Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang have had very different “Saturday Night Live” trajectories. And yet, they both have made history. Thompson, who joined the show in 2003, is the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history. When Yang joined, first as a writer in 2018 then moving to the cast the following year, he became the first Chinese American “SNL” player.
Despite joining the show 15 years apart, they adapted in a similar way: by listening.
Thirty years ago, Thompson was on the premiere of “All That,” the kids’ version of “SNL” that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990s. “To have Kenan be at the show now is only a sign that he has the foresight, fortitude and forbearance to just be a pure master at this,” says Yang. He turned to his co-star: “I don’t take it for granted that I sit next to you at read-through. I absorb so much just being in proximity.

“Welcome to The View, ladies!” Michelle Buteau whoops as the comedy actress roundtable veers into more dramatic territory. It was a question about the most transformative performances or periods of their collective careers that has sent this Emmy-worthy sextet — Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim, Loot’s Maya Rudolph, Palm Royale’s Kristen Wiig, Girls5eva’s Renée Elise Goldsberry and Survival of the Thickest’s Buteau — down a rabbit hole of self-doubt and self-discovery. And though a succession of big belly laughs punctuate the hourlong conversation at The Georgian Hotel in mid-April, the actresses also get serious about their fertility struggles and identity crises.
What is the funniest or strangest feedback you’ve gotten or read about yourself?
RENÉE Elise Goldsberry I won an award for being the No. 1 vegetarian …

Rachel Dratch made her first appearance on Saturday Night Live October 23rd 1999. It was a bit part—she played Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart in a parody of an MSNBC panel show—but Dratch killed it so hard that she was asked to bring the same impression back the very next episode. Already on her way, a week later she and Jimmy Fallon brought down the house in the first “Boston Teens” sketch.
But as she reveals to Mark Malkoff, Dratch’s rocket ship to SNL royalty had a slower start than it seemed to viewers watching at home at the time. In fact, she spent her first two episodes on the job without a single sketch making it to air.
Needless to say, Dratch quickly made up for lost (air)time, enjoying a legendary seven-year run on the show, and returning to cameo a whopping 14 times.

The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Holland Taylor and Ana Villafañe will star in the Off Broadway world premiere of Mario Correa’s new play N/A this summer, playing congresswomen of different generations in a production directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus.
Taylor will play “N,” the first woman Speaker of the House, and Villafañe will portray “A,” the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. The play is described as being inspired by real people and events, and although producers did not name names the descriptions more-than-strongly suggest Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
N/A will begin previews on Tuesday, June 11, at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, with opening night on Sunday, June 23.
The official synopsis reads, “N/A is a whip smart battle of wills – and wits – between N, the first woman Speaker of the House, and A, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Inspired by real people and events,...

Saturday Night Live skits have given us some of the funniest and most enjoyable movies of their eras. Ok, there aren’t many – we’re really mostly talking about The Blues Brothers, the Wayne’s World double feature and MacGruber – but what’s there is choice comedy. On the other side, we have crap like It’s Pat, The Ladies Man and Stuart Saves His Family, all proving that just because something works for five minutes doesn’t mean it can sustain 90. Take another recurring skit, Debbie Downer, for another example, who Rachel Dratch turned into a signature character in more than a half-dozen appearances. Thankfully such a movie never happened – something that Dratch is perfectly fine with.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Rachel Dratch recognized that while the character stands as one of her greatest contributions to SNL, she just wouldn’t have the legs to make it on the big screen.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Making her directorial debut, Shannon Triplett shows a sophisticated grasp of genre dynamics, with a bold use of space — a stretch of the Mojave Desert doubling for Death Valley — that proves more and more gripping as the film’s mysteries unfold. At which point, its boundaries begin to blur, slipping between horror and sci-fi in a way that recalls a hypnotic blend of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless and Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls.

It’s generally useful, when starting a film, to know the basic premise or general idea of what’s going to happen. “Desert Road” is an exception that proves the rule. Not only is it best that you don’t know what happens in Shannon Triplett’s debut feature, but it’s most impactful if you don’t even know the genre of what you’re about to experience. The film, a chamber piece of sorts set on a scant few yards of a Los Angeles desert highway, hides its plot turns well from the audience and is at its most fun when you’re being caught off guard. The downside to its constant surprises, however, is that the answers it eventually offers are less satisfying than the beguiling mystery it puzzles you with.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are New York City record-breakers: The duo’s Restless Leg comedy tour broke the record for most consecutive shows by any comedian at the famed Beacon Theatre, selling out 11 consecutive shows.
The Beacon engagement of the former Saturday Night Live cast mates ran between February 7 and 18. The record attendance was announced by Beacon owner Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp.
The previous Beacon record of 10 consecutive shows was set in October by Trevor Noah.
The Restless Leg tour marked the first time either Fey or Poehler performed at the Upper West Side venue. During the engagement, the two welcomed surprise guests from their SNL days, including Fred Armisen, Rachel Dratch, and Maya Rudolph. The shows were promoted by Live Nation.

Grimsburg: Rachel Dratch Steals the Show as Jon Hamm’s Dark-Sided Son (Yes, You Read That Correctly)
While you were watching the Golden Globes (or not) on Sunday, Fox was quietly debuting Grimsburg, the newest addition to its Animation Domination lineup.
On its surface, Grimsburg is a crime procedural about Marvin Flute (voiced by Jon Hamm), a crotchety detective whose personal demons are outnumbered only by his collection of dollhouse furniture. But after watching Sunday’s premiere, we can all agree that it’s Marvin’s disturbed son Stan (Rachel Dratch) who really steals the show. Well, Stan and his imaginary friend Mr. Flesh (Alan Tudyk), a flaming skeleton who gleefully stokes the child’s darkest impulses.

Three episodes into Fox’s animated comedy Grimsburg, I found myself reflecting on how quintessentially Will Arnett this latest Will Arnett role was. A self-loathing, alcohol-abusing detective trying and failing to get back into his family’s good graces, Marvin Flute is an amalgamation of some of the actor’s biggest roles: a little bit Bojack Horseman, a little bit Lego Batman, a little bit Terry Seattle from Murderville.
But Flute isn’t actually played by Will Arnett. He’s played by Jon Hamm, for some reason doing an overt imitation of Will Arnett. I’d known it was Jon Hamm, even, and I just forgot because that’s how well Hamm nails Arnett’s voice — the gravel texture, the snappy cadence, the whining edge. As a creative choice, it’s somehow at once low-key bizarre and disappointingly predictable. Which, come to think of it, could also describe Grimsburg in a nutshell.

Rachel Dratch used to be the ultimate "Oh, her!" comedian — the type of face and voice you'd always recognize, but whose name you might forget. Well, that didn't last long, because she was so memorable in tiny parts like "Southern Woman" ("Martin & Orloff") and "Female Mc" ("Winter Passing") at the outset of her career that she quickly grew into a beloved household name.
We know and love her now for her long tenure on "Saturday Night Live," where she helped create enduring characters like Debbie Downer, and in memorable roles in films like "Sisters," "Click," and "Just Go With It." Since she made her screen debut, Dratch has amassed an enormous 125 screen credits, and that's just counting individual projects, not episodes of TV, which would stretch into the multiple hundreds.
Those early years, where she was fighting for recognition with ounce inch of her comedic prowess, are well worth revisiting.

For a holiday slasher that took 16 years to officially get off the ground, Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" may wind up having perfect timing (read /Film's glowing review here). Based on the faux trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 double-bill exploitation experiment, "Grindhouse," audiences that were perplexed back then may be ready to embrace a gory, fully self-aware whodunnit with an axe-wielding killer pilgrim as its centerpiece.
Like a perfectly cooked turducken, "Thanksgiving" is a horror movie, a murder mystery, and a teen dramedy all rolled into one. Set in Plymouth, Massachusetts (where else?), it's also a mostly funny send-up of corporate greed and so-called "Massholes" who don't take too kindly to being picked off one by one in increasingly gruesome fashions. (One almost expects cameos from Boston brats Sully (Jimmy Fallon) and Zazu (Rachel Dratch) during the opening scene depicting a calamitous Black Friday riot.)

Becky Lynch might be known as “The Man” in WWE, but she clearly didn’t win that name by leading the wrestling promotion’s trivia team. In a first not just for “Celebrity Jeopardy” but for “Jeopardy” as a whole, the pro wrestling superstar delivered zero correct responses across the first 60 clues.
According to popular “Jeopardy” statistics tracking site “The Jeopardy! Fan,” Lynch is the first known contestant to have no correct responses across both the regular and Double Jeopardy rounds. Records were broken on Wednesday’s (November 15) episode of Celebrity Jeopardy!, which saw a three-way showdown between Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch and WWE superstar Becky Lynch. Fans were smitten with Culkin, who had an impressive performance across the episode but lost by just $1 to Dratch in Final Jeopardy! The former child star looked fresh, rocking a beard and stylish haircut, which had some viewers drooling. “Watching Celebrity Jeopardy and drooling over how healthy and gorgeous Macaulay Culkin is… what?! I hope he wins,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). “I’m always taken aback when I see that Macaulay Culkin isn’t little Kevin McCallister anymore. I’m feeling old watching,” said another. “Did not recognize #MacaulyCulkin on #Jeopardy tonight. With such a distinct, soothing tone, it’s no wonder Jon Hamm has gotten so much voice work. Now, he’s set to get his own starring role in an animated series called Grimsburg, playing a detective who juggles the struggles of his job and his home life.
In Grimsburg, Jon Hamm plays Martin Flute (looking very much like Hopper from Stranger Things), “maybe the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown and correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. To do that, he must return to Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret, and redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow detectives, his ferociousex-wife, and his lovably unstable son.

Fox will utilize its NFL doubleheader on Sunday, January 7, to help launch the network’s latest animated comedy, “Grimsburg.” The show, starring Jon Hamm (who also executive produces), will air immediately following the second game in all time zones.
The scheduling strategy was set to be announced on Saturday at the New York Comic-Con, where Fox is holding panels for both “Grimsburg” and its most recent new animated comedy, the Dan Harmon-created “Krapopolis.” At the event, “Grimsburg” showrunner Chadd Gindin planned to discuss his new series and introduce an early screening of the show’s first episode.
Both “Grimsburg” and “Krapopolis” are produced by Bento Box and are wholly owned by Fox. “Grimsburg” has already been given a Season 2 renewal (while “Krapopolis” was picked up for three seasons so far).

First Orion, now Feringinar. Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 6 takes us to another alien homeworld never closely examined in the franchise's live-action offerings.
Meanwhile, Mariner hasn't quite shaken the self-destructive compulsion, and Boimler discovers his Achilles' Heel.
Also, it finally explores the question of whether Rutherford and Tendi could ever be more than friends.
But before the LTJGs' antics distract us, let's point out the tidbit of intel revealed in the teaser. The Ferengi lower decks crew member on the ship that encounters the mystery vessel has foreknowledge they were going to be taken.
Also, he doesn't seem afraid, which is a strong indication that the abduction/collection theory has some credence. How this is a profitable endeavor is yet to be revealed.
Lower Decks continues to astound with the guest cast they are able to round up.
