Exclusive: UTA has signed comedic multi-hyphenate Cedric The Entertainer and his production company A Bird And A Bear Entertainment for representation in all areas.
A comedian, actor and executive producer, Cedric currently stars opposite Max Greenfield in the CBS sitcom The Neighborhood, which returned for its sixth season in February and has been picked up for a seventh. Created by Jim Reynolds, the show follows midwesterner Dave Johnson (Greenfield) as he relocates his white family to a predominantly African American neighborhood in Los Angeles. There, Dave’s excessive friendliness isn’t well-received by everyone, especially his new next-door neighbor, Calvin Butler (Cedric The Entertainer). Cedric won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the show last year, marking his sixth inclusion in the category.

Meg DeLoatch has come onboard the CBS comedy “The Neighborhood” as showrunner and executive producer of Season 4, Variety has learned.
DeLoatch takes over running the multi-cam comedy from series creator Jim Reynolds, whose exit from the series was originally reported earlier this year.
DeLoatch most recently created, executive produced, and served as showrunner on the Netflix multi-cam “Family Reunion.” The second season of that series debuted on the streamer in April, with the first season having dropped in its entirety back in 2019. No decision has yet been made on a third season, per an individual with knowledge of the situation, but should the series get renewed, DeLoatch would remain onboard as an executive producer. Her other TV credits include “Fuller House,” “Raven’s Home,” “Austin & Ally,” and “Single Ladies.” She also created and executive produced the Upn series “Eve.”

“The Neighborhood” creator, producer and showrunner Jim Reynolds has exited the show amid concerns over his leadership style.
According to a source familiar with the situation, CBS Studios had received negative feedback about Reynolds’ abilities as a leader and manager, some of which related to cultural issues, including from two Black writers who recently left the show. The series, which stars Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, is described by the studio as centering on “the nicest guy in the Midwest who moves his family into a tough neighborhood in L.A. where not everyone appreciates his extreme neighborliness.”
Studio execs had initiated a conversation with Reynolds about a leadership change, per the source — and the showrunner ultimately agreed that stepping down was in the best interest of the series. No Hr investigation was opened in relation to his departure. Season 3 of “The Neighborhood,” which in February been renewed for Season 4, has wrapped filming.

Exclusive: Jim Reynolds, creator, executive producer and showrunner of The Neighborhood, is leaving the popular CBS comedy series after three seasons. CBS Studios, which is behind the multi-camera sitcom starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, will name a new showrunner for Season 4, which was picked up by CBS in February.
“I am very proud of The Neighborhood and have given everything of myself over the last three years to make this the best show possible,” Reynolds said in a statement to Deadline. “I am so happy that the show has found such an enthusiastic audience and that it will live on. At this moment, in light of everything going on in the world, I had concluded that I am not the right person to continue to tell these stories. I am excited to see the show thrive and wish everyone involved the very best.”
Reynolds’ departure comes after production on Season 3 has wrapped.

We have the first freshmen of the 2018-19 season to score pickups for next season. CBS has given early renewals to dramas FBI and Magnum P.I. and comedy The Neighborhood.
The moves hardly are unexpected as CBS brass have been happy with the performance of the three newbies; the only surprise in today’s announcement is the fact that the list of renewals does not include another promising freshman series, drama God Friended Me. I hear the omission is due to ongoing talks over business points between CBS and God Friended Me lead studio Warner Bros TV, and the intention is for the spiritual drama to be renewed soon.
The four shows earned full-season orders in short succession last fall, and all are touted for improving their time periods.

In an indication of its strong support for its four first-year standouts, CBS is holding a “CBS Freshman Hit Series” panel at TCA next week, which will feature stars and executive producers from FBI, The Neighborhood and God Friended Me (I hear Magnum P.I. could not be included because it’s in production in Hawaii.)
The Neighborhood, starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, hails from CBS TV Studios and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.. FBI, from Dick Wolf, Universal TV and CBS TV Studios, with the latter handling international distribution, fulfills a longtime desire of CBS’ leadership to get in the Wolf crime procedural business. Magnum P.I., from Peter Lenkov, CBS TV Studios and Universal TV, has been driven by CBS and CBS TV Studios, which is the lead studio, with one of the CBS/CBS Studios’ top showrunners at the helm, reboot king Lenkov.
“Each of these distinctive shows has made their mark in a variety of ways,” said Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment. “Our goals this season were to introduce new series that audiences are passionate about, add more strength to a winning schedule and create more inclusive programming.”
Added Thom Sherman, Senior Evp Programming, “We’re thrilled by the creative direction and performance of these three shows as they continue to grow in popularity and resonate with the Network’s viewers.”
FBI is a top 10 series and CBS’s #1 new show in total viewers, averaging almost 13 million viewers each week. The fast-paced drama stars Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Ebońee Noel and Sela Ward. In addition to Wolf, Rick Eid, Terry Miller, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski also serve as executive producers as the series underwent several showrunner changes over the course of its first season.

CBS has handed back orders to three more freshman series, multi-camera comedy The Neighborhood and dramas Magnum P.I. and God Friended Me. The sizes of the pickups are not being revealed, but I hear that The Neighborhood‘s order is around nine episodes, which would bring its first season to a 22, and Magnum P.I. and God Friended Me have received pickups for about seven more episodes.
The Neighborhood, Magnum P.I. and God Friended Me join fellow CBS freshman series FBI, which already has received a Back 9 order. The only remaining new fall CBS series that is yet to hear on additional episodes or scripts is comedy Happy Together, which has been a wobbly ratings performer so far. After facing criticism in the past few years, CBS this year bet on a fall slate of new series with all diverse/female leads that has yielded four full-season orders so far versus three altogether last fall.

Black people are wishful, and white people are hopeful.
This is the crux of one of Cedric the Entertainer’s best stand-up routines, in which he compares the two races and explains that white people hope for the best while black people anticipate — and even court — confrontation.
Although Cedric told this joke nearly two decades ago in the hit concert movie “The Original Kings of Comedy,” this same broad perspective finds its way onto the maladroit but promising new CBS sitcom “The Neighborhood.” On the show, which premieres Oct. 1, Cedric — who also serves as executive producer — plays Calvin Butler, a middle-aged husband, father and auto mechanic who has to address his feelings on race relations when a young white family moves in next door.

He has spent most of his life trying to make other people laugh. But what — and who — makes Cedric the Entertainer chuckle?
There’s no quick answer for the former State Farm claims adjuster, who cites Eddie Murphy movies such as “Coming to America,” Jerry Seinfeld’s observational humor, “Key and Peele,” his fellow comedy tour pals and up-and-comers such as Lil Duval as people and performances that make him laugh. The star of the upcoming CBS show “The Neighborhood,” also a regular on TBS’ “The Last O.G.,” is a fan of sketch comedy and edgy risk-takers.
“I just like it when I see it,” he explains, going on to further name Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Bill Maher, Billy Crystal, and the late Robin Harris and Robin Williams as comedians who make him laugh.
Growing up in the Midwest, he learned the power of comedy while watching “The Carol Burnett Show.

Cedric the Entertainer is a man who wears many hats, both literally and figuratively.
Born Cedric Antonio Kyles, he launched his career in standup comedy more than 30 years ago, while still working a day job as a claims adjuster at State Farm Insurance in St. Louis. Since then he’s parlayed his brand of straightforward, crowd-pleasing comedy into such successes as the record-breaking “Kings of Comedy Tour,” acting in films including “Barbershop” and such shows as TV Land’s “The Soul Man” and TBS hit “The Last O.G.” Along the way, he’s proven he can tackle hosting (“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”), Broadway (“American Buffalo”) and voice work (“Disney’s Planes” and the “Madagascar” series). He’ll be recognized for his achievements with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the live theater/live performance category at a ceremony on July 19.
And then there are the actual hats.

With Murphy Brown and Magnum P.I. as two of the six new series on the fall 2018 CBS schedule, it feels like a trip back to the 1980s at the network, which will feature five reboots next season.
“Stability where we are strong, change where we need it,” is how CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl described the strategy behind network’s schedule for next season. CBS’ biggest declines this season were on Monday — that’s where the biggest changes are, including shrinking the comedy block from two hours to one.
Here is CBS’ fall 2018-19 schedule, followed by scheduling information on some shows that are not on it, brief analysis, and detailed descriptions of the network’s new series.
