Essra Mohawk, who recorded a dozen albums and saw Cyndi Lauper’s cover of her “Change of Heart” hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, died on Dec. 11 at her home in Nashville from cancer. She was 75.
A dreamy singer who described herself as a flower child, Mohawk never quite broke through to stardom. But she carved out a long career nonetheless in a highly fertile music era, performing with Frank Zappa and Jerry Garcia, among others.
She was scheduled to perform at the original Woodstock festival, but her driver took a wrong turn on the way.
“We got there in time to see the last verse of the last song of the last act of the first night, and then the stage went dark before we got to it from the parking lot,” she recalled in a 2009 video interview.
She recorded more than a dozen albums over the years.

Chuck Barris, who hosted such gleefully trashy TV hits as The Gong Show and The $1.98 Beauty Show back in the 1970s, was an interesting man, to say the least. He once worked on American Bandstand. He wrote a song that made the Top 5 during the peak of Beatlemania. He created The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game in the ’60s. And the rumor, of course, was that Barris had been a CIA assassin at various times in different parts of the world. That claim was part of his autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which George Clooney turned into a movie in 2002. Though Barris was still alive at the time (he died in 2017 at the age of 87), Clooney told us he never asked Barris whether the CIA claims were true. Janet Landgard, who accompanied Burt Lancaster on a portion of his bizarre tour of backyard swimming pools in the acclaimed 1968 drama The Swimmer, has died. She was 75.
Landgard died this week after a very brief bout with brain cancer, actor Paul Petersen told The Hollywood Reporter. She recurred as his love interest on the final three seasons of the ABC family comedy The Donna Reed Show.
On Facebook, Petersen called her “the best TV girlfriend my alternate ego, Jeff Stone, ever had. Janet was gorgeous, inside and out … a flawless Scandinavian beauty that literally stunned jaded Hollywood types into silence. We were always close no matter the time or distance.”
In Columbia Pictures’ The Swimmer — directed by Frank Perry and adapted by his then-wife, Eleanor Perry, from a John Cheever short story in The New Yorker — Landgard was memorable as Julie Ann Hooper, who used to babysit Ned Merrill’s...

Bob Barker, a television game show icon best known for his decades-long run as the original host of the “The Price Is Right,” has died of natural causes in his Hollywood Hills home, his longtime publicist Roger Neal told TheWrap. Barker was 99 years old.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest Mc who ever lived, Bob Barker has left us,” Neal said in a statement sent to TheWrap. Neal shared the news on behalf of Barker’s longtime companion Nancy Burnet.
“I am so proud of the trailblazing work [Bob] Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry, and working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,” Burnet said in a statement. “We were great friends over these 40 years. The pitch for John Musker and Rob Clements' 2002 animated feature "Treasure Planet" couldn't be simpler: "Treasure Island" in space. Made on a sizable budget of 140 million, "Treasure Planet" transformed the three-masted maritime sailing ships of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1882 novel into cosmos-dwelling, frigate-shaped spacecraft that soar on solar sails. In an effort to "hip up" the joint, Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) was turned into a rebellious, solar surfing teen, and Long John Silver (Brian Murray) didn't just have a peg leg, but multiple bionic body parts. A talking parrot became a small, shapeshifting blob. Captain Smollett was transformed into the feline humanoid Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), and the stranded Ben Gunn was turned into a malfunctioning robot named B.E.N. (Martin Short). The treasure was still treasure.
The changes were clever enough, and the designers working on "Treasure Planet" skewed heavily into steampunk, a sub-genre of sci-fi that imagined...

Running a mere 42 minutes, James Gunn's "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" has a simple premise. The alien characters Mantis (Pom Klemetieff) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) have noticed that their friend, the human Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), has been sullen of late. As aliens, they have little knowledge of Earth customs, but have put together that on Star-Lord's home planet they are about to engage in an oblique local holiday called Christmas. Mantis and Drax know that giving gifts is a central part of the holiday, and they elect to go to Earth in secret to acquire the ultimate present: Kevin Bacon (Kevin Bacon). Evidently, Star-Lord, who was kidnapped from Earth as a boy in the 1980s, has spoken at length about Bacon and his talents, and Mantis and Drax think nothing of kidnapping the actor and putting him in a box as a favor to their friend.

Chuck Barris was a game show host and TV personality probably best known for creating "The Dating Game," "The Gong Show," and other stalwart (and often sensationalistic and/or lascivious) staples of the 1970s TV landscape. Barris knew that catering to the lowest common denominator meant big business, and approached each one of shows with that ethos; Who knows a man better? His wife or his secretary? Let's find out on "Three's a Crowd." How well do married couples really know each other? Enter "The Newlywed Game." Want to choose a partner based on your future mother-in-law? Why not appear on "How's...

Exclusive: Eager to bring Justin Timberlake back into the Apple TV + fold after the strong results of the Fisher Stevens-directed dramatic film Palmer in January, Apple won an auction and acquired the script to develop an hour-long drama series that will have Timberlake playing Gong Show host Chuck Barris. The untitled series will be based on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, a 1984 memoir in which Barris made suspect claims that being the zany Gong Show host and creator of game shows like The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game was cover for his real job: CIA assassin who took out enemies of the state in the 1960s and 1970s. The book was turned into a film that George Clooney directed with Sam Rockwell playing Barris.

ABC is reviving “The Dating Game” with a new celebrity twist and Zooey Deschanel and Michael Bolton at the helm, the network announced Thursday.
“The Celebrity Dating Game” has been picked up for eight one-hour episodes at the network, and is described as a “wry wink at modern dating with a star-studded roster of celebrity singles in their pursuit to find love.”
The new show will flip the format of the original 1960s series hosted by Jim Lange. Rather than having one contestant question three hidden suitors, the three suitors will be visible to the audience throughout the episode, and the identity of the celebrity they are attempting to woo will remain concealed until the end of the hour. Per ABC, “suitors will have the opportunity to guess the secret identity based on clues, questions and special parody performances by host Michael Bolton.”

Not every actor who tries his or her hand at directing has the chops to be a true filmmaker; in fact, very few do. But George Clooney, in the early 2000s, took to directing as if born to it. His first effort, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002), had an early Charlie Kaufman script that Clooney staged with attitude and style, getting the audience to buy into a gonzo what-if? biopic of Chuck Barris. Clooney’s sophomore effort, “Good Night, and Good Luck” (2005), vividly dramatized the war between the TV newsman Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy, with Clooney using the black-and-white cinematography to make the 1950s broadcast-news world (and everyone in it) pop. “The Ides of March” (2011) caught the postmodern cynicism of our greedy and gridlocked political culture.

Amazon Studios is set to turn the 1994 novel “The Memory Police” by Yoko Ogawa into a narrative feature, with Reed Morano directing the project and Charlie Kaufman serving as screenwriter. The news was first reported by Deadline. The National Book Award-nominated novel, an Orwellian tale of the dangers of surveillance, was recently translated and released by Pantheon Books in the English language, more than a quarter of a century after its debut in Japan.

Rockwell nails this brass, reckless character with a captivating performance of ‘cool’ energy and an eternal glaze of longing in his eyes. He is the ultimate conglomeration of shady arrogance and emotional negligence. Sam’s matchless acting style is tailored perfectly for these emotionally dimensional characters. Whether subtle or abrasive, his expressions are executed flawlessly, layered with an aching internal anguish. These seedy types of roles almost seem written for him. As the story progresses, Sam’s character, Chuck Barris, schemes his way into a life of fame without virtue--in other words, he invents reality television. The King of Rock and Roll has a double life as Elvis Presley gets animated as Agent King on upcoming Netflix series.
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, earned a black belt in Karate, indulged "Suspicious Minds," and got special agent status from President Nixon. Priscilla Presley will put all these together in the upcoming Agent King, an adult animated comedy series which will run on Netflix, according to Variety.
The series also merges concepts behind both Marvel and DC legends, and the mythology of The Gong Show's Chuck Barris, who may or may not have been an assassin for the CIA, according to the book and movie Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. In Agent King, Elvis will shake his pelvis during working hours but will transform into an undercover agent who keeps America safe.

Every Friday, we’re recommending an older movie that’s available to stream or download and worth seeing again through the lens of our current moment. We’re calling the series “Revisiting Hours” — consider this Rolling Stone’s unofficial film club. This week: Craig Lindsey on the Chuck Barris “biopic” Confessions of a Dangerous Man.
So, there’s this guy, and he spends most of his youth knocking back drinks, getting into barfights and, of course, trying to get laid. As he gets older and more established, this guy, still...

Will Arnett and Mike Myers credit their Canadian roots for their love of the eccentric talent series “The Gong Show.” “In Canada, we didn’t have as many TV stations, and cable came slowly,” said Arnett, who executive produces the ABC revival, now in its second season. “I think Canadians appreciated the absurdity of it.”
Added Myers: “It’s outsider art, because we’re an outsider country. I loved ‘The Gong Show,” I thought it was hilarious. It felt like punk rock to me.”
Under his development deal at Sony Pictures TV, Arnett was looking at a list of franchises the studio owned and we ripe for a revival. When he came across “The Gong Show,” he thought Myers might have some fun with it. He just didn’t know what.
“It was like an open [offer], who knows what he would do,” Arnett said. “If you could get Mike to do it,...

Match Game came back. The $100,000 Pyramid came back. So why did it take so long for ’70s game show sensation The Gong Show to get a reboot of its own? Well, to do justice to the show’s original creator and host, Chuck Barris, they couldn’t do it until they’d found the absolutely perfect host [...]

Sam Rockwell half-jokingly said that if he won the best supporting actor Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, he would finally marry his girlfriend of more than 10 years, Iron Man 2 co-star Leslie Bibb. He did take home the statuette, and a source who knows the couple says, "Sam's not in a rush, and Leslie says she's fine the way things are, but who knows — a promise is a promise." You can't blame Sam, 49, for wanting to take a pause and enjoy his moment of glory. After all, he's been toiling as a character actor for years, earning raves but not much money or fame for films like 2009's sci-fi cult fave Moon and 2002's Chuck Barris biopic Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. "I think of myself as a journeyman actor," says Sam. "I've got some talent, and I work hard." Sam and his girlfriend, Leslie. (Photo Credit: Getty Images...

Will Arnett has a solution for the oft-reported division in America, and it starts with a woman playing the harmonica with a tarantula in her mouth. Yes, really.
The 47-year-old actor serves as executive producer and judge on ABC's The Gong Show, a revival of the beautifully bizarre amateur talent competition, which ran originally in the late 1970s with host Chuck Barris.

"We've often had a lot of shows on the air in the last few years that have been just sort of competition shows, all about finding the next great singer or dancer or whatever it was, and I just wanted a show that embraced the weird and the different, the unusual...

If you are old enough to remember “The Dating Game” created by genius Chuck Barris, three unseen bachelors contestants would answer questions and one would be chosen to accompany the lady on a chaperoned date. It was pretty tame fun but let’s face it, dating shows draw an audience. Somehow “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette” never struck me as fun. Contestants swap spit with the man or woman knowing they were doing the same thing with someone else just with 30 minutes before with producers in the wings urging them to go further and be more outrageous. Two decades ago, producer Andrew Lazar acquired the rights to Chuck Barris' memoir Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Biography. Stranger than fiction, the 1984 book detailed The Gong Show host's hidden life as a CIA assassin in the 1960s and '70s. Lazar enlisted Charlie Kaufman to adapt the wild story, which would mark George Clooney's directing debut. The resulting 2002 movie, which depicts star Sam Rockwell killing 33 people, has been largely viewed as fantastical fiction.
