While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Even before the awards ceremony began, as talent started filing into the Citizen News venue in the heart of Hollywood, it was a marvel to see “Palm Royale” star and Vanguard Award recipient Carol Burnett hold court as fellow honorees like “Under the Bridge” producer/star Riley Keough, recipient of the Maverick Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, recipient of the Visionary Award (and whom Burnett presented an Emmy to in January), came to greet the comedy legend.

Exclusive: John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in a recurring role. He joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy and Taylor Selé.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hawkes has been cast as ‘Sebastian Hyde,’ a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.

In "True Detective: Night Country," the Alaskan mining town of Ennis feels tinged with something stranger than months of endless darkness. The extreme cold of the icy plains adds to the sinister aura of the town. The disappearance of a group of researchers — the newest case that baffles the town's police department — seems to be linked with the unsolved murder of a local woman, whose absence continues to haunt the living. Although "Night Country" basks in the beauty and horror of its fictional Alaskan town, the series was almost entirely filmed in Iceland, which came with a unique set of challenges for everyone involved.
Series cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister ("Tár") spoke to Ibc about the obstacles faced by the cast and crew while filming in such an intensely cold and dark location. "We were doing prep for the show in Iceland in August when the sun doesn't set until midnight, but...

Were you hoping to see more Alaska crime-solving from True Detective’s Danvers and Navarro next season? Sorry, but you’re left out in the cold.
The upcoming fifth season of HBO’s crime drama anthology will feature “different characters,” a “different setting” and a “different story” than Season 4’s Night Country, showrunner Issa López confirms to our sister site Variety. That fits with True Detective’s pattern of refreshing its cast and setting each season, but some fans were hoping to see more of Danvers and Navarro, since López served as showrunner last season as well.

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

HBO’s “True Detective” took over television in 2014 with Woody Harrelson and Mathew Matthew McConaughey as two gritty detectives struggling to solve a seemingly impossible string of supernatural murders. Ten years and three seasons later, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis have taken over for “True Detective: Night Country,” ushering in the most-viewed season of the series to date.
As part of the Variety Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, Variety‘s deputy awards and features editor Jenelle Riley sat down with Reis, co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and creator Issa López to talk about how they brought the latest season of “True Detective” to life.
“True Detective: Night Country” follows detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) as they investigate an incident at an Alaskan research station and the disappearances of young women from a local Indigenous community. HBO’s “True Detective” franchise had been off the air for five years, since its third season concluded in 2019. But all of that changed this year under the stewardship of Mexican filmmaker Issa López (“Tigers Are Not Afraid”), when the series came roaring back into the zeitgeist — with “True Detective: Night Country,” led by stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
The murder mystery revolved around a central question: How did the scientists at the Tsalal research station in Ennis, Alaska end up as a frozen pile of dead naked men on the ice? A corpsicle, if you will! The answer — as uncovered by the true detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) — took the women through a maze of questions, some of which seemed to have no logical explanation: but in the end, very much did. Through their investigative work, they healed themselves — and Ennis too.

Following two days of star-studded conversations about climate change, Hillary Clinton closed out the Environmental Media Association Impact Summit on Wednesday with a chat about kids and the planet — and a dig at Donald Trump’s recent guilty verdicts.
Clinton joined showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett and Good Energy founder Anna Jane Joyner at the Pendry West Hollywood for a panel on how climate change is affecting children’s development. The Clinton Foundation is putting a particular focus on the issue via its Too Small to Fail program, and is pushing for it to be highlighted in Hollywood projects to increase awareness.

When the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report surveying film roles for Native Americans last October, of the 100 highest-grossing theatrical movies released between 2007 and 2022, only one had an Indigenous performer in a lead role. Yet when speaking to Native creatives and performers, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism for what’s to come for their representation in entertainment. “I feel very hopeful about where we are,” Jana Schmieding, who recently starred on “Reservation Dogs,” tells Variety. “I want to think that studios see the value in our storytelling.”
Variety’s inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, which will take place June 5 in Los Angeles, will focus on both the value and future of such stories. The invite-only breakfast program will feature a series of keynote and panel conversations with creators, talent and executives that will center on Indigenous storytelling and spotlight the achievements of its communities in film and TV.

When James Gunn sat to announce the projects in the first slate of the Dcu, the Lanterns series was one of the most hyped projects. Following the Ryan Reynolds debacle in 2011, the character has been sidelined from the live-action media for years before Gunn gave it another shot. Now, the latest rumors suggest that the casting for the upcoming series has started.

Lanterns was announced as a True Detective-esque project with two of the most fan-favorite Green Lanterns from the comics, Hal Jordan and John Stewart leading the show. Reportedly, the makers have put out certain criteria to cast the upcoming heroes of the Dcu.

At nearly three-and-a-half hours, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was already a long movie, but Jodie Foster thinks it could have been longer. In fact, she believes it should have been expanded into an eight-hour limited series.

A pivotal moment comes as the fourth season of “True Detective: Night Country” hits a thrilling end in episode six. Law enforcement officers Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), find themselves at the entrance to the ice cave. After they reach a dead end, Liz decides they should head back, but just as they do so, the two end up falling into the cave’s lower levels.

Jodie Foster wanted more “Killers of the Flower Moon” — or at least, to see more “perspectives” showcased in the film’s retelling of the Osage Nation massacres.
The actress said during an interview with Variety that Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated epic could have benefitted from being even longer, or perhaps reimagined as a limited series. Scorsese’s film already received criticisms for being too long at almost four hours; theaters began issuing an intermission during screenings, much to the dismay of editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. have a long history. Their careers have intersected over time, starting when Foster directed Downey in her 1995 Thanksgiving comedy “Home for the Holidays,” where he played the sweet-natured but rebellious black sheep of the family. More recently, both were nominated in supporting categories at this year’s Oscars — Foster was nominated for her role as an encouraging swim coach in “Nyad,” and Downey won for playing a villainous government official in “Oppenheimer” — and played key roles in HBO limited series. Foster was a hard-bitten cop in “True Detective: Night Country,” writer-director Issa López’s reimagining of the crime franchise that centered on Alaska Native communities. Downey tackled four roles — a CIA agent, a university professor, a congressman and an indie filmmaker, each representing a facet of the American power structure — in Korean director Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of the post-Vietnam War novel “The Sympathizer.

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.

One fandom's loss is another's gain, apparently. While Marvel Studios has been undergoing something of an identity crisis in recent years, capped by Disney's Bob Iger actually promising to slow down production of movies and shows during a shareholder call while Marvel's Brad Winderbaum recently copped to the shortcomings of the #ItsAllConnected approach, one of the bigger casualties has been the shaky status of the announced "Blade" movie. Starring the great Mahershala Ali as the eponymous vampire hunter, the film has undergone quite a bit of behind-the-scenes chaos, from directorial changes to significant amounts of creative overhaul -- to the extent, in fact, that the star reportedly came this close to parting ways with the studio altogether. Well, Marvel fans can consider this latest development as yet another troublesome sign. Dinosaur fans, meanwhile, have our permission to rejoice.

Plot details haven’t been unveiled, but this new installment is expected to ignite a new trilogy following the three “Jurassic Park” and three “Jurassic World” films. In 2022, “Jurassic World Dominion” wrapped up the sequel trilogy with $1 billion globally.

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

Jodie Foster may have been nominated at the Academy Awards for portraying a real-life rape survivor in “The Accused” (for which she ultimately won) as well as as a child prostitute in “Taxi Driver,” but now the actress is calling out the overwhelming trend throughout Hollywood history of male screenwriters relying on assault storylines to craft female characters.
Foster told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “always shocked” by how many scripts included a rape backstory for women.
“For most of my career, I was always shocked that so many of the scripts that I read, the entire motivation for the female character was that she’d been traumatized by rape. That seemed to be the only motivation that male screenwriters could come up with for why women did things,” Foster said. “‘She’s kind of in a bad mood, yeah, there’s definitely some rape in her past.'...

“I don’t know if anybody told you, but none of us knows what we’re doing,” announces two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster halfway through the Drama Actress Emmy Roundtable. She’s surrounded by two more Oscar winners — Expats’ Nicole Kidman and Lessons in Chemistry’s Brie Larson — who nod in agreement. The True Detective star continues, “and that’s the real beauty of it, having that freshness of doubting yourself.” Over the course of an hour at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica, that trio, along with The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston, Shogun’s Anna Sawai, Griselda’s Sofía Vergara and Feud’s Naomi Watts, discuss everything from mentorship to menopause.

Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” could be the next big hit in the Best Limited Series category at this year’s Emmys, as this is a category that loves true crime miniseries. This one documents the harrowing murder of Reene Virk as police officers try to solve the case and a writer (Rebecca Godfrey) is drawn into the hidden world of those accused of murdering Virk. The series is based on Godfrey’s own book of the same name with “Daisy Jones & the Six” star Riley Keough, who also produces, portraying her. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” Best Actress Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone features as the police officer investigating the case.
This eight-episode miniseries, like any true crime series, is a tough watch at times but that makes it all the more vital. Meanwhile, the performances of Keough, Gladstone, and the teen-centric cast are all exquisite, as noted by critics.

Back in January, the news broke that a series based on Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Eisner Award-winning comic book, Criminal, is in development for Amazon Prime Video, and the project has now added another lead cast member.
Joining Richard Jenkins as Ivan will be Adria Arjona as Greta Watson (they appear to have dropped a "t" from the character's first name for some reason).
This take on Greta is described as “a sharp-tongued top-level car thief and driver and the widowed mother of Angie. Ever since her husband died in a bank job gone bad, Greta has been battling with herself about how to escape the only life she’s ever known – and the only place she’s ever thrived. HBO broadcast its first women’s boxing bout, between Kali Reis and Cecilia Brækhus, in 2018. Just six years later, Reis is one of the stars on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” where she plays Detective Evangeline Navarro alongside Jodie Foster. That could very well be the first time any HBO lead was first seen on the pay cabler in a boxing match.
“What’s really great about this whole journey is that things that are so far fetched are like not impossible in some part of my brain that understands that it’s a possibility,” Reis tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “And I think that’s one of the many things that keeps me grinding so hard.”

He who watches the watchmen must light the lantern. Damon Lindelof, who ran HBO’s adaptation of Watchmen, will now take charge of a Green Lantern series titled Lanterns. And he’s not the only major name attached.
As James Gunn posted on social media over the weekend: “Yes, it’s true. Outside of Watchmen, Lindelof was of course a key contributor to Lost. As Gunn noted, Lanterns will also feature work by Ozark’s Chris Mundy and DC comics staple Tom King. Others that have been tied to the show include The Strain’s Justin Britt-Gibson, The Penguin’s Brennah Gibson and Animal Kingdom’s Vanessa Baden Kelly.

DC Studios' upcoming Green Lantern TV show, "Lanterns," has assembled its writer corps. Co-CEO James Gunn confirmed on Instagram today that the series' pilot script and show bible was written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and DC Comics writer Tom King, who has been part of the DC Universe's creative team since the start.
"Lanterns" was first announced in January 2023, along with the rest of the "Gods and Monsters" slate, as it's been dubbed by Gunn and his fellow co-ceo, Peter Safran. It's a soft reboot for the DC Extended Universe, which fizzled out into a succession of box office bombs, and is currently taking a bit of a breather while Gunn and Safran assemble this massive new slate of films and TV shows. Gunn is also getting personally stuck in, writing and directing the upcoming "Superman" movie reboot and continuing his creative duties on "Peacemaker" for season 2.

If there's one thing we've learned in this social media age, it's that some people have a very good memory (meaning a once innocent comment can come back to haunt even the best of us).
Earlier today, it was confirmed that Max's Lanterns has tapped Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof to pen the pilot and a "bible" for the long-awaited TV series. Now, James Gunn's one-time thoughts on the latter have been revealed in a resurfaced Facebook comment.
Way back on March 18, 2012, the DC Studios co-ceo and Superman director said, "Lindelof is close to Satan in my book because of the end of Lost. He's the Uri Gellar of storytellers, a total scam artist with no integrity whatsoever. And a liar."

Damon Lindelof is returning to television and to superheroes.

Following some recent rumors, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has officially announced the creative team for the long-awaited Green Lantern Max series, which will be titled Lanterns.

“Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns Dcu series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof,” Gunn captioned his post, which also included a (possible) first look at some concept art for the show. “A hearty welcome to Chris and @damonlindelof as they join the DC Studios family.”

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown.
