A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.
Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

Grey’s Anatomy may have a lot in common with long-running hospital shows like ER on the surface. But TV showrunner Shonda Rimes revealed the slight details that made them very different from each other.
‘ER’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ focused on two completely different things Alex Kingston, Paul McCrane, Ming-Na, Michael Michele, Anthony Edwards, Goran Visnjic, Noah Wyle, Maura Tierney, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, Laura Innes | NBC/Getty Images
ER and Grey’s Anatomy would inevitably have things in common, with both being successful medical dramas. But the genesis of each show was different. ER was created by Michael Crichton, and was based on his own experiences going to law school. Meanwhile, after watching a TV show, Rhimes was inspired to make Grey’s Anatomy.
Before Rhimes came up with Grey’s, she was actually working on a war series. But current events dissuaded her from going any further with the show.

A few of last year’s most notable horror movies are still without physical media releases, and that’s because they ended up being streaming exclusives. That list includes Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hulu’s Prey, along with Hulu and David Bruckner‘s Hellraiser.
We have no idea at this time whether or not Hellraiser will be released on DVD/Blu-ray here in the United States, but we’ve learned the film is hitting DVD over in the United Kingdom.
The UK DVD release of Hellraiser (2022) arrives on March 27, 2023. As always, you’ll be able to watch the disc here in the States but you’ll need a Region Free DVD player first.

Before touching down in Pandora, Sam Worthington nearly landed a license to kill.
The Australian actor was one of the finalists for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the producers and stewards of the 007 franchise, were looking for a younger star to play the super spy after Pierce Brosnan wrapped his four-film run. Worthington, along with Henry Cavill, the eventual “Man of Steel,” and “ER” star Goran Visnjic were among those vying for the chance to order a martini shaken, not stirred.
The audition process was memorable. Worthington flew to London, was filmed doing a scene in the tuxedo (it’s a meticulous recreation of a sequence in “From Russia With Love”), and was fussed over by Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the 007 franchise, who went to his hotel room before the screen test to personally cut his hair to match her vision of Bond.

Hellraiser (1987) casts a long shadow over the horror world. The original film, directed by Clive Barker, is a remarkably faithful adaptation of his own novella “The Hellbound Heart,” a twisted love story of forbidden passion and pain. The hotly anticipated reboot from director David Bruckner stars Jaime Clayton as the Priest and Odessa A’zion as new final girl, Riley. A recovering addict, Riley stumbles upon the Lament Configuration and finds herself dragged into the world of its painful magic.
Also drawn to the box is Roland Voight (Goran Visnjic), a wealthy entrepreneur obsessed with the power of the occult. On the surface, Bruckner’s new vision of the story bears only symbolic resemblance to Barker’s original novella The Hellbound Heart, but upon closer examination there are several thematic connections lurking just beneath the skin.
A Passage to Leviathan
We are first introduced to the “Hellraiser” lore through an ornately carved golden box.

A new “Hellraiser” is upon us. The long-running horror franchise has a new, 11th installment, but this one – in a twist of fate – is good, actually!
“The Ritual” and “The Night House” director David Bruckner takes the helm of this “Hellraiser” reboot, which isn’t quite a remake of the original film but doesn’t completely upend the rules of the franchise either. It’s a new twist on the franchise with an emotional hook (the protagonist is an addict) and a new Pinhead (played by Jamie Clayton), but it delivers on the gore and practical effects that those coming to a “Hellraiser” movie would expect.
If you’re wondering how and when to watch the new “Hellraiser,” wonder no more.

This article contains spoilers for Hellraiser (2022).
Hulu and David Bruckner’s updated take on Hellraiser deepens the lore of the franchise in gruesome ways, setting up inevitable new stories and sights yet unseen in the Cenobite saga. The unsavory fates of struggling addict Riley (Odessa A’zion) and monstrous billionaire Voight (Goran Visnjic) we see at the end of the movie act as parables of sorts, illustrating in different ways how one’s obsession with life’s excesses can ultimately lead to an existence defined by pain.
“Pain,” of course, is a multi-dimensional word in the Hellraiser universe. Voight and Riley are both driven to the brink of madness by the pain they’ve endured, but the paths to their respective encounters with the Cenobites couldn’t have been more different. Riley, unwilling to take accountability for how her actions affect those around her (losing her brother being the ultimate consequence...

‘Hellraiser’ Director David Bruckner on the ’90s Vibes and Architectural Horror Approach [Interview]
Spoiler Warning: This article mentions setting and plot details.
One unexpected element of Hulu’s Hellraiser, directed by David Bruckner (The Night House, The Ritual), is its distinct ’90s horror vibes.
That’s most felt in Hellraiser‘s third act, where the Cenobites and remaining humans stand off in Roland Voight’s (Goran Visnjic) intricate mansion that doubles as a puzzle box of its own.
When speaking with Bloody Disgusting about the film, Bruckner confirmed the ’90s horror tone and explained the architectural elements.
“We definitely wanted there to be ’90s vibes,” Bruckner verified. “I didn’t know what it would mean to go back to something that I would define as the ’80s, necessarily, but a lot of that was in the way Ben [Lovett] and I approached the score. And just sometimes, the way the instrumentation would crawl across cuts and the commitment to bold themes. Not just the old Chris Young themes,...

Major spoilers for "Hellraiser" follow.
Recently, there has been an onslaught of horror reboots, which range from soulless cash grabs to new interpretations of old favorites that deepen the mythos surrounding some of Hollywood's most enduring franchises. Simply throwing buckets of blood at the screen is enough to satiate the desires of some gore hounds; for the rest of us, though, it's a good thing that David Bruckner's "Hellraiser" does that and much, much more.
The 2022 film is the rare reboot that honors its source material while expanding upon it in new and exciting ways. There are still plenty of nightmarish Cenobites, lots of brutal violence, and the creepy visuals that fans have come to expect from a "Hellraiser" movie. However, Bruckner also delves into the nature of addiction, whether to controlled substances or power, and the dangers that come with it. Further, Jamie Clayton, who plays the new Hell Priest,...

Warning: The article below contains major spoilers for 2022's "Hellraiser."
David Bruckner's "Hellraiser" reboot boasts exquisite design work and chilling Cenobites, giving diehard fans of the franchise a unique take on who or what unlocks the Lament Configuration box. Unlike the original film, which saw a thirsty — and showstopping — Julia (Claire Higgins) feeding men to resurrect her sleazy ex-lover Frank (Sean Chapman), the reboot focuses on what drives humanity's hunger for pleasure and pain.
Bruckner interweaves themes like substance abuse and recovery into the story, positioning Riley (Odessa A'zion) as someone who has lost control over her vices. Her brother, Matt (Brandon Flynn), has become exhausted with Riley's sobriety journey. In this light, the film's indirect and direct violence becomes a metaphor for how living with addictions can spiral into harming others, intentionally or not.
While the film doesn't deliver the strongest of characters, there's still power in Bruckner's...

This weekend’s anticipated Hellraiser movie is being marketed as a reboot. All the trailers and ads tease of familiar sensations, and suggest that we’re going back to the original source material for Clive Barker’s twisted mingling of pleasure and pain, dominance and submission.
But in truth, this movie could almost function as a sequel to the original Hellraiser flicks—or at least the handful of early good ones before the series devolved into straight-to-vhs and DVD self-parody. The 2022 picture is a new story with all new characters that narratively does not revisit, even in passing, the psychosexual melodrama that everyone forgets underpins Barker’s original 1987 movie, as well as the Barker-penned novella it was based on, The Hellbound Heart. But in truth, this movie could almost function as a sequel to the original Hellraiser flicks—or at least the handful of early good ones before the series devolved into straight-to-vhs and DVD self-parody. October is here, and it’s always a good time for horror fans. And this year, we have the return of a few familiar faces. In David Bruckner’s remake/reboot of Hellraiser (read our review), the filmmaker takes the story in a new direction. This new take follows a troubled young woman, played by Odessa A’zion, who comes across the mysterious puzzle box. And yes, Pinhead (Jamie Clayton) and friends are back for a bit of Hell on Earth. The film also stars Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn, and Goran Visnjic. You can check out this modern take on Clive Barker’s classic tale today, available for streaming on Hulu.
We recently had the chance to speak with the cast of Hellraiser and the film’s director. First up, we spoke with a charming pair as both Goran Visnjic, and Hiam Abbass discussed their part in this new vision.

Warning: This interview contains spoilers for "Hellraiser."
Now on its 11th installment, the "Hellraiser" franchise has seen its fair share of interpretations and countless cast members -- including "Severance" and "Parks and Recreation" star Adam Scott, who appeared in 1996's "Hellraiser: Bloodline."
Director David Bruckner knew he was going to be swimming in some sacred waters when signing on to the new "Hellraiser," but some of the big creative swings he took resulted in some memorable characters that are welcome additions to the franchise's legacy. Jamie Clayton has been making waves as the first woman to perform the role of The Priest/Pinhead, and Odessa A'zion delivers a gut-wrenching portrayal as Riley, the protagonist who is forced to deal with interdimensional sex demons while also struggling with her own addiction issues.

Greater delights, also known as major spoilers for "Hellraiser," await you in this article.
After more than 20 years, the first "Hellraiser" movie to be given a major studio release has finally been unleashed. With most of the franchise being relegated to low-budget direct-to-video schlock, it is a breath of fresh air to see Pinhead and their gash of Cenobites return, even if we would have preferred to see them in theaters instead of on Hulu. However, that's beside the point, because what matters is that they are back in all their horrific glory.
"Hellraiser" does some pretty interesting things with the established lore of the franchise while also feeling like its own thing. Nowhere is this more apparent than the changes made to the franchise's famous box -- in David Bruckner's take, solving the box to total completion after five sacrifices will allow the user to be granted a wish.

The original Hellraiser explored the outer limits of pleasure and pain in fascinating, grotesque ways. Hulu’s 2022 reimagining of the Clive Barker classic, however, is simply painful. It takes the most surface-level aspects of the original story and gnarls them into a bloated, forgettable modern horror slog that fumbles the series’ mythology.
In broad strokes, the movie follows a bunch of supremely annoying twentysomethings as they run from an otherworldly evil, screaming at each other incessantly in an ear-splitting attempt to suss out what’s happening to them at any given moment. They act like complete idiots, and it’s incredibly hard to root for or relate to any of them when they’re perpetually in the throes of a screechy temper tantrum or complete emotional breakdown.

Renowned horror author and filmmaker Clive Barker has oft remarked about his directorial debut, Hellraiser, that he had virtually no idea what he was doing while making it, going as far as to say that if someone had shown him a plate of spaghetti and referred to it as a type of lens he would’ve believed them. Yet for whatever experience David Bruckner, director of this newfangled streaming reboot, may have, his invention doesn’t even begin comparing with the (literary) visionary of a novice like Barker.
Adapted from Barker’s own novella The Hellbound Heart, Hellraiser was a modest hit that spawned a ten-title franchise. And even if, between a number of non-theatrical releases, the Hellraiser brand doesn’t exactly promise quality, the blandness of this reboot feels like something of a disservice to the iconography and darker implications of a series that nonetheless retains a cultural footprint even 35 years later.

For a film whose villains are obsessed with sensual exploration and obliterating the boundaries between pain and pleasure, David Bruckner’s Hellraiser feels oddly antiseptic.
Don’t get me wrong: there’s plenty of carnage to earn its “R” rating, along with creature designs that are the stuff of nightmares. But where Clive Barker’s original film felt grimy and transgressive, Bruckner’s handling finds nothing beyond the gore. It’s so focused on ripping off skin it never truly burrows under it.
Not exactly a remake of Barker’s 1987 film so much as another story set in its world, Bruckner’s film focuses on Riley (Odessa A’Zion), a young woman and recovering addict who lives with her brother and his boyfriend as she attempts her recovery. They worry that her path to healing might be damaged by her relationship with Trevor (Drew Starkey), a man she met in her 12-step program.

Plot: A reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner in which a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.
Review: The Hellraiser franchise has had to weather a lot of mediocre sequels, nine to be exact, since Clive Barker’s directorial debut unleashed Pinhead upon the cinematic world. Defining the sadomasochistic world of the Cenobites, Barker’s 1987 horror film has ranked as one of the most iconic horror creations of all time. In the decades since, multiple filmmakers have tried to deepen the mythology of the original story by giving us origin stories and alternate realities featuring the puzzle box and demonic entities. None of these films has managed to evoke the sinister feel of the first movie or capitalize on the story’s potential until now.

It’s time someone gave the Hellraiser series a proper relaunch. While it is one of the most long-lasting franchises in modern horror, most fans tend to land on there being two quality films and a handful of others that either have some odd charms or are just flat-out bad. That’s not a knock against the movies themselves or the filmmakers who created the various chapters in this ongoing saga. It’s just acknowledging the fact that this series has been a niche corner of horror for a long time, and it’s finally time that someone put together a brand-new film for a modern audience and for it to get some much-deserved attention again.

It’s not likely that any review, positive or negative, will effect the reception of the latest “Hellraiser,” now the 11th addition to the cult horror franchise. Once certain properties attain cult status, its followers will delight in any offering, even if only to fuss over its ranking in the canon. Based off of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella and originally adapted by Barker in one of the great writer-to-filmmaker transformations, “Hellraiser” belongs to the freaks, punks, and fetishists who saw themselves in the S&m-inspired looks and story of unhinged sexual exploration.
Unfortunately, It’s Disney does “Hellraiser,” which — incidentally — is exactly who paid for this latest iteration the classic.
Shedding the subtitles like a cenobite’s skin, “Hellraiser” is a 2022 rebirth for the franchise, free of all the sexy subversion that got it here in the first place. It’s perfectly entertaining, using Barker’s inventive tropes to tell a solidly gory nightmare,...

Bloody Disgusting’s Hellraiser review is spoiler-free.
Hellraiser needs no introduction. Clive Barker’s feature debut, which he adapted from his novella The Hellbound Heart, introduced horror to the hellish world of the Cenobites and instantly catapulted them to horror icon status. The arbiters of pain and suffering are back in the franchise’s eleventh feature, this time with a reimagining by The Night House director David Bruckner and screenwriters Luke Piotrowski and Ben Collins. Their Hellraiser takes a more faithful approach to Barker’s works, but with new hellish sights to show you.
A cold open introduces debauched billionaire Roland Voight (Goran Visnjic) and his experimentation with the iconic puzzle box. Six months later, recovering addict Riley (Odessa A’zion) laments to her lover Trevor (Drew Starkey) that she’s strapped for cash after the latest blowout fight with her brother Matt (Brandon Flynn). Prior to reviewing the new installment in the long-running (35 years!) Hellraiser horror movie franchise, I did my due diligence. I rewatched all 10 prior films, from the acclaimed 1987 original and its 1988 sequel through the ensuing two theatrical and six direct-to-video entries. Throughout the marathon, I took copious notes, careful to track the characters and plot developments through their many permutations.
Nah, just kidding!
Sure, I saw the first two films back in the day, and may even possibly have caught 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and 1996’s Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. But by the time the series went straight to home video, I happily bailed out, not being the type to proudly possess a treasure trove of horror movie memorabilia in my basement. So for all you Hellraiser aficionados out there, apologies.

In 1987, Clive Barker unleashed "Hellraiser," his stylish, artistic, gooey, kinky horror pic adapted from his own novella, "The Hellbound Heart." The film became a big hit and introduced audiences to the cenobites, a group of S&m creatures — angels to some, demons to others — who are summoned from untold dimensions by a puzzle box to offer people unspeakable pleasures and pain. The leader of the group, Pinhead, instantly became iconic, and when that sort of thing happens, sequels follow. Sure enough, a total of 10 films came out of the "Hellraiser" world, each more disappointing than the last. The series became dire, taking unused scripts for thrillers and clumsily shoe-horning Pinhead into the mix. Worse: the sequels also completely betrayed what made Pinhead and his cenobite pals so memorable. In the first and second films, which were shot back-to-back, Pinhead and his gang aren't necessarily evil demons from hell. They're otherworldly...

Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, which means we’re just about one week away from the return of the franchise. Clayton explains in a new interview, “This film’s version of the Priest is now a woman, which takes the burden off the audience of trying to compare the performance to Doug Bradley’s iconic portrayal of this character, lovingly known by the fans as Pinhead. Season 1 of Vikings: Valhalla dropped back in February to Netflix. While it was the premiere season for the new series, it actually followed some 100 years after the events that transpired in History Channel’s Vikings.
While Vikings followed the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons, Vikings: Valhalla covered Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and his sister, Freydis (Frida Gustavsson).
Already, it is known that Season 2 has been greenlit by the streaming giant, and the second installment was filmed at the same time as Season 1.
Season 3 has also been confirmed by Netflix, and Goran Visnjic will portray Erik the Red.

If the event you've ever played with a Rubix's Cube and thought you'd prefer more of a challenge, then Jamie Clayton has quite the contraption to share with you. After a string of movies based on Clive Barker's 1986 novella "The Hellbound Heart," most of which aren't that stellar, a reimagining of "Hellraiser" from director David Bruckner ("The Night House") will be streaming exclusively on Hulu within the coming weeks.
Although specific details on what Bruckner's film is going to be about, the film's synopsis indicates that whoever gets their hands on the Lament Configuration this time around is in for a very bad time with the hell demons known as the Cenobites:
In the all-new "Hellraiser," a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.

It's only a matter of weeks now until the dark priest of hell shows us all such sights with Hulu's new take on "Hellraiser." Based on Cliver Barker's novella "The Hellbound Heart," this new film from director David Bruckner ("The Night House") seems less concerned with whether it serves as a remake, reimagining, or sequel, and more with the prospect of making Pinhead scary again.
The film stars Hiam Abbass, Odessa A'zion, Adam Faison, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Selina Lo, Drew Starkey, and Goran Visnjic. Little is known of what "Hellraiser" is all about besides another group of curious minds toying with the deadly Lament Configuration, but the brief synopsis shows that, much like Ashley Laurence's Kirsty Cotton, another poor soul is about to come face to face with the infamous leader of the Cenobites known as Pinhead:

Director David Bruckner has such sights to show us. The time to taste the pleasures of hell is soon upon us as the cenobites are set to invade your television on October 5 with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated "Hellraiser" reboot. "It opens up, and it cuts you! And then they come to collect…" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for Hellraiser, their brand new take on this classic horror franchise. David Brucker, of The Night House and The Ritual, directs from Clive Barker's original book, reuniting him with David Goyer as producer / writer. The big twist in this one is that the new Pinhead is a woman - played by Jamie Clayton. And she looks freaky!! Can't wait. In this reimagining of Clive Barker's seminal Hellraiser franchise, a young woman must confront the sadistic, supernatural forces behind an enigmatic puzzlebox responsible for her brother's disappearance. The ensemble cast includes Odessa A'zion, Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Jason Liles, Yinka Olorunnife, Selina Lo, Zachary Hing, Kit Clarke, with Goran Visnjic and Hiam Abbass. This is gnarly, holy shit!! Looks like it might be brutal and extra gory.

What is it you pray for? For some of us here at /Film, we've been praying for the first trailer for the latest "Hellraiser" film for some time now, and thankfully, the Cenobites have answered. "The Night House" director David Bruckner has taken on the influential franchise started by Clive Baker for its first mainstream entry since 1996's "Hellraiser: Bloodline." With Jamie Clayton at the helm as the menacing Hell Priest, we are about to be treated to another bloody exploration into pleasure and pain this October on Hulu.
The trailer gave us the first look at what happens when people manage to solve the Lament Configuration. While it wisely cuts away from any of the assuredly grotesque results, we do get to see a hearty helping of bloodletting. Fans are also treated to glimpses of the film's redesigned Cenobites, the inner workings of Hell, and most importantly, the figure...

Hulu released an official trailer for the upcoming “Hellraiser” reboot, starring Jamie Clayton as the iconic pin-riddled villain, Pinhead.
In the trailer, Pinhead causes havoc for a young woman named Riley, played by Odessa A’zion. The 2022 reboot follows Riley as she struggles with addiction and comes across an ancient puzzle box whose sole purpose is to summon Cenobites, sadistic supernatural beings that come to Earth from another dimension. The original 1987 film saw Doug Bradley playing the leader of the Cenobites, and only in the later sequels was he then identified as Pinhead. The “Hellraiser” franchise has spanned across four theatrical films, six straight-to-home movies and multiple comic books.
The new film is a new adaptation of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella “The Hellbound Heart,” which Barker also adapted into the original 1987 film. David Bruckner directed the reboot, with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski co-writing the screenplay from a story they wrote...
