Mark Wahlberg is a Dorchester, Massachusetts native who has brought to life, in the past two decades, a wide variety of characters that have gone far beyond fighting CG robots in the “Transformers” movies.
Wahlberg got his start as a rapper, as the frontman for the group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, but it was his good looks rather than musical ability that brought him notoriety as the premier Calvin Klein underwear model in the 1990s. From there it was a quick jump to movies, with the young actor getting his big break as the lead in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Boogie Nights” in 1997.
Since then Wahlberg has been working steadily with such A-list directors as Martin Scorsese, Peter Jackson (“The Lovely Bones”), Tim Burton (“Planet of the Apes”), Ridley Scott (“All the Money in the World”) and David O. Russell.

1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.
With the movie turning twenty-five, the film’s director Stephen Sommers, revisited the film during an extended sit-down with THR. For those who may not be aware of his career, Sommers made a whole slew of super-fun adventure movies in the 90s, including a really solid re-imagining of The Jungle Book for Disney and the creature feature Deep Rising. If you’d have to guess, you would not probably get closer to the movie that terrified George Clooney. Of course, in our heads, Batman & Robin would pop up to be the scariest movie in his career but it was far from it.
George Clooney as Batman
Certainly, Clooney would hate to talk about his disastrous 1997 DC movie playing Batman against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s supervillain Mr. Freeze. However, the decorated Hollywood actor has opened up about the movie that sent shivers down his spine.

With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. The Irish performer, recognized as best actor for his one-man West End show, “Vanya,” previously was named best actor at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Film Awards for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.” He’s the first person to win lead actor Critics’ Circle prizes in both film and television in the same year.
“It’s a thrilling delight,” Scott says. “I’ve been involved with both film and theater ever since I started acting when I was 17 years old. I’ve always worked between the two mediums. So to have these two projects, which were very dear to me, be recognized is more than I could have wished for.”
In the case of “Vanya,” Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” Scott played all of the show’s eight roles. That was a herculean task,...

David O. Russell doesn’t have a perfect track record when it comes to dealing with people, and he certainly isn’t known as a people pleaser. Over the years, many Hollywood actors have spoken out about their experiences with the director, and George Clooney is no exception. When the two worked together on Three Kings, Clooney described the experience as “truly, without exception, the worst experience of my life.” Here’s why.

George Clooney’s Experience Working with David O. Russell
Considering David O. Russell‘s track record, the director, as he often does, managed to rub George Clooney the wrong way too. There were some instances on set that were truly unbearable for both of them, as well as for those around them in the crew, but there was one occasion where things went a bit too far.

It is always heartwarming to hear stories about siblings helping one another, especially in the entertainment industry, where competition can be fierce. Donnie Wahlberg, the elder brother of Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg, recently revealed that he invested around $500,000 in the Ted star’s music career in the early 1990s.
The Fear star’s music career took off thanks in part to his elder brother’s investment, which also kept the former “out of the streets”. Yes, it may come as no surprise to some that Mark Wahlberg has a lengthy and diverse résumé. And no, we are not discussing his crimes in movies. In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

You won’t have to battle your bladder to watch A24’s upcoming action epic “Civil War.”
The Alex Garland movie, set in the near future as the United States breaks out into violent conflict, has a runtime of 109 minutes, despite reports to the contrary. While IMDb incorrectly lists a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, A24 confirmed to Variety that the film is under two hours long.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, the movie puts viewers in the heat of a new American civil war. The trailer opens with scenes of destruction across the country, along with news reports that “19 states have seceded.”
“Citizens of America, the so-called Western forces of Texas and California have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military,” Offerman, who portrays the U.S. President, says in the trailer.

The live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho is off to a strong start on Netflix. With only five episodes under its belt, there’s still more source material for the series to adapt. Netflix has yet to renew the series for a second season, but early signs suggest a renewal could soon be coming.

The series was led by Alice in Borderland producer Kazutaka Sakamoto. Akira Morii (Assassination Classroom) served as producer on the project, and Ryo Sakaguchi (Game of Thrones) is SFX’s supervisor. Netflix’s internal studio, Scanline VFX, worked on the visual effects. Yutaka Yamada (Vinland Saga) composed the series.

Christian Bale has worked alongside controversial filmmaker David O. Russell on a couple of projects. But because of their strong personalities, the pair couldn’t help clash every now and then behind the scenes.
Christian Bale and David O. Russell were used to butting heads
Russell is known for his hot temper almost as much as he’s known for his filmmaking. The director has even thrown tantrums with the actors he’s worked with. His American Hustle co-star Amy Adams once confided that she ended up crying because of Russell’s attitude towards her. Clooney, who worked with Russell on Three Kings, also had a physical altercation with the director because of his behavior.
On occasion, he’s even found himself fighting with his frequent collaborator Christian Bale. But Bale confided their conflict only helped strengthen their projects.

Mark Wahlberg was better known for his Calvin Klein underwear ads and his Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch music career than for his acting (“Fear”) when he accepted the role of aspiring porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.” The 1997 drama made Wahlberg a bonafide movie star, but he wasn’t immediately sold on the role. Speaking to Cigar Aficionado magazine, Wahlberg admitted he feared “Boogie Nights” might exploit him.
“When I first heard about the film, the subject matter was not appealing to me,” Wahlberg said. “I came from the whole Marky Mark thing, pulling down my pants, Calvin Klein underwear — I didn’t know if this was just the next level of exploiting me and now all of a sudden we have to lose the underwear.”
Wahlberg continued, “My agents kept pushing me. So I read the first 25, 30 pages, and I kind of put it down.

Harmony Korine, the director of cult classics like “Spring Breakers” and “Gummo”, has teamed up with rapper Travis Scott for a new film that was shot entirely in infrared. The film, titled “Aggro Dr1ft”, is produced by A24 and will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023.
“Aggro Dr1ft” is described as an action-oriented film that stars Scott and Spanish actor Jordi Mollà, who has appeared in films like “Bad Boys II” and “Riddick”. The plot of the 80-minute film is still unknown, but the first production still released by Venice shows Scott and Mollà wearing masks, body armor, and guns in a dark and surreal setting.

Growing up in the UK in the '80s and '90s, Channel 4 was an exciting new alternative to the staid safe havens of our other three terrestrial channels. Not only did it offer daring and sometimes controversial content that the BBC and ITV wouldn't touch, it also gave an exotic taster of global sport to our screens. We were introduced to the delights of Mongolian Yak Polo and Irish hurling on "Trans World Sport," while "Gazetta Football Italia" brought us a sexy European version of soccer after the success of the World Cup in 1990.
Then there was coverage of American Football. Channel 4 hooked many British viewers with the sport in the year it went live in 1982. From that moment, NFL grew in popularity as an alternative to our hooligan-blighted national game. By the time I first tuned in to see what all the fuss was about, they were done with explaining the rules.

Where, when, and how you can watch “Yellowstone” has always been a bit confusing. It normally airs on [Parmaount Network], where it is the most popular show on television. However, the show doesn’t stream on Paramount+, but instead is available on-demand on Peacock. But, for three days starting on May 27, the first three seasons will be available on a free linear channel on Paramount-owned Pluto TV.

It’s hard to imagine that the unforgettable on-screen connection between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, including their iconic dance sequence, was almost derailed.
The main roles in the comedy-drama were first offered to Anne Hathaway and Mark Wahlberg, who were set to play Tiffany and Pat, respectively. But after Hathaway dropped out of the project, director David O. Russell cast Cooper instead of his good friend, Wahlberg, who reportedly wanted a special clause in the event that Hathaway backed out.

Joel Schumacher was an immensely talented filmmaker whose slick visual style earned him loads of high-profile assignments during the 1980s and '90s. He could deliver the sensuous perfume commercial aesthetic of A-listers like Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Adrian Lyne sans the auteurist demand for total creative control. He possessed the crowd-pleasing instincts of Tony Scott. He worked with the biggest movie stars of the day: Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Mr. T. He discovered Colin Farrell with 2000's "Tigerland." He both saved and killed the "Batman" franchise.
That Schumacher had any kind of career is something of a miracle. He survived a wild youth that included a near-fatal meth addiction, and by his own admission, thousands of sexual partners as the 1980s AIDS epidemic took hold. This experience gave him valuable insight as he landed major studio assignments packed with volatile young talent. On "St. Elmo's Fire,...

"Mayfair Witches," the new AMC+ series based on the book trilogy "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" by Anne Rice, has been looking well outside the realm of supernatural TV dramas for inspiration in season 1. You wouldn't necessarily expect to hear showrunner Esta Spalding and executive producer Michelle Ashford namecheck a 1999 Gulf War movie, but that's exactly what they did in Vanessa Armstrong's /Film interview with the duo.
"Mayfair Witches" stars Alexandra Daddario as Dr. Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who uncovers her own family link to a dynasty of witches. She's unaware of her powers at first, and this leads to her looking inside people's brains and "popping arteries like bubble gum," as Danielle Ryan put it in her "Mayfair Witches" review. No need for an endoscopy when you have a witch on the case who can show the audience what a person's dying body looks like inside.

This post contains spoilers for the first three episodes of "Mayfair Witches."
"Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches" is AMC's second installment in what they hope will be an expanding Anne Rice universe. The story follows a surgeon named Rowan (Alexandria Daddario) who finds out she's actually from a multi-generational family of witches, with the first season adapting "The Witching Hour," Anne Rice's thousand-page first novel in her "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" series.
Converting such a long book into eight episodes is no small feat, and when I talked with "Mayfair Witches" showrunner Esta Spalding during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, she acknowledged that not everything in the first book made it into the season. "We had a whiteboard that was the greatest hits that we had to use, and of course we couldn't use them all," she told me.
There are, however, a lot of memorable moments...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Bad Batch.
While the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series was a deep dive into the galactic civil war that raged between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, it didn’t delve too deeply into its aftermath. That’s where sequel series The Bad Batch comes in. Taking place directly after the end of the Prequel Trilogy and the rise of the Empire, this series about a renegade squad of mutant clone troopers explores how the galaxy changes once its under the Emperor’s boot.
Season 1 followed the titular Bad Batch (officially known as Clone Force 99) as they turned to a life as mercenaries after defecting from the Empire. While completing jobs for their new employer, cantina owner Cid, the Batch must also evade the Imperial forces who are hunting them. Along the way, they witness the many...

Spoilers follow for "The Bad Batch" season 2 premiere - "Spoils of War" and "Ruins of War."
The boys of Clone Force 99 (Dee Bradley Baker), "The Bad Batch" return for their second season on Disney+ today.
For those hazy on the Bad Batch, they're a group of genetically modified clones who served as a special forces team during the Clone Wars. Order 66 didn't hit them like the rest of the clone troopers and they ended up back on Kamino, confused and forced to test their loyalty. Eventually, they escaped the clutches of the Empire and took Omega, a Jango clone unlike any other, with them.
Season 1 culminated in the orbital bombardment of their home planet of Kamino and further pushed them into the shadows. As season 2 opens, some time has passed since the destruction of Kamino that capped off the last episode of the previous season. The clones are still avoiding the Empire,...

‘Avatar 2’ Star Cliff Curtis on Watching Preview Footage With James Cameron: “Stunned Beyond Belief”
Click here to read the full article.
New Zealand star Cliff Curtis is having a pretty solid 2022. The actor’s most recent feature, Muru, the acclaimed Māori-language action drama, became New Zealand’s highest-grossing film this year after its release in September. Later, it was selected as the country’s official contender for the Oscars in the best international film category. If Muru ends up getting beaten at the New Zealand box office before year’s end, though, it will undoubtedly be by James Cameron’s long-awaited juggernaut Avatar: The Way of Water, opening Dec. 16 — and also co-starring Curtis.
Curtis made his screen debut in a small supporting role in Jane Campion’s Palme d’Or winning period drama The Piano back in 1993, and he has been a pillar of the New Zealand film community nearly ever since. His filmography includes a running list of landmarks in recent Kiwi cinema,...

Name an actor — almost any working actor you can think of — and there is a fairly good chance they are in David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. Christian Bale, the intense thespian who’s done his best work with the equally all-or-nothing-at-all auteur? No surprise that he’s front and center here. Ditto Russell rep-company regular Robert De Niro. Rising star John David Washington? Yup, him too. Margot Robbie and Anya Taylor-Joy, both current candidates for “It girl” status circa 2022? Present and accounted for. How about Chris Rock, or Rami Malek,...

As quirky, messy, and undisciplined as the work of director David O. Russell can be, when he nails his material—which to be fair is more often than not—he can really get at the heart of human relationships and bigger thematic concerns with great humor and empathy. See Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings, and a good chunk of American Hustle, for prime examples of this. On the other hand, when Russell drops the ball, the results can be tedious at best and unbearable at worst. His first film in seven years, Amsterdam, falls somewhere on the spectrum between the two, and probably more toward tedious, if only because one’s interest is sustained by the movie’s incredible cast and less by the convoluted and incoherent story that they’re working through.

Christian Bale Acted as a ‘Mediator’ Between Amy Adams and David O. Russell on ‘American Hustle’ Set
Christian Bale has collaborated with director David O. Russell on numerous Oscar-winning films, but his behind-the-scenes role turns out to be “mediator” between his fellow actors and Russell.
Bale revealed to GQ that in the case of the 2013 film “American Hustle,” he was a mediator between co-star Amy Adams and Russell.
“Look, if I feel like we got anywhere close — and you only ever get somewhere close to achieving; our imagination is too incredible to ever entirely achieve it — but if you get anywhere close to it, and when you’re working with people of the crazy creative talent of Amy or of David, there are gonna be upsets,” Bale said. “But they are fucking phenomenal.”
The Academy Award winner added, “Also, you got to remember, it was the nature of the characters as well. Right? Those characters were not people who back down from anything, right?”

Welcome back to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast, I am your host Valerie Complex — assistant editor and film writer at Deadline. Had some technical difficulties so that’s why this latest episode didn’t publish Tuesday, but it’s a new day, and here we are.
On today’s episode, I chat with native New Zealanders actor Cliff Curtis and director Tearapa Kahi about the new film Muru, which had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this year. In the discussion, Curtis and Kahi talk about the incident that inspired Muru, police brutality within the Maori community, and their personal encounters with the police.
Inspired by actual events, Muru is the powerful story of local Police Sergeant “Taffy” Tāwharau who recently returned home to the remote Ruatoki valley to look after his sick father.

Plot: Two World War I veterans, a doctor (Christian Bale) and a lawyer (John David Washington), are hired by the daughter of their former commanding officer to prove the man was murdered. Soon framed for murder, the two are reunited with the nurse (Margot Robbie) that was devoted to them after the war and stumble upon a Fascist plot to replace the president of the United States.
Review: A lot is going on in David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. The early reviews have been largely negative, with many criticizing the movie’s loose, sometimes shambling and uneasy mix of genres. However, if you can get over the off-putting tone, which ranges from slapstick comedy one moment to bursts of gory ultra-violence the next, you’ll find Amsterdam is an ambitious and entertaining film.

All throughout Amsterdam you can hear the gears clunking and grinding and screeching. Could it be the rust? It’s been seven years since David O. Russell made a movie—even longer since he made one that sang with the kind of drugged-out, balletic energy that satisfies his crowded, star-studded ensembles—and you can tell. Something just feels off. He’s back directing an overstuffed, incongruous, stranger-than-fiction yarn attempting to dramatize (or satirize?) one of the most bizarre plots in American history. That you can’t always tell—the movie arbitrarily pivots from serious conspiracy to buddy comedy throug every scene—only highlights the chaotic tonal friction at its core. There’s enough heat to call this a lukewarm mess.
That’s a shame, and maybe also predictable considering the number of actors Russell has at his disposal yet again. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington represent this movie’s troubled triumvirate,...

Director David O. Russell's newest movie, "Amsterdam," boasts an all-star cast, including major names like Taylor Swift, Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Robert De Niro. Rounding out the lengthy list of celebrities involved in the film is Drake, who serves as one of the executive producers. The murder mystery, set in the 1930s, will be released in theaters on Oct. 7.
It's just the latest offering from Russell, a director with five Academy Award nominations under his belt for critically acclaimed movies including "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Fighter," and "American Hustle." "Amsterdam" is his first film since 2015's "Joy." But allegations of abuse have also followed the director for years, with famous actors like George Clooney and Amy Adams accusing him of misbehavior on set, in addition to allegations of groping from Russell's own niece.

A star-studded new historical comedy that’s amusing at best, noxious at worst, and frantically self-insistent upon its own negligible entertainment value at all times as it strains to find the beauty in the mad tapestry of life? That’s right: David O. Russell is back. And while the volatile director’s recent work has been damning enough to dampen enthusiasm for this comeback on its own — even without Russell’s various personal controversies — it doesn’t exactly help matters that his first movie in seven years is

It’s his ideal state and favorite subject. “Amsterdam,” as with all of the director’s movies, is clearly the work of someone who wanted it to be this way; someone who wanted his sepia-toned noir about one of the United States’ clumsiest political conspiracies to feel like a humorless farce, a sexless “Jules and Jim” love triangle,...
