A small group of advertisers were serenaded by Metallica’s Master of Puppets (one of those songs that Stranger Things brought to a new generation) as they walked into Netflix’s first in-person Upfront.
Held at Pier 59 Studios in New York, the event had the feeling of an immersive theater experience with a lot of black t-shirt-clad staff handing out drinks.
It comes as the streamer unveiled a number of new series and films including a new Kevin Williamson drama, a bull riding drama starring Tim McGraw and a slew of sports docs as well as more episodes of 3 Body Problem.
Shonda Rhimes kicked things off, talking up her move from ABC to Netflix, saying that she’s doing things that can’t always be done on broadcast television. “The definition of a Netflix show is one that people like to watch,” she said before introducing a sneak peek of Bridgerton’s third season,...

Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

As the year winds down, it’s time to look back at Netflix’s biggest hits, and today, we begin by looking into what kids’ TV shows picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s over the past 12 months.
This list is compiled using FlixPatrol data collected from the daily top 10s on Netflix from over 80 countries around the globe. They assign points and values to each title that gets featured on any day. Their data isn’t perfect as their method doesn’t quite fully capture the complexity of viewership data, such as total watch time, repeat viewings, or demographic details of the audience. Also worth noting is that Netflix changed up its top 10 metrics midway through the year to favor views over pure viewing hours. That said, their data provides a pretty accurate snapshot of what performed best over a long period.

“Such a weird habit that I’ve got into today,” says Dan Tapster, the showrunner for Life on Our Planet. “I’ll say, ‘Yeah, we were there to film mammoths. Yeah, people, we’re here to film a T-Rex.’”
And yet, there isn’t really a better way to describe what the team of Life on Our Planet had to do for years to create the footage that makes up the documentary series. Of course, being CGI VFX, the prehistoric stars of the series are a good deal more compliant than the stars of your average nature documentary. But it also required much more planning.
“More so than with our normal series, there was a lot more pre-production,” says Sophie Lanfear, the producer-director and writer of episodes three and eight. “This had an extended phase of research and development before we even went into the field and shot stuff.

Jeff Goldblum’s iconic assertion in 1993’s Jurassic Park is not just one of the most instantly quotable lines in cinema history; it also neatly sums up the four-billion-year history of life on Earth in four short words (five if you count the none-more-Goldblum “uh” in the middle). Of course, the reality is far from that simple.
Now, 30 years later, the makers of Netflix’s phenomenally successful nature doc Our Planet have joined forces with the technical wizards at Industrial Light & Magic for an ambitious fleshing-out of that gigayears-old story of evolution.
A series nearly five years in the making, Life on Our Planet blends groundbreaking visual effects with state-of-the-art nature photography to tell the epic tale of how life has, indeed, found a way.

The rift between Prince Harry and his family hasn’t been resolved yet. And some royal watchers believe that the Duke of Sussex’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, is beyond repair and there is no hope for reconciliation at this point. But what about Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III?
Harry was invited to and attended his dad’s coronation back on May 6, however, the two aren’t believed to have seen one another since the prince’s brief visit that day. Now, a royal commentator is claiming that the duke recently got an olive branch from the king that he decided to “snap in half.”

"Who will rise? Who will fall? Who will rule the world?" Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for a prehistoric animals adventure series called Life on Our Planet, arriving for streaming later this October. Not to be confused with the excellent, must watch documentary David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet that has a very similar name. From Executive Producer Steven Spielberg and the Emmy Award-winning team behind Our Planet comes this new series. This is the story of life's epic, four billion-year journey on Earth, told through its ruling dynasties, the underdogs who defied the odds to survive, and the cataclysmic events that reshaped it. "This is the story of Life on Our Planet" - featuring narration by the one-and-only Morgan Freeman. This is clearly Netflix's version of Apple TV+'s Prehistoric Planet series (made by BBC) - same exact concept and ancient creatures being brought to vivid life on screen.

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

Blue Whales: Return Of The Giants 3D takes viewers on a journey of a lifetime to explore the world of the magnificent blue whale, a species rebounding from its near extinction. In its first full week of availability, the fourth and final season of “Never Have I Ever” has jumped to the No. 1 position on Netflix’s weekly viewership charts for June 12-18.
As of Tuesday, Netflix has begun ranking viewership by estimated number of viewers rather than hours viewed. The streamer calculates this by dividing the number of hours a project was viewed by its runtime. This puts “Never Have I Ever” Season 4 at 11.5 million views for the week.
Though the series’ position on the chart improved, views were actually down compared to last week, when it took second place with 15.5 million views in its first four days of availability.
The return of “Never Have I Ever” did also boost its previous seasons to the chart, with Season 1 grabbing the No. 8 position with 2.6 million views and Season 2 rounding out the bottom of the chart 2.3 million.

As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

The anthology about the dangers of technology is no stranger to the Emmys, having thrice snagged the award for Best TV Movie, while picking up multiple bids for acting, writing and cinematography along the way. These new episodes set their sights on everything from a thinly veiled version of Netflix to society’s obsession with true crime. They feature many familiar faces, too, including three-time Emmy winner for Best Drama Supporting Actor Aaron Paul, Best Comedy Supporting Actress winner Annie Murphy and Best Drama Guest Actress nominee Kate Mara. After a much-needed break, “Black Mirror” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

“Our Planet II” is an English documentary series narrated by David Attenborough. It takes us on an extraordinary journey through the travels of hundreds of species that, like humans, have been forced to migrate, adapt, and start a new life.
This documentary series will leave you with only one reaction: to sit and enjoy its stunning visuals while realizing that we are not alone in this world. Our stories, no matter how wonderful and transcendent they may seem, are only a stage on this small planet in a small system of a galaxy. . among many others.
This wonder of a documentary is absolutely filled with impressive images that, with David Attenborough’s guidance, will allow us to discover nature and its species and contemplate them in their natural habitat. The series makes the journey its nature and nature its reason for existing, guiding us through this great and small journey we call life.

Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.

Prime Video has acquired the rights to “Wild Isles,” the nature documentary series narrated by David Attenborough, through a deal with distributor Banijay Rights, Amazon announced on Thursday. All five episodes will be available Friday, April 21, a day before Earth Day on April 22.
The docuseries caused a stir in the U.K. when a reputed sixth episode was not shown. The Guardian reported in March that it was withdrawn to avoid upsetting conservative politicians and press, who objected to the project being funded by the World Wildlife Fund.
BBC, however, denied the existence of the additional installment: “This is totally inaccurate, there is no ‘sixth episode.’ ‘Wild Isles’ is — and always was — a five part series and does not shy away from environmental content. We have acquired a separate film for iPlayer from the Rspb and WWF and Silverback Films about people working to preserve and restore the biodiversity of the British Isles.

Japan’s biggest film group Toho announced that it has taken a controlling stake in Tia (previously Toho Interactive Animation), a production company behind the “100 Nichikan Ikita Wani,” film and anime series “iii icecrin,” “iii icecrin2” “Ninja Collection” and “That Is the Bottleneck.”

As Gold Derby predicted, Barack Obama was just awarded the Best Narrator prize at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” The former U.S. president was, understandably, not in attendance to accept his first TV Academy honor. He is now halfway to Egot status, having already nabbed two Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.
Obama fended off quite a formidable challenger in three-time Best Narrator Emmy winner David Attenborough, who was recognized this year for “The Mating Game.” The other three contenders in the lineup were returning nominees Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and category first-timer W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”).

The TV academy has honored the work of voice actors nearly every year since 1992 and has bestowed separate Emmys for Best Narrator and Best Voice-Over Performance annually since 2014. Included among those recognized in the former category this year are a three-time champion, a pair of returning nominees and two newcomers (one of whom is a Grammy-winning former U.S. president).
Historian David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) is seeking his fourth Emmy victory against challengers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”), W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”), Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). He already bested Abdul-Jabbar and Nyong’o in 2020, but can he do it again, especially with a heavy hitter like Obama in the mix? Let’s take a look at what makes each of these contenders worthy of the honor. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions...

Exclusive: Netflix is making changes in its feature documentary division.
Jason Spingarn-Koff, who was responsible for helping Netflix win its first Oscar for short doc The White Helmets, is exiting the streamer.
Spingarn-Koff has been with Netflix since 2015 as part of Lisa Nishimura’s documentary team.
His departure, along with a couple of other executives in the team, follows a couple of waves of layoffs at Netflix, which has cut around 475 staffers in the last three months. This move came as a result of the slowdown in the company’s revenue growth.
In addition to White Helmets, Spingarn-Koff has worked on Academy Awards winners Icarus, American Factory and My Octopus Teacher, Peabody Awards winners The Edge of Democracy, Chasing Coral and Audrie & Daisy and a number of Emmy winners including Strong Island. He was also involved in David Attenborough natural history series Our Planet.
