The 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards were handed out today and to very little surprise The King's Speech led the way with seven BAFTA Awards as it was also the most nominated film among all nominees with 14 total nominations.
Among its achievements it took home Best Picture, Outstanding British Film, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Original screenplay for David Seidler and Best Score for Alexandre Desplat. Where the surprises came were in the supporting wins for both Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter showing The Fighter apparently doesn't pack as much of a punch across the pond as it does here.
Also, for those of you trying to predict the Oscars and are wondering which direction to go with Best Director, David Fincher took home the award for The Social Network, one of three wins on the night for the film. Aaron Sorkin also won for Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing.

Two things the British apparently love: stammering English monarchs and crazy-eyed New York ballerinas.
Tom Hooper's historical drama "The King's Speech," starring Colin Firth as speech-impeded King George VI, and Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," featuring a crazy-eyed Natalie Portman as a dancer on the verge of a "Swan Lake"-induced breakdown, topped the Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations, which the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced today. "The King's Speech" led the way with 14 nominations, "Black Swan" scored 12, "Inception" snagged nine, and "True Grit" and "127 Hours" nabbed eight apiece. Golden Globes Best Picture winner and Oscar front runner "The Social Network" earned a more modest six nominations.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have announced their nominations for the 2011 BAFTA Awards (the British equivalent of the Oscars). There’s no real big surprises on the list. The Social Network has been dominating awards circles in North America but The King’s Speech is leading the BAFTAs with 14 nominations, including Best Picture and Outstanding British Film. Black Swan (voted best film here at Sound On Sight) has 12 nominations, True Grit 8 nominations, and Inception 9 nominations. Personally I think the most interesting category is the “Outstanding Debut By a British writer, director, or producer”, which includes the likes of Gareth Edwards (Monsters), Chris Morris (Four Lions), and Banksy (Exit Through the Gift Shop). I can’t wait to see who wins, and I’d be happy with either of these three talented filmmakers.
Hit the jump for a full list of the nominations. Winners will be announced on February 13th.

The BAFTA film awards have been kind to historical drama The King’s Speech after it was ‘knighted’ with 14 nominations for the upcoming ceremony on February 13th. The film which focuses on King George VI’s struggle against a crippling stammer has been nominated in the major categories of both Best Film and Best British Film as well as mentions for its director Tom Hooper and stars Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. This as well as several technical awards to its capacity.

Tonight the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Award nominees were announced and to no surprise The King's Speech led the way with 14 nominations in all the expected categories including Best Film alongside fellow nominees Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network and True Grit.
Oscar front-runner The Social Network scored six nominations, but was still behind Black Swan with 12 noms, Christopher Nolan's Inception with nine, the Coen brothers' True Grit scored eight and Danny Boyle's 127 Hours received seven nominations.
Looking over the list really quickly I notice that not only was The Social Network not among the leading nominees it was also snubbed for Best Original Music, Cinematography and Sound. Elsewhere, Winter's Bone star Jennifer Lawrence wasn't nominated for Lead Actress as Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) was nominated instead. Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) wasn't nominated either, but neither was Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham.

In accepting his Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, writer Aaron Sorkin told Mark Zuckerberg — who may or may not have been watching the awards ceremony — that the people who made “The Social Network” all owe him a debt of gratitude.
That was certainly the understatement of the evening, as ”The Social Network” was the big winner of the night, taking home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Score.
All in all, the Ccma’s were a pleasant and relatively coherent event with few surprises, though it showed that “The Fighter” may be a more formidable Oscar contender than previously anticipated after winning awards for Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo) and Best Acting Ensemble.
Bale himself made one of the evening’s classier acceptance speeches (and Melissa Leo got to reminisce about making out with Josh Brolin).

The 16th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards took place at the Hollywood Palladium Friday night (Jan. 14). "The Social Network" took home three big awards: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, plus Best Score.
"Inception" was actually the most-awarded overall film, as it took home five technical awards and Best Action Movie. "The Fighter" was honored in the acting category three times, with both Best Supporting awards and the Ensemble award. Natalie Portman and Colin Firth each took home the lead acting awards for "Black Swan" and "The King's Speech," respectively, which also won for Best Original Screenplay.
Traditionally, Critics Choice winners go on to nab the Oscars, so look for some similar winners in February at the Academy Awards.

Every year I do it. I’m surprised how few others do.
I vote for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards as a member of the Bfca (Broadcast Film Critics Association). My official ballot is below, and I think all critics should show what they consider the best, whether they vote in the Ofcs (Online Film Critics Society) or Cfca (Chicago Film Critics Society) or any other awards. The 16th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards airs on VH1 on Friday night January 11, 2011. I will be there for the first time ever.

Let’s go behind the looking glass, shall we? The 16th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards are held January 14, 2011 at the Hollywood Palladium. I will be there. I vote. I am one of the 250 members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca). Right now the show is stilling trying to find the perfect host. I hope they go with a classic comedian such as Conan O’Brien or Steven Colbert (yes, those would be Huge names for this awards show). It’d be great to have a stand-up since the Oscars are going with James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Maroon 5 has been named the house band. I’ll be giving you my final ballot as soon as I am allowed to post.

With The Social Network dominating the awards ceremony conversation thus far, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced its list of nominees for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards coming up on January 14, 2011. As you might expect, The Social Network makes a pretty strong showing in most of the categories, and yet it makes you reflect and realize how it basically lacked any strong female performers beyond Rashida Jones, who I'm convinced was added in as an expository afterthought when test audiences said they were getting confused by the rapid-fire pace of Sorkin's dialogue. Even so, this year's biggest contenders seem to be Black Swan and The Social Network, with possible underdogs in the form of 127 Hours, The Fighter, and Inception. It's hard to believe that the latest film from Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) would be considered an underdog, but compared to the critical darlings of The Social Network and Black Swan,...

The Bfca have revealed their "Critics Choice" nominees and Black Swan looms like an evil tutu'ed shadow over the competition with a record breaking 12 nominations. True Grit and The King's Speech were second with 11 nominations each, indicating that the Bfca voters really do like the films they've just seen the most. The Bfca has long been known (and celebrated and reviled) as being obsessed with predicting the Oscars. It's a curious character quirk for an awards body that ought to be concerned with establishing its own voice and one that would be a smidgeon more respectable, even as pure punditry, if they'd only limit their acting categories to 5 nominees like the Oscars do. When individual pundits are judged on their predictive power, they aren't allowed extras, you know? But ah well.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I am a voting member, released its 2010 nominations for its 16th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards this morning. “Black Swan” earned a record 12 nods (picture, director, actress, supporting actress, original screenplay, art direction, costume design, cinematography, editing, makeup, sound, and score), while 11 were bestowed upon “The King’s Speech” and “True Grit,” 10 upon “Inception,” and 9 upon “The Social Network.” Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, became the most nominated actor in the organization’s history when she received her seventh career nod (for best actress in “Rabbit Hole”).
Noteworthy inclusions: Noomi Rapace (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) for best actress; Jeremy Renner (“The Town”) for best supporting actor; Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”) for best supporting actress; “The Town” for best adapted screenplay; “The Fighter” for best ensemble; 13-year-old Chloe Moretz was nominated twice in the best young actor category (“Kick-Ass” and “Let Me In”); “I Love You Phillip Morris...

This morning Black Swan got a huge and much needed boost from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) as they announced their Critics Choice Award nominees and Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller topped the list with 12 nominations including Picture, Actress (Natalie Portman), Supporting Actress (Mila Kunis), Director (Aronofsky), Original Screenplay (Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin), Cinematography (Matthew Libatique), Art Direction (Therese DePrez and Tora Peterson), Editing (Andrew Weisblum), Costume Design (Amy Westcott), Makeup, Sound and Score (Clint Mansell).
I don't say it's a much needed boost because the film was faltering, but more because it's not your typical Academy feature and this simply ensures Black Swan is now a serious Oscar contender... at least from a nomination standpoint.
Swan's 12 nominations was a record for the Bfca, but it only lead the Coen brothers' True Grit and Tom Hooper's The King's Speech by one nomination as both of...

It’s that time of year again, and after cramming all week to get my nominations in, the 16th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations have been revealed. The awards will be on VH1 again, Friday, January 14th at 9:00 Pm Et/Pt. This is VH1′s fourth year hosting the awards, and the first year that the show will be broadcast internationally.
It was a strange year in movies, though I suppose they all are, because while there were some great films, the nomination process was much easier for me. Last year found me struggling to whittle down choices in almost every category (with the notable exception of Christoph Waltz for Supporting Actor), but this year I wasn’t spoiled for choice. That makes it somewhat less surprising that the nomination record would be broken by Black Swan with 12. Adding to the overall unprecedented nature of the nominations this year,...

I've been freaking out about Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan ever since the day the trailer debuted and it's not healthy. I mean what if the trailer is better than the movie? Lord knows that's happened before. Since I don't want to know any plot details, I'm avoiding reviews like the plague (even from people I love) since you can trust virtually no one to be spoiler free these days. Even when they are, you end up knowing too much and having too many voices in your head before you see a film. But I haven't been able to help looking at various Venice born tweets.
Mostly though I've watched the trailer too many times and fear that there's no way that I can last another three months until the release without the movie becoming too familiar before a first viewing. Oh cruel world!
Take the following image for an example.
