Roman Polanski was cleared of defamation charges in France in a case tied to a rape allegation brought by the British actress Charlotte Lewis.
As The New York Times reports, Lewis accused Polanski of raping her in 1983, when she was 16, during a casting session for the film Pirates at his home in Paris (Lewis later appeared in the film). In a 2019 interview with the French magazine Paris Match, Polanski denied Lewis’ allegation, calling it an “odious lie”; he also brought up an old 1999 tabloid interview in which Lewis spoke positively about him.

A French court has dismissed charges against French-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski that he defamed UK actor Charlotte Lewis after she accused him of sexually assaulting her as a teenager.
Lewis told a Paris court in March that she had been subjected to a “smear campaign” after speaking up about alleged sexual abuse by Polanski in the 1980.
The actor originally made her allegations in a press conference in Cannes in 2010, saying Polanski had taken advantage of her in the worst possible way during a casting meeting in Paris in 1983 when she was 16 years old. She would later go on to star in his 1986 film Pirates.
Polanski denied the accusations in an interview in French celebrity magazine Paris Match in 2019, calling them a “heinous lie.”
He also cited a 1999 News of the World interview in which Lewis was quoted as saying that she desired the director more than he had her.

A French court has acquitted filmmaker Roman Polanski of defamation charges brought by British actor Charlotte Lewis, who’d claimed that he raped her when she was a child, the New York Times has reported.
Lewis, now 56, had accused the now 90-year-old filmmaker of sexually assaulting her when she was 16, during a casting session at his Paris home. The French court was not ruling on that accusation. Instead, it was dealing with a 2019 interview with French magazine Paris Match in which Polanski had dismissed Lewis’ accusation of being a “heinous lie.” The court ruled on whether Polanski had overstepped the bounds of free speech by dismissing her account of the alleged events.
The trial kicked off in March, when the Franco-Polish filmmaker was sued by Lewis, who claimed he defamed her in the interview. Lewis first came forward with her allegations against Polanski in 2010.

Thierry Fremaux skirted politically charged questions and tried to shift the focus back to the films amid an onslaught of questions from global media about looming festival worker strikes and #MeToo rumours on the eve of Cannes’ kickoff on Monday afternoon.
“Before, we only talked about cinema. Our biggest concern was the films – will they be loved or will they be hated?” Cannes’ general delegate recalled.
While he hinted at the backlash over the selection of Maiwenn’s Jeanne Du Barry starring Johnny Depp to open last year’s festival – “Last year it’s no secret there were controversies” – he explained that this year,...

As a #MeToo wave looked to rock the 77th Cannes Film Festival with rumors swirling that filmmakers with films at the event would be tagged, Thierry Frémaux emphasized his event isn’t about polemics, rather the picture that’s on the screen. If there are controversies during Cannes “we try to avoid them” he said today during an afternoon presser.
“Last year, as you know, we had a few polemics, and we realized it, and so this year we decided to host a festival without polemics to make sure that the main interest for us all to be here is cinema,” Frémaux said. “So if there are other polemics, it doesn’t concern us.”
“It’s about the movies and whether they deserve or not, in aesthetic or artistic terms, to be there,” Frémaux said. “There is no ideology guiding the selection committee.”

Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch has said the event is paying close attention to the evolving #MeToo situation in France in an interview with celebrity magazine Paris Match.
The publication of the Q&a on Thursday came amid rising speculation within the French media and local film industry that a raft of #MeToo allegations is set to break in the lead up and during the upcoming 81st edition of the festival, running from May 14 to 25.

Arnaud Lagardère, head of Vivendi-owned French publishing and travel retail giant Lagardère Group, has been forced to resign as CEO of the company following his indictment related to accusations of embezzlement.
“This indictment essentially concerns facts relating to personal companies wholly owned by Arnaud Lagardère and not involving any Lagardère group companies,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
“In the context of his indictment, Arnaud Lagardère has been provisionally banned from holding executive office, a measure which he is contesting and against which he intends to appeal, but which nevertheless will oblige him to resign his executive offices within the group, despite the appeal,” it added.

France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron, will be the subject of a biopic series produced by French mini-major Gaumont.
The six-part show is being penned by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, who previously teamed on the thriller series “J’ai menti.”
Titled “Brigitte, une femme libre”, the series will chart the life of French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife. Gaumont is keeping the plot of the show under wraps and will be announcing the cast in the next few weeks.
Brigitte Macron’s life story surely provides plenty of material for a TV series. She met Emmanuel Macron while teaching theater at the Catholic high school Providence in Amiens. Macron was then 15 years old, while she was 40 and married with three children. In a recent interview with Paris Match, Brigitte Macron talked about her anxiety over their age gap, saying that her “head was in a mess” after she fell in...

Former French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand, who was a high-profile and sometimes controversial figure on France’s cultural scene, died on Thursday at the age of 76, his family announced.
Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.
His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.
He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.
After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.
It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.

Franco-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski is on trial in Paris today (March 5) to face allegations that he defamed British actress Charlotte Lewis, who accused him of sexual abuse.
The 90-year-old director currently resides in Paris, but is not due to appear in court according to his lawyers. Lewis, who starred in the director’s 1986 film Pirates, claimed in May 2010 that Polanski had sexually assaulted her during an audition at his Paris home in 1983 when she was just 16 years old.
In December of 2019, Polanski refuted her accusations as an “odious lie” in an interview with Paris Match magazine and cited inconsistencies in Lewis’ account of the events.

Roman Polanski will be tried in Paris today over allegations that he defamed British actor Charlotte Lewis.
Lewis brought the claim against the 90-year-old filmmaker, claiming he defamed her by calling her sexual assault allegations against him a “heinous lie” in a 2019 interview with Paris Match magazine. Polanski is not due to appear in court.
In 2010, Lewis accused Polanski of sexually assaulting her “in the worst possible way” in 1983 when she was in Paris for a casting appointment, aged 16. She later appeared in Polanski’s 1986 film Pirates. Polanski denied the allegations in the 2019 Paris Match interview and is said to have referenced a quote attributed to Lewis from a 1999 interview with the now-defunct outlet News of the World, in which she allegedly remarked: “I wanted to be his mistress (…) I probably desired him more than he did me.”
Lewis disputed the quote’s accuracy in 2010 and subsequently filed the suit.

Alain Delon has been placed under legal protection amid concerns about the 88-year-old acting icon’s health and well-being as his children squabble over his medical and living arrangements.
French media reported on Monday that a guardianship judge made the decision this week.

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation for possibly jumping the gun in Vivendi’s pending acquisition of Lagardère, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate.
Vivendi, which is owned by conservative billionaire Vincent Bolloré and is the parent company of pay TV giant Canal+ Group, has a 57.35% stake in Lagardere. The Paris-headquartered company launched an Opa to acquire the remaining stake in Lagardere in 2022. After raising anti-trust concerns, the European Commission eventually gave its support for the acquisition of Lagardere on June 9 on the condition that Vivendi sells its publishing group Editis, as well as its stake in Gala magazine. Gisèle Galante recalls a recent evening in which she and her husband first watched Dodge City, the 1939 Michael Curtiz-directed western starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. As de Havilland’s daughter, born 17 years after that film’s premiere, Galante was struck equally by her mother’s beauty and her performance: “I had never seen it before, but she was so, so pretty,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And even though it wasn’t what you would call a meaty role, she was excellent. There’s still so much for me to discover, more of my mother’s films that I have not seen.”

OpinionThe box office fate of the last few films written by Udaykrishna has more than made it clear that the audience is no longer tickled pink by such regressive, formulaic narratives.Even as a one-liner, Christopher, directed by B Unnikrishnan and written by Udaykrishna, sounds like a fan service superstar vehicle. Mammootty plays a vigilante cop who shoots down rapists in encounters. Considering that writer Udaykrishna (and director B Unnikrishnan) has only crafted hypermasculine narratives featuring men playing the proverbial saviour to women, the execution of the film was on predictable lines – long and mid shots of the stoic hero strutting around the screen in slow-mo, women desperately looking up to him, one-dimensional antagonists, and other shenanigans to glorify the fan vehicle. As usual, despite there being four women actively occupying screen space, they were reduced to mere props. That includes Sneha who plays Home Secretary, Aishwarya Lakshmy as an investigative lawyer,...

Owen Roizman, the cinematographer who shot some of the most notable films of the 1970s New Hollywood era, has died. The Hollywood Reporter confirms the news that the Oscar-nominated director of photography, who worked often with William Friedkin, Lawrence Kasdan, and Sydney Pollack, passed away in his home in Encino on Friday night, at the age of 86.
Roizman shot over 30 films and music videos across his decades-long career, including some of the most acclaimed cultural touchstones of the '70s and '80s. Friedkin's "The French Connection," a movie that famously includes one of cinema's most exhilarating car chase sequences, was only the second film Roizman ever worked on as a cinematographer.
In an interview with American Cinematographer, the artist once explained that he undercranked the camera for the famous (and infamous) chase scene, using only 18 to 20 frames per second instead of the typical 24 in order to give the effect of high speed.

Ahead of Sunday’s world premiere of documentary “1341 Frames of Love and War,” which plays in Berlinale Special, Variety spoke to the film’s writer-director Ran Tal, and Israeli war photographer Micha Bar-Am, who is the subject of the film.
In some ways “Frames” continues Tal’s interest in Israeli history evident in his previous work, “What If? Ehud Barak on War and Peace,” which centered on the former prime minister of Israel. Bar-Am was born in Berlin in 1930, but grew up in what became Israel, and across a five decade-long career as a photographer he documented many of the major episodes – in particular the wars – in the life of the young country, founded in 1948.
“I wanted to do two films: one about a player in history […] and the second one should be about the witness,” Tal says. The filmmaker got in touch with Bar-Am, who showed him his archive...

When in a romantic relationship, it’s never a good time to break up, nor to be the one getting dumped. The hilarious cold open of director Jason Orley’s rom-com “I Want You Back” begins with much promise, highlighting the indignities of the separate but equally humiliating fracturing of our two protagonists’ long-term loves. And while the premise of these two broken-hearted strangers finding each other and hatching a foolhardy scheme to win back their exes is quick to ramp up, the midsection plateaus when it should percolate with the pair’s plan taking form, or rather not quite manifesting correctly. Still, despite some pacing issues and predictable plotlines, the film keeps us wholeheartedly engaged with well-drawn, well-performed characters, grounded shenanigans and sweet, sentimental commentary on heartache.

Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus Group, is set to acquire a 17.5% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from Amber Capital in the next few days.
Vivendi will own 45.1% of the Lagardère capital following the acquisition of 24,685,108 shares at a price of €24.10 ($27.27) per share. The company said the transaction will not imply any cash transfers from either party since Amber Capital will keep the funds received as cash collateral from Vivendi.
If approved by regulatory authorities, the transaction will place Vivendi above the 30% share capital and voting right threshold in Lagardere. As such, Vivendi said it will make a takeover bid at the same price, €24.10 per share, for the remaining stake in Lagardère on Feb. 2022. Other shareholders in Lagardere include Arnaud Lagardere, as well as Qatar Holding and Financière Agache, the holding of Lvmh president Bernard Arnault.

Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus and Universal Music Group (Umg), is planning to acquire an additional 17.93% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from its leading shareholder Amber Capital.
The move comes as Vivendi is getting ready to list Umg, its biggest money-making asset and the world’s largest music company, at the Amsterdam stock exchange on Sept. 21.
Vivendi first entered into Lagardere’s capital with a 10.6% stake in April 2020, when the company’s president Arnaud Lagardère, who inherited the illustrious banner from his father, Jean-Luc Lagardère, clashed with Amber Capital and was threatened to be pushed aside.
With Amber Capital’s stake, Vivendi will own 45.1% of Lagardere’s share capital and 36.1% of the voting rights. Amber Capital has accepted Vivendi’s offer to pay €24.10 ($28.3) per share for its 25,305,448 shares.

With the To All the Boys series set to wrap up this week, it’s time to talk about what the next big Netflix young adult romance adaptation could be—because we now know it’s not going to be The Summer I Turned Pretty. The streamer has been leaning much more heavily into the teen romance genre in recent years, which means some iconic YA romance getting screen adaptations. On that note, it’s recently come to my attention that Anna and the French Kiss, the debut novel from author Stephanie Perkins that follows an American teen to Paris for her senior year of high school, is 20 years old. It’s a foundational text of the genre, and it’s long past time it gets the screen treatment. Now that mainstream content creators are recognizing the power of romance as a genre, where is the Anna and the French...

While the Cannes Film Festival is basking in the glory of having world premiered Bong Joon-Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite,” along with many other Oscar contenders, the fate of its presidency is up in the air.
Pierre Lescure, who took over from Gilles Jacob in 2015 as Cannes president, and is running for a third term, was perceived as a shoe-in for reelection considering his solid track record at the helm of the fest, alongside artistic director Thierry Fremaux. But rumors have been swirling in France about another candidate, Mercedes Erra, a top-ranking advertising executive, who is being pushed by the French government, according to the local magazine Paris Match.
Erra, who runs the Havas-owned French advertising agency Betc, is foreign to the world of cinema. However, she may be considered for this position by the culture minister as she’s a prominent advocate for diversity and gender parity, and the government...

Kevin Kline first rose to fame on the New York stage where he has continued to appear with 16 Broadway roles. He impressed critics and won the 1978 Tony Award for the musical “On the Twentieth Century,” which gave him a highly comedic role with pratfalls. That led to other roles on Broadway, most notably as The Pirate King in a revival of “The Pirates of Penzance,” which brought him a second Tony, this time as a lead actor. In 2017, he he would add a third Tony to his mantle for the lead character in “Present Laughter.”
Kline was 35 before he ventured into the world of film, but he did it in a highly notable way playing opposite Meryl Streep in her legendary Oscar-winning role in “Sophie’s Choice.” Streep dedicated her Oscar to Kline and Peter MacNicol since it was their eyes she looked into while giving her highly acclaimed performance.

Fukrey Returns
Starring Richa Chadha, Pulkit Samrat, Ali Fazal, Manjot Singh,Varun Sharma
Directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba
There is a kind of quirky credibility in the way the characters of Fukrey have grown on us ever since they were seen in the first Fukrey film. It’s been nearly five years. But we haven’t forgotten Hunny, Choocha, Lali, Pandit and last but not the least, the woman who won’t be put on a leash, Bholi Punjaban.
Please note, I make no mention of Zafar, played by Ali Fazal, as his character remains strangely sketchy, unfinished, incomplete. He is a Fukrey on the look-out for a more fleshed-out platform of expression.
Strange, because the other principal players in this prickly parody of Capital consumerism are so vividly etched, we feel we know them inside-out. Fukrey Returns acquaints us with the bang-gang even better than the first Fukrey film.

Not exactly her teenage dream. Katy Perry opened up about her first kiss — and it wasn’t as romantic as you may think.
“My first French kiss was in sixth grade in Big Bear, California. I was hanging out with this girl form church who had a bit of a reputation. She had a coed party and I was not allowed to go to a coed party until eighth grade. But I went anyway,” the “Swish Swish” singer, 32, told W Magazine on Thursday, August 10.
Perry recalled playing spin the bottle at the party and when it was her turn to lock lips, she felt like there was a “wet fish” trapped inside her mouth. “That was my first kiss,” she told the outlet. “When you’re in sixth grade, there’s no art to French kissing.

Then something magical happened. Call it a Thanksgiving comic book miracle. It was no less than that. So I hope to be reset at Bleeding Cool, ComicMix and my site Michael Davis World. Mdw had an outstanding and loyal following.
I messed that up big time a week after I began talks to partner with a massive site. Shit. That was stupid.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. My depression was/is a motherfucker.
Once I become fixated on something I just kept at it regardless if I’d achieved my goals.

The cinematic kiss stems back to the Wizard of Menlo Park himself, Thomas Edison, who featured the affectation in his 1896 film aptly titled, “The Kiss.” Though considered controversial and later censored, Edison’s film was also the most popular from his studio that year. Now the film is historically relevant (how times change) and set a precedent for the acceptance of public displays of affection for the future. In BFI’s new video essay, they divulge into the amorous history of exchanging a buss, and explore how its evolved alongside the movies. With Nikhil Advani’s Katti Batti, expectations are high for Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy to deliver another great soundtrack since the melodious gem of D-Day. It’s a big release for Imran Khan, who’s come back after his paternity leave and Kangana Ranaut, who’s following up the critical acclaim of Queen. Since it’s Advani’s second film of the month, we can be assured that Katti Batti will be a better soundtrack than the formulaic songs of Hero.
