Not Terrific But Better Than Most of Season 5
Jan borrows Dot's blonde wig to spice up her sex life; Amy keeps getting stiffed by an elderly customer; when their employee parking privileges are revoked, Nancy tries to make amends by putting a TV set in the lounge.
Once again, we have three good ideas spread too thin, but at this point I've given up. This show will never be another GOLDEN GIRLS, although you can definitely see the resemblance if you only watch Season 1.
Jan uses Dot's Debbie Harry-looking blonde wig so she and Richie can play Stranger-in-the-Bedroom but none of the action even takes place at their house. All we know is that turnabout is fair play so Jan makes Richie dress up like a construction worker. She also says she feels like "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice with Richie and I playing all the parts". Another great idea with potential for at least some funny sight gags that goes nowhere.
Nedra Volz plays Amy's sneaky customer and again, this story could have been stretched out more. Especially since we see the religious Amy going against policy and doing wrong by ripping up dinner checks. This moral dilemma wasn't even touched on here.
Sonny plays the CAGNEY & LACEY theme on the piano. Back in Season 3, he stated he wasn't a fan of either them or KATE & ALLIE. Later, he refers to '60s folk singer Donovan as a "psychedelic elf".
It's a case of one step forward and two steps back in regard to Nancy's wardrobe, I guess. It had actually been quite flattering since she and Howard tied the knot, but here she wears a hideous green old-fashioned ballgown that makes her look like the wicked stepmother from Cinderella.
There is some amusing name-dropping in the scenes where the girls keep sneaking into the lounge to watch the fictional trashy '80s miniseries.
