Rita Lakin, the boundary-pushing TV writer and showrunner who worked on Peyton Place, The Doctors and Mod Squad and created series including The Rookies and Flamingo Road, has died. She was 93.
Lakin died March 23 of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Novato, California, her son, writer-producer Howard Lakin, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Before her, they hadn’t thought about writing television from a woman’s point of view,” he noted.
Lakin also penned a groundbreaking 1975 episode of CBS’ Medical Center centered on a transgender character; served as a showrunner/executive producer on the 1976-77 CBS drama Executive Suite; and wrote such popular telefilms as 1971’s Death Takes a Holiday and 1973’s Message to My Daughter and A Summer Without Boys.
After she met some people from Texas whom she didn’t like, she rejected an offer in 1978 to create the pilot for a show about an oil family in the Lone Star State.

The show was immensely popular with viewers but got mixed reviews from critics. Some called it “Jiggle TV” because it emphasized the sex appeal of its female cast.

While the math is way off – there’s no more than one hundred, tops – The Night of a Thousand Cats (1972) offers 63 minutes (!) of outlandish fun, decadent behavior, and a proclivity towards the absurd. Just don’t expect a story from this Mexican release; it seems around thirty minutes were cut for the North American release, leaving behind a mess of the rest that is nevertheless very entertaining.
Released in Mexico in early August, Cats didn’t arrive stateside until November of ’74, where it came and went pretty quickly. Reviews were…well, what do you think? There still really hasn’t been a reconsideration of the film all these years later; it remains hanging out just below the surface of modern horror culture.

The creative forces behind AppleTV+ docuseries Visible: Out on Television, which Apple announced will launch Feb. 14, called the five-part series of hour-long installments a “love letter to the power of television” in moving the needle toward acceptance in the Lgbtq movement.

It was a good morning for “The Morning Show” on Monday as both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon received Golden Globe nominations for their performances in the Apple TV+ drama. As the co-leads of the series, they were both nominated in Best Drama Actress, becoming the first duo this decade to take up two slots in one year in this category. The last co-stars to do so were Lorraine Bracco and Edie Falco for “The Sopranos,” who were nominated together three years in a row from 1999-2001. “The Morning Show” becomes the ninth series in history to accomplish this at the Golden Globes. The question now becomes whether Aniston and Witherspoon will cancel each other out, leading to one of their competitors winning.

This week’s big new studio flick actually feels like a holdover from the Summer, with its big splashy action sequences and loopy, loose attitude (not at all one of the somber end of the year bits of serious cinema). Oh, as for the “new” part, this one’s roots are pretty old, well over 45 years. It could be called a reboot of a reboot, all going back to an iconic TV show that ran from 1976 to 1981. This hour-long camp caper fantasy was in rerun limbo until a star-packed feature film upgrade hit the screens in 2000, with a sequel three years later. But unlike other TV shows turned film franchises like Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, which just keep “chuggin’ along”, it pretty much stalled out, aside from an 8 episode TV series (hmmm from the tube to the movies twice then back) in 2011. Now, just a few weeks since the...

The costumes that the “Charlie’s Angels” trio have worn over the years have always been functional but fashionable. In the TV show starring Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson, which ran from 1976 to 1981, and then in the movie franchise of the early 2000s with Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore, the functionality always fit the fashion of the time. In the latest incarnation of the franchise — written and directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also plays Bosley — with Kristen Stewart as Sabina, Naomi Scott as Elena and Ella Balinska as Jane — there isn’t much throwback to previous “Charlie’s Angels” productions, but costume designer Kym Barrett says that the spirit is certainly there.

“I think women can do anything,” an undercover Kristen Stewart purrs in the very first line of “Charlie’s Angels,” thereby setting the tone — and the priority — for Elizabeth Banks’ rousing remake of this long-running franchise.
Gone are the Angels dancing in their underwear, as McG directed Cameron Diaz in the first film. No more ladies doting on an aging Bosley, as they did in every episode of the TV show. Angels 3.0 are doing it for themselves.
Well, not themselves exactly, since Bosley is still their boss. But in Banks’ world, the name is really more of a rank, “like lieutenant,” her character explains. There are many Bosleys now, including ones played by Banks and (an underused) Djimon Hounsou, as well as the Og embodied by Patrick Stewart.

Is Elizabeth Banks ready for the world to experience “Charlie’s Angels”?
“It’s a lot of pressure,” Banks told Variety at Monday’s premiere of the film in Los Angeles. “It’s very scary. I’ve seen the movie with an audience, and so I know the movie works, that the audience loves it and goes along on the ride.”
“It’s really funny. I think it’s very surprising for people and that was the job,” she continued. “And so I feel like my part’s done, and now it’s out of my control, which I hate.”

It’s well known around these parts of my irrational fear of arachnids – in real life, that is. On film, however, they are (unfairly or not) one of my favorite villains. And yes, I say villains, because dammit they bite and kill people; sure, it’s their “nature”, but mine is breathing and not being paralyzed and/or spun in webbing like so much human Saran Wrap. Okay, now that that’s out of the way, we can talk about Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo (1977), a fun TV movie with more creepy crawlers than you can shake a stick at. (A 10 foot stick if you’re smart.)

Anyone familiar with this column knows my deep-rooted affection for Ms. Kate Jackson; I espoused her many virtues when I covered Satan’s School for Girls (you can ponder my musings here), and I promise (warn?) you I will do so again as I discuss the couple-in-a-house-is-met-with-animosity-from-a-possible-ghost telefilm, Death at Love House (1976), aka How Much Is That Dead Actress In the Window?
Originally broadcast as The ABC Friday Night Movie on Friday, September 3rd, Love House was up against The CBS Friday Night Movies and NBC trotted out The Rockford Files/Quincy M.E. for folks like mine. So who won out? We all did! I loved Rockford and Quincy. Okay, CBS probably lost. But if you were looking for some charming stars doing charming things in a charming manor with a hint of danger, look no further than ABC.

Patrick Stewart is currently in final talks to Sony Pictures’ rebooted “woke” Charlies Angels.
The X-Men actor is said to be up for one of the many positions of Bosley in the new reiteration. In the film, Charlie Townsend’s detective agency has now become a security and intelligence firm. The name Bosley is to be used as a codeword for the agents set up at the firm within individual branches who deal with the Angels.
Elizabeth Banks will be at the helm of the film in which she also co-wrote. She will also be playing one of the many Bosleys. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska will be playing the roles of the Angels.

Sure, bees can be scary under the right circumstances; say, you’re allergic for instance, or you accidentally knock over a hive, or someone fills your mattress with them. But do you know what’s even scarier? Family. This brings us to Killer Bees (1974), an interesting yet generically titled TV movie that has more to do with the ties that bind than the stings that kill.
Originally broadcast on Tuesday, February 26th as an ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, Killer Bees had killer competition with CBS’ smash lineup of M*A*S*H/Hawaii Five-o and NBC had their World Premiere Movie. Any guesses as to who won that night? No matter, because ABC had a secret weapon in Kate Jackson, my favorite Angel and first boyhood crush; she is more than enough reason for a recommendation from moi.

Updated with details from Deadine’s interview with Holland.
Netflix’s head of original programming took her small town girl tale to the stage of the Television Critics Association press tour, where she made her inaugural appearance.
Cindy Holland opened her session with a personal confession: “I grew up a nerdy little kid in Nebraska,” she said, as she flashed an elementary school image on the projection screen behind her — as if in evidence.
The head of programing for the television industry’s $8 billion powerhouse said she searched to find role models in the TV shows of that era — perhaps Cher, minus the Bob Mackie glittery gowns.
“The first time I truly saw myself on television was Charlie’s Angels,” Holland said. “There, among the feathered hair, there she was as Sabrina Duncan.”
Kate Jackson’s character — a pantsuit- and turtle-neck-wearing, Pinto-driving detective — seemed not to care that she was different from everyone else.

The rumors have finally been quashed. Kristen Stewart and Naomi Scott are officially confirmed to star in Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot, with newcomer British actress Ella Balinska completing the crime-fighting trio. Banks is pulling double duty on the Sony Pictures pic, serving as the film’s director and playing Bosley.
Jay Basu and Banks penned the script based on earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas.
The film will follow a new next generation of Angels working for the mysterious Charlie. Since the original films based on the 1970s TV series, The Townsend Agency has grown considerably and gone global, providing security and intelligence services to a variety of private clients with offices and highly trained teams worldwide. This film focuses on one of those teams.

William Castle is a name synonymous with hucksterism and showmanship, more so than the quality of the films he directed. Which isn’t really fair, it’s just that his gimmicky pieces like The House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler (both 1959), with skeletons flying through the audience and buzzers placed under theatre seats respectively, overshadowed an unsubtle but solid directorial style when unburdened by showbiz trappings. Such is the case with The Night Walker (1964), a Robert Bloch (Psycho) scripted thriller that delves into the dream world in effective ways.
Released in late December by Universal, The Night Walker received some good notices but left audiences sleepy. Perhaps the perceived combination of shock master Bloch and schlock meister Castle didn’t match what made it to the screen; indeed it’s a different tale told in a different manner than either was used to telling, yet has a sometimes eerie...

Warning: if you’re not a Kate Jackson fan, today’s column may not work in your favor. Plus, we probably shouldn’t hang out. I first fell in love with Ms. Jackson (if you’re nasty) when I was six. At the time, she was starring on Charlie’s Angels, along with Farrah Blah-Blah and Jaclyn What’s Her Name, but I think maybe I liked Kate best. Her long black hair, radiant smile, and raspy sing song drawl mesmerized me for the remainder of that show’s run. But for fans of horror, Kate worked with Dan Curtis on Dark Shadows, before landing one of the leads in Satan’s School for Girls (1973), producer Aaron Spelling’s venture into one of the ‘70s greatest capitalist ventures, Satanic Panic. It’s a fun romp; and spoiler alert - Kate is great in it. (She’s just the most, don’t you think?...

Forty years ago today, Charlie's Angels hit nationwide TV screens and "put three women in the forefront," according to former star Jaclyn Smith.
In an exclusive interview excerpted from People's special issue Celebrate the '70s: 1976 Edition, Smith, who played Kelly Garrett on the 1970s series and was the only Angel to star on all five seasons, reflected on how the show changed her – and audiences across America.
"It was groundbreaking. It was about three emotionally and financially independent women. We shot at beautiful locations with fancy fast cars, and they cared about each other, so there was a heart to the show,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn is talks with Sony Pictures to write the screenplay for the movie reboot of Charlie's Angels. Auburn is writing a new script for Charlie's Angels, after Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote an earlier draft for the film.
In September it was announced that Elizabeth Banks will direct the project and will produce with her husband Max Handelman.
The original 1970s television series followed three female detectives (Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith) working for a mysterious man named Charlie (whose voice was only heard). Back in 2000 Sony produced the first film version which starred Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, which grossed $264 million worldwide. The 2003 sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” reeled in $259 million. McG helmed both films.
What do you think? Do we really need another Charlie's Angels reboot.
