Memento (2000)
take it or leave it
the movie is kind of hard to follow because it is out of order. it's not a bad movie at all- it's interesting enough and pretty clever. it's a matter of taste whether one would enjoy it or not. personally, i would rather see movies that don't require thinking at times (because sometimes, it just feels good to laugh and forget about everything for a minute). but if it is, then that's okay too. one taste is not better than the other. it's all just personal preference. i watched it for an English film project (it was a great choice for that, might i add) and would not have watched it otherwise. if i had to do it over? i wouldn't, because now that i know what happens, i won't want to watch it again.
to sum up what i said: this movie isn't my normal choice, it was a bit confusing, but it wasn't too terrible.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
To Laugh or To Cry?
This movie is not only hilarious, but it also is sooo sad. The cast is great; all six ladies (and everyone else, for that matter) did a fabulous job at bringing the characters to life. Sally Fields and Julia Roberts are a good choice for mother and daughter- the little arguments are so cute between the two.
I was thrown into watching this movie b/c my school is about to perform the play-version of the movie, which is just as good. While the movie follows most of the play, some of the things added in are brilliant (i.e.- the wedding scene was not included in the play, but some of my favorite parts of the movie were during that scene). I wish we could do the play in the movie-style, but the play is just as entertaining.
:20 Minute Workout (1983)
dated, very 80's, but great!
When this first came out, I wasn't around yet. But by the time I was born, my parents had vidoetaped different episodes of it on two different tapes. Then, when I was about three, my father was trying to lose weight so he would pop in one of the videos. My sister and I were drawn in by the three girls jumping, sweating and smiling at the camera. We actually used to try to do the workout with my dad (although we never got past the jogging)! I thought that it was the coolest, even though I didn't understand the point to it.
Now, hardly anyone remembers the show. I still have the tapes, and even though it's kind of primitive, the workout is a fun and quick way to burn off some calories. It's kind of weird now to be using an 80's show to get in shape, but a good workout, no mater how dated it looks, will always be a good workout.
Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001)
okay, but these kids need acting lessons!
I wasn't able to see any of the original Degrassi series. But when I got the chance to see this, I have to admit this show is pretty good. It deals with real-life situations that REAL people face- and what I really love about it is that it isn't the type of show where in the end, everything is all tied up in a neat little package. I hate the way shows do that. My only complaint is that some of the acting is horrible- like Spinner and Emma really can't act. Other than that, I like it.
Aerobicise (1982)
WHO FILMED THIS?
I wasn't alive back when this was made, but my parents have a vidoetape of it. I found it and popped it in the VCR, and was surprised at what I saw. First of all, you can't even see half the workout because the camera man practically shoves the camera in the poor women's legs and rear ends! If anyone wanted to DO the workout, they would have been confused since you can't see what the girls are doing. It also doesn't help that the girls almost seem to be doing this erotic dance-thing in it. Seriously, is this a workout or a porno for twelve-year old boys hitting puberty?
