John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.
But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.
Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. Only with only David doing stand-up, just Laura Nyro stories. He had a tight hour,” Mulaney joked. “I liked that it was an...

Ryan Gosling is making the dreams of “Saturday Night Live” writers come true.
In addition to reprising his iconic role for a sequel to skit “Papyrus,” penned by Julio Torres, it’s now been revealed that Gosling’s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch was a shelved idea from 2018, with Jonah Hill originally being set to portray one half of the cartoon-character duo.
“SNL” hair stylist Jodi Mancuso and makeup artist Louie Zakarian both told The Ankler that the skit was originally pitched when Jonah Hill was hosting a Season 44 episode in November 2018. However, it was canceled due to challenges with the necessary prosthetics.
“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso said. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So...

Today, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2023. The numbers shine a light on what worked, what flopped, and how Netflix may move forward in the future.
Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com ‘One Piece’ to Rule Them All
The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.
One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.

Saturday Night Live wrapped up its 49th season last week with one of its strongest recent episodes, thanks in large part to (third time) host Jake Gyllenhaal. So it’s hardly surprising that the Road House actor’s name is among those that have been submitted for Emmy consideration in the Outstanding Guest Actor In a Comedy Series category. But he’s far from the only recent host whose name is in the mix.
On Tuesday, Variety reported that at least 17 of the 20 individuals who hosted SNL this season have been submitted for Emmy consideration. If that seems like a lot of people competing for the same awards, that’s because it is: it’s the highest number of hosts to submit in the past five years.

David Letterman kicked off the first of three nights of his “Gods of Comedy” interview series at Netflix Is a Joke Fest on Monday, sitting down with Nate Bargatze at the Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood.
“I have not met this man, so to nudge up against a guy who is just as good as it gets is a thrill for me,” Letterman said, prepping the crowd for the surprise guest. “In the world of comedy, some perhaps are as good. No one is better.”
Over the next 90 minutes, Letterman probed Bargatze about his Tennessee upbringing and his journey as a comic, including the time bookers for The Late Show With David Letterman rejected his audition tape to appear on the talk show in 2012.

Saturday Night Live returned on May 4 after a two week hiatus, and viewers flocked to an episode which seemed to get better as it continued.
With singer-actress Dua Lipa pulling double duty as host and musical guest, the sketch show delivered an average of 4,741,000 total viewers and 1,009,000 P18-49 viewers on May 4, 2024, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s up +1% in total viewers and +3% in P18-49 from the most-recent episode — led by fellow Barbie alum Ryan Gosling on April 13.
Out of the 18 SNL episodes that have aired this season to-date, the Dua Lipa-led show is now the third most-watched in real-time, and the most-watched since the Oct. 28, 2023 episode hosted by Nate Bargatze.
The aforementioned numbers will grow substantially as delayed viewing data trickles in over the next week.

John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. proved to be very much a late-night styled talk show in its live premiere Friday night on Netflix. Now like any good late night show, the six-episode miniseries is revealing its lineup for the coming week—and, as promised, it’s a doozy.
Leading things off tonight (and explaining this week’s Daily Show scheduling switcheroo) is none other than Jon Stewart. Stewart, like most of Mulaney’s guests this week, is in Los Angeles for the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival. He performed over the weekend at L.A.’s Greek Theatre.
Other guests sitting down with Mulaney later in the week include Nate Bargatze, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, Bill Hader, Rony Chieng, and Hannah Gadsby.
Each night also features a musical performace, with Warren G kicking things off tonight, followed by Joyce Manor, Weezer, Los Lobos, and Beck.

Netflix is a Joke, the 12-day comedy festival taking over Los Angeles with some of the biggest names in the game, kicked off on Wednesday, with Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Nate Bargatze and Sebastian Maniscalco headlining a show at the Hollywood Bowl.
In a show that Seinfeld called “one of the best nights I’ve had in my entire life,” the four comics each performed a 30-minute set to a sold-out crowd. To start, all four came out together on stage, as Seinfeld yelled, “Thank you Hollywood!”
“I’m here with the greatest comedians we could get — that were available tonight. How is it none of us had a gig?” Seinfeld joked, noting, “We have never been on a stage together in our lives. This is our first time.”

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.

Last weekend’s break-filled Saturday Night Live didn’t, um, break any ratings records for the late-night sketch show, but it did build on last week’s ratings gains to deliver the show’s largest audience in months.

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Ramy Youssef may not be a household name, but his self-titled comedy series "Ramy" on Hulu landed him Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, not to mention a Peabody Award in 2020. So, he's got the right amount of experience and accolades to be called up to host "Saturday Night Live." Furthermore, Youssef is an established stand-up comedian, joining the likes of Nate Bargatze and Shane Gillis as hosts this season. But how did he handle the live sketch comedy of "SNL" in his hosting debut?
Well, Ramy Youssef doesn't seem to have much versatility when it comes to providing a variety of characters, and "SNL" leaned back on familiar formulas like talk shows and game shows, though they still delivered some hearty laughs. But there were also some amusing, peculiar sketches in this episode, and of course, big laughs...

One week after the release of his second HBO stand-up special, More Feelings, Ramy Youssef made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut. Amassing over 26 minutes of screen time (translating to more than 41% of the episode), the actor and comedian became one of the most heavily utilized hosts of the season, behind only Bad Bunny, Shane Gillis and Pete Davidson.
Scroll down to see how Youssef stacked up against each of the show’s named performers, including musical guest Travis Scott and featured artist Playboi Carti. Note that our screen time data is calculated using a method that prioritizes face time, meaning that any contiguous (off-screen but in-scene) moments and practically all partial body appearances do not count. Screen time in the show’s opening credits, bumpers and goodnights are not included, nor do those portions factor into our assessment of the episode’s total running time.

“Saturday Night Live” will welcome former cast member Kristen Wiig and “I’m Just Ken” crooner Ryan Gosling to Studio 8H, where the two will host the venerable sketch show on April 6 and 13, respectively.
Wiig will be joined by musical guest Raye, and Gosling will share the stage with Chris Stapleton. As previously announced, the March 30 episode of “SNL” will be hosted by Ramy Youssef with musical guest Travis Scott.
Wiig, who was a “Saturday Night Live” cast member from 2005 to 2012, hosts for the fifth time — so it’s likely some “SNL” legends could make a surprise appearance to welcome her into the coveted Five-Timers Club. She stars in and executive produces the new Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” premiering March 20.

Ramy Youssef will host the next “Saturday Night Live” episode, airing on March 30, with Travis Scott as the musical guest. This announcement was made during the March 9 “SNL” episode, which was hosted by Josh Brolin with Ariana Grande as the musical guest.
Youssef’s upcoming HBO comedy special, “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” debuts on March 23.
This season has included a slew of hosts — some controversial. While the March 2 episode saw Sydney Sweeney in her hosting debut and musical guest Kacey Musgraves, the women followed Shane Gillis — the comedian who was fired from “SNL” in 2019 due to racist, homophobic, Islamophobic and misogynistic jokes he made on his podcast and other media.
After these comments resurfaced on social media, a spokesperson on behalf of executive producer Lorne Michaels said at the time, “We want ‘SNL’ to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane...

Jacob Elordi is bringing the “babygirl” energy to “Saturday Night Live” this week when he hosts NBC’s late night sketch comedy series for the first time. In his “SNL” promo video for the January 20 episode (watch above), Elordi seems confused when musical guest Reneé Rapp and cast member Bowen Yang initially refer to him as the term. Well, according to Urban Dictionary, “babygirl” is used for “grown fictional men who have the fandom in a loving chokehold” — so it’s a good thing!
The 26-year-old Australian actor hit it big with roles in “The Kissing Booth” and “Euphoria,” but it’s his appearance in the psycho-sexual “Saltburn” that put him on the awards radar with a pair of BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor and for Rising Star. Elordi plays Felix Catton in the Emerald Fennell thriller, a spoiled college student who becomes the object of Oliver Quick’s (Barry Keoghan) obsession.

Dakota Johnson is set to host “SNL” for the second time on Jan. 27 where she’ll be accompanied by Justin Timberlake as the musical guest.

Adam Driver is done with your “Star Wars” complaints.
As the host of the Dec. 9 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” he performed his monologue while playing the piano and reciting a letter of Christmas wishes to Santa.
“I would like people to stop coming up to me on the street saying, ‘You killed Han Solo!’,” he said. “I didn’t kill him. Wokeness killed Han Solo.”
The joke is a reference to his role as villain Kylo Ren in the “Star Wars” films “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker.” Kylo kills Han Solo in “The Force Awakens,” a widely controversial storyline among the “Star Wars” fandom.
He began the Christmas list saying, “Hey, Santa. It’s me, Adam Driver, from the nice list. And also ‘Girls.’ I turned 40 this year, Santa, so I would like five pairs of chinos. I also want one of those giant metal Tesla trucks.

Emma Stone joined “Saturday Night Live’s” coveted Five-Timers Club this Saturday, and was welcomed into “SNL her-story” by Tina Fey and Candice Bergen during her monologue.
Fey and Bergen gifted Stone with the iconic Five-Timers Club jacket, which Stone joked had a joint in the pocket.
“That must be Woody Harrelson’s jacket,” Bergen quipped.
“There’s also a vaccine card in here,” Stone said, to which Fey responded, “Then it’s definitely not Woody’s.”
Harrelson hosted “SNL” in February and alluded to conspiracies about the Covid-19 vaccine in his monologue.
Stone’s episode was opened by Bowen Yang, who played expelled congressman George Santos and sang a parody of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind.”
Stone currently stars opposite Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie in Showtime’s “The Curse,” created by Fielder and Safdie. The series follows Whitney and Asher Siegel (played by Stone and Fielder...

Bowen Yang channels George Santos channeling Elton John in this week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open, performing a parody of “Candle in the Wind.”
“It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like a scandal in the wind / Never knowing who to cling to when the law closed in,” Yang sings as the disgraced congressman. In the next verse, he belts out, “It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like an evil Forrest Gump / I’m the guy who lied even too much for Donald Trump.”
At one point, Yang pulls a “fake baby” out of the piano, mirroring a viral video in which Santos carries an undisclosed baby around the halls of Congress.
At the beginning of the sketch, Yang’s Santos fields questions from the media about his expulsion from Congress.
“This entire country has been bullying me just because I’m a proud,...

Only a comedic mind like John Mulaney’s could mine gold from one of the lowest points of his life. The comic released his third Netflix special, “Baby J,” in April. In stark relief to his previous, more ebullient hours, his latest work examined his 2020 drug relapse and the intervention that led to a successful stint in rehab.
“Going to rehab and a lot of other things had become public knowledge, and I felt there was no way to start doing stand-up again without going through this,” he tells Variety now. “I also had a lot to say about it. It had been an extremely eventful time, and the goal from the beginning was to do this as funny as I could make it — not as impactful as I could make it, not to pause for dramatic effect. I just wanted it to be a little wilder and put you in my very confident,...
