The lack of Latine representation in film today is disappointing when you consider Latines accounted for 29 percent of moviegoers in the States in 2020. And here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Latines also represent 26 percent of horror movie audiences, compared with 20 percent for other genres, according to a recent survey. Still, there's a marked lack of Latine actors starring in horror films. But Melissa Barrera's career has been challenging that. The horror and suspense queen has starred in several films within the genre in just the past few years, including "Scream," "Scream IV," "Bed Rest," and "Your Monster."
Her latest role is as Joey in "Abigail," a gory vampire film released April 19 about a group of criminals assigned to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crooked millionaire. Like a lot of Barrera's roles, Joey isn't your typical in-your-face Latina character. She's a war veteran with a dream to...

There’s a funny little citation on multi-hyphenate Melissa Barrera’s Wikipedia page. About halfway down the section entitled “acting,” we’re told that “following her roles in horror media in 2022, Barrera was crowned a scream queen.” There was not an actual coronation for this honor, but it’s hard to argue with. After starring in two “Scream” movies, the Tubi chiller “Bed Rest,” and this week’s new release “Abigail” (a biting spin on the classic “Dracula’s Daughter”), the Mexican starlet is a bonafide scream queen, even if she was never quite expecting the honor.
For Barrera, who got her start on telenovelas and was introduced to most American audiences through the big screen musical “In the Heights,” it’s another step in a career that just keeps evolving in some surprising ways. No, Barrera told IndieWire with laugh, she didn’t set out to be “scream queen,” but she loves it.

Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera may have been fired from Scream 7, but she is in Universal Pictures’ upcoming “Dracula’s Daughter” film Abigail, which was directed by her Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and is set to reach theatres on April 19th. Even beyond that film, Barrera told The Hollywood Reporter that she has no intention of leaving the horror genre behind.
Barrera, who has also starred in a horror movie called Bed Rest, said, “I don’t think I’ll be able to get away from horror, and I also don’t want to. I love the genre so much. It’s so much fun to make. Also, I think a genre that people show up to the theaters for no matter what. No stars have to be in the movie for people to show up. Melissa Barrera said she’s sticking with the horror genre while opening up about her upcoming film, Your Monster, at The Hollywood Reporter‘s studio during the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.
In the horror rom-com by Caroline Lindy, Barrera plays Laura, an aspiring musical theater actress whose boyfriend breaks up with her while she’s recovering from cancer surgery. As Laura faces her heartbreak, a monster comes out of her closet and the pair spark a romance akin to Beauty and the Beast.
Barrera, speaking to THR‘s Seija Rankin in some of her first interviews following her high-profile exit from the Scream franchise, said she took on the Your Monster role after a close friend, who is also friends with Lindy, encouraged her to appear in the filmmaker’s debut feature film.
“He called me, and he was like, ‘So there’s this friend, she’s an actor and a director.

Despite all of American Horror Story’s witches, vampires, murder Santas, and serial killers, the anthology series has always suffered from an identity crisis and focus issues. American Horror Story’s 12th season comes in after what was arguably the series’ strongest season in over a decade that would have made for a powerful, poignant way to conclude the anthology horror series. Instead, American Horror Story: Delicate ventures into risky, overdone territory with this pregnancy body horror drama.
What’s significant about AHS: Delicate is that it features some major firsts for the series. For one, American Horror Story: Delicate is the first season where series creator Ryan Murphy isn’t showrunner. Instead, Hailey Feiffer–a playwright–takes over these duties and writes the entire season. Sources tell Bloody Disgusting that Tony Todd has signed on to reprise his role as William Bludworth in the upcoming sixth installment in the Final Destination franchise.
The horror icon played the enigmatic mortician in Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and Final Destination 5.
The plot reportedly centers on first responders. We’re told that the film digs into Bludworth’s backstory, including a flashback to his childhood that reveals more about his connection to death.
This may be what franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick was referring to in his recent comments that Final Destination 6 “unearths a whole deep layer to the story.”
Production is set to take place in Vancouver after the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved. Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein (Freaks) will direct from a script by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor (Bed Rest). Filmmaker Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) produces.

Melissa Barrera is firmly establishing herself as a modern scream queen. Not only has she played Samantha Carpenter in both Scream (2022) and Scream VI, but she has also starred in the supernatural horror movie Bed Rest and the survival thriller Keep Breathing, and coming up she has the “erotic nightmare” The One and the Radio Silence project formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter. She also recently finished working on a project called Your Monster, which she describes as a “horror rom-com musical”.
The feature directorial debut of Caroline Lindy, who wrote the film based on her 2019 short of the same name, Your Monster centers on an aspiring actress Laura Franco, whose life falls apart after a cancer diagnosis and devastating breakup. The soft-spoken actress finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming Monster living in her closet.
Barrera plays Laura Franco, with Tommy Dewey (Casual) as the monster.

Content warning: The following story contains text descriptions of pregnancy loss.
We live in a world that doesn't believe women when we say we're experiencing pain - whether it's chronic physical pain or psychological distress. The patriarchal powers that be have always dismissed us, so much so that it has seeped into our healthcare systems. The issue goes way beyond not being believed: the pain gap has deadly consequences, and America is contending with a maternal healthcare crisis worse than in any other developed country.
And while our culture is finally acknowledging this reality, the stigma around these issues is still very real - perhaps most glaringly when it comes to pregnancy loss. Our culture still does not openly discuss the grief and severe psychological impacts miscarriages and stillbirths can have on women. In writer and director Lori Evans Taylor's new supernatural thriller, "Bed Rest," released on Tubi on Dec.
