Canadian actor who was long resident in the UK. He worked as a recreational therapist in a mental hospital in his native country, and claimed he gained more knowledge about acting in that role than he would do later. He arrived in England in 1949 and studied at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After working in radio and theatre, he was given a seven year contract with ABC Television (the British company) after appearing in the prison drama The Last Mile in 1957. He later branched out into films, but was never to fulfill his early promise.- Editor

Walford Hyden was born on 4 July 1892 in Hanley, Staffordshire, England, UK. He was an actor and composer, known for Great Expectations (1946), Danger in Paris (1937) and Once in a New Moon (1934). He died on 16 April 1959 in Marylebone, London, England, UK.- Stanley Matthews was an English footballer. Regarded as one of the greatest players of the British game, he is the only player to have been knighted while still playing football, as well as being the first winner of both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards.
Matthews kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old. Matthews was also the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division (50 years and 5 days) and the oldest player ever to represent the country (42 years and 104 days).
He spent 19 years with Stoke City F.C., playing for the Potters from 1932 to 1947, and again from 1961 to 1965. He helped Stoke to the Second Division title in 1932-33 and 1962-63. Between his two spells at Stoke he spent 14 years with Blackpool F.C., where, after being on the losing side in the 1948 and 1951 FA Cup finals, he helped Blackpool to win the cup with a formidable personal performance in the "Matthews Final" of 1953. In 1956, he was named the winner of the inaugural Ballon d'Or, a prize given to the best European footballer each year. Between 1934 and 1957, he won 54 caps for England, playing in the FIFA World Cup in 1950 and 1954, and winning nine British Home Championship titles. - Writer

Composer, author and recording executive Goddard Lieberson was educated at the University of Washington where he studied with George Frederick McKay, and with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music. He earned honorary degrees from Temple University and the Cleveland School of Music. Joining the Masterworks Department of Columbia Records in 1939, he was named department director, then vice-president of Masterworks Artists-and-Repertoire, executive vice-president in 1949, and from 1956 to 1966, president. Lieberson also became a vice-president of the CBS board of directors, the chairman of the CBS Foundation, a Yale University Library committee member, honorable curator of the Yale Coll.
