, across both the scripted and unscripted realms in television, a number of series have tackled that challenge — often surprisingly well! But it’s hardly a surprise as to why so many shows focus on our obsession with the culinary arts: Of all the human experiences you can portray on screen, eating is easily the least controversial and the most universal. And sometimes it can make for truly delicious TV.

Netflix has released the trailer for season 2 of its original animated series “F Is for Family.” Co-created by comedian Bill Burr and Michael Price, the series follows the Murphy family back to the 1970s, “when kids roamed wild, beer flowed freely and nothing came between a man and his TV.”

Aarp Studio’s ‘Dinner with Don’ is about to introduce a new generation to a comedy legend.Credit: ABC-tv
A legend died last week, but his blistering wit will endure. Don Rickles passed last Thursday as a result of kidney failure. Rickles was 90. Rickles’ career spanned over 60 years. Though, even toward the end of his life, he showed no signs of stopping.
The American Association of Retired Persons (Aarp) Studios — yes that Aarp now has a studio — announced that it would honor Rickles by going ahead with the release of his interview series Dinner with Don. It seems fitting that Rickles’ last project was an interview show as he got his big break on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Before his death, Rickles filmed 1o episodes of his interview series. Aarp Studios released the trailer for Rickles’ show following the comedian’s death. You can view the trailer here.

Dan Harmon began playing Dungeons & Dragons with his pals as a kid. Now he’s turned a life-long affinity for role-playing games into a full-fledged TV show.
“HarmonQuest,” which premieres July 14 on Seeso, features Harmon and pals on stage as they improvise through the Pathfinder Roleplaying World, with much of their interaction and gameplay then set to animation.
Harmon told IndieWire that he was inspired by HBO’s “The Ricky Gervais Show,” which took Gervais’ podcast with Karl Pilkington and animated their conversations. “I was endlessly entertained by impromptu audio coupled with animation, with the animation bringing what was being said to life, especially when what was being said was absurd,” Harmon said.
“In TV or all things creative, it’s your job to follow your own laughter,” he added. “When I was watching that show I’d be laughing so hard my sides would hurt, which is a rare thing.

One of the big questions in the run-up to The Force Awakens (other than "When Can I See It?") centers on Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, who is back for the Star Wars sequel, but not pictured in any of the film's promotional materials. This has led, among other spectulation, to a whole fan theory built around the idea that Luke is evil now, an idea Hamill may have pitched to Abrams himself in a 2005 Dinner for Five episode. Anyway, in a recent interview with Empire (via Slashfilm) it seems that Hamill may have slipped a few hints past Abrams's Trade Federation-like embargo on spoilers. “There are lots of surprises in this movie. You’re going to love it,” Hamill said, which, so far, is the company line, but then, while elaborating on his memory of shooting the film, he revealed he had some time to think on set: “It...

We know what Han Solo's up to in The Force Awakens: He's hanging out in the Millennium Falcon and talking about the Force. And we know what Princess Leia's up to, too, at least a little bit: She's wearing a vest and hugging Han! But what about Luke? He's absent from the film's poster, and has only made a brief faceless appearance in one of the film's trailers. Could this be because, in the 30 years since Return of the Jedi, Luke has turned to the Dark Side? The theory's been battered around the internet almost since Force Awakens was announced, and it got even more digital traction when footage emerged of Mark Hamill talking about a potential Luke heel-turn in 2005 on a Dinner for Five panel that just so happened to include none other than J.J. Abrams. What's the evidence supporting such a theory? As usual with these kind...

Mark Hamill's absence from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers has left many fans scratching their heads - and others furiously speculating that he's hiding in the shadows after succumbing to the Dark Side.
Adding fuel to the Evil Luke fire is a resurfaced video from a 2005 episode of movie chatshow Dinner for Five.
Hamill, sitting with his future Star Wars director Jj Abrams, revealed that he originally pitched George Lucas the idea of Luke going bad for Return of the Jedi, only to have it shot down.
"As an actor that would be more fun to play," Hamill said of his potential character switch.
"I just thought that's the way it was going from when we finished [Empire Strikes Back] ... I'll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my crosshairs, and I'll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess...

It’s been a big week for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with both the reveal of the poster and the film’s final trailer being released. However, in true J.J. Abrams fashion we seem to now have more questions than answers. One that is consuming many fans is, where is Luke Skywalker? We know Mark Hamill is in the movie but he’s not on the poster, nor is he visible in the trailer. This has led some to speculate that the reason he's not around is because even seeing him could be a spoiler in itself. Does...does that mean he goes bad? If that turns out to be the case then there’s only one person to blame, Mark Hamill himself. Back in the early 2000’s Jon Favreau hosted a show on IFC called Dinner For Five in which ...

Months after a careful analysis of the show's Daredevil episode revealed the exact moment Jennifer Garner fell in love with Ben Affleck comes news of a 2005 episode of the show that may have influenced one of the most buzzworthy fan theories about The Force Awakens: the rumor that Luke Skywalker is being held out of the film's trailers because he is eeeeeevvvvviiiiillllll now. As it turns out, Mark Hamill himself pitched this very idea on Dinner for Five a decade ago, on a panel that included none other than future Star Wars director J.J. Abrams. This post originally ran in October 2014. We are rerunning it because, as things end, it's good to remember where they started. I remember the moment in April 2005 when I heard that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were getting married. I was in college at the time and I didn’t really follow gossip news, so I didn’t even know they had started dating. But still, there, burned in my brain, is the memory of me seeing the news and thinking, Of course. See, I had seen the episode of Dinner for Five (Jon Favreau's short-lived IFC show where he had actors and directors eat dinner together) that they appeared on together, along with their Daredevil cast members, and I had observed Jennifer Garner fall madly in love with Ben Affleck. The episode aired in January 2003, which means Ben was still dating Jennifer Lopez (Lopez and Affleck had gotten...

Garner admittedly took some time out for the sake of their three kids, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, while Ben was on set.
"I've been home for a long time," Garner recently said at a press event to promote her new movie Danny Collins, via Us Weekly. "It's my turn and I'm going to go to work this spring. I think I'll work the spring and summer, maybe the fall too, as long as some of it's at home. I don't think my deals are done yet so I can't say, but yeah, I'm about to go to work."

Two years before they were married, Jen Garner is clearly smitten on Ben Affleck in this 2003 clip.

Director Jon Favreau recently took part in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session to talk about all the incredible things he has done in his career. I'm a huge fan of Favreau, and I have been since I saw Swingers. It's pretty awesome to see how far he's come in his career, and there's no doubt that he worked his ass off to get to the place where he's at.

Back in the day (mostly) before he was a big time director, Jon Favreau hosted a show on IFC called Dinner for Five. It was a pretty simple concept: Favreau and four guests — a mix of actors, writers, directors, and comedians — would eat dinner and shoot the bull, and then they would cut the best bits into a 30 minute episode. It was great. The casual atmosphere made everyone more candid and relaxed than they might be on a traditional talk show, plus they might be drunk. Dinner for Five is how I know that Frank Darabont lived above Tom Cruise’s garage to write Mission Impossible 3, and he loved it. (Darabont wrote the first draft. He's not credited, but in the same episode he talks about how much he hates the WGA's rules for writing credits.) Before his reinvention as a blockbuster director, Jon Favreau hosted a half-hour show for IFC called “Dinner For Five” that found the multi-hyphenate engaged in conversation with four other guests from the film industry over dinner. Though borne of a simple premise, the show was often illuminating, funny and, most of all, humanizing, especially when larger stars or industry legends were involved. The sole digression from the title-and-premise was a one-on-one conversation with Favreau’s future “The Wolf Of Wall Street” director Martin Scorsese that’s been making the rounds online. Airing during the third season in 2004, the episode with Scorsese is, in terms of the actual staging of the director and host, more in-line with other television interviews but Favreau’s cool approach – and obvious admiration for Scorsese – meshes exceptionally well with the legendary director who, as always, is a game interview subject. One of the better exchanges in the episode concerns Scorsese’s.

Favreau's full 30-minute conversation with Scorsese, from 2004, is below as well. The man has good taste -- and for that matter, so does Jon Favreau. Scorsese loves Hitch's unsung 1956 noir "The Wrong Man," starring Henry Fonda, which he says he screened for writer Paul Schrader when they were working on their masterful "Taxi Driver," another film with noirish elements about man's evolution from innocence to criminality. As much as we'd like to forget that particular sequel confection, all the essential ingredients of it were solid (except perhaps the gamey taste of Mickey Rourke), so it makes our mouth water to learn via The Hollywood Reporter that the delectable Scarlett Johansson will be assembling with Avenger Robert Downey Jr. for star/director Jon Favreau's "Chef."
The indie comedy, which is currently being sold at Cannes based on the aroma of its cast, will also feature Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale. The plot revolves around Favreau's chef Carl Casper who loses his restaurant gig and cooks up a food truck business in order to simultaneously reawaken the artist within and reconcile with his family.

Jon Favreau seems to be the type of guy who’s pretty into food. No, that wasn’t a fat joke—he who lives in glass houses and whatnot—it’s just an observation coming after he hosted a talk show called Dinner For Five that was based on a crew of interesting people gathering around a table full of food, and now he’s reportedly taking a break from making wildly profitable (when not involving cowboys *and* aliens) blockbuster tentpole pictures in order to put together a little independent project that will see him doing a lot of cooking. The project, according to a scoop that came out of Variety, will see Favreau writing, directing, and starring in a film called Chef, which is said to be a comedy about an emotional chef who runs a Los Angeles-based restaurant. His early career behind the camera launched with Made (he also wrote Swingers), and now he's getting back to those roots with a film called Chef, described as "a character study" that he wrote and will also star in alongside Sofia Vergara, with Bobby Cannavale (Win Win) and John Leguizamo close to landing roles as well. The film would follow Favreau as an emotional chef running a Los Angeles-based restaurant. Sounds like a solid entertaining role for Favreau. Favreau is no stranger to mixing his love of food and Hollywood since he produced the series "Dinner for Five" which featured tons of stars sitting down for a meal and conversation about life, the film industry and more (you can watch all the episodes right here...

Over the last year, MTV and Nickelodeon have tapped into viewers' nostalgia by resurrecting a few of their long-gone but still-beloved series for special runs to much fan fervor.
Nickelodeon kicked off the trend last March with the invention of their midnight to 2 a.m. '90s Are All That block, featuring reruns of Rugrats, Kenan & Kel, Pete & Pete, The Amanda Show, All That, and Clarissa Explains It All.

MTV followed suit this past summer by rerunning Laguna Beach from the beginning, which led into The Hills and then Daria, once Brody's backdrop was wheeled off.
The one-time music video channel also brought back four classic seasons of The Real World this past weekend as a promotional tool to help launch season 28, which takes place in Portland and premieres this Wednesday.

Now we normally don't talk about TV series here at FirstShowing since movies on the big screen are our first priority. But there are some TV shows that just fit right in our wheelhouse. "Inside the Actors Studio" and others dive into films from an angle that just hits the spot for cinephiles. One such series is Jon Favreau's IFC series Dinner for Five. The unscripted series features four actors, directors or producers sitting down for a meal with Favreau and having candid discussions about the entertainment industry including personal stories, insights into the business side of film and TV, and some truly great conversations. More below! Here's one of my favorite episodes with Eddie Izzard, Will Ferrell, Louis C.K. and Illeana Douglas: The list of guests Favreau had on the show over five seasons is extremely impressive and makes for some great television. Big names behind the camera like J.J. Abrams,...

Good news for anyone who loves the ’90s and lives within a reasonable distance of Austin, the Portland of the Southwest: The year-old Austin Television Festival has announced that in 2013, its second annual event will feature cast (and crew!) reunions of gone-but-not-forgotten favorites including Boy Meets World, Friday Night Lights, My S0-Called Life, Party of Five, and American Dreams, a.k.a. That Show About The ’60s That Wasn’t Mad Men. All individual participants in these reunions have not yet been revealed, but chances are good that Scott Wolf, at least — who attended the fest in its inaugural...

Jon Favreau may be coming to the small screen with a spec script at CBS. Deadline repots that the Iron Man director is in negotiations for a half-hour comedy called Tweaked. Favreau penned the script and is set to direct and executive produce the project. The show will reportedly receive a pilot order from CBS and get laid off at sibling CBS TV Studios.
The story follows the "life and dating among single parents in Santa Monica." Tweaked will be Favreau's first time writing a TV series. He previously directed and executive produced the pilot for ABC’s comedy In Case Of Emergency. Favreau also created, executive produced and hosted the IFC talk show Dinner For Five.He is currently working on the script and is attached to direct the 2013 Disney tentpole Magic Kingdom.
Favreau is not the only film director taking a stab at TV. It was recently reported that the Coen Bros.

Exclusive: Writer-director-actor Jon Favreau is venturing into scripted series with Tweaked, a half-hour spec script that has landed at CBS. The network is in early negotiations for the single-camera project, which Iron Man director Favreau wrote and is set to direct and executive produce. When all is said and done, I hear Tweaked is expected to receive a pilot order from CBS and get laid off at sibling CBS TV Studios. Favreau has been working for a while on the script, which chronicles life and dating among single parents in Santa Monica. It marks his first foray into TV series writing. On TV, Favreau previously directed and executive produced the pilot for ABC’s well-received but short-lived single-camera comedy series In Case Of Emergency. He also created, executive produced and hosted the IFC talk show Dinner For Five. On the feature side, CAA-repped Favreau, who rose to prominence with the 1996 indie Swingers,...

What's a "SMalk" show? I don't know, but I don't know what a "SModcast" is either. Regardless, movie director and some time indie darling Kevin Smith is going to try his hand at hosting a half-hour television talk show, tentatively titled (the) Kevin Smith Project. Kevin Smith and "his people"* are prepping the pilot, searching for both their first guests and their studio audience. Based on the description Vulture provides, the show doesn't sound like it will be all that inventive from a format perspective, but Smith's witty, acerbic persona and his potential for controversy (and the caliber of guests he will likely be able to get) are the real draws here.
"The idea is a Regis and Kelly talk show at the opposite end of the day for the opposite kind of audience -- the 12-34 demo. Kevin and his co-host will talk water-cooler topics at the top of the show,...

Unfortunately I missed this awesome one-hour Visionaries panel at Comic-Con this year. The panel featured a discussion between Guillermo Del Toro and Jon Favreau. Thanks to /Film we have the entire conversation, which you can read below.
Question: How are you guys doing?
Guillermo Del Toro: Excrement!
[Everyone Laughs]
Question: How was the flight?
Guillermo Del Toro: It was painful, but I’m here. As I said earlier having a bulging… Having anything bulging after 40 is a hint of death.
Jon Favreau: I got an email from Guillermo a few days ago saying, “I don’t know if I’m going to be able to make it, I’m in pain.” And I said, “Oh my God,” the whole… part of the fun of being here and doing this is to be sitting next to this guy, because he has been an inspiration and a mentor and a friend...

We're big fans of the way Universal decided to package the Epk interviews for Cowboys & Aliens, because they've deviated from the usual format of cast members talking about general behind-the-scenes moments to no one in particular and re-formatted it so director Jon Favreau was asking the questions to cast members in an intimate, Dinner for Five-ish setting. Like the TV series, each interview is separated into different segments that come with titles tied to the theme of that particular part of the conversation. Previously we posted Favreau's interviews with Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and now it's Olivia Wilde's turn to get in on the action. God bless Jon Favreau! The Cowboys & Aliens director has resurrected the awesome interview style he perfected on Dinner for Five for a series of YouTube sit-downs with the cast and production team behind the genre-bending future blockbuster. Favreau has already gotten some good quotes from Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, but what does he coax out of Cowboys co-star Olivia Wilde? Try a harrowing story about the time she fell off a horse during shooting and was saved from being trampled by Walton Goggins. Click through to watch.

In anticipation of the July 29th release of Cowboys & Aliens, Universal is doing something pretty cool with the way they're marketing the movie by staging interviews with cast and filmmakers, hosted by director Jon Favreau. The nice thing about having Favreau as a director is that he's a one-man shop: He acts, directs, writes and plays a great host (fans of Dinner for Five already know this). Having him interview stars like Harrison Ford and producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard adds a bit more weight to each discussion because Favreau directed the film and knows all the ins and outs of the production. We imagine Universal will launch more of these as we inch closer to release, but you can scope out two of the interviews -- one with Ford, and one...

For his latest film Cowboys and Aliens, director Jon Favreau decided to conduct his own interviews with his cast and crew. Favreau is no stranger to interviewing celebreties. He was once the host of Dinner for Five, a television program in which he would have a revolving guest list of celebrities eat, drink and talk about life on and off the set, and swap stories about projects past and present. The show featured a spontaneous, open forum for people in the entertainment community who would meet at a different restaurant each time. The interviews below have somewhat the same vibe, minus the fine wine and dining, but it’s a lot of fun to sit back and watch industry people, just be themselves. Below you can watch his interview with producers Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer as well as the interview he conducted with Harrison Ford. Enjoy!

Harrison Ford is not known for giving interviews, much less being remarkably candid in them, though, there's always a bit of a curmudgeonly Han Solo charm when he does sit down and have a chat. Jon Favreau, before he was a blockbuster director, but after he was a respected, fairly unknown actor, hosted an interview/chat show on IFC called "Dinner For Five," and it was fascinating for being able to watch various levels of celebrity simply talk to each other about their craft, choices, and careers. So, really, it should come as no surprise that Favreau was a) able to convince Ford to be interviewed by him about their upcoming movie, and b) that when they did, it would be one of the most entertaining and enlightening 15-20 minute conversations since the My Dinner with Abed episode of "Community."
The conversation is broken up into seven pieces, each about three minutes in length,...

Harrison Ford has the reputation of being a somewhat prickly interviewee who is unafraid of letting people know if he doesn't think much of their line of questioning. So what better way to avoid the star acting up in public than to have him interviewed by his most recent boss?
The Huffington Post has begun running "The Cowboys & Aliens Interviews," a series of talks that Jon Favreau has had with many of the talented folks involved with the upcoming flick. Ford is the first subject, but Favreau namedrops Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Brian Grazer and Daniel Craig for future installments. For those familiar, Favreau compares the tone and style to his IFC television show Dinner for Five and the comparison seems to be pretty apt.
While the first video is largely hat-centric, it's great seeing the rapport between Favreau and Ford, and the videos quickly become more involved and compelling.

Actor and director Jon Favreau got his start on the indie comedy Swingers with Vince Vaughn but he continued to build his reputation as a go-to filmmaker for blockbusters with the sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens. Favreau revisited his talk show habits from the IFC show Dinner For Five by interviewing his Cowboys & Aliens star Harrison Ford about his role as Colonel Dolarhyde as well as his work in past blockbusters like the Star Wars Trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark. According to EW, Favreau also explained to Ford why he decided to shoot Cowboys & Aliens in 2-D and stay off the 3-D bandwagon.

Anyone who watched Jon Favreau’s old IFC show Dinner For Five knows that the actor-turned-screenwriter-turned-blockbuster-director is also a deft interviewer of his famous colleagues and friends. That is certainly the case when Favreau sat down to talk with one of the stars of his latest film, Cowboys & Aliens, Harrison Ford. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones legend is a notoriously tricky interview, but Favreau coaxes some choice moments from his star, including why Ford was not initially keen to sign on for the western sci-fi, what kind of movie might have happened if Ford and costar Daniel Craig had...

As you might remember Jon Favreau had a great show that he hosted called Dinner For Five which I miss watching. Favreau taps back into that mind set and has created a video interview series called the Cowboys & Aliens Interviews. The first interview he conducted was with Harrison Ford. Favreau explained that the interviews resulted in "conversations that not only included the process of making Cowboys and Aliens, but also segued into larger conversations about the rich experiences these individuals have had in their careers." So they talk bout everything from Star Wars to Indiana Jones. There is a ton of great stuff here to listen to and I highly suggest you do. This is a fantastic Interview that includes stuff that you won't be expecting. Enjoy!
