Goodbye, The Lazarus Project. Unless a mysterious sci-fi organisation steps in to reset time to before Sky chose to cancel the mind-bending time travel drama, that’s our lot. After airing two seasons, they won’t be making a third.
The news was first announced in The Sun, and later confirmed by trustworthy outlets including TV Zone and RadioTimes.com. It had previously been rumoured that if season three were to go ahead, creator Joe Barton would be stepping back to a producer role and welcoming in new writers, who would have to do without some of the major cast members including Tom Burke. Now, that won’t happen because season two will be the last.
Barton posted the cancellation news on social media, along with a meme featuring a woman and a child wearing matching denim jackets throwing confetti in the air, along with the words “Don’t cry because it’s over,...

During the Cold War, we had “I Married a Communist” and “I Married a Monster From Outer Space” — two predicaments that the era’s paranoias rendered basically the same thing. In recent years, however, a more common screen fantasy might be summarized as “Whoops, My Significant Other Turns Out to Be an International Spy/Assassin.” There have been numerous efforts in that vein, of variably intentional absurdity. Now there’s “Role Play,” which by their standards doesn’t seem particularly outlandish for offering “The Big Bang Theory’s” Kaley Cuoco as a globetrotting killer cloaked in the normie guise of suburban mom.
This smaller-scaled, gender-flipped spin on the “True Lies” conceit, however, gets most of its charm and humor from David Oyelowo, playing the Jamie Lee Curtis role of the solidly middlebrow spouse flummoxed at finding themselves married to a lethal weapon. Revealing hitherto underexposed comic chops, he elevates a...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Great Expectations finale.
The pearl-clutching outrage that met the newest Great Expectations TV series did a lot for its reputation as a snarling, macho beast of an adaptation. The inclusion of spanking, swearing, sex work, suicide, self-harm and opium in Charles Dickens’ story led to headlines so appalled that they practically needed their own fainting couch. To some, Steven Knight’s six-part was less a retelling than a desecration, all of which fed into the series’ bad boy allure.
The truth is that, for all its adult content, this has been perhaps the dullest version of Great Expectations yet. It’s humourless, repetitive, almost entirely free of charm and feels much longer than its six-hour runtime. Wherever a spark of energy threatens to emerge, as with Olivia Colman‘s Miss Havisham, Rudi Dharmalingam’s legal clerk Wemmick, or Shalom Brune-Franklin’s intriguing Estella, it’s hammered out by the script.

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

In the very first scene of Hulu’s Great Expectations, a distraught and disheveled Pip (Fionn Whitehead) ties one end of a rope to a bridge, tightens the other around his neck, and leaps. What happens next won’t be revealed until much later in the six-hour miniseries, but what’s clear right away is the message being sent: This isn’t Great Expectations as you remember it.
This is a Great Expectations that’s willing to get dirty, to push the envelope, to take ample liberties with the source material beloved (or at the very least, tolerated in school) by millions. There’s more sex, more violence, more drugs. But with too little in the way of humanity, insight or entertainment to offer alongside them, what could have been a daring spin on a classic is transformed instead into a dreary slog.

The talent behind FX and BBC series “Great Expectations,” “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ literary masterpiece, has spoken about it ahead of its premiere.
“Great Expectations” is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A critique of the class system, Dickens’ novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.

TNT Acquires British Thriller Series ‘Lazarus Project’ as New Scripted Strategy Begins to Take Shape
TNT has acquired the U.S. rights to the British action thriller series “The Lazarus Project,” Warner Bros. Discovery has announced.
The series debuted in the U.K. in June 2022 and was renewed for a second season in August. TNT plans to air the eight-episode first season in early 2023.
“We have a robust slate of exciting new projects in development to give the large, engaged TNT audience a reason to tune-in night after night,” said Kathleen Finch, chairman and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Discovery’s US Networks Group. “Acquiring the U.S. rights to ‘The Lazarus Project,’ a series that already has a strong following in the UK, gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama.”

TNT is looking to a British drama series – The Lazarus Project – to plug its scripted gap as Kathleen Finch maintains that the cable network remains in the scripted business.
Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, US Networks Group for Warner Bros. Discovery, said that the acquisition of the Sky series “gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama”.
The Lazarus Project, which launched in the UK in August, comes from Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton and stars I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu.
It marks the first new scripted drama to appear on TNT since the April 2022 merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery and comes after the T-Nets killed series such as Kill The Orange-Faced Bear and ended Snowpiercer and Chad.

The Lazarus Project, the time-twisted action and espionage series from Comcast’s European TV giant Sky and starring I May Destroy You‘s Paapa Essiedu in the lead, is set to return for a second stint.
Sky announced Thursday that the drama, written by Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, Netflix’s upcoming Half-Bad) and produced by Urban Myth Films, had been commissioned for a second season, set to air in 2023.
“We are thrilled at the success of series one and at Sky’s recommission,” said Barton. “We have bold and ambitious plans for series two which will reunite all our characters in more thrilling and mind-bending adventures.”
