I was fortunate enough to secure a ticket to the much-coveted rendezvous with screen goddess Meryl Streep. She was in town to receive the Honorary Palme d'Or. Herewith 10 of the most memorable moments from her interview panel.
What did you do after winning the Palme d'Or?
"I stayed up until three in the morning at Quentin Dupieux's film party, so I'm a bit disoriented. I really enjoyed the opening film and talked a lot about it with Quentin."

The Cannes Film Festival is many things: A prestigious platform for the best of world cinema, a massive industry event where film acquisitions get made, a testament to the French film industry’s classism and rampant sexual abuse. But more than anything, it’s one of the world’s greatest photo opps.
Sure, sure, everyone wants the Palme D’or. But even more people would kill to get seen on the iconic Cannes red carpet, and get their picture snapped by the hordes of press that camp on the Croisette. Some of the world’s most glamorous and beautiful celebrities can be seen on the steps outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès every year posing for the cameras, and while it’s not quite the fashion moment that the Met Gala is, it still offers a great opportunity for us pleebs to gawk at some particularly shiny stars in all of their finery.

My, my, nobody could resist it, and seems like Mamma Mia is getting back to the cinema screens once again. Six years after the first movie’s sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hit the theaters, the franchise gets an exciting update as Meryl Streep confirms that the third film is supposedly already in the works.
The actress also revealed that she’s expected to be back in the next installment, though, despite the raving reaction that the announcement will get soon, this news in particular can cause some sort of controversy that the creators have to deal with.
During her visit to the Cannes Film Festival where she received an Honorary Palme D’Or at the opening ceremony, Streep spilled the tea in one of her interviews saying that she has a conversation with Mamma Mia’s creators on her to-do list concerning the actress’ possible return to...

‘Megalopolis’ Is Talk Of Cannes
A more straightforward affair: After a tense build-up shaped by endless rumors of an imminent #MeToo expose and a potential labor strike, the first week of this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been a more straightforward affair. The most controversial event so far has been Thursday evening’s premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-anticipated Megalopolis. The critical response has been predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows. Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated, and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the...

Greta Gerwig is making history one after another! Having broken several records with Barbie, including the biggest opening weekend for a female-directed film, Greta Gerwig becomes the first American female director to serve as jury president at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Not only that, but at 40, she became the youngest person to take on the role since Sofia Loren, who was 31 in 1966.
As the head of this year’s competition jury, it is only fitting that Greta Gerwig puts her best fashion foot forward on the red carpet, choosing to wear stunning designer ensembles from Armani, Saint Laurent, and Maison Margiela.

Netflix unveiled the trailer for “Ultraman: Rising” (premiering at Annecy June 12 and streaming June 14), the animated feature from first-time director Shannon Tindle, who re-imagines the legendary anime franchise from Tsuburaya Productions as an action-packed, heartwarming ode to parenthood.
With Tokyo under siege from rising kaiju attacks, Dodgers baseball superstar Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of rogue superhero Ultraman from his father (Gedde Watanabe) while signing with the Giants. But he has trouble balancing his passion for baseball and his family obligation to be Ultraman. Then, when forced to raise a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl, Sato must confront his huge ego to protect her and Japan from destruction.
Tindle first conceived of his film as an original parental superhero story (“Made in Japan”). That was back in 2001 when he was a character designer on “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.” He later developed it...

Francis Ford Coppola had quite the tussle with Paramount to cast Al Pacino in the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather. Pacino was Coppola’s favorite, while the studio was against his casting due to his height. When Coppola finally convinced the studio to cast him, the Scarface actor was skeptical of the film after his first day of filming. He revealed in a 2023 interview that he and co-star Diane Keaton feared for their careers on that day.
Al Pacino was skeptical of The Godfather after the first day of shooting
However, Al Pacino’s assumptions about the film were proven wrong when it went on to become an industry hit. It also launched the career of the actor who became one of the greatest living actors of our time.

Only Murders In The Building Heads to Hollywood in New Season 4 Teaser - Main Image
Disney has dropped the first teaser trailer of the Emmy-winning mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building:
The trailer confirms what we already know: Season 4 will see our amateur true crime podcasters Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) hit the streets of Los Angeles, as they find a studio interested in bringing Only Murders to the big screen.
In the cliffhanger finale of Season 3, our amateur sleuths join an after-party to celebrate the triumphant opening night of Oliver’s murder mystery musical Death Razzle Dazzle. Not long after they close the case of Ben Glenroy’s elevator accident, they will be confronted soon by the “hot, fresh, dead body” of Charles’s friend and long-time stunt double Sazz Pataki (played by Jane Lynch).

Uma Thurman has been to Cannes more times than she can remember, either to pledge support for the glamorous annual charity event amfAR or with films as diverse as the genteel Merchant-Ivory period film The Golden Bowl (2000) and Quentin Tarantino’s ultraviolent Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), in which she reprised her badass role as The Bride. The film that propelled her to stardom, Pulp Fiction, won the Palme d’Or there, and Thurman hasn’t forgotten what it did for her. This year, she’s back with Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, the kind of smart, character-based indie on which she earned her spurs.
Deadline: How did you get involved with Oh, Canada?
Uma Thurman: Really, I just got the call through my agents to read a Paul Schrader script and meet with him. I’m so glad I did. I love Paul Schrader.
Deadline: Did you know him already?...

The cast of Only Murders in the Building has become more and more star-studded over the years, and as it approaches its fourth season, the starpower has gone through the roof. The third season recruited Meryl Streep, who remains on board for Season 4, Paul Rudd, Jesse Williams, Ashley Park and more. The murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), who played Charles-Haden Savage’s stunt double on Brazzos at the end of Season 3 provided the cliffhanger to transition into a fourth installment.
Molly Shannon, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Zack Galifianakis and Kumail Nanjiani were already confirmed as new cast members for the fourth season of the cozy murder mystery, but that wasn’t the end of new additions. The cast and creatives behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hit the red carpet for its Cannes Film Festival debut on Wednesday.
Stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth both went with surprising picks for their style for the film’s Cannes premiere.

The platinum necklace, a centerpiece for the star’s look, features diamonds of more than 68 total carats. Rounding out her look are 18-karat white gold diamond earrings and two platinum diamond rings from Tiffany & Co.

The tagline for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival should probably be “Back to the Future.” Indeed, four Hollywood legends who first established themselves in the 1970s as part of the “New Hollywood,” and haven’t been back to festival in decades, are front and center on the Croisette this year.
At the fest’s opening ceremony on Tuesday night, three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or, 35 years after her only prior visit to the fest. "Only Murders in the Building" has earned pretty much universal acclaim for its first three seasons, including an 8 out of 10 /Film review from Josh Spiegel for season 3. It's also been responsible for Meryl Streep's return to TV, a weirdly catchy original Steve Martin tune (or two), and an official companion podcast called "Only Murders in the Pod." Plus, of course, the show has won four Primetime Emmys and counting. So what's next for the series? In a word: Hollywood.

The usual Cannes opening night ritual — introduce the jury and its president (auteur Greta Gerwig) who will weigh in on 22 competition titles — was co-opted by the larger-than-life presence of Meryl Streep, resplendent in white. She graciously accepted the Palme d’Or from a sincere Juliette Binoche, resplendent in red, who wrote her heartfelt tribute from one artist to another.
“You changed how women are portrayed,” Binoche said, crying. The two actresses were well-matched. And the black tie audience at the Palais gave Streep a lengthy, sustained ovation, which clearly both delighted and embarrassed her. She pretended to leave.
That ovation repeated Wednesday at the packed Salle Debussy, as Streep, a little worse for wear after debating the merits of Quentin Dupieux’s acting comedy “The Second Act” at the Cannes after-party, answered questions from Didier Allouch. “I didn’t go to bed until 3 talking about the amazing film,” she said.

Cannes Film Festival officials are notoriously strict when it comes to enforcing protocols for black-tie ensembles on guests before they are allowed to ascend the iconic Palais steps. However, at Tuesday’s glamorous opening night ceremony, one guest managed to sneak by security on four legs sporting nothing but a coat of fur. But at least he nailed the black-and-white part.

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep revealed her admiration for actresses who move into production having achieved fame on the big screen in an onstage conversation Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch kicked off her mandate last year with a banner edition that saw the premieres of Oscar-winners “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall.”
Ever since, Knobloch — who is the former boss of WarnerMedia France and Germany — has been discreetly collaborating with festival director Thierry Frémaux to lure U.S. studios and talent on the Croisette. And while the film business’ state of mind is rather gloomy, Cannes opened on a vibrant note Tuesday night with a tribute to Meryl Streep, who hadn’t been at Cannes since “A Cry in the Dark,” for which she won best actress in 1989. The ceremony also celebrated “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who is presiding over the competition jury.
In an interview with Variety at the start of the festival, a cheerful Knobloch said the presence of Gerwig, Streep and “Call My Agent!” star Camille Cottin (who...

“The roles are wonderful now, I think, for women, and so many women are producing for themselves,” marveled Meryl Streep at a Cannes Film Festival “rendez-vous” held on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after the legendary actress collected an honorary Palme d’Or at the fest’s opening night ceremony. (She reported that she didn’t go to sleep until 3 a.m.) “I’m so in awe of the ones who have done that — Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman] and Natalie Portman. Everyone has their own production company!” The mother of four and grandmother of five added with a chuckle, “I had a production company: making babies! I didn’t want to get calls after seven o’clock at night, so I didn’t do that.”

Reflecting on her illustrious career at Cannes Film Festival, Oscar winner Meryl Streep opened up about one of her most iconic on-screen moments — the shampoo scene from “Out of Africa.”
The 1986 Sydney Pollack film starred Streep and Robert Redford as a baroness and a big game hunter who fall in love in a lush desert romance. In what is considered one of the most intimate moments in movie history, Redford gives Streep a steamy salon scrub in a South African river. The actress went so far as to call the moment a sex scene.
“It’s a sex scene in a way, because it’s so intimate. We’ve seen so many scenes of people fucking, but we don’t see that loving touch, that care,” Streep said to big applause during a conversation at Cannes’ Théâtre Debussy.

Meryl Streep with her Honorary Palme d'Or Photo: Richard Mowe The undoubted star turn at the opening of the 77th Cannes Film Festival was Hollywood royalty Queen of the Croisette Meryl Streep who received an honorary Palme d’Or as part of the opening ceremony.
Streep, 74, who has the kind of regal presence in a flowing ivory gown that commands attention, did her show her tremulous and emotional side - partly because Juliette Binoche, charged with bestowing the award, almost broke down in tears at being in the presence of Her Majesty or as she described her “an international treasure”.
“When I see you on the screen, I don’t see you …” gushed Binoche. “Where does it come from? Were you born like this? I don’t know, but there’s a believer in you, a believer that allows me to believe. You changed the way we look at cinema.

The stormy clouds outside the Palais might have dampened some spirits as the credits rolled on the opening night film of the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Or maybe it was the movie itself.
“The Second Act,” Quentin Dupieux’s talky French comedy about the making of the first movie directed by AI, mustered a lukewarm 3.5-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night in Cannes.
Dupieux attedned the premiere along with his French cast of Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon and Raphaël Quenard. The four actors all politely stood as a camera quickly passed by through the tepid applause.

Updated with ovation for The Second Act: The Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday evening with a joyously female vibe as Meryl Streep received the Honorary Palme d’Or from an emotional Juliette Binoche and Greta Gerwig became the first female U.S. director to serve as jury president across its 77 editions.
The ceremony at the Palais led into the festival’s opening-night film The Second Act from Quentin Dupieux. The French pic, starring Léa Seydoux and Louis Garrel, received a lukewarm 3-minute, 46-second standing ovation from the audience.
Earlier, resplendent in a long sequin gown, Gerwig said she was still coming to terms with the fact that she was presiding over the Cannes jury.
“I hardly know what to say… This is holy to me; art is sacred, film is sacred… I cannot believe that I’m getting the chance to spend 10 days in this house of worship.”

The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is notoriously strict about its black-tie dress code (one man in a blue tuxedo who committed the fashion travesty of wearing white socks was almost turned away). But on Tuesday night, France welcomed a national hero to the opening night of the 77th edition — Messi, the four-legged scene-stealer from last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The canine phenom helped brighten things up even as dark clouds gathered over the Palais des Festivals, site of Cannes’ biggest premieres. Despite the foreboding weather and light drizzle, Lily Gladstone, Greta Gerwig, Omar Sy, Jane Fonda, Juliette Binoche and other stars added some glamour and sparkle to the evening.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is officially underway in the South of France as A-listers, auteurs and America’s most revered actress, Meryl Streep, converged at the Palais’ Grand Theatre Lumiere on Tuesday for a typically glamorous opening ceremony.
The anticipation was as thick as the clouds in the sky on Tuesday as rain was not the only threat hanging over the start of this year’s festival. From a possible strike and a fresh #MeToo discussion in France to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, festival officials have faced many questions in the days and hours leading up to Tuesday night. Meryl Streep, the most celebrated screen actress of her time, added another prize to her collection — one of the few that she hadn’t received already — when she was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night.
Upon being called to the stage and handed the gold-plated emblem of the city of Cannes by French actress Juliette Binoche, the 74-year-old received a thunderous 2.5-minute standing ovation from the more than 2,000 guests who packed the Grand Lumiere Theatre. Among them was Greta Gerwig, Streep’s Little Women director and this year’s Cannes jury president, who wiped away tears as Streep basked in the applause.

Before Meryl Streep could accept her honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night, she was greeted by a thunderous two-minute standing ovation. The 74-year-old Oscar winner was so overcome with emotion that she first pretended to walk off the stage, but eventually began to dance to the applause.
French star Juliette Binoche, herself emotional, presented the award to Streep, saying: “When I see you on the screen, I don’t see you … Where does it come from? Were you born like this? I don’t know, but there’s a believer in you; a believer that allows me to believe.”
Binoche called Streep “an international treasure” as she listed off many of Streep’s most beloved roles, from “Sophie’s Choice” to “Julie and Julia.” Binoche later added, “You changed the way we look at cinema.”

Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves are among the most iconic pairings of all time. Having starred together in 1994’s Speed, the two have been a fan favorite casting, with many wanting to see more of them on-screen. Unfortunately, such a miracle is yet to happen, for after starring in The Lake House (which hardly featured them together), they have never managed to work together.

Despite stating countless times that they would love to reunite on-screen, a potential Speed 3 has never happened. And if it were to ever take place, it would be even more iconic since Bullock wasn’t even the first or second choice for the role of Annie.

Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.
Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in the Beetlejuice sequel– or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight.
