Jenny (1997)
Good comedy - entertaining - never flat
Put two women together in a comedy and your looking for trouble in the laugh department. Most turn to the amusing, then the profound comedy performances like Rhoda or Laverne and Shirley. They start out as something new and funny and soon turn to stone. But Jenny never gets the chance to 'jump the shark' it only lasted seventeen episodes. It was very up beat. It also had story threads that lasted more than two episodes. It had George Hamilton playing a version of himself in a knowing way. At a casual glance this show would look like the same old schtick comedy being pumped out by the studios in a formulaic way. But that's a wrong estimation. I taped a few episodes on video and regularly watch them again and again. Jenny McCarthy does pull her face a lot, but I like that. Face pulling by pretty girls can not be done enough. Comedy from women usually means trying to stay dignified while under fire. Too many such comedies exist. Jenny... is refreshing even fifteen years later. The only downside to this show was the title. It doesn't lend itself to a search in this digital age. Like looking up a film called '9' it's damn hard to find out any info about it. 10,000 references to jenny out there. The show was axed prematurely, never given enough exposure. Hopefully it will be released on DVD.
Getting Even (1981)
bank heist by amateurs
FANTASTIC FILM - small cast picture with talented actors, especially Kate Zentall who plays the frantic artist under the gun. She reminds me of a female woody allen, constantly nervous. Two 'losers' decide to take on a bank thats treated them badly. The nervous energy in the film is great and if this film was to be remade it would probably bomb at the box-office. The Amateur quality is endearing and its one of those films you'll want to see again a year later. When so much pap is being pumped out by Hollywood multi-million budget films. This reminds the viewer that money does not equate to a really good viewing experience. The running time of the film is unusual at about 53 minutes - Find it and watch it. A must see.
Pepe Carvalho (1986)
Aka Spanish Connection
Opening sequence is a little reminiscent of Bergerac. The English version was screened late at night on a commercial channel in the UK. Probably around 1988? Adventures of a Spanish detective, quite gritty/seedy stories. Good detective stories. It was known as the Spanish connection. For some reason you can't find a link anywhere when you search on-line for the English title. I hope this series survives the TV purge that a lot of shows seems to languish in, never to be seen again. I've probably no chance of seeing the English speaking version? again. One really good episode had Pepe falling for a girl who was a transsexual. It was a really unexpected plot twist.
