Puerto Rican actress Adria Arjona has starred in several big-budget movies in the last decade. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Arjona was raised in Mexico City until age 12. Although she moved to the United States at 12, she has always had a passion for acting. Unsurprisingly, after moving to New York City at 18, she studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. With growing movie credits, Adria Arjona plays Madison Figueroa Masters, Glen Powell’s love interest in the 2023 romantic black comedy Hit Man. Since its release, it has enjoyed exceptional reviews and ratings from...

“Hit Man” director Richard Linklater knew Glen Powell was a movie star the moment the young actor, with no profile, walked in to audition for “Everybody Wants Some” almost a decade ago. Linklater explained what makes the Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio movie stars go beyond their good looks and acting ability, but their charisma and how we are drawn to them.
“You look at Brad Pitt, ‘Oh, I want to hang out with him,’” said Linklater. “They attract you, you’ll follow them somewhere. You want to be wherever, whatever they’re doing. Some personalities have that quality, most don’t… Glen does.”
Linklater would need every ounce of Powell’s star power to pull off “Hit Man,” a sexy screwball comedy in which the audience is rooting for Madison (Adria Arjona) and Powell’s Ron to be together, but who do some questionable things to get their happy ending.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hit Man.] Hit Man is the movie everyone is talking about. In his latest dynamite role, Glen Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a college professor who becomes a fake hitman for the local police department. He takes down would-be criminals who have their eyes on murder. Gary’s life gets turned upside down when he meets a beautiful “client” named Madison (Adria Arjona), who wants him to kill her estranged husband. They quickly get caught up in a passionate affair. But here’s the catch: Madison falls for Ron, one of Gary’s debonair hitman personas. Gary’s secret gets out, but these two just can’t stay away from each other. After some much-needed confessions and intense hijinks, Madison and Gary get their happily ever after. Since they make such a great team, much to the credit of Powell and Arjona’s electric ...

Netflix and Richard Linklater certainly make for peculiar bedfellows. Where every other Netflix exclusive feels like it was concocted by an algorithm and designed to have maximum appeal, Linklater has been perfectly happy to direct films for a niche market these past 30-plus years. Even at his most commercial, with a film like "School of Rock," you get the sense the eccentric Texan auteur is making movies that speaks to his interests first and foremost.
Yet, somehow, Linklater has now found himself releasing back-to-back films for the streaming giant. The first of them, 2022's "Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood" — a rotoscope-style animated feature where segments inspired by the filmmaker's real childhood in 1960s Houston are seamlessly integrated with a fictional story about a young boy being recruited by NASA for an off-the-books space mission — reads like the opposite of what studios feel constitutes an easy sell. It plays that way,...

How often do you see a film that doesn’t put a foot wrong? I’m talking about Richard Linklater’s Hit Man here, which is, by far, the most exciting film that I’ve seen in recent times. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that there’s not a single dull second in this dark comedy, which is co-produced and co-written by Glenn Powell, who also aces the title role. Even though it seems like the part is tailor-made for a certain Ryan Gosling, Powell makes it his own and hits it out of the park. What further helps is his stunning chemistry with Adria Arjona, who plays Madison. While the story, which is loosely based on the life of fake hitman Gary Johnson, is not particularly hard to follow, Linklater puts a philosophical spin on it, which only enhances the whole thing. The director’s signature style of deftly written,...

One conversation around “Hit Man,” our movie contender to watch this week, is mostly about how it should have gotten a legitimate theatrical release and not been a streamer play for Netflix, where its impact will likely be lessened. It’s supposed to be a star turn for Glen Powell, and the type of charisma-driven indie-ish romantic comedy/thriller that people say they wish there were more of in theaters.
But what about the movie itself? Well, it’s a darkly funny based-on-a-true-story charmer, with Powell playing a mild-mannered man who has a gig posing as a hitman to entrap people in murder-for-hire plots for the police. But things get complicated when he falls in love with a “client” (Adria Arjona) who hires him to off her abusive husband. Powell is a long-shot contender for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (with director Richard Linklater), but even if this ends...

“Hit Man” is the kind of movie that 25 years ago could have made $200 million at the box office on a budget of two percent of that. Now, Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s romantic thriller-comedy is going straight to Netflix after traditional studios balked at giving it a theatrical release.
In an interview with the BBC, Linklater attributes that change to studios being afraid to take even small risks on adult-oriented dramas.
“You don’t get fired for doing a sequel or an origin story, something that already exists,” the Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” director said. “You don’t get in trouble for what’s obvious and commercial. What changed is that films got greenlit by the marketing department and then it’s become really safe choices.”

Exclusive: John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in a recurring role. He joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy and Taylor Selé.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hawkes has been cast as ‘Sebastian Hyde,’ a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.

A raft of new films, from Challengers to Hit Man, have shown the importance and popularity of desire on screen
The success of Hit Man, Richard Linklater’s new comedy that has garnered glowing reviews heralding Glen Powell’s emergence as a true movie star, largely boils down to one factor: illicit attraction. It’s the kind that powers fantasies and a good portion of human behavior, whether we’d like to admit it or not.
There’s the pull of Powell’s Gary, a nerdy thirtysomething psychology professor in New Orleans, moonlighting as an undercover impersonator of hired killers, trying on different, more confident identities for size. There’s the longstanding, vicarious thrill of watching ethically dubious protagonists flitter through a well-oiled crime caper. And most especially, there’s the heat between Gary, in disguise as a suave hitman, and Adria Arjona’s Madison, a potential client with whom...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on June 6th, reviewing “Hit Man,” featuring Glen Powell (also co-writer) and directed by Richard Linklater (“School of Rock”). Streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Gary Johnson (Powell) is a professor of philosophy at the University of New Orleans. While helping the police on the side in investigation techniques, he is asked to go undercover as a hit man, mostly to coerce folks into getting busted for trying to hire him. When Madison (Adria Arjona) solicits his services, his attraction to her throws him off the undercover gig, and his subsequent relationship with her complicates matters further. When fellow cop Jasper (Austin Amelio) starts to suspect something, Gary’s cover is about to be compromised.
“Hit Man” is streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th. Featuring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Retta, Austin Amelio and Evan Holtzman.

One of the most talked-about action flicks of this year, Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, deserves all the hype it’s getting. Loosely based on a 2001 article by Skip Hollandsworth, the film is about Gary Johnson, a Texas man who was famous for his undercover persona as a fake hitman. Linklater’s latest movie proves that he’s much more than the Before trilogy, and this movie is also a wake-up call for Hollywood in many ways. It’s not necessary to play it safe when you’ve got a solid script on your hands, and that’s what makes a movie click with the audience. In this article, we’re talking about the ensemble cast and the characters they play in this Netflix movie.

The words “true story” are always a curious thing to see at the beginning of a film. Sometimes the term is applied to sober-eyed dramas that seek to convince you they’re nearly documentaries. Think of your Spotlights and All the President’s Mens. More often than not though, the phrase is used as a marketing gimmick for stories where the word “truth” is an abstraction. Think Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Loosely based on the real-life of Gary Johnson, the Netflix film follows the story of a part-time professor and a part-time pretend hit man for the police, but his life completely changes when a beautiful woman comes to him to have her husband killed.

The femme fatale is a figure that dates back centuries. In Greek mythology there were The Sirens, whose song dragged sailors to the depths of the seas, as well as Clytemnestra — wife, seductress, and ultimately murderer of King Agamemnon. Even Eve can be considered one for luring Adam into eating the forbidden fruit. But it was motion pictures that elevated the archetype to common nomenclature, starting at the form’s inception with characters played by actresses like Greta Garbo and Louise Brooks, then flourishing in the ‘40s and ‘50s with the popularity of pulp crime narratives.
Bombshells like Rita Hayworth and Barbara Stanwyck came to define the femme fatale, with directors like Charles Vidor and Billy Wilder wielding their strength against the hapless men who populate their films. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw a revitalization of the character type with the rise of erotic thrillers. Glenn Close and Sharon Stone...

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.

Granted, there was little to no doubt remaining in anyone’s head after his breakout turn in Top Gun: Maverick, but in Hit Man, his charisma is so white hot and old-school in that true movie star way that he should rocket to the top of everyone’s young leading man list. Richard Linklater’s new film, Hit Man, showcases a refreshing spin on the archetypal hitman narrative. Instead of following a conventional killer, the story centers on Gary Johnson (played by Glen Powell), a philosophy professor who moonlights as an undercover hitman for the police. This intriguing character blend sets up a narrative rich in psychological complexities and relationship dynamics. Crafting Intricate Characters Adria Arjona, who plays Madison Masters, shared how she connected instantly with Powell on set. She remarked, I’ve had such an incredible time working with Glen; we really clicked from the beginning. It’s a joy to be on set...

Richard Linklater is opening up about the hurdles to producing his latest movie, “Hit Man,” saying that studios initially “really didn’t want to make the film.”
In a new interview with the BBC, the celebrated director of “Dazed and Confused” and the “Before” trilogy said that he and Glen Powell — who stars in the film and co-wrote the script — worked on the film “very independently.”
“Glen and I wrote it speculatively and we didn’t get paid anything, we just tried to get the film made,” he told the BBC. “We really felt we were onto something, we felt we had written a film noir, a crime film that’s also a screwball comedy about a couple that you’re rooting to be together, but I think they wanted it to be just one thing.”

“When did our professor get hot?” This is a query posed by one enterprising student in a psychology 101 seminar to another. In that exact moment, they’re watching their part-time instructor, a previously nebbish Glen Powell, begin acting like… well, how you might expect Glen Powell to act if you’ve seen Top Gun: Maverick and Everybody Wants Some!! (although in those flicks he never was so cocksure while explaining the societal virtues in summary execution).
And honestly, you cannot help but feel like those surprised coeds. Not in regard to realizing Powell is hot. There’s a reason or two a movie like Anyone But You can gross $200 million in this moviegoing economy, and it’s not the script. Nay, what is realized between the opening moments of Richard Linklater’s Hit Man—where Powell introduces us to a Gary Johnson who is more in line with what you...

Glen Powell has been acting since he was a kid but did not get that required breakout role for a long time. Many fans didn’t know he was in Spy Kids 3D, The Great Debaters, and The Dark Knight Rises. He also had supporting roles in acclaimed films in the 2010s like Hidden Figures and Everybody Wants Some!!.

Powell got his much-deserved breakout role as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. The character’s arc was parallel to the arc of Val Kilmer’s Hangman in the first Top Gun. The two actors ended up in an elevator after shooting wrapped on the film. Looking at Powell’s luggage cart, Kilmer had a funny reaction that made Powell incredibly happy and proud.

The many nuances of adulthood aren’t on display in movies anymore, “Hit Man” director Richard Linklater told the BBC on Thursday. “Traditional” studios turned the movie, which debuted on Netflix in May, in part because “there isn’t ‘adult’ in movies anymore,” he added.
When he and the movie’s co-director, co-writer, and star Glen Powell got together to discuss the project, Linklater told told him “it’s gonna have sex, it’ll be passionate, it’ll be carnal, the desire that drives everything.”
“Glen’s character starts off very dispassionate, but by the end of the movie he’s a different guy, he’s discovered passion, and the movie has this strong chemistry and sexuality,” Linklater told the outlet. “I think what’s out of fashion, people say there’s no sex in movies anymore, but there isn’t ‘adult’ in movies anymore, as sexuality in movies equals adult.

Adria Arjona’s first appearance in Hit Man is a classic femme fatale entrance: A mysterious woman walks through the door of a café and recruits our hero Gary (Glen Powell) to do a dirty job for her. Of course, in this case, things are a little more complicated. The job is a murder, but the hero isn’t a killer; he’s a psychology professor running undercover sting operations for the New Orleans Police Department. And he’s going to try to convince her to change her mind.
Look a little closer at Arjona’s Madison, however, and you’ll see that there’s more than initially meets the eye. “What we were asking Adria to do is just be a real person,” director Richard Linklater told Netflix. “She isn’t the Black Widow. She’s just really complex like all of us. We meet her at her darkest moment.

Exclusive: Logan Browning (Dear White People) has been cast in a series regular role in Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video series Criminal. She joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins and Kadeem Hardison.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Browning will play Jenny, an Internal Affairs detective with a dry sense of humor and an absurdly calm demeanor. She presents as an even-tempered woman who appears to be without a care in the world. Jenny is very smart; her father was a criminal and she loves her job — which gives her the right to question, harass, terrify and imprison cops all day long. Jenny was raised with Leo (Hunnam) as her playmate/buddy/blood brother for life.

"We never wanted that character to fall into a trope." Netflix has revealed a fun making of featurette for Richard Linklater's beloved Hit Man movie – the incredible new "hitman" comedy set in Texas. It will be streaming on Netflix later this week. The film first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, with a rapturous premiere where audiences went nuts for (read my full review). It also went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, London and Sundance. From the Oscar-nominated writer / director Richard Linklater, starring the great Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a "hit man" meets his match with a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. It also stars Austin Amelio, Retta,...

Exclusive: As his acclaimed comedic thriller Hit Man approaches its June 7 release on Netflix, filmmaker Richard Linklater may have identified his next project, as sources tell Deadline that he’s in development on a film called Blue Moon.
Taking its name from the 1934 ballad written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the film follows Hart as he attempts to save face while celebrating his former partner Rodgers’ great success on the night of his musical Oklahoma!‘s Broadway opening. While it’s believed that this will end up being Linklater’s next film, that’s not entirely clear at present.
We’re told that Robert Kaplow — co-writer of Linklater’s 2008 film Me and Orson Welles — penned the script for Blue Moon and that Linklater will produce the project alongside his manager John Sloss.
