Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.
In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

The Night Court revival has seen the return of several characters from the original series, but I think fans are going to be most excited by the appearance of Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell as Bob and June Wheeler, the perpetually down-on-their-luck couple who always have a wild story about their misfortunes.
Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell will appear in next week’s episode, “Wheelers of Fortune,” you can check out some photos of their Night Court return below.
Kate Micucci joins the pair as their daughter Carol Ann. “Huge surprises are in store for Dan when he’s tasked with representing Bob and June Wheeler, the notoriously unfortunate couple from the original iteration who resurface – this time with daughter Carol Ann in tow,” reads the episode’s synopsis. “While 30 years may have elapsed, their bad luck undoubtedly continues to plague them.“

The Night Court revival is set to return with a special standalone Christmas episode which will air on December 23rd at 8:30 pm.
“It’s Christmastime at Night Court,” reads the official logline. “Abby enlists Dan on her quest to track down a little girl’s letter to Santa. Gurgs’ gift for Dan isn’t what she expected. Olivia is haunted by a witness who believes herself to be The Ghost of Christmas Present.” The Night Court Christmas special will also feature NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a guest-starring role. Fans won’t have long to wait for the second season of the series, as it’s set to premiere on January 2nd at 8 pm.

TV’s IP fetish is no coincidence. Recognizable titles and stars can guarantee strong initial tune-in off of modest marketing. But long-term results are lackluster. Just look at the past decade’s worth of revivals. Different from reboots or remakes, risky ventures in their own right, a revival features original castmembers of long-departed series revisiting characters for whom there’s an assumed appetite. Viewers aren’t often as hungry as studio brass would like. The average life span of recent revivals is three seasons, while their originals averaged eight-year runs. So as Paramount+ kicks off October by nixing one revived comedy (iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove, above) and attempting to mount another (Frasier with Kelsey Grammer, which premiered Oct. 12), The Hollywood Reporter examines 10 case studies from this revivals wave and where they went right … or horribly wrong.

Since 1991 (and primarily within the last 10 years), a total of six TV performers have earned recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for reprising roles that had brought them Golden Globe nominations at least a decade earlier. With this and his own stellar HFPA track record in mind, Kelsey Grammer – the two-time Best TV Comedy Actor-winning star of “Frasier” – can more than reasonably be expected to join said prestigious club by scoring his ninth bid in the category (and first in 22 years) for the Paramount Plus revival of his beloved NBC sitcom. What’s more, he might actually make history as the first actor involved in such a situation to pull off a comeback victory.
Grammer collected his first eight Golden Globe nominations for “Frasier” between 1994 and 2002 and emerged triumphant in both 1996 and 2001. After saying goodbye to Dr. Frasier Crane 19 years ago, he is now set to lead a long-awaited...

Rob Lowe, who starred as Sam Seaborn on “The West Wing” during the show’s first four seasons and left due to a reported salary dispute, said his departure from the Emmy Award-winning drama was the “best thing I ever did.”
“I felt very undervalued,” Lowe, an Emmy nominee for the series, told Stitcher Studios’ “Podcrushed” with hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari. “Whenever I talk to actors who complain about, you know, their relationships on their shows, it happens. It happens in any workplace. You could be in an environment where people sandbag you, want to see you fail, don’t appreciate you, whatever it is and whenever I share my stories, people are like, ‘I will never share my own stories again.’ They would make your hair stand up and there are some of them I wrote. To understand just how long the TV Academy has struggled to define “comedy series,” look no further than the first decade or so of the category’s life: Between 1952, when Red Skelton’s titular variety show claimed Emmy’s first-ever comedy prize, and 1964, when The Dick Van Dyke Show scored its second win, the category had no fewer than six name changes, ranging from the terse “best comedy show” to the rather unwieldy “outstanding program achievement in the field of comedy.”
And it only grew more complicated from there. Unlike in the drama series category, whose contenders have been consistently hourlong and usually serialized, comedy competitors also started to assume widely different formats: multicam sitcom (All in the Family, Friends); single-camera, half-hour dramedy (The Wonder Years, Sex and the City); single-camera mockumentary (The Office, Modern Family); and hourlong ensemble dramedy (Orange Is the New Black, Shameless), to name a few.

Tributes poured in Monday after it was revealed that Paul Reubens, the actor who made Pee-wee Herman famous, died after a private battle with cancer. He was 70.
Reubens turned Pee-wee into a one-man franchise, from the influential kids TV show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse through three feature films — 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, 1998’s Big Top Pee-wee and the 2016 Netflix pic Pee-wee’s Big Holiday — and even a Broadway play.
He also appeared on everything from Mystery Men (as Spleen) to Murphy Brown, and stole scenes in the likes of Batman Returns and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
“Paul Reubens was like no one else – a brilliant and original comedian who made kids and their parents laugh at the same time,” Jimmy Kimmel wrote today. “He never forgot a birthday and shared his genuine delight for silliness with everyone he met. My family and I will miss him.”
Said Danny DeVito: “Really loved working with him.

In 2022, Nathan Lane became the sole record holder for most Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy nominations (six) and then achieved his very first TV academy honor for his work on “Only Murders in the Building.” Having just earned another bid for the Hulu series, he could soon join six other two-time recipients of this award, including back-to-back champs Jay Thomas (“Murphy Brown”) and Mel Brooks (“Mad About You”). Although his chances are strong, he also faces the unique challenge of having to fend off a fellow former winner.
Seeking a bookend trophy of his own is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” guest actor Luke Kirby, who was lauded for the same series in 2019. Lane is also involved in an immediate rematch with Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) and faces fresh opposition from category newcomer Oliver Platt (“The Bear”) and Emmy first-timers Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”) and Pedro Pascal (“Saturday Night Live”).

Over the years, dozens of actors have accomplished the feat of being Emmy-nominated in one guest category for multiple shows, but only one has been recognized in this manner for playing a single character. This special case involved Shelley Long, who received comedic notices for playing Diane Chambers on both “Cheers” (1993) and “Frasier” (1996). After more than a quarter century of standing alone in this distinction, she could soon be joined by Carrie Preston, who won the 2013 Best Drama Guest Actress award as eccentric lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni on “The Good Wife” and is now seeking a bookend trophy for its Paramount Plus spinoff, “The Good Fight.”

The ‘90s were the decade of The Simpsons, sorry Seinfeld. The family was introduced in 1987 through a series of short clips in between skits on Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show, overstayed their welcome and were spun off. The series debuted on Dec. 17, 1989 with a holiday special, “Simpsons Roasting on An Open Fire,” before hopping on the rotisserie of regular rotation on Jan. 14, 1990 with “Bart the Genius,” directed by David Silverman, and written by Jon Vitti.
The half-hour animated series was created by Matt Groening, who came up with it as a last-second pitch to foil his own plan to animate his comic strip Life in Hell. The Simpsons was produced by TV legend James L. Brooks, who drove The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Taxi, and Sam Simon, who wrote for Taxi and Cheers.

Nathan Lane finally won his first Primetime Emmy Award after seven nominations last year, having taken Best Comedy Guest Actor honors for his stint on “Only Murders in the Building.” He’s in contention again for the Hulu murder mystery and could not only quickly double his hardware but become one of three people to win the category in consecutive years.
Mel Brooks and the late Jay Thomas are thus far the only men who have successfully defended their comedy guest actor titles. To be fair, not every guest winner or nominee is necessarily eligible the following year, but nonetheless, this is impressive. Thomas accomplished it first, prevailing in 1990 and ’91 for his turn as Jerry Gold, the talk show host and eventual love interest of Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen), on “Murphy Brown.” Brooks did one better and three-peated from 1997-99 for playing Paul Reiser‘s Uncle Phil on “Mad About You.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Night Court Season 1 Episode 7, “Blood Moon Binga.” Faith Ford returned to sitcoms in Season 1 Episode 7 of Night Court as Abby Stone’s (Melissa Rauch) mom, Gina. And seeing the Murphy Brown alum back on a multi-cam with another legend of the style, John Larroquette, was a treat for sitcom lovers. Gina came to New York City to visit her daughter at work. But when she arrived at the courthouse, a mysterious history between Gina and Dan Fielding. It wasn’t a sexual history like Lacretta‘s Gurgs predicted, but instead Gina had a criminal past that she and her late husband, Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), kept secret from their daughter. For years, Gina ran an illegal poker game that led to her facing Dan in Harry’s night court. Harry and Gina eventually connected and fell in love, but Abby (real name Abracadabra Stone) was told a much different story.

Nothing like a blood moon to make things at New York City’s night court crazier than usual. It all goes down in the Tuesday, February 28 episode of NBC‘s Night Court, the revival of the classic 1984-92 sitcom. Between the nutty cases, Judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch) gets an unexpected visitor — her joyful mother, Gina (Murphy Brown’s Faith Ford). However, the heartfelt reunion may be short-lived when it’s revealed that Gina is harboring a big secret that just happens to involve cantankerous public defender Dan Fielding (John Larroquette). While at the 2023 Television Critics Association winter press tour, Rauch shared more about how she comedy landed Ford as Abby’s mother — a casting she says was a no-brainer, noting, “Just talking about Abby’s capturing the essence of Harry [Stone, played by the late Harry Anderson] and who else could she potentially capture the essence of.” Larroquette also gushed about being a fan of Ford,...

John Larroquette’s first acting gig was to provide the opening narration for Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The actor did so as a favour, but a popular internet rumour has long claimed he also received a little weed for his troubles. While speaking with Parade, John Larroquette confirmed the weed rumour as “Totally true.“
“He gave me some marijuana or a matchbox or whatever you called it in those days,” John Larroquette said. “I walked out of the [recording] studio and patted him on the back side and said, ‘Good luck to you!’” The actor said that he first met Tobe Hooper in the summer of 1969 while he was working as a bartender at a small Colorado resort. The pair struck up a friendship, and when Larroquette moved to Los Angeles to start his acting career, Hooper approached him about helping him out on his new movie.

Considering all 10 TV acting Golden Globe categories, the widest age range of the year involves the Best Comedy Actress nominees. 51 years separate reigning champ Jean Smart (71) of HBO Max’s “Hacks” from first-timer Jenna Ortega (20) of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” while the gaps in the other categories range from 27 to 47 years. Smart is looking to break her own record as the all-time oldest recipient of this lead award, but she faces a formidable challenge from Ortega, who could set a new precedent as the youngest winner in this category and second youngest performer to snag a TV Golden Globe of any kind.
Rounding out the 2023 Best Comedy Actress lineup are Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, and Kaley Cuoco, making for an average age of 38. Ortega, who would be the first TV acting Golden Globe winner born during the 21st century, is the second youngest contender in this category’s history, after 19-year-old Patty Duke.

Halloween is never without shenanigans!
On Blockbuster Season 1 Episode 3, the gang must contend with a pair of twin pranksters, a new intern causes grief for Carlos, while Kayla and Connie investigate a potential murder.
It's got all the makings of a classic Halloween episode.
The Damon/Carlos plot is the best part of the whole episode.
It was painfully obvious the entire time that Damon was trying to get Carlos to like him, but Carlos was blind to it due to his own ego about being the smartest film expert.
If he'd stopped to take notice that he and Damon had much in common (and that he was super cute!), they could have gotten together a lot sooner.
I'm glad the show went there, but it's a shame it had to end so quickly (though it feels on-brand for Damon to be in a Halloween-all-year cult).

For people in my feed who've never heard of Street Hawk, following the success of Knight Rider, it was the shameless motorcycle cashgrab. Well, Candace Bergen appears to have been written in as another temporary substitute for Roseanne Barr on The Conners Season 3 Episode 7, but she ain't Roseanne.
Obviously, Bergen is a talented actor, backed by an illustrious career, and her own very successful sitcom, Murphy Brown.
And she isn't posited into The Conners here as a replacement, really.
But using Bergen is another example of introducing a popular female personality to draw attention away from the network and the producers' choice to end Barr's career.
It just doesn't work.
Katey Sagal has been a wonderful choice for this sort of feat.
Her character is not remotely similar to Roseanne Conner, but even so, her presence only reminds us of the huge void that remains the series' biggest problem.
You remind me of somebody. If you told me I'll never amount to anything, it would be downright eerie.
Jackie Permalink: You remind me of somebody.

The Conners is bringing a big name to its cast for a special appearance. Candice Bergen, from Murphy Brown, is set to appear on the mid-season premiere. She will play the mother of Ben, played by Jay R. Ferguson. John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jayden Rey also star in the sitcom which follows the lives of Dan Conner and his children.
Deadline revealed more about Bergen's appearance on the series:
“Bergen will play Ben’s (Jay R. Ferguson) mother, Barb. Their relationship can best be described as cool. Despite being from Lanford, Barb has a superior air and a sharp tongue, but she’s much more agreeable when she’s had a few drinks. Another sitcom great is headed to ABC's The Conners.
Per Deadline, Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen is joining the cast of the Roseanne spinoff in the role of Ben's mother, Barb.
She arrives in Landford following an unexpected death and “unveils shocking information from the past.”
However, Barb is highly judgmental of her son’s relationship with Darlene and is not impressed in the slightest with their pairing.
She has “a superior air and a sharp tongue” but is “much more agreeable when she’s had a few drinks.”
Bergen is, of course, best known for Murphy Brown, a show she led between 1988 and 1998.
A revival aired on CBS in 2018, but the network pulled the plug after 13 episodes because the ratings were not as strong as expected.
The beloved actress most recently appeared opposite Meryl Streep, and Dianne Wiest in the Steven Soderbergh film Let Them All Talk, which premiered on HBO Max on Dec.

It’s been 41 years since Candice Bergen received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Jessica Potter in the 1979 comedy “Starting Over,” opposite Burt Reynolds. Four plus decades later Bergen is back in the Oscar mix for her role as Roberta in “Let Them All Talk,” co-starring Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest. If Bergen were to snag a nomination for the HBO Max film she would set the record for the longest timespan between acting nominations for a woman, at 41 years.
Helen Hayes currently holds the record at 39 years between her Oscar nominated film roles. At the 1932 ceremony she won Best Actress for “The Sin of Madelon Claudet.” It would take nearly four decades for her to be recognized by the academy again, this time for Best Supporting Actress in “Airport,” which she won as well. Celebrating its 60th anniversary on October 3, “The Andy Griffith Show” is one of the most charming comedies in the history of American television. The CBS program was never outside of the top seven in TV ratings throughout its eight-year run and continues a strong six-decade domination in syndication.
Starting with the 1960 debut as a spinoff from “The Danny Thomas Show,” the series starred comedian Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor, sheriff of small-town Mayberry in North Carolina. One of the keys to the popularity was casting Don Knotts as bumbling but well-meaning deputy Barney Fife. Audiences got to know the young Ron Howard as Andy’s son Opie, long before his successful time on “Happy Days” and decades before his Oscar-winning career as a film director and producer.

“Mad About You” would seem an unlikely show to reboot: Unlike fellow 1990s NBC comedy hits “Frasier,” “Friends,” and “Seinfeld,” it’s had no meaningful second life on streaming, and its central story, of a couple living together in New York, is hardly one that feels either proprietary to the show or urgently in need of restaging. Which makes the “Mad About You” reboot, to air exclusively on Spectrum cable systems, a pleasant surprise. It is by its nature unoriginal, and it has little, really, to say about its moment — while most recent reboots have drilled down on aspects of politics in the late 2010s. But in allowing its characters to float unaffected through a soundstage version of lower Manhattan, it feels easygoing, at least.
It’s not much, but it’s more than can be said for reboots of “Will & Grace,” “Roseanne,” and “Murphy Brown,” all of which...
