Nicole Kidman is the 2024 AFI Life Achievement Award honoree for her film career.
“Nicole Kidman embodies the glamour and romance of Hollywood past – a true screen icon – but she is also a risk taker – and so each performance is something new and something profound,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President & CEO. “And like all truly great artists – Nicole not only gives back – she drives culture forward with her commitment to amplifying the voices of female directors and producers.”
Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts and Reese Witherspoon are some of the presenters who honored Kidman at the event at the Dolby Theatre on April 27.

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning. As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Exclusive: Last year’s awards cycle was a big one for indie public relations firm EBComs, which specializes in behind-the-camera talent. Out of the year’s five cinematography Oscar nominees, three were EBComs clients, and the company ultimately walked away with two wins —James Friend and Paul Rogers. This month, the company, headed by Aussie native Meredith Emmanuel, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Emmanuel launched the indie firm in 1998, which has quietly grown in size and ambition. The company, headquartered in Los Angeles, now spans a network of offices in Sydney, and London. In 2022, Emmanuel expanded the leadership team, promoting three senior team members to partners: Ranjinder Hans, Vice President, Talent Relations and Awards; Mackinley Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer; and Mary Keeler, Chief Financial Officer. Over the past three years, the company has expanded to repping artists’ guilds,...

Jane Lynch is a work-obsessed CEO whose eyes get opened to the benefits of play thanks to six adventurous children who bring fun and color to a monotonous workplace. No, that is not the premise of a new Hollywood blockbuster, but a short brand film that is part of Danish toy company Lego Group’s Play Is Your Superpower campaign.
Lego says it is the brand’s “first-ever fully playable brand film, which celebrates the heroes that can emerge in a world that has forgotten how to play.” Indeed, the five-minute story contains clues that can be used to solve puzzles and unlock minifigures that can be personalized.
Lynch brings her humor and star power to the film, but she is not the only Hollywood name with a key role in the production. The film was directed by cinematographer, screenwriter and director Ellen Kuras, best known for her work on...

Every Oscar season brings a perfect blend of unexpected movies joining into the race, films falling out and lots of other last-minute decisions. Our 2024 Oscars predictions center launched in early July with the eight top categories. Since then, we’ve received alerts and notices that 13 movies will be eligible instead for 2024 (and the 2025 Academy Awards competition).
More changes will certainly be made in the upcoming months with news from festivals, premieres, red carpet events and critical response. But for now, here are the 13 films that were initially available for 2024 prediction but have been removed. Keep in mind that the reasons for changes could be more editing/technical work needs to be done on these movies, quality level is low, getting away from the strikes timeframce, and/or holding to have more product in 2024 since production has been slowed down.
Also, any film listed below could be reconsidered and shifted back...

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.
Original Score

After waiting nearly three years after the end of season two, The Mandalorian is back with new weekly episodes on Disney+. Fans are captivated by the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu but the show is also notable for the unique circumstances of its production. The Mandalorian uses innovative technology and a cadre of notable filmmakers to bring each chapter to life. The amount of time and effort needed for every episode could be daunting for some actors, but Pedro Pascal greatly enjoys being part of such a distinctive program.
‘The Mandalorian’ season 3 digs deeper into the culture of Mandalore
The opening episodes of the third season of The Mandalorian focus more on the lore of Din’s chosen family as he attempts to atone for his oath-breaking helmet removal in “Chapter 15: The Believer”.

What better way to officially close the door on an exhausting awards season than to look ahead –blindly — to what studios and production companies could bring to the screen in 2023.
As Variety‘s awards coverage transitions into the Emmy season, this annual tradition (albeit highly inaccurate due to release shifts and other varying factors) creates some fun and wonder as Cannes looms two months away.
One first impression is that the streamers are back with a vengeance with an arsenal of big names and titles aiming to take the trophy from reigning best-picture champ A24 with “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Apple Original Films has a duo of master auteurs on deck. First up is Martin Scorsese, whose “Killers of the Flower Moon” be revealed at the Cannes Film Festival with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone in tow. In addition, the still Oscar-less Ridley Scott will helm “Napoleon...

Season 3 of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” is a turning point in many ways, with a reunited Din Djarin/Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Grugu (Baby Yoda) potentially taking on greater responsibility to protect the scattered and divided Mandalorians. According to the series creator Jon Favreau, these higher stakes called for a larger visual scale, pushing production further beyond the limits of Ilm’s innovative virtual production tool: the StageCraft Volume.
More than anyone in Hollywood, Favreau was responsible for the earlier-than-expected adoption of on-set virtual production when he made the bold choice to use StageCraft, or The Volume, as the principal mode of production for Season 1. While the Volume has dramatically improved and expanded its capabilities since Season 1, Favreau acknowledged the need to be more strategic about when and how to use it.

Best Foreign Language Feature winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Oscar crafts battle Sunday night, grabbing three prizes out of six for cinematography, production design, and score. That ties “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for the most craft Oscar wins for an international feature. Edward Berger’s World War I epic from Netflix was also nominated for makeup/hairstyling, sound, and VFX.
Shockingly, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical biopic, “Elvis,” was blanked after also receiving six nominations, highlighted by Mandy Walker’s cinematography and the costume and production design of four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”). It was a particularly missed opportunity for Walker to break the glass ceiling again after her historic ASC victory. She represents only the third woman Dp to be nominated, following Ari Wegner (last year’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Rachel Morrison (2018’s “Mudbound”).

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Cinematography Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Bardo,” “Elvis,” “Empire of Light,” and “Tar.” Our odds currently favor “All Quiet on the Western Front” (16/5) taking the prize, followed in order by “Elvis” (39/10), “Tar” (9/2), “Empire of Light” (9/2), and “Bardo” (9/2).
Including his dual bids in 2008, this is the 14th time Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) has competed for this award. After finishing first in the 2018 (“Blade Runner 2049”) and 2020 (“1917”) races, he could now become the 11th person to achieve a third cinematography win. This marks his third nomination for a film directed by Sam Mendes, after “Skyfall” (2013) and “1917.”
The only other returning nominee in this group is “Bardo” lenser Darius Khondji, who was first recognized for “Evita” in 1997. He is now the first West Asian cinematographer to earn two academy notices, with the category’s only other generally Asian repeat competitors...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second episode of "The Mandalorian" season 3.
"Star Wars" has never been shy about its influences. Most famously, George Lucas made no attempts to hide the fact that he borrowed heavily from Akira Kurosawa and old-school "Flash Gordon" serials for the original trilogy. "Rogue One," as another example, leaned heavily into its trappings as a war movie to depict a rarely-seen, ground-level perspective on the epic galactic struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire. And even shows like "The Mandalorian" have worn their inspirations on their sleeve, as in the season 2 episode "The Passenger" that took its cues from "Alien" and "Predator" and plunged the series into horror.
Season 3 of "The Mandalorian" got off to a relatively slow and subdued start last week, but this latest episode kicked the story into a higher gear -- and evoked yet another pop culture touchstone in the process.

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 2 "The Mines of Mandalore."
Making a high-tech fantasy show appear both visually striking and tangibly convincing can be a tricky endeavor. Even objectively good pieces of media often struggle with proper lighting whilst depicting dimly lit sequences or nighttime scenes, making it impossible to tell what the heck is happening. Fortunately, this is not the case with the latest season 3 episode of "The Mandalorian," titled "The Mines of Mandalore," which is exactly where most of the key events take place — within the dark, dreary underground city of Sundari that Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu set out to explore.
Directed by Rachel Morrison, whose work as director of photography in "Mudbound" earned her an Oscar nomination for best cinematography, "The Mines of Mandalore" is a shining example of dimly lit fantasy sequences done right, wherein the episode's visual language greatly informs...

Dave Filoni, who serves as executive producer on Season 3 of ‘The Mandalorian’, has revealed why the story returns to Mandalore. Season 3 of the show holds many surprises for the viewers along with a relatable story filled with the action, excitement and unforgettable characters that only ‘Star Wars’ can bring to screens.
Commenting on the return to Mandalore this season, Executive producer Dave Filoni said: “When we got to the third season, we wanted to do something dynamic and different, so we felt it was time to return to Mandalore and confront just what happened there.”
He added: “What does it mean for the Mandalorians as a people and how could we bring these various groups together again? Because in Star Wars you want both a feeling of hope and adventure but with more uplifting positivity to be happening.”
“And people coming together and putting aside their differences is a pretty good reason to have hope.

Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker cracked a glass ceiling on Sunday, becoming the first woman to win the American Society of Cinematographers Award in the feature competition during the 37th ASC Awards.
The crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom erupted with applause and gave Walker a lengthy standing ovation as her name was called.
“This is for all the women that win this award after me,” she said to enthusiastic applause, and she looked for to more women breaking more glass ceilings. “Thijs is an inclusive, representative community,” she said, adding, “I didn’t cry, I thought I was going to cry.”
She thanked Elvis director Baz Luhrmann for allowing her to “create magic with him;” Catherine Martin for her “support and inspiration; and her crew for “dancing with the camera and flying with the camera” during Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis.

The American Society of Cinematographers handed out its best visual storytelling in feature film award to “Elvis” on Sunday night, and in doing so, Mandy Walker has become the first woman to win the top prize in the society’s history.
Walker triumphed over Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick” and Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) in a very competitive race.
During her speech, she dedicated her win to “all the women who will win the award after me,” and was met with rapturous applause. She hoped for more women to break glass ceilings and continued, “This is an inclusive representative community. Let us all strive for success and show our mission and create art.”
Walker‘s triumph comes as Oscar voting ends on March 7, where she is also nominated. She became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.
Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. Her competitors at the Oscars include two who were also nominated by the ASC, Roger Deakins for “Empire of Light” and Darius Khondji for “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth,” along with James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Florian Hoffmeister for “Tar.”

Plot: The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Since the first Academy Awards in 1929, there have been more than 600 nominees in the category of Best Cinematography. The cinematographer, who’s responsible for a movie’s lighting, framing and camerawork, is the second-highest position on a film’s call sheet, after the director – and that fact might help to explain why it is historically the biggest boys’ club in the history of moviemaking.
Of those 600 nominees, three have been women.
One of them is Mandy Walker, nominated this year for her vibrant historical re-creations and dreamy, fantasia-like camerawork on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Walker, whose credits include “Shattered Glass,” “Hidden Figures,” Luhrmann’s “Australia” and “Mulan,” follows Rachel Morrison (2017’s “Mudbound”) and Ari Wegner (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) as the only women ever nominated. Best Cinematography remains the sole award, aside from the male acting prizes, never won by a woman at the Oscars.

Is the Oscar cinematography category making progress when it comes to recognizing female DPs?
This year, Mandy Walker became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.” Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) made history as the first female Dp to land a nom and that was in 2018, while Ari Wegner was nominated last year for “The Power of the Dog.”
Walker’s up against James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), Darius Khondji, Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) and Florian Hoffmeister (“Tár”), in a very competitive race.
While the cinematographers’ branch has a notoriously poor track record in honoring diverse artists — no Black Dp has ever won the category and only two have been nominated — Walker might have an edge.
Her work on “Elvis” earned her the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts gong for cinematography — the first woman to take home this prize ever.

Thanks to an unexpected selection of Oscar nominees for Best Cinematography on Tuesday — particularly, preliminary frontrunner Claudio Miranda missing the cut for “Top Gun: Maverick” — “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker is suddenly the one beat, and now is the likeliest woman yet to break the category’s glass ceiling. She follows Ari Wegner (“The Power of the Dog”) last year and Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) in 2018, as only the third woman to be nominated by her branch. But neither Wegner nor Morrison were poised for a win like Walker is.

First, the good news: Asian actors had the best-ever showing in the 95th Oscar nominations, with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu (all from “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Hong Chau (“The Whale”) repping one-fifth of the acting nominees this year. Yeoh is the first Asian actress nominated in the leading category since Merle Oberon in 1935 for “The Dark Angel,” and she is the second-oldest Asian acting nominee after Youn Yuh-Jung, who won a supporting actress trophy in 2021 for “Minari”.
Brian Tyree Henry scored a surprise first Oscar nomination for his affecting turn in “Causeway,” Angela Bassett scored her first nod in 29 years for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas scored one for “Blonde,” bringing the BiPOC acting nominations total to 7 out of 20 in the four performance categories, an improvement over last year.

The 2023 Oscar nominations were a mixed bag in terms of diversity — with no Black actors nominated in the lead acting categories and women shut out for best director — but there was one particular milestone worth applauding. With nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu (all for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Hong Chau (“The Whale”), the number of Asian acting nominees reached the most recognized in a single year ever at four nominations.
This figure surpasses the lineup from 2004, which included Indian and Iranian actors Ben Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo (both for “House of Sand and Fog”) and Japanese star Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”).
“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, was the top film with 11 nominations, many of which held historical significance. The Daniels are the fifth duo nominated for directing, with Kwan’s nominations for directing and...

The 95th Oscar nominations were revealed Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. And as usual, the newest lineup featured a number of historic milestones. Among them this year:
◦ Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) is the first performer nominated for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. “Black Panther” was the first superhero film ever nominated for Best Picture.
◦ Among actresses, Bassett is third on the list of longest gap between first and second Oscar nominations, with a span of 29 years since she was nominated for 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
◦ Among all actors, Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”) has broken Henry Fonda’s record for the longest stretch between nominations. Fonda was nominated for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “On Golden Pond” 41 years apart. Hirsch was cited this year 42 years after his nom for 1980’s “Ordinary People.”
◦ Four Asian/Asian-American actors have been nominated, the most ever in a single year.

Just three years after Parasite swept every one of its possible Oscars but received nary a nomination in any of the acting categories, fellow unlikely awards favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once is responsible for helping Asian actors achieve a historic high of four nominations in a single year.
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) will lead most stories this morning with her expected yet still historic nomination for best actress, the first woman who identifies as Asian to be recognized in that category in the Academy’s 95-year-history. (She’s joined by Blonde’s Ana de Armas, the first best actress nominee of Cuban descent.)
Supporting actor frontrunner Ke Huy Quan, whom Hollywood couldn’t find a substantive role for for nearly 40 years, is the first actor from Vietnam to be recognized by the Academy, and the second ethnically Chinese supporting actor to be nominated since Haing S.

Mandy Walker has become the third woman to be nominated for an Oscar in cinematography, making her way into the final five on the strength of her work on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
“I’m so excited and honored and proud,” she told The Hollywood Reporter after watching Tuesday’s 2023 Oscars nominations live, “without any sleep.”
“I’m really proud of the movie and I know that audiences loved the film, and it did well at the box office. I’m glad it’s getting recognition this way,” she said, as her phone was blowing up with messages. Elvis received eight nominations, including best picture and best actor for Austin Butler in the title role. Catherine Martin earned a trio of noms for the movie, for costume and production design as well as for producing. Says Walker, “We are a team; we’ve been collaborating a long time. This movie in particular,...

The trailer for the third season of Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian drew a record 83.5 million views in its first 24 hours after premiering Jan. 16 during the NFL wild card playoff game.
That’s easily the top showing for a Star Wars Disney+ series, according to Disney. The trailer debuted online after it appeared on the TV broadcast. Previously, a trailer for Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi attracted roughly 58 million views.
Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian launched on Disney+ in November 2019 and quickly became the streamer’s flagship series (“Baby Yoda,” aka Grogu, in particular became an overnight cultural icon). Season two followed in late 2020. The series has spawned multiple spinoffs, including 2022’s The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Rosario Dawson-led series, Ahsoka.
According to the logline for season three, “The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
