Although the current state of the "Scream" franchise is a giant mess, it's worth remembering that merely a few years ago, its future seemed as bright as ever. 2022's "Scream" was a clear-cut hit at the box office, and it successfully introduced a whole new generation of characters who could be chased around with a knife for many installments to come. "Scream 5" not only did all this while keeping Sidney and Gale in the fold, but it also set the groundwork for the return of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Despite being a fan favorite in "Scream 4," Kirby was tragically left for dead near the end of the movie. How'd she die? Well, she made the tragic mistake of trusting her potential love interest Charlie (Rory Culkin), trying to save him from Ghostface when she should've been saving herself. The good news is that Kirby was soon avenged by her supportive,...

Spoilers: In addition to Scream 2, this article will have spoilers for every other movie in the franchise.
We all know that one of the big draws of the Scream franchise is Ghostface’s identity. But some are a lot harder to figure out who is behind the mask than others. The big surprise in 1996’s original wasn’t that it was Billy or Stu, it was that it was Billy and Stu. And nobody was surprised when freaky Tarantino film student Mickey turned out to be one of the killers in Scream 2. The same could be said of Debbie Salt – after all, why put a prominent actress like Laurie Metcalf in a seemingly thankless role? But Metcalf thinks her Scream 2 reveal still ranks as the best in the franchise’s history.
Speaking with Collider, Laurie Metcalf stated bluntly, “I think in the Scream movies, my character has the best reveal.

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

The lack of Latine representation in film today is disappointing when you consider Latines accounted for 29 percent of moviegoers in the States in 2020. And here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Latines also represent 26 percent of horror movie audiences, compared with 20 percent for other genres, according to a recent survey. Still, there's a marked lack of Latine actors starring in horror films. But Melissa Barrera's career has been challenging that. The horror and suspense queen has starred in several films within the genre in just the past few years, including "Scream," "Scream IV," "Bed Rest," and "Your Monster."
Her latest role is as Joey in "Abigail," a gory vampire film released April 19 about a group of criminals assigned to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crooked millionaire. Like a lot of Barrera's roles, Joey isn't your typical in-your-face Latina character. She's a war veteran with a dream to...

Picking up years later makes us wonder which original stars could stop by for a cameo.

Update: Variety has confirmed that Courteney Cox is in talks to join Neve Campbell in Scream 7. They didn’t mention Patrick Dempsey in their report.
The original article (published March 25th) follows:
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

The "Scream" franchise is still alive and stabbing. The horror series began back in 1996 with Wes Craven's surprise hit, and it's continued on over the decades. Recently, "Scream 7" fell apart after star Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise, and the film's director, Christopher Landon, subsequently walked away from the project. Now, however, it looks like the seventh film in the series is back on track, with franchise creator Kevin Williamson on board to direct and original star Neve Campbell returning.
With "Scream" back in the news, you might be suddenly inspired to revisit the franchise from the beginning. However, you might also be wondering where to start, since the numbering system of the series is a little out of whack.
Don't worry, we're here to help.

After several delays, Scream 7 is moving forward with the return of star Neve Campbell and original writer Kevin Williamson at the helm.
It’s no secret that the next Scream film has been fraught with difficulties, from the firing of Melissa Bererra to Jenna Ortega leaving, followed by director Christopher Landon.
One of the biggest points of contention was the absence of Neve Campbell, who elected not to return for the sixth film due to a pay dispute.
However, whatever problems there were appear to have been resolved, as Campbell posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram account confirming that she is officially back for Scream 7.
Not only that, but Deadline reports that Kevin Williamson – who created the franchise and wrote the screenplays for Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4 – will direct. He has directed just one feature previously, the dark comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle, which was released...

In a dramatic turn of events, Neve Campbell is returning to the world of Scream, the latest twist for a franchise that just several months ago appeared to be on the ropes. Campbell’s return is particularly noteworthy, as she sat out Scream VI over a salary dispute with producer Spyglass.
Campbell announced on Instagram that in addition to her return, franchise godfather Kevin Williamson will direct. Williamson is the creator of the franchise, penning the script to Wes Craven’s original, as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4. Guy Busick, who wrote 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, will take over writing duties from James Vanderbilt, who is busy directing the feature Nuremberg.
The seventh installment of Scream has faced multiple setbacks, including losing star Jenna Ortega, the high profile firing of star Melissa Barrera, and the exit of director Christopher Landon.

Hayden Panettiere of Heroes, Scream 4, and Scream VI shares the screen with Tyler James Williams of Everybody Hates Chris, Abbott Elementary, and The Walking Dead in the thriller Amber Alert. Deadline reports that Lionsgate has acquired the worldwide rights to the film, which flew under the radar as it made its way through production and is now in post-production.
Amber Alert was directed by Kerry Bellessa, who also wrote the screenplay with Joshua Oram. Bellessa’s previous credits include the 2022 horror film Immanence and a 2012 thriller that was also called Amber Alert… so apparently this is a reimagining of Bellessa’s previous film. Zoey Deutch (Not Okay), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) and Ruby Cruz (Bottoms) will star alongside Jaboukie Young-White (Rap Sh!t) and Josh Segarra (Scream IV) in the high-concept romantic comedy The Threesome from Star Thrower Entertainment (King Richard), Filmopoly and Jupiter Peak, which has wrapped production in Arkansas.
Directed by Chad Hartigan (Morris from America) from a script by Ethan Ogilby, The Threesome explores the aftermath of one impulsive, seemingly innocuous decision. When a young man’s perennial crush leads him into an unexpected threesome, he thinks it’s his ultimate fantasy come true. But when the fantasy ends, all three are left with sobering real-world consequences, forcing them to take responsibility for their actions — even if it means compromising the lives they’ve always envisioned.

Actors and married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco previously collaborated on Franco’s feature directorial debut, The Rental, in 2020. Now, the pair are set to co-star in a new horror film, Together.
Variety reports that the horror movie feature hails from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks.
Together will explore “the horror of co-dependency told in a unique way,” though additional plot details remain under wraps at this time. That Brie and Franco are married should add an interesting layer to the co-dependency horror, which might fall under the “unique” descriptor of this horror feature.
Brie appeared in Scream 4 before starring in Franco’s The Rental, which saw two couples celebrating a weekend getaway, only to face grueling terror when an imminent threat forces them to expose well-kept secrets. The couple also appeared together onscreen in ensemble comedy The Little Hours and A24’s The Disaster Artist.

Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

The future of the "Scream" franchise may be looking pretty shaky right about now, but at least the stars of the franchise are there to support one another. "Scream VI" star Melissa Barrera was fired from the upcoming "Scream 7" by Spyglass Entertainment in November 2023 after she posted on social media that Gaza was "being treated like a concentration camp" in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, and that its citizens were being subject to "genocide." Spyglass deemed her comments "antisemitic," citing a zero-tolerance policy on "false references to genocide." The statement was widely challenged at the time, and this week the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take immediate measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
Shortly after the news of Barrera's firing broke, fans learned that "Scream 6" favorite Jenna Ortega would also not be returning for the sequel, though she had dropped out during the summer due to scheduling conflicts.

“Scream” franchise star Hayden Panettiere has spoken out about Melissa Barrera’s firing from the horror film series, calling her controversial exit “very unfair and upsetting.”
Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI,” was fired from the upcoming “Scream 7” after her social media posts about Palestine were deemed antisemitic by Spyglass, the production banner behind the hit horror franchise.
Spyglass said in a statement to Variety at the time: “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
“After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right?” Panettiere said in a recent interview with The Messenger. “It was almost like she just did it earlier than everyone else.

That flick proved that the venerable title wasn't opposed to revamping the narrative.
Armed with a cast headlined by Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega, Scream 6 became the biggest entry yet, leading to a swift announcement for a seventh film in the franchise.
At the time, the series seemed destined to continue with Barrera and Ortega's Sam and Tara Carpenter as the final girls, and we expected that we'd finally meet their mother,...

The entertainment industry is abuzz with the news of Melissa Barrera, famed for her role as Sam Carpenter in the ‘Scream’ franchise, being dropped from the upcoming Scream 7. This decision, according to a statement from Spyglass Media Group and reported by Variety, is due to Barrera’s social media posts related to the Israeli-Hamas conflict, which were seen as crossing the line into hate speech.
Spyglass Media Group took a firm stance, declaring zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate incitement. They specifically pointed to Barrera’s posts as containing problematic references, labeling them as hate speech. This move by Spyglass highlights the sensitive nature of political and social commentary in today’s entertainment landscape.
Christopher Landon, the incoming director for ‘Scream 7,’ shared his reaction to this development in a now-deleted tweet. His message hinted at frustration and a sense of helplessness, suggesting the decision was beyond his control.

‘Scream 4’ actress Hayden Panettiere is revealing what inspired her to go pink. Back in September, the actress, 34, surprised her fans by swapping her trademark blonde hair for a sassy pastel pink hue.
Now, in a new interview for Irk Magazine, Panettiere has explained that suddenly having an open schedule amid the Hollywood strikes presented her with an opportunity to experiment with her look in a way she hadn’t been able to before, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“I’ve had pink hair before, and I loved it! I’ve been begging my team to let me dye it for a while now, and given what I had on my slate with work and photo shoots, I wasn’t able to,” she told the magazine.
“Then the strike hit, so I thought… why not!? I’m not filming anything right now, and it’s an opportunity to do what I want...

The 2000s were full of remakes of beloved horror franchises. "Nightmare on Elm Street," "Friday the 13th," "Halloween," "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," and many more were reinvented for a new generation. There were enough of these that the idea of rebooting horror franchises became the main satire target of "Scream 4" — the best of that franchise's sequels. But despite how many of these there were, most failed to leave a lasting impact.
This is why it was so surprising that "Halloween" would find such big success with its second reboot — technically, it's third, if you count "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later." David Gordon Green reinvented the classic horror movie in a legacy sequel that served as a love letter to fans. Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

The more we head into this new generation of "Scream" films, the more we see the parallels to the original trilogy. Like "Scream 2," "Scream 6" was rushed into production immediately after the success of its predecessor, with mixed results. Both Screams 2 and 6 gave us some of the most exciting and suspenseful chase sequences of the whole series, but they also gave us two messy final acts, both of which probably could've been polished over script-wise if the production had been given a little more time.
The parallels don't stop there: Just like the longer gap between Screams 2 and 3, "Scream 7" is also set to take much longer to release in theaters than its predecessor. It'll also experience a few creative changes behind the scenes, as well as some uncertainty over which major cast members are coming back. In the third movie's case, this ended up in one of...

The best thing about the "Scream" franchise is that, as far as most fans are concerned, there are no downright awful entries. Some movies are weaker than others, sure, but no movie was so bad that the series' creators had no choice but to reboot the entire thing. This is a series that builds on itself, embracing continuity and refusing to allow viewers to discard any of its entries. The "Star Wars" sequels pleased nobody when they tried to make "Rise of Skywalker" serve as a reversal of every controversial decision made in the previous film, but the "Scream" series has never made any such cowardly mistake. Every sequel matters in this franchise, no matter what. No movie is going to apologize for anything the last movie did.
Still, not all "Scream" movies are created equal. Some of them have tone problems, or lackluster killer reveals. Some of them are...

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

Kevin Williamson, the creator of the “Scream” horror franchise who penned the scripts for “Scream” (1996), “Scream 2” (1997) and “Scream 4” (2011), appeared on the “Happy Horror Time” podcast and urged executives involved with the series to pay Neve Campbell what she’s worth so she can return as Sydney Prescott. Campbell headlined every “Scream” movie until this year’s “Scream 6.” She opted not to star in the sequel due to a salary offer she felt was beneath her value to the franchise.
“I know exactly where she’s coming from,” Williamson said on the podcast when asked about Campbell’s exit from the franchise. “I know her well. I love and adore her, and that’s what she did and it’s great for her. I love everyone involved with ‘Scream’ and all I can say is pay her the money. Yes, you heard it, everyone. That’s what I would do.

Hello, Sidney…As portrayed by Neve Campbell, Sidney Prescott was one of the great final girls in slasher movie history. No boyfriend, freaky film student or long-lost half-brother could knock her off. For that, she was easily the face – not to be confused with the ghostface – of the Scream franchise. And just like the fans, Neve Campbell knew her worth. It turns out, the studio didn’t. Now, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has come to her defense, saying she was owed every penny she asked for.
Speaking on the Happy Horror Time podcast (as per IndieWire), Williamson – who wrote the first two Screams as well as Scream 4 – said that Neve Campbell deserves the pay bump. “I totally respect her opinion…I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I...

Scream creator Kevin Williamson is hoping Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott in the hit horror films, eventually makes a return to the franchise after she exited last year due to salary disputes.
During a recent interview on the Happy Horror Time podcast, the writer-producer-director said he “totally respect[s] her opinion,” but he hopes something can be figured out for future movies.
