Cruel!”, “Completely disgusting!”, “Candy ass!” – these are just some of the barbs that Hollywood stars have unleashed upon each other over the years. But which actors said them? And about whom?
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte might have been romantically entangled in I Love Trouble, but they also had a few tangles – and not the good kind – with each other off-set. And even though Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams went on to date in real life after The Notebook, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for those two, either.
A lot of this is ancient history. And the stars and their fans probably want to move on.
But before we bury the hatchet, why not stir the figurative pot a little more, with this long list of actors who have clashed on set…

Olympia Dukakis, who died on Saturday at age 89, left an indelible impression with a career in film, TV and theater that spanned nearly six decades. Winning the Supporting Actress Oscar for her turn in 1987’s Moonstruck, directed by Norman Jewison, at the age of 56, she also appeared in numerous other iconic films, including Steel Magnolias. The Keanu Reeves we all know and love, the super-agile, sharply dressed, rather taciturn action hero currently death-dealing his way through John Wick Chapter 3, was born 25 years ago, in the summer movie season of 1994 (yes that’s right…25 years ago!).
Until that point, Reeves had been a pin-up presence in arthouse treasures like River’s Edge and Permanent Record whose stock had risen sharply when he and Alex Winter had their first Excellent Adventure in 1988. After that, it soon became impossible to shake off his image as a loveable perma-stoned surf-jockey, never more than five seconds away from a ‘Woah, duuude.’
Attempts at breaking away from this unwanted mould and tackle more highbrow fare like Little Buddha often led to snide critical derision and more than a few titters, especially at his ‘English’ accent in Bram Stoker’s Dracula – ‘I know whhair the bahstud sleeps, in Carfax Abbehh.’

When Basic Instinct hit big, Hollywood went hunting for erotic thrillers, and it found some that kept the romance flowing.
When a movie hits big out of the blue, it’s unwritten Hollywood law that the imitators aren’t too far behind. That’s why when after American Pie brought raunchy teen comedies back to prominence in 1999, the box office was flooded with similar fare for years. The Blair Witch Project, meanwhile, hit out of nowhere, and found footage horror didn't really taper off until 15 years later. The late Wes Craven even wryly noted just how quickly Hollywood had cashed in on the success of 1996’s Scream when the spoof Scary Movie popped out the year after.
Going back to 1992, though, and it was the turn of the erotic thriller to enjoy its resurgence. Paul Verhoeven’s controversial Basic Instinct, off the back of a $3 million budgeted Joe Eszterhas screenplay,...

From a pop culture perspective, private detectives stand for all that’s memorable about film noir. The indifference, the wittiness, and the moral ambiguity that define each urban knight has since become the stuff of parodied legend. We’re talking about the mediators between the crooks and the cops, the embodiment of back alley grayness that’s so tough to pin down. P.I.’s could cooperate with the law if needed, but they could just as soon do business with the bad guys for the right price. To a certain extent, that is – shamus work has always attracted the ignored and the ethical. The Wild West has mythical men with no name, The Asphalt Jungle has names with investigating licenses attached to them. Instead of a poncho and a ten gallon hat, they’re provided a fedora and trench coat.

Those are the words of actress Sharon Gless talking about the gone-but-not-forgotten series, Queer As Folk, the Us take on the British hit series which ran on Showtime from December 2000- August 2005.
And while the actors from the show have been busy in multiple projects – Peter Paige (Emmett) is Exec Producing the ABC Family series, The Fosters, Gale Harold (Brian) has been acting in series like Defiance and The Secret Circle and Randy Harrison (Justin) has concentrated mostly onstage though he appears with Michael Urie in Such Good People, which is currently on the film festival circuit – is there a chance we could see them, along with co-stars Hal Sparks, Scott Lowell, Thea Gill, Michelle Clunie and, of course, multi Emmy-winner Sharon Gless, reprise their roles?
According to Gless, who talked to TheBacklot last week, the answer is yes.

Before he was Tam Honks, he was Fahrst… Fahrst Gump. The Greenbow-born-and-bred witness to history may not have been the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was all heart — and (once those braces fell away) legs. Based on Winston Groom’s fantastical novel, Robert Zemeckis’s decades-spanning movie touched on nearly ever major cultural milestone in the second half of the 20th century: Vietnam and the March on Washington, Watergate and “S— happens” shirts, Elvis and world-class ping pong, and on and on. Yet, it was solid as a rock while feeling light as a feather. It was also...

Science fiction, man. I love it. But comic books make me want to hate it. I mean, I get that comic books aren’t really a literary medium. They can be, but they’re read mostly by people avoiding the commitment and sometimes challenge of a more rigorous, if still speculative, format, namely prose. Now I’m not going to pretend that prose Sf&F is always a step up from comics and, in fact, there’s pretty much an equal ratio of turds to gold (there’s some kind of law for this, I think). But so much more effort is put into the “science” part of science fiction in literature than it is in comics, and that seems to be an unfortunate result of the assumption (perhaps correctly) most comic book writers make that their audience isn’t interested in “harder” sci-fi or fantasy. But they try at it anyway sometimes,...

This week on our favorite radio show, Where Monsters Dwell welcomes back to the program comic writer Kel Symons. You’ll remember Kel’s work on last year’s I Love Trouble from Image Comics. Kel is back in 2014 and he’s bringing a new book with him, The Mercenary Sea, also from Image Comics.
The guys will also be discussing the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead - which I loved, by the way, guys. Just saying.
Update: Listen to episode 280 now!
If you have a question for Kel Symons or for Wmd hosts Remington J. Osborne, Monster Mike, and/or producer Redshirt Ryan, feel free to post it on their Wmd Facebook wall or give the show a call during the broadcast at 506-452-6056 (yes, they’re in Canada).

It's a fallacy that everyone gets on together on a movie set. Just as in an everyday office, some people get on better with others. That's as you might expect. Summer's over, everyone! Especially at the box office. One of this weekend's wide releases, Getaway, currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating south of 5 percent. Five percent! Another one is a concert documentary about the boy band One Direction. Slim pickings. But it could be worse. It honestly could be so much worse. We've taken a look at every summer weekend from the past twenty years and picked eight that are strong contenders for rock bottom. (We're talking qualitatively here — box office wasn't really a factor in these choices.) Please offer up your own suggestions.July 1, 1994* The Shadow * Blown Away* I Love Trouble* Baby's Day Out* Little Big League These days, the Fourth of July weekend is sacrosanct for Hollywood. For many a young rising star, there comes the time to prove their worth at the ever-enigmatic box office all on their own. Any young gun can co-star in a successful feature with a proven star by his or her side (see potential stars Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds ride Denzel’s coattails in Unstoppable and Safe House, respectively). To prove your name is valuable above a film’s title, you must lead it, meaning you are both the film’s star and the film’s marketing campaign. At some point (usually early on), these ambitious pseudo-celebs must go for it, headlining a somewhat small, but significant, studio picture in the hopes of finding an audience they’ve been told by their agents and managers they have already built.
Sometimes its works. Other times, it does not. In honor of the currently-in-theaters Premium Rush, led by the potentially-bankable star Joseph Gordon-Levitt,...

(Mugshot via DListed – thanks to @swalks!) Today might seem like any other day to you. But to human grizzly bear Nick Nolte, today marks the 71st year of his existence on Earth. And all things considered, he looks like your average 71 year old man who has lived at once both the easiest and roughest life one can hope for. Looking at Nolte now, it’s hard to imagine that there was a tie where he was Hot As Sh*T. Oh… but there was. Back in the day, Nolte could get it. In fact, he could pretty much get it up untillll 1994′s I Love Trouble. (Also, I hear what you’re saying right now, and yes, even hot homeless Nick Nolte in Down And Out In Beverly Hills could get it.) Sure, these days Nick Nolte looks like something I would find on my foot after a hike, but guys,...

How big a Julia Roberts fan are you? Seen "Pretty Woman" 10 times? Memorized a scene or two from "Erin Brockovich"? Asked your stylist to give you the "Lyle Lovett," hoping Julia would notice? Amateurs, all of ya.
Meet Miljenko Parserisas Bukovic, whose name roughly translate in English to "Bats**t crazy." The Chilean fan saw "Erin Brockovich" and, presumably sparked by Roberts' legal sassiness, got himself a tattoo of her face. Then another. And another.
He's up to 82.
Apparently every tattoo was inspired by a scene in one of Roberts' films. Even "I Love Trouble," man? Really?
"I think it's great. Miljenko is an artist whose body is his canvas," Bukovic said, quoting his imaginary girlfriend. When reached for comment, Roberts could be heard dry heaving and crossing Chile off her getaway list. Pics, in all their creepy inky goodness, below.

Saul Rubinek had a major epiphany during the intermission—yes, intermission—of Murray Schisgal's play "Luv"—starring Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson, and Alan Arkin. At the time, Rubinek was a young Canadian actor visiting New York City. "People in the lobby were talking exactly like the people on stage," he recalls. "That had not yet happened in Canada. Theater was still being imported from America or Britain." Though Rubinek had no way of knowing that within a few years he'd be performing in homegrown Canadian theater, he was clearly drawn to the authenticity of indigenous plays. "I have nothing against imported art," he asserts, "but if that's all you're doing, it is decadent." Rubinek is refreshingly straightforward. Consider this: Though he is delighted to be playing Dr. Arthur "Artie" Nelson, the mysterious yet methodical Secret Service agent on Syfy's "Warehouse 13"—a program that evokes "The X-Files" with a...

"I have to orgasm onstage, and it's the bravest thing I've ever done in my life." So asserts Sharon Gless, who is talking about her role in "A Round-Heeled Woman," a true story that she optioned nine years ago. Slated to run through Feb. 7 at San Francisco's Theater Artaud, the play by Jane Prowse is based on the best-selling memoir by Jane Juska, a former teacher who put a personal ad in The New York Review of Books saying that before she turned 67, she wanted to have a lot of sex with a man she actually liked. "This is a woman who had not been touched in 30 years," says Gless, who has never shied away from risky roles, if she felt they were worthwhile. American producers wouldn't come near it, she says, but Gless persisted, undaunted, until she found British producers who wanted to underwrite the piece. "Britain seems to...

John Krasinski (Leatherheads, The Office) has joined the cast of an untitled comedy being written and directed by Nancy Meyers (Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want). Krasinski is in good company as the cast includes Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep. The film centers around a romantic love triangle, with Baldwin and Martin vying for the affection of Streep. Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan and Hunter Parrish also star. Scott Rudin (There Will be Blood) is producing for Universal. Krasinski committed to make the film during his hiatus from NBC’s The Office. He will next be seen starring in the Sam Mendes-directed Away We Go, which Focus Features releases in June. Meyers’ screenwriting credits include Jumpin' Jack Flash, Baby Boom, the Julia Roberts rom-com I Love Trouble and the two Father of the Bride films. Production is slated to start in the spring.
