Mark Wahlberg has led one too many daunting projects that are spread across multiple genres, with video game-based action pieces being among them as well.
Like his 2008 action/crime from Irish director John Moore, Max Payne, for one to count, which may have received lukewarm reviews but was quite a successful piece when it comes to its box office scores, especially in the US.

Needless to say, Wahlberg performed epically in the movie; to the point where, perhaps, no one could play the character in live-action better. That said, even Moore thought through this very perspective before making the movie.

Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). Exclusive: Chernin Entertainment has launched development on Tomato Can, a new boxing film scripted by Michael Brandt (3:10 to Yuma), from his and Jamie Foxx’s original idea.

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire easily took the top spot this weekend at the box office, posting a much stronger-than-expected $31.7 million second weekend. We predicted about $25 million, so this is a significantly more extensive haul than expected for the MonsterVerse sequel, with it falling about 60% in week 2. That’s decent for a tentpole blockbuster like this. Everyone assumed the movie would be front-loaded, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, with it now on its way to at least a $200 million domestic haul – maybe more.
However, Godzilla and Kong’s good fortune at the multiplex spelled doom for two new genre titles – Monkey Man and The First Omen, both of which were gunning for some of that movie’s audience. Of the two, Monkey Man’s $10.1 million haul isn’t half bad if you consider that Universal picked it up for only about $10 million after Netflix opted to dump it.

In its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros.’ product, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, brought in $80.0 million, handily claiming the number one spot of this weekend’s top ten. In a distant second place was last weekend’s top film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire with $15.7 million in its second weekend of release. This gives the Sony Pictures Releasing film an overall total of $73.4 million. Also dropping a spot this weekend was Dune: Part Two which landed in third place with $11.1 million over the last three days. This gives the Warner Bros. film a five-week tally of $252.4 million. Finishing in fourth place was Kung Fu Panda 4 which brought in $10.2 million over the weekend despite losing a spot in the top ten since last weekend.

Easter Weekend proved to be absolutely gigantic for WB and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, with the fifth film in the franchise (which we ranked here), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, grossing a massive $80 million domestically. While it was no doubt propelled by the holiday weekend (tomorrow’s grosses should be huge), it can’t be denied that the movie opened way beyond even the most optimistic expectations. Industry estimates (ours included) expected the film to open in the $50 million-ish range, but despite mixed reviews, the movie grossed about $30 million more than anyone expected.
While this is only the second largest MonsterVerse opening weekend (Godzilla made $93 million in 2014), this is considered a massive win for Warner Bros. Sony had the big win at the box office over the weekend, with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" taking the top spot on the charts, but additional context puts some qualifiers around that movie's win, since a $45 million opening weekend haul is a mixed bag for a film with a $100 million budget. While ghosts were being busted, though, two smaller horror movies had downright incredible weekends for their respective distributors. Neon's "Immaculate" and IFC's "Late Night with the Devil," bolstered by very strong buzz, had record-setting debuts for both labels. Put simply, horror stays winning.

Funny, this sure doesn’t look like a sequel problem: “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (Sony) took #1 with an on-target $45 million weekend. Although that number was below recent openings for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) and “Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal), all exceeded the openings of their immediate franchise predecessors.
“Frozen Empire” achieved this without the advantages of “Dune” and “Kung Fu Panda” (hunger for a fresh family title) — and with potential pitfalls like weak reviews and a so-so B+ Cinemascore (down from A- for “Afterlife” in 2021).
It suggests a positive result for the $100 million-budgeted fantasy comedy, a good sign in a year when most of the biggest new films will be similarly unoriginal. The three sequels grossed $80 million of the $105 million weekend.

After posting Friday numbers that had the industry thinking that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire would fall short of Afterlife’s $44 million opening, the sequel rallied to a so-so $45.2 million 3-day opening. While that’s certainly good news as far as bragging rights go (and above the $40 million we had it pegged at), for a movie that cost upwards of $100 million to make (and God knows how much more to market), this opening can’t be considered more than a middling success. When you consider inflation and the fact that Afterlife opened during the pandemic, it can’t be denied that the Frozen Empire audience has shrunk. The B CinemaScore cited by Deadline is problematic, as it doesn’t bode well for the film having much in the way of legs, especially with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opening next (Easter) weekend. That nearly matches the $16.6 million that its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned on its opening day in November 2021. Sony’s sci-fi comedy sequel will easily top domestic charts, though its work isn’t done yet considering its $100 million production budget.
That’s an uptick in the price tag from “Afterlife,” which cost $75 million before marketing and distribution. That franchise revival nearly tripled its $44 million domestic opening weekend, playing well through the Thanksgiving holiday to finish with $129 million and $204 million worldwide. Similarly, “Frozen Empire” could boost its fortunes with Easter at the end of the month.

Mark Wahlberg’s recent based-on-a-true-story movie Arthur the King has been gaining massive fan approval as of late. The film was adapted from the real-life events of Swedish athlete Mikael Lindnord, as he shared in his 2016 memoir Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home. However, the movie’s box office numbers as of this writing aren’t all too great.

For a second consecutive weekend, Kung Fu Panda 4 held onto the number one spot of the box-office weekend, albeit by only $0.9 million.
In its second weekend of release, Kung Fu Panda 4 brought in $30.0 million to stay on top of the top ten. This gives the Universal Pictures product an overall total of $107.7 million. Meanwhile, still relegated to the second spot of the top ten, Dune: Part Two finished just behind that with $29.1 million over the weekend for Warner Brothers. This brings the film’s three-week tally to $205.3 million. Debuting in third place with $7.5 million was the family film Arthur the King starring Mark Wahlberg. The offering from Lionsgate Films took the place of another Lionsgate film as Imaginary was pushed down to fourth where it added $5.6 million, raising its two-week total to $19.1 million. “Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) and “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) came in a close #1-#2 this weekend, with the DreamWorks Animation title edging out Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi adaptation by just under $1 million ($30 million to $29.1 million). The two films, in their second and third weekends respectively, are positioned to exceed their most optimistic pre-release projections.
Going against last year’s trend of disappointing franchise results, the two sequels made up about two thirds of the weekend’s $90 million total. With little help from other new releases, this fell just short of last year’s $92 million. It reduced the year’s deficit to nine percent.
“Dune” joined WB’s “Wonka” as the second film to pass the domestic $200 million total since last July. By next weekend, it will surpass that film’s $218 million gross.

Sunday Am Update: The whole marketplace is coming in lighter than expected at $89M, which is -3% off from the same frame a year ago when Shazam Fury of the Gods did $30M. That’s exactly what the second weekend is for Kung Fu Panda 4 which is a great hold at -48%, rising to $107.7M stateside running total. The early weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like Dune: Part Two wasn’t quite able to take the number one spot from Kung Fu Panda 4 after all. It was very close, with the animated sequel grossing $30 million to Dune’s $29.1 million. It’s so close that I’m not quite willing to admit my prediction that Dune 2 would top Panda was wrong, as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel has been overperforming at Sunday matinees the last few weeks. That said, even if it doesn’t top Panda, it still had a great weekend, with it only dropping a modest 37% in its third week. It also passed the double-century mark, with its final gross at $205 million. Will it cross $300 million? It’s possible, although it will face heavy competition over the next two weeks with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.
