Episode 80 begins with a critically-injured Danny in the hospital,the bullet having struck both kidneys; the heartsick Gwen feels responsible for the shooting,but Jodie offers her sage advice("he got to save somebody that he loved").Burt announces that he's going to make Tibbs pay for his crimes,and Chuck shows up looking for Bob(he was in the mens room).the doctor(Richard McKenzie,Burt's doctor from three prior entries)declares that the kidney donor must be a blood relative.Chester is unable to make love to his fiancée Annie,calling her "Jess" more than once by accident; he claims he's old enough to be her older brother,but she informs him that age doesn't matter because they're on "the same wavelength." Jessica unsuccessfully tries to seduce El,who insists that they can only do it after they are married; the newly liberated Jessica refuses to tie herself down to a marriage contract.Danny's doctor(Richard McKenzie,Burt's doctor from three prior entries)declares that he needs a blood donor to offer up a kidney for Danny; Mary is ineligible so Jodie volunteers,until she shares a secret with him(they do not have the same father).This cliffhanger was broadcast on January 28,1981,the last on Wednesday night at 9:30PM.The show would resume on Monday nights at 10:00PM,with five final broadcasts in a one hour time slot,beginning March 9(obviously,the audience had a long wait to learn who Danny's father was).
