“Drive-Away Dolls” is an audacious lesbian road movie inspired by such Kings of the Bs as John Waters and Russ Meyer. Two young women (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) rent a drive-away car without knowing there’s cargo in the trunk that could get them in big trouble with a gang of criminals. Sure enough, thugs are soon chasing them down America’s highways.
Luckily, just about every man in the movie is a bumbling idiot. And not everyone keeps their head.
“Drive-Away Dolls” is the definition of ribald. These girls are as randy and on the make as any of their “Porky’s” counterparts. The movie wears no pretensions. It’s not going up for Oscars. It’s coming out in February, for Chrissakes!
To help promote the movie, filmmakers Ethan Coen — who accepted the Best Picture Oscar for “No Country for Old Men” back in 2008 with his usual creative partner,...

Spouses Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s Drive-Away Dolls is a crazy and twisted mix of blackmail, murder, and sexually adventurous lesbians, with a healthy sprinkling of “Wtf is going on” humor. There’s literally nothing out of bounds in Coen and Cooke’s screwball comedy/buddy road trip adventure that wears its R-rating like a lusty badge of honor.
The year’s 1999 and lesbian BFFs are ready for a change of scenery. Jamie, who prefers sampling multiple sexual partners even while in a committed relationship, is coming off a bad breakup with her police officer girlfriend (Beanie Feldstein). Which is as good an excuse as any to embark on a road trip. And the sexually repressed, introverted Marian wants to make the trip from Philadelphia to Tallahassee for a little birdwatching.

The novel White Noise by Don DeLillo is a landmark work of literary fiction. It won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction when it was released in 1985, and DeLillo’s poetic satire of American society remains as vital now as it was when the book was first released.
Hollywood loves to mine the world of literature for new IP, but early attempts to turn White Noise into a movie were unsuccessful. Barry Sonnenfeld was set to direct an adaptation in 2004, and Michael Almereyda was announced as the writer and director of a different version in 2016.

Brian Tyree Henry is getting more comfortable being vulnerable.
“For a long time, I used acting as a shield. I was like, ‘Well, that’s them. That’s not me,’” Henry tells Variety, assessing the defense mechanism he’s used to separate himself from his characters.
“Now, it’s gotten to a point where people can see the performance, but they’re also getting closer to seeing me at the same time. And it feels bizarre,” he admits. “But it also feels necessary, because then there’s a care that goes into what people want for me, instead of what they want from me. It really touches me every day.”
The change in perspective began during the making of his latest film “Causeway,” where Henry plays James Aucoin, an amputee who bonds with a soldier recovering from a traumatic brain injury (played by Jennifer Lawrence). Directed by Henry’s longtime...

Noah Baumbach, the director whose previous films include dramas like The Squid And The Whale, offers audiences an absurdist comic fantasy with White Noise. In White Noise, a couple played by Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig live in a pleasant bubble of late 20th century clueless consumerism in a small idyllic-looking college town, until trouble comes to town.
Jack Gladney (Driver) is a college professor and his present and fourth wife Babette (Gerwig) is a stay-at-home mother raising their three children from previous marriages and a toddler of their own. It is the era of station wagons (the family vehicle fav before the minivan that had its peak in the ’70s), and the town is celebrating the parade of family station wagons bearing students like the return of swallows to Capistrano.

Netflix’s upcoming film “White Noise” could find itself in the Oscar race for best original song with a new track from long-running Brooklyn dance-rock band LCD Soundsystem, Variety has learned exclusively.
The new film from writer, director and producer Noah Baumbach, will feature the track “New Body Rhumba,” the band’s first new original recording in five years. The single will be released later in 2022.
Formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2002 by DJ-producer-frontman James Murphy, the group issued a strong run of albums before disbanding in 2011 amid great fanfare, including a big farewell concert at Madison Square Garden, documented in the concert film “Shut Up and Play the Hits.” However, just five years later, the group reformed for a headlining slot at the Coachella festival, a new tour and a new studio album, provoking so much grumbling from fans that Murphy apologized. The album, “American Dream,” was released in...

Oscar-nominated writer/director Noah Baumbach reunites with two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver and three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig (his real-life partner) for White Noise, based on the book by Don DeLillo. The one-minute teaser trailer doesn’t give away much; if you haven’t read the book, odds are you’ll have no better idea what the film’s about after watching the trailer than you did before pressing play.
Netflix hasn’t set a premiere date for the comedy/drama which is embarking on a festival run before its wide release. White Noise is the opening night film at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2022 and will screen at the New York Film Festival in September.

Viewers are getting their first look at Noah Baumbach’s latest project, “White Noise”.
Baumbach writes, directs, and produces the dark satire starring frequent collaborators Adam Driver and real-life partner Greta Gerwig in the Netflix film. Based on the 1985 novel by Don DeLillo, “White Noise” marks the first time Baumach will direct a film he didn’t write himself.
The story centres on Prof. Jack Gladney (Driver), an academic who has made a name for himself in the field of “Hitler studies” and his wife Babette (Gerwig), who struggle to protect their family after an “airborne toxic event” occurs in their fictional town. The film’s official synopsis says the story “dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.”

In the engrossing new Apple TV+ thriller Severance, Adam Scott plays Mark, a man who literally has no life outside of work — well, half the time, anyway.
Let me explain. The show takes place in a world where corporate employees can volunteer for a “severance” procedure that completely separates their memories of their time at the office from their memories of everything else. So there are essentially two Marks: the “innie,” who only exists in and around the sub-basement cubicle where he does some inscrutable kind of data entry, and the “outie,...

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms — is both timeless and timely.
Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.
There have been other adaptations of the book. Most famously Little Women (1933) – Directed by George Cukor, stars Katharine Hepburn (Jo), Joan Bennett (Amy), Jean Parker (Beth), and Frances Dee (Meg). Little Women (1949) – Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, stars June Allyson (Jo), Elizabeth Taylor (Amy), Margaret O...

Steve Carell gives a sensitive performance as a grieving Vietnam vet father on a road trip to bury his son killed in Iraq, accompanied by his two Vietnam War buddies, played by Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne, in Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying.
Set in 2003, the film combines elements of a road trip buddy movie and a reflection on two wars and soldiers shared experiences. In Vietnam, quiet Larry Shepherd (Steve Carell), who the others call Doc, was a Navy Corps medic while the more boisterous Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) were Marines in the same unit. Dialogue in film can be tricky. Whether the screenwriter is trying to lay out exposition or have an emotional moment between two characters, the nuances of screenwriting are understandably crucial to a successful film. That is why most of Richard Linklater’s films are almost always successful. The man behind the “Before” trilogy (Before Sunrise [1995], Before Sunset [2004], and Before Midnight [2013]), Dazed and Confused (1993), Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), and one of the decade’s best films, Boyhood (2014), has a talent for creating entertaining and thoughtful movies that feature essentially just people talking. His characters walk through the streets of Vienna talking about their lives (Before Sunrise), talk at parties on the weekend leading up to the first day of a college semester (Everybody Wants Some!!), and talk about what they want to see in the newest Star Wars movie around a campfire (Boyhood). Linklater is the master of creating natural dialogue between...

I've asked the director what, after 20 years of making movies professionally -- "30, if you count my early Super-8 efforts," he chimes in -- gets him excited to still do what he does. "I just think the storytelling, you know?"
"I used to see it as more of a technical thing. Like, Oh, I'm a filmmaker first, and I'll make a film about this," he explains. We are sitting in a suite at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons, and Linklater is dressed in his go-to ensemble of a gray button-down and jeans, his bangs splashed across his forehead. "Now it's in full embrace of storytelling. It's such a powerful storytelling medium, and there are so many great stories in the world, so many great characters. I'll never get enough."
Linklater's latest story is Last Flag Flying, out now, about...

Edgar Wright was, by his own account, "21 years old, living in North London, broke and on the dole – that's British for 'welfare'" in 1995 when he was struck by what he can only compare to a near-religious vision. The filmmaker was in the process of editing his first movie, a low-budget Spaghetti western homage, but the future director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had nothing lined up and no sense of what he really wanted to do with his life. And then he put on "Bellbottoms," the first...

'True Grit' 2010: Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges. 'True Grit' 2010 review: 'Far Superior' to 1969 John Wayne Western I've gotten to the point with the Coen brothers where I just expect something wonderful every time they make a movie. For me, that was the case even with an effort like True Grit. For others, however, it was different. When the Coens announced their plans to adapt Charles Portis' novel, heads turned and were scratched by many. After all, not only were the brothers going to adapt a book, something they had done only once before (twice if you count The Odyssey), but they were going to remake a movie made famous by John Wayne in 1969. To many, especially lovers of Westerns, touching True Grit was sacrilege. But the Coens weren't deterred, and thankfully so. Their adaptation of True Grit is not only far superior to Henry Hathaway's 1969 version, it...

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and.if he has his way.every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians he has under his thumb. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of Lapd outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

MIB3: Will Smith, Men in Black 3 Will Smith / Tommy Lee Jones’ Men In Black 3 Box Office: Badly Trails Men In Black, Men In Black II Why the underwhelming (estimated) Men in Black 3 opening-weekend performance at the domestic box-office? Barry Sonnenfeld’s film has an acceptable 73% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics (with a so-so average rating of 6.3/10). In any case, movies such as Men in Black 3 are review-proof because people who go to big action / horror / trademarked movies / franchises on the first weekend usually don’t bother reading reviews. What then? Well, as mentioned in a previous article, one possibility is that Will Smith hasn’t made a movie in four years. And Smith’s pre-MIB3 release, the Gabriele Muccino-directed $55m-budgeted Seven Pounds, was a major box-office disappointment, grossing only $69.95m in North America. (Internationally, Seven Pounds performed better — though without reaching blockbuster status: $98.21m.

MIB3: Emma Thompson, Will Smith, Men in Black 3 Men in Black III, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, opened with "solid," though hardly outstanding figures at the North American box office this weekend. I have "solid" in quotes because for an eagerly anticipated, highly expensive 3D movie at 4,248 locations, $55m in three days (including a Sunday preceding a holiday) and $70m in four days (Memorial Day is a major Us holiday) simply isn’t good enough. Not even close. Box-office prognosticators were expecting the third Will Smith-Tommy Lee Jones pairing to bring in $80m-90m. The above figures, studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, fell way below expectations. If Sony Pictures is to recover its Men in Black 3 investment — anywhere between $225m-$300m, plus another $100m-$150m marketing / distribution expenses — that will be on account of MIB3‘s popularity abroad, where the film...

Men in Black 3: Josh Brolin, Will Smith Starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, Men in Black III opened with solid though hardly outstanding figures at the North American box office on Friday. Directed by Men in Black / Men in Black II‘s Barry Sonnenfeld, the action / comedy / sci-fier will undoubtedly be this four-day weekend’s top-grossing movie — which means that after three weekends on top, The Avengers‘ reign at the domestic box office is over. But there’s no denying that MIB3‘s Friday performance fell below expectations, especially for a 3D movie budgeted at somewhere between $225m-$300m. Men in Black 3 collected $18m (including $1.55m from Thursday midnight screenings) at 4,248 theaters according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Bom’s Ray Subers predicts that Men in Black 3 will gross at least $70m — perhaps even reaching $80m — over the four-day weekend. Box-office prognosticators...

Chicago – “If you want a friend in Washington,” Harry S. Truman once said, “get a dog.” The same can be said for the film industry, as they keep producing canine quandaries. Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Sam Shepard and Elisabeth Moss cozy up to their own ‘Darling Companion.’
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is about folks of a certain age who are contemplating some of their own mortality, and what prompts such action is a person’s best friend, a mutt named Freeway. The film is unusually paced, almost leisurely so, and the cast is all-around excellent, no doubt dog lovers all. Diane Keaton still has the power to shoulder a film, and old pros Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins and Kevin Kline also get to sink their teeth into a film that’s about losing that dog, but never allowing it to sink into cloying sentiment.
