Medical shows are always popular with audiences; the same is true of most comedy series.

There has long been no shortage of fairy tales and mystical adventures on television – the broadcast network is filled with series for every taste and audience. The romantic travails of princesses intersect with dark mystical horror stories, and for every vampire saga there is a Winchester family ready to kill any evil creature.
And yet, among all these titles, one series stood out from the day it premiered – with an unusual approach, a wealth of imagination, charismatic characters, and a promising story.
Grimm, which debuted in 2011, ran for six seasons, and received an impressive 89% from critics and 90% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, is not just another urban fantasy series. It successfully combines a police procedural with a story about a hunter of evil spirits; each episode is dedicated to the investigation of a crime, but it's not people who are involved but monsters from different fantasy stories.

The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.
Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

It’s time again for spooks and frights, and with the original “Charmed” series celebrating its 25th anniversary, it’s also seems like a good time to check out some of TV’s most famous (and infamous) witches.
From the time Samantha Stevens “Bewitched” us with a twitch of her nose nearly 60 years ago, witches have appeared in just about every genre on television. From the comical “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” to the terrifying “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” to the fantasy “Once Upon a Time” to the police procedural “Grimm,” the magical powers and spells of witches and sorcerers have enchanted, spooked and amused viewers.
Besides “Bewitched,” “Charmed” is the longest-lasting series to primarily feature witches, and attracted viewers not only with its supernatural elements, but also with the family dramas that involved the sisters at the heart of the show.

Director Samuel Bodin established a talent for crafting bone-chilling scares with “Marianne,” a series that saw a fairy tale nightmare spill over into waking life for its protagonists. Based on a 2001 three-issue comic book miniseries written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Richard Pace, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an alternate-world tale that introduced an alternate version of Bruce Wayne and the residents of Gotham to Lovecraftian horrors. It’s the most overtly horrific entry in the animated Batman franchise as well as the strangest.
In the 1920s an expedition led by Bruce Wayne arrives in Antarctica looking for another expedition, this one led by Professor Cobblepot. What he finds instead are mutated creatures and the professor’s undead assistant Grendon whom he brings back to Gotham.

January Jones is joining the debate over self-tape audition practices in Hollywood.
The “Mad Men” alum took to her Instagram Stories to call out fees to audition and the issue of sending in self-tapes as opposed to in-person readings. “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person,” Jones wrote on Instagram (via Variety). “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic.”
She continued, “I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes. Thanks to strong reviews, a buzzy trailer and young fans celebrating the film on TikTok, “M3GAN” is about to top 100 million worldwide. The Gerard Johnstone-directed film was sold as yet another horror team-up between Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, with both moguls now famous enough among horror fans for such a pitch to qualify as akin to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas uniting for “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
The film’s not-so-secret weapon, however, is its screenwriter Akela Cooper. The self-professed genre nerd isn’t yet a household name, but she may be on her way to becoming one.
Cooper took time last week to speak with TheWrap, discussing the origins of “M3GAN,” trimming the initially R-rated film to a PG-13 and inserting her parents into the “Star Trek” universe. Most importantly, she answered tough questions about the biggest plot hole in her 2018 slasher romp “Hell Fest.

Time and time again, horror has proven to be one of the most successful genres of them all, thanks in part to low budgets with big rewards. Case in point, look at "M3GAN," which raked in over 30 million in its opening weekend against a modest 12 million budget. If the killer AI wasn't one of Blumhouse's top priorities beforehand, it is now. How could she not be? Last October revealed the teaser that set the internet ablaze with the titular android dancing on the way to her next kill. "M3GAN" fever was in full effect.
On top of "Housebound" director Gerard Johnstone, the success of "M3GAN" can also be attributed to its screenwriter Akela Cooper. Her television work includes such shows like "Grimm," "Luke Cage," and "The 100," before making her feature film debut with the script for "Hell Fest." But everything changed once the bonkers ride that is "Malignant" came to the screen.

Coming into a franchise as storied as the Shrek series, director Joel Crawford was thrilled at the opportunity to show a new side of the iconic Puss in Boots. A sequel to the 2011 Puss in Boots film, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish takes place after Shrek Forever After, when Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is accidentally killed by a bell and discovers he is down to his ninth, and final, life. After a brush with a mysterious wolf who is determined to take his last life, Puss decides to live the rest of his life in hiding. However, he soon learns about a wishing star that could help them get his lives back. Crawford wanted to take the story of Puss in Boots into a darker direction than the other films in the Shrek franchise, using inspiration from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

1986 was a big year for Tom Cruise, with Tony Scott’s Top Gun cementing his status as the era’s biggest star. Yet, earlier that year, Universal released a delayed Tom Cruise epic that actually carried a heftier price tag than Top Gun and paired him with that movie’s director, Tony Scott’s brother – Ridley Scott. The film was Legend, and while a pretty notable flop in 1986, it’s since gone on to become something of a classic in the fantasy genre, even if it scared Cruise away from ever attempting another fantasy epic. It remains the only time Ridley Scott directed Cruise and sorting through the myriad cuts of the film, which boasts not one but two exceptional musical scores (Tangerine Dream and Jerry Goldsmith), is a chore. Yet, there’s something to be said about this Grimm’s Fairy Tale for adults – with Tim Curry stealing the...

Amazon Studios is shaking up the leadership of its TV programming operations under Head of Television Vernon Sanders, I have learned. Marc Resteghini is stepping down as US/Global Head of Development, sources said. He is negotiating a producing deal with Amazon Studios. Nick Pepper, Head of Studio Creative Content, and Laura Lancaster, Head of Series, are expected to divvy up Resteghini’s responsibilities and co-run development and production of TV content, reporting to Sanders. MGM TV’s operations remain separate and do not factor into the current executive changes.
A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Resteghini, Pepper and Lancaster were named to their most recent roles in early 2021 as part of an Amazon Studios TV restructuring that created the layer of three top programming positions reporting to then-Amazon Studios co-heads of TV Sanders and Albert Cheng (who also was COO).

Marlyne Barrett, who plays nurse Maggie Lockwood on NBC’s “Chicago Med,” revealed on Tuesday that she was diagnosed with both uterine and ovarian cancer.
