Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

This whole superposition idea seemed relatively comprehensible in the beginning.
But, as Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 6, the longer the two Jasons and Amanda aren't in their worlds, the more complicated things have gotten for them.
What they're all discovering is it's the little things that count.
That was all it had been for Jason1 and Amanda -- a lot of frustrating swings and near misses.
Jason1 has religiously been noting the differences between the planet they had just visited and his home world.
The question is why. Are those doors in The Corridor numbered, and we just don't realize it?
Here's something that isn't readily apparent to the non-experimental physicists among us viewers.
Time Bandits: Everything We Know So Far
Supposedly, the state of mind of the person opening the door in The Corridor influences how the world on the other side manifests itself.

The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

In the fifth episode of Dark Matter, Jason1 and Amanda came across Blair2, who suggested that they find a reality that’s somewhat habitable and settle down there, instead of repeatedly trying and failing to get back to Jason1’s reality. According to Blair2, reality-traveling can take a toll on one’s psyche and cause them to break down and get lost in the multiverse. Jason1 and Amanda didn’t pay much heed to Blair2’s advice and exhausted their ampoules in their search for Jason1’s reality. And they paid the price for it by watching the most horrific stuff imaginable. Meanwhile, Jason2 essentially sold his box, the psychoactive drugs, and the multiversal corridor to Leighton1 for millions of dollars, in the hopes of living a lavish life with Daniela and Charlie. However, as soon as Jason2 learned that Jason1 had entered the multiverse and was looking to return home,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the first five episodes of “Dark Matter,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Blake Crouch ostensibly writes sci-fi stories; his mind-bending suspense novels “Dark Matter,” “Recursion” “Upgrade” are set in worlds where technology presents an opportunity to visit other dimensions, time travel and advance one’s brain and body to superhuman levels. But what makes Crouch’s work so special is that his books are love stories as well.
It’s certainly true of “Dark Matter,” his 2016 novel that he adapted into a limited series, currently airing on Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as Jason Dessan, a loving family man who is kidnapped by a Jason from an alternate universe so that the two can swap lives. Jason2, as Crouch refers to him, finally gets to live out his life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley.) Jason Prime, however, is...

It's turning out to be a long ride home for Jason1.
He and Amanda's learning how to use The Box as transportation on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 5 is a lot like those movies where the hero has to determine how to fly an aircraft using controls labeled in a foreign language.
At least in that situation, the hero can use intuition to some degree. That primarily hasn't worked out for Jason1 and Amanda.
Instead, they've had to navigate using a brutal trial-and-error method, emphasizing error. So far, it hasn't killed either of them, but they've certainly been imperiled.
The pair has faced a steep learning curve since escaping from Leighton2's Velocity Labs on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 2.
They've landed on a snow planet, a flooded world, and another decimated by a pandemic. They've discovered seeming familiar to Jason1 doesn't make for a sure thing.

The fourth episode of Dark Matter was dedicated to explaining the mechanics of the box that allowed people to travel between different realities. The characters and the handful of people watching the Apple TV+ series learned that the box was using the traveler’s last thoughts to determine their destination. Since Jason1 and Amanda were in a constant state of distress and anxiety, they ended up in realities that were actively trying to kill them. They even got lost in a snowy reality, and they had to use their wits and grit to get back into the box. Meanwhile, Jason2 was chilling in Jason1’s reality. He secured his future by starting negotiations with Leighton1 for the rights to the box so that he could shower Daniela and Charlie with gifts and money. But that didn’t go down well with Daniela at all. Additionally, in an attempt to catch Jason1 and Amanda,...

Apple TV+ has quickly become the place where you find peak TV and to achieve that status they have to leave some shows behind and support the shows with potential. 2024 has been a pretty good year for Apple TV+ as it saw the premieres of some great new shows like The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin and Sugar but we also have some shows that didn’t make it out of the chopping block. In the ever-evolving landscape of science fiction, Dark Matter, based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel, emerges as an ambitious yet convoluted series. This Apple TV+ adaptation relies heavily on its talented cast, particularly Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, to keep it from unraveling under the weight of its intricate plot. The series explores what happens when physicist Jason Dessen, portrayed by Edgerton, is abducted into an alternate reality where his life took a different path. This premise provides a fertile ground for examining the concept of parallel worlds, a staple in recent sci-fi narratives. Edgerton deftly navigates his dual roles,

Who Is Max in Dark Matter? The Apple TV+ Series Just Threw Fans A Curveball - Main Image
Who is Max in Apple TV's Sci-Fi series Dark Matter? Although the series centers on Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton) and his alternate-universe counterpart, the secret revealed in episodes 3 and 4 might change that – and raise the stakes considerably.
Episode 3, titled The Box, reveals the existence of a mysterious child, previously unmentioned in the series. This deviates from the series' source material, Blake Crouch's 2016 best-selling novel of the same name, and has led to some out-there theories. Here's what makes Max's existence crucial in Dark Matter.
Content Spoilers: This article contains spoilers for Apple Tv+'s Dark Matter, so proceed with caution.
Who Is Max Dessen in Dark Matter? Theories Explored
Episode 3 shows "Jason B", aka the alternate universe version of physics professor Jason Dessen ("Jason A"), a heartbreaking part of Jason A's reality.

Finally, a little bit of clarity emerges.
Jason1 and Amanda got a bit of a handle on how this dimension-hopping thing works on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 4.
Also, we got a peek at Jason's motivations for switching places with Jason1 on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 1.
The Corridor made traveling through the multiverse somewhat more believable for viewers.
By the episode's end, the corridor that several of the players ended up using was more comprehensible.
But, at the same time, it was potentially even more dangerous. Be careful what you wish for, indeed.
What became readily apparent was that Jason2 was the only person who understood exactly how The Box worked.
Jason1 determined early on that The Corridor was the gateway to a multiverse of possible dimensions.
But understanding the big picture isn't the same as being familiar with the essential details of making the process work.

The multiverse just got a little more complicated on Dark Matter.
In Apple TV+’s limited series, which is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, physics professor Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) is pulled into an alternate version of his life by a stranger. In this universe, he chose his science career over his pregnant girlfriend Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), they never got married, and she terminated her pregnancy, meaning that their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) was never born. The kicker? Jason’s abductor is an alternate universe version of himself, who’s now taken over his life with Daniela and Charlie.

Eric releases on Netflix on May 30, 2024.
A six-episode limited series starring heavyweights Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann will be available on Netflix at the end of May. Abi Morgan created and wrote the series. She is known for her incredible work on films like Shame and The Iron Lady and her Emmy-winning writing on The Hour. The series follows a set of parents who are struggling after their son is kidnapped on his way to school.
Set in New York, Eric replicates some of the incredible work of past crime-thrilling series from Netflix, such as Mindhunters, Griselda, and Ripley. The often dark tone of the series brings a nice twist with the introduction of Eric. Eric is a character that Vincent and Cassie’s son Edgar had drawn. The larger-than-life monster is brought to life after Edgar’s kidnapping, bringing a much-needed comedic aspect to the series.

2002 was the year of the release of the already legendary Firefly. During its short life on television, the series managed to gain cult status, an army of loyal fans and an honorable place in the list of the best science fiction projects.
However, the love of critics and viewers could not save Firefly from a quick cancellation. The Fox network expected sky-high ratings, but its bosses interfered with the filming process and even showed episodes in a different order than the creators intended. As a result, the show was axed after its first season.
If you still haven't come to terms with Firefly's short life and have already watched its one and only season a hundred times, then you should pay attention to a series that went unnoticed by many viewers, but definitely deserves the attention of sci-fi fans – Dark Matter, released in 2015.

Eddie Vedder has called Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker a “fucking pussy” after the NFL player stated his belief that women are better off staying at home rather than pursuing a career.
The Pearl Jam singer made a lengthy speech during his band’s concert in Las Vegas on Saturday (May 18th) in response to Butker’s now-infamous commencement address at Benedictine College last weekend. Beginning his comments, Vedder praised Pearl Jam’s opening act Deep Sea Diver.

“The singer, Jessica, and the keyboard player, Patti, they must not have believed that ‘diabolical lie’ that women should take pride in taking a backseat to their man,” Vedder said, quoting a phrase from Butker’s speech.
He continued by saying that “there should be pride in homemaking if you’re a man or a woman” — which he described as “one of the hardest jobs” — before...

Netflix’s rom-com “Mother of the Bride” and Will Forte crime drama series “Bodkin” led the Luminate streaming originals chart for the week of May 10-16, elbowing past higher-profile competition.
Two buzzy streaming original movies — Netflix’s “Unfrosted” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” — held up well in their second full week in release. The Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Road House” continues to be a work horse for Prime Video, which confirmed earlier this week that a second installment is in development. A surprise on the original film chart was Netflix documentary “Living with Leopards,” which debuted at No. 7.
“Bodkin,” which revolves around a podcast crew that comes to investigate the disappearance of three people from a small town in Ireland years before, moved swiftly up the original streaming series chart, passing Netflix’s “A Man in Full.” The Jeff Daniels’ starrer came in at No. 2 in its second full week in release.

The hate for each of these projects has gained as much of a cult following as the shows themselves. But how much of it is justified?
Here are seven shows that are much better than critics and audiences say they are.
7. Imposters (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%
Where to watch: Prime Video, Fandango at Home
The list begins with Imposters, a well-crafted dark comedy about a con artist who seduces victims and takes their money, which, unlike many of the following shows, is currently receiving warm reviews. Unfortunately, the ratings were so low at the time of its release that the show was canceled after only two seasons.
6. Dark Matter (2015)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%
Where to watch: The CW
Dark Matter is often compared to a low-budget rip-off of The Expanse since both premiered in 2015. However, the show in question raised equally interesting ethical questions about the identity of the protagonists, and coupled with some good action scenes,...

Jason1 (original Jason Dessen) can't catch a break, can he?
But at least he was still alive when Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 3 concluded, as the bodies kept dropping around him.
And the secret was out, in one dimension anyhow.
Is this series making more sense to anyone yet?
You have to feel for Jason1. He got dumped in a world that's not his own on Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 1.
Since his arrival, he has maintained, to anyone who will listen, that he didn't belong there. And the result was, at first, that he was considered crazy.
Things improved slightly in this episode as his coworkers at Velocity Labs decided he had amnesia or some other form of brain damage.
That's so much better than being insane.
Jason1 was right to be suspicious of Leighton and Velocity after seeing that dimension's version of the love of his life, Gabriela, gunned down by Dawn with no provocation.

Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi thriller Dark Matter already has us gripping the edge of our seats just two episodes in, but there are still plenty of questions to be answered. Like, how will Jason 1 (Joel Edgerton) return home to his loving wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), who is living unaware of her husband’s departure to an entirely different dimension? Why did Jason 2 (also Edgerton) kidnap Jason 1 and send him back to his alt-reality? How do all the other players at Velocity Labs tie into the nefarious scientific happenings going down at the R&d corp? And when will we finally see the show use Jason 2’s invention, a 12×12 metal box that hops between dimensions? The answer to that last question is: Very soon. In the drama’s third episode, titled “The Box,” we’ll get our first good look at the cube in question and just how it works,...

Casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord was a pretty big gamble for Marvel. After all, to most of us he was the man-child Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation and nothing more. Fortunately for Pratt and the MCU, director James Gunn saw something special in him. While a number of actors also auditioned for the part, one who still remembers that moment and why he didn’t land Peter Quill is Joel Edgerton, who is well aware he just didn’t understand the tone they were going for.
Appearing on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast (via Variety), Joel Edgerton remembered Guardians of the Galaxy being one of the most high-profile projects he missed out on, probably for good reason. “Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris [Pratt], didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did. Following its critically acclaimed first season, AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” is back for round two, and the Gothic drama based on Anne Rice’s beloved novels remains one of TV’s best and brightest despite the inherent darkness within.
The new season (premiering Sunday at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+) picks up in the aftermath of the jaw-dropping reveal that closed out the show’s freshman outing: Louis’ (Jacob Anderson) loyal assistant Rashid is actually his vampire lover, Armand (Assad Zaman). Once again the show makes excellent use of its unique interview framing to jump between multiple timelines as Louis weaves a complicated tale for journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), one that explores his relationships with both Armand and Claudia, beginning with their adventures in Paris in the 1940s.
