Welcome to the island of St Jory, population: one less than there used to be.
A year ago, St Jory teenager Cai Prideaux went missing and the police did very little about it. Now there’s a new sheriff in town in Sgt Grace Narayan (Anjli Mohindra), an outsider with an unbending belief in the letter of the law that’s ruffling feathers among the locals. The islanders, you see, are used to running things their own way. The True Way.
That’s the Hot Fuzz-meets-The Wicker Man premise for The Red King, an original six-part series written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse and directed by Daniel O’Hara and Lisa Clarke. It’s a crime drama/folk horror mash-up that uses murder mystery trappings to tell a story about religion, insularity and national identity.
St Jory is your typical folk horror island in that there’s nothing typical about it.

Goodbye, The Lazarus Project. Unless a mysterious sci-fi organisation steps in to reset time to before Sky chose to cancel the mind-bending time travel drama, that’s our lot. After airing two seasons, they won’t be making a third.
The news was first announced in The Sun, and later confirmed by trustworthy outlets including TV Zone and RadioTimes.com. It had previously been rumoured that if season three were to go ahead, creator Joe Barton would be stepping back to a producer role and welcoming in new writers, who would have to do without some of the major cast members including Tom Burke. Now, that won’t happen because season two will be the last.
Barton posted the cancellation news on social media, along with a meme featuring a woman and a child wearing matching denim jackets throwing confetti in the air, along with the words “Don’t cry because it’s over,...

Last year, The Lazarus Project brought us all manner of time-looping and terror-fighting thrills – and, thankfully, you don't need to indulge in any chronological tinkering to see the next set of episodes. The show is coming back this year, and we have an exclusive first look at images from Season 2.
Heading into the new series, the fight to secure the future has never been more intense. In an escalation of last season's six-month time-loops, this time the world is set to end every three weeks, forcing the Lazarus team to race against time to find a solution before humanity is wiped out forever. Among their number is resolute Lazarus agent, George (Paapa Essiedu), who’s been left in disgrace after betraying the organisation in the name of love. Can George redeem himself and win back the trust of his team? And, more importantly, can he trust them?

Netflix has swung the axe on yet another show after just one season.
The streaming service has a habit of cancelling shows before they have time to develop their fanbase.
Sadly, this is now the case for fantasy series Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.
Despite it being released on 28 October, the service has decided to call time on the series, which was an adaptation of Sally Green’s novel.
Creator Joe Barton, whose credits include the acclaimed Giri/Haji and The Lazarus Project, confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “Sadly, yes, Netflix have cancelled this. Very proud of it and really liked the people I got to make it with. Sorry not to be able to finish the story...”
Imaginarium, the show’s UK producer, wrote: “Half Bad is a show we are incredibly proud of, which gained stellar reviews, along with a fiercely loyal global fanbase.

Aidan Turner returns to US TV screens next month, and we could not be more excited.
AMC Networks’ Sundance Now today released the trailer for its original five-part thriller, The Suspect, starring the Poldark, Leonardo, and The Hobbit veteran.
The Suspect is based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed crime writer Michael Robotham.
All five episodes of the drama will premiere Thursday, November 3 on Sundance Now and AMC+.
The series follows Doctor Joe O'Loughlin (Turner), who appears to have the perfect life - a devoted wife, a loving daughter, successful practice as a clinical psychologist, media profile and a publishing deal.
He's even a hero online after rescuing a young patient who was ready to jump from the tenth floor of the hospital where Joe works.

TNT Acquires British Thriller Series ‘Lazarus Project’ as New Scripted Strategy Begins to Take Shape
TNT has acquired the U.S. rights to the British action thriller series “The Lazarus Project,” Warner Bros. Discovery has announced.
The series debuted in the U.K. in June 2022 and was renewed for a second season in August. TNT plans to air the eight-episode first season in early 2023.
“We have a robust slate of exciting new projects in development to give the large, engaged TNT audience a reason to tune-in night after night,” said Kathleen Finch, chairman and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Discovery’s US Networks Group. “Acquiring the U.S. rights to ‘The Lazarus Project,’ a series that already has a strong following in the UK, gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama.”

TNT is looking to a British drama series – The Lazarus Project – to plug its scripted gap as Kathleen Finch maintains that the cable network remains in the scripted business.
Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, US Networks Group for Warner Bros. Discovery, said that the acquisition of the Sky series “gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama”.
The Lazarus Project, which launched in the UK in August, comes from Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton and stars I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu.
It marks the first new scripted drama to appear on TNT since the April 2022 merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery and comes after the T-Nets killed series such as Kill The Orange-Faced Bear and ended Snowpiercer and Chad.

So it is over. The Suspect, ITV’s glossy five-part crime drama has come to a close and as predicted it was filled with twists right up to the end. Twists some of us had vaguely guessed at, but more gloating on that later.
Anyway, at the start of the fifth final episode our ‘hero’ Dr Joe O’Loughlin (Aidan Turner) is on the run. He’s now been fingered for two murders, Catherine, the nurse who accused Joe of sexual assault, and Cara, Joe’s friend, who we are constantly reminded is a sex worker. They’re not even the only victims. Erskine, the doctor who accused Bobby Morgan’s father of abuse has also been found dead in his house. And as revealed in episode 4, it’s looking more and more likely that a string of ‘accidents’ over the past 18 months, involving loved ones of the people involved in Bobby’s case,...

Doctor Joe O’Loughlin might not be a murderer, but he can certainly be a bit of a dick. In episode three of ITV’s prime time crime drama The Suspect, the psychologist accused of murder, played by Aidan Turner, launches his own further investigation into who might have killed Catherine, by trying to persuade fellow professionals to break their ethical code of conduct by revealing confidential patient information.
If you’re with the show this far you will recall that Catherine, a former patient of Joe’s who accused him of sexual assault in the past, but withdrew the complaint, was found murdered on the same day that Joe and his family were visiting the cementary where her body was dumped.
Joe proceeded to act extremely suspiciously, withholding fact after fact from detectives Ruiz (Shaun Parkes) and Devi (Anjli Mohindra), and with a lot of circumstantial evidence stacked against...

Oh Doctor O’Loughlin, for a “brilliant” man you are a very silly boy. In episode two of ITV’s crime thriller The Suspect, based on the novel by Michael Robotham, the clinical psychologist with the formerly “perfect life” has learned absolutely no lessons from episode one.
To recap, a young woman is found dead, stabbed 21 times, buried in a shallow grave in a cemetery. Either by coincidence, or for nefarious reasons, O’Loughlin talked himself into a job consulting on the case by muscling in on a meet up between young Detective Devi (Anjli Mohindra) and some sex workers he’s pals with.
Then once he’s brought into the morgue to see the body, he claims he doesn’t recognise the woman and yet sneaks back into the room by memorizing the code, foolishly (we guess) assuming a police morgue wouldn’t have CCTV up the wazoo.

You know the story.
Superhero psychologist with early on-set Parkinson’s publicly saves the life of a teenager, meets a detective while hanging out with sex workers down the pub, is immediately hired as a consultant on a murder case and then becomes the prime suspect. Oh and he’s played by Poldark (aka Aidan Turner).
ITV latest glossy thriller The Suspect, based on the debut novel of Michael Robotham, is a semi-ridiculous, tropey but nonetheless twisty-turny ball of fun told over five episodes broadcast weekly. Somewhat in the mold of HBO shows like The Undoing and Big Little Lies, where we revel in seeing beautiful people with aspirational lives get their comeuppance, this London-set version establishes Turner’s Joe McLoughlin as a man with a perfect life.

Warning: contains some plot details for The Lazarus Project
Writer Joe Barton came up with the idea for new Sky series The Lazarus Project in 2016 after reading an article about a Russian submariner narrowly averting the start of a nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. 2016 was also the year of the UK’s Brexit referendum, Donald Trump’s US presidential election, and the death of David Bowie, so it’s probably no accident that Barton was thinking about the end of the world.
By the time the seven-part sci-fi thriller began filming in January 2021, Coronavirus had changed the global situation so thoroughly that our 2016 fears seemed almost quaint. “It was the height of lockdown,” Barton remembers, “and the show was originally called ‘Extinction’. They gave all the crew members face masks branded with the name of the show, so we had all of these people walking around South Wales...

This The Lazarus Project review is spoiler-free and based on episodes one to four of eight.
With its top-secret organisation, globe-trotting car chases, shoot-outs, time-loops and kick-ass agents saving the world, The Lazarus Project may sound like the stuff of James Bond or Fox TV, but this Sky series is no escapist romp. Instead of distracting from the world’s problems, it brings them into focus: Pandemics. Wars. Nuclear annihilation. The quiet parade of continual threats to mortal life that make collapsing into bed at the end of each day a victory if you only let yourself think about it…
App designer George Addo (Paapa Essiedu) until now, has never let himself think about it. He’s an easy-going plodder who shares a flat with girlfriend Sarah (Charly Clive) and, were he not the lead character in this ambitious series, would likely contentedly tick off life’s milestones until his final breath.
