Beyoncé looked to fellow cultural titans to lasso inspiration for her new album “Cowboy Carter.”
The Grammy winner and “Dreamgirls” actress, who recently appeared in theaters with her “Renaissance” concert film, shared that she watched features such as Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” to craft her own “character” behind her debut country album.
“This album took over five years,” Beyoncé said in an official press release. “It’s been really great to have the time and the grace to be able to take my time with it. I was initially going to put ‘Cowboy Carter’ out first [before ‘Renaissance’], but with the pandemic, there was too much heaviness in the world. We wanted to dance. We deserved to dance. But I had to trust God’s timing.”
That timing also encompassed the release of additional features that influenced Beyoncé’s vision for the album,...

If you’d have to guess, you would not probably get closer to the movie that terrified George Clooney. Of course, in our heads, Batman & Robin would pop up to be the scariest movie in his career but it was far from it.
George Clooney as Batman
Certainly, Clooney would hate to talk about his disastrous 1997 DC movie playing Batman against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s supervillain Mr. Freeze. However, the decorated Hollywood actor has opened up about the movie that sent shivers down his spine.
George Clooney Was Terrified Of One Coen Brothers Movie George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou?
George Clooney and the Coen Brothers have been long-time collaborators as the actor went on to appear in five movies from the directors duo. As their go-to guy, Clooney appeared in Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading, Hail, Caesar!, and Suburbicon but his appearance in the 2000 movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?...

“Dune: Part Two” features one of the starriest casts in recent memory. From Timothée Chalamet to Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista and more, there’s rarely a scene in the Denis Villeneuve-directed sequel that isn’t filled with star power. The cast was supposed to be even bigger, however, but the filmmaker had to make some cuts to the final edit that left at least one actor “heartbroken.”
Tim Blake Nelson, a regular of the Coen Brothers thanks to films such as “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” was announced as a cast member for “Dune: Part Two” in January 2023. He does not appear in the theatrical release.
“I don’t think I’m at liberty to say what the scene was,” Nelson recently told Movieweb about being cut out of the sequel. “I’d leave that to...

One of our great character actors, John Turturro, is equally adept at at drama, comedy and tough-guy roles. A New York stage veteran, he made his way to Hollywood following a character actor’s path, but thanks to several influential mentors, his career soared as he appeared in film after film that would prove to become classics.
Although he continues to have a successful career in television — he is an Emmy winner from two nominations and has earned a Golden Globe nod and three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his TV work — I suspect that it will be for his work in film for which he will be most remembered, from small indelible roles in “Do the Right Thing” and “The Big Lebowski” to great leading parts, such as in the Coens’ “Barton Fink” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
So let’s raise a glass to Turturro by...

The release of "Drive-Away Dolls" has been marked by most of the trades as the first solo directorial feature of Ethan Coen, following his brother Joel's 2021 outing with "The Tragedy of Macbeth." And sure, it's a catchy headline to acknowledge that one-half of one of cinema's greatest directorial partnerships is stepping out on his own, but that doesn't tell the full story. For one thing, Ethan Coen already made his solo directorial debut with the documentary "Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind." More importantly, "Drive-Away Dolls" may have Coen listed as the solo director, but if you ask him, this was yet another co-directed project, but this time with his wife and longtime Coen Bros. editor, Tricia Cooke.
Cooke first worked with the Coens as an editor on "Miller's Crossing" fresh out of film school, seeking out the job not because they were the esteemed directors of "Blood Simple" and Raising Arizona" fame,...

Director Ethan Coen – collaborating with wife Tricia Cooke instead of brother Joel – delivers a disposable but not entirely unentertaining lesbian-centered crime caper comedy in Drive-Away Dolls. With its raunchy sex and vivid violence, the film is more an affectionate tribute to hard R drive-in B movies that more resembles something from the mind of Russ Meyer than anything resembling smart, Oscar-y movies like the Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men, Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Fargo, Blood Simple etc.
Drive-Away Dolls definitely retains the quirkiness of the Coen brand, but key inspirations this time were Meyers’ Motorpsycho, Bad Girls Go To Hell and even something really good like ’50s noir Kiss Me Deadly, with which it shares some plot details.
But “plot” doesn’t really matter much here. Coen and Cooke throw everything against the wall to see what sticks. If it makes narrative sense, it likely is an accident.

Did you know that Victoria Monet‘s two-year-old daughter Hazel is the youngest-ever Grammy nominee?!
The 34-year-old singer and her adorable daughter celebrated together on the morning of the 2024 Grammy Awards by jumping up and down in their hotel bed and we have the photos.
Victoria and Hazel snacked on Jimmy John’s new red velvet cookies while wearing matching bathrobes.
One of the seven Grammy nominations that Victoria holds today is for Best Traditional R&b Performance for her song “Hollywood,” which features her daughter’s voice. The Peasall Sisters’ Leah Peasall was previously the youngest Grammy nominee after being nominated for her work on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack at age 8.
Victoria is considered the frontrunner for the Best New Artist award at tonight’s show. She recently opened up about the frustrating part of her connection to Ariana Grande.

Apparently screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach didn’t do quite Ken-ough to get “Barbie” considered as an original work for this year’s Oscars, as the candy-colored saga will hereforth only be considered by voters in Adapted Screenplay category, in a decision confirmed Wednesday by the Academy.
The determination was made by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and when Oscar nomination voting begins on Jan. 11, voters will only be permitted to consider “Barbie” in the set category.
The film will join a fairly crowded field of strong contenders of adapted works, including “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” and “All of Us Strangers” just for starters. It is assumed that Warner Bros., the studio behind “Barbie,” assumed the Original Screenplay would be less competitive and the property is based more on IP than a previously-produced work.

For almost 40 years, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen – better known as the Coen Brothers – have created a number of quirky, singular titles spanning a variety of genres. They’ve also become industry and academy favorites, picking up four Oscar wins for writing, directing and producing. Celebrate this dynamic duo by taking a look back at all 18 of their films, ranked worst to best.
The Coens made their feature debut with the Southwestern neo-noir “Blood Simple” (1984). Shot on a shoestring budget with a then largely unknown cast, the film established the brothers’ talent for visually striking, wholly original stories.
They followed their breakout hit with a series of increasingly ambitious, wildly different features: the wacky Southern farce “Raising Arizona” (1987), the moody gangster saga “Millers Crossing” (1990), the bizarre Hollywood satire “Barton Fink” (1991), and the nostalgic screwball comedy “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994).

Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.
“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.
SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.
Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

Focus Features and Working Title have released the first trailer for Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s comedy caper “Drive-Away Dolls.” The comedy is set to open in theaters on Sept. 22.
The film follows Jamie, played by Margaret Qualley, who is an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.
Speaking with Variety, Coen described the film as “filthy fun” and a “chase intrigue movie. In one word, it’s a comedy.”
Cooke adds the film is a queer film with Jamie and Marian’s relationship dynamic also featured as part of the narrative. She says, “I’m queer, and I’ve always identified as queer.

These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Last month, Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve‘s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune (which is set to reach theatres on November 3, 2023), wrapped production after five months of filming in locations including Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy… but it has only just now been revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Tim Blake Nelson is in the cast. And not even The Hollywood Reporter was able to unearth information on the character Nelson is playing in the film.
Scripted by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts, Dune: Part One (watch or buy it Here) stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, “a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding” who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As the calendar flips over to 2023, Prime Video is attempting to start a new year on the right track with fresh seasons of some major originals.
Prime Videos’ list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by Hunters season 2 on Jan. 13. The first season of Hunters was set in 1977 and followed young Jonah Heidelbaum’s (Logan Lerman) introduction to a world of Nazi-hunting. After a lengthy wait for season 2, the fresh (and final) batch of episodes will find Jonah and friends venturing to South American to take out none other than Adolf Hitler, himself.
While Nazi-hunting undoubtedly takes up a lot of streaming space, two other Amazon original series of note arrive in January. The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a Scottish oil rig, premieres Jan. 6. That will be followed by season 2 of fantasy role-playing animated series The Legend of Vox Machina on Jan. 20.

The Movie: "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs"
Where You Can Stream It: Netflix
The Pitch: In addition to being the final Coen Brothers film, "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is the most charming anthology Western about death you're ever likely to see. It's not only about death, but the specter of human mortality looms over all six segments of this film, which unfolds like a collection of short stories, complete with an actual book and the turning of pages onscreen.
In each story, a character meets their match in some way, whether it be through a musically inclined gunslinger or a math-inclined chicken. The sum total is a masterful, Oscar-nominated anthology where each tale holds its own pleasures yet also...

Joel and Ethan Coen are some of the most consistent filmmakers around. Nearly every film they put out seems to be just as intelligent and well-written as the others, with tons of memorable characters. In 2000, coming off the great success of hits like "Fargo" and "Raising Arizona," the Coen brothers were hot as they'd ever been. It's no wonder that, for their next project, "O Brother Where Art Thou?," they were able to get huge star George Clooney on board without him giving it a second thought, which Clooney spoke about in a 2000 interview.
"They brought the script and set it down and said 'We wrote this, do you wanna do it?' and I said 'Yeah.' And they go, 'Do you wanna read it?' and I go, 'Well, alright, but I'll do it.'"
The fact that such a popular actor was immediately willing to work with them,...

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

The 2002 Grammys were an interesting edition. The “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack won Album of the Year, U2 won Record of the Year for the second straight year, and India.Arie infamously went zero-for-seven. However, the biggest story was the rise of Alicia Keys, who took home the most awards of the night with five. It was the moment she truly became a star. After that impressive sweep she became a Grammy favorite, even getting a nomination for Song of the Year in 2022 for “A Beautiful Noise,” 20 years after her awards debut.
Alicia Keys’s debut album, “Songs in A Minor,” was a success from the get go. The album’s lead single, “Fallin’,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for multiple weeks. That was followed by the top-10 hit “A Woman’s Worth,” which officially made her more than a one-hit wonder. The album itself debuted at number-one on the...

Scary beautiful monsters are coming, legendary director Guillermo del Toro promises of his new series “Cabinet of Curiosities,” in a brand new first look along with the unique release details for the anthology.
In the video, which Netflix dropped Monday, del Toro explains how each of the individual episodes were crafted, and the creative freedom he and co-showrunner J. Miles Dale gave the directors of each installment.
The series is a curated collection of “genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro,” per a logline from the streamer.
“With ‘Cabinet of Curiosities,’ we set out to showcase the realities existing outside of our normal world: the anomalies and curiosities.

You can’t win ’em all. Or in some cases, you can’t win any of ’em. There are 18 music artists who hold the unfortunate distinction of receiving six or more nominations in one year from the Grammys … and then not winning any of them. Scroll down to see the complete list along with every award they didn’t take home that night.
The thing about a historic Grammy shutout is that Recording Academy voters have to love you enough to nominate you that many times, and it’s often just bad luck that blocks you from the winner’s circle. Consider India.Arie. She was a seven-time nominee in 2002 including a sweep of all four general field categories — just over a dozen artists have ever done that. Unfortunately, most of those nominations were against higher-profile R&b breakout Alicia Keys, who beat Arie five times while U2 (“Walk On...

‘Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind’ Review: Ethan Coen’s Slim Doc Is at the Mercy of Its Wild Subject
Those looking to play Coen Kremlinologist now that the brothers are following individual muses might find themselves at a loss with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind.” To understand filmmaker Ethan Coen’s unique perspective, better pick up one of his plays or books of poetry, or simply wait for the lesbian road comedy he’s slated to direct later this year. When it comes to this musical documentary that marks Coen’s first solo directorial outing, the voice that rings loudest belongs to the man in the title.
Less a biography of a music pioneer than a chance to hang by his side, Coen’s concise 72-minute film builds on nothing but archival footage, mixing and matching decades of interviews with hours of recorded performances. Eventually, Coen and his film settle around the thesis that Jerry Lee — who’s still kicking at age 86 and was inducted into the Country...

As you’ve probably noticed, sometimes awards show winners make no sense. Yet, sometimes they make so much sense in hindsight you start to wonder if you’re perhaps over-analyzing everything. Such was the case for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 13, 2011. In a ceremony that included an almost clean sweep by country band Lady A; big wins for Lady Gaga, John Legend, and Jay-Z; and some serious snubs for then up-and-coming artists Drake and Justin Bieber, the biggest moment of the night came when a understandably confused Barbra Streisand declared Arcade Fire’s acclaimed rock masterpiece “The Suburbs” as the Album of the Year. How did this happen, and most importantly, what can we learn from it more than 10 years later?
Let’s start by taking a look at the nominees that year. Arcade Fire was first on the list with their critically beloved third studio album,...

Joel & Ethan Coen's 2000 film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" draws inspiration from many sources, the foremost of which is probably "The Three Stooges." In the film, George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Turturro play a trio of escaped chain gang convicts in late 1930s Mississippi. Ulysses Everett McGill (Clooney), is the forward-thinking intelligent character with impeccable hair (he's Larry), with Turturro playing the tough, strong-willed one (he's Moe), and Nelson playing the blissfully unaware one (he's Curly).

Take a look @ 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in director Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings":
Michael Stevens/SneakPeek.Ca For 'The Good'
"Most of us know how the story goes with director Ridley Scott delivering action adventure along the lines of 'Gladiator', with epic 3D sequences involving horses, chariots and thousands of ancient warriors.
"The recreation of Egypt through the efforts of hundreds of digital artists is visually impressive throughout the entire film, depicting David Lean-like arid deserts, the city of 'Memphis', plus a series of horrific plagues, tidal waves and cosmic weather anomalies.
"Criticism leveled at the film for using 'white' actors in main roles is unfounded, as actor Christian Bale delivers the goods in his depiction of 'Moses' aka 'Moishe', evolving from a self-assured 'royal' fighting machine, to a humble, man of God.
"Likewise Joel Edgerton is creatively cast as blue-eyed reptilian ruler 'Ramses',...

For an actor who came to fame tackling roles that call upon him to exude worldliness and charm, George Clooney sure is good at playing the clown for the Coen brothers. There's just something gratifying about watching the "Ocean's Eleven" and "Michael Clayton" star make an ass of himself in the duo's "Numbskull Trilogy" — whether he's fretting about his hair gel in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (he's a Dapper Dan man!) or being readily persuaded to team up with a group of blacklisted Communist screenwriters who've only just kidnapped him in "Hail, Caesar!"

Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.

Together, the Coen Brothers have covered a lot of ground as collaborators and co-directors, from stark neo noir (“Blood Simple”) to bluegrass-tinged whimsy to mid-century Hollywood shenanigans. But an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” could only have happened once the pair put their partnership on hiatus, according to Joel Coen in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Coen’s interest in “Macbeth” was first piqued when his wife, Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand, asked him to consider directing her in the play as Lady Macbeth. He ended up not helming that production at Berkeley Rep, which starred McDormand and “Games of Thrones” alum Conleth Hill in 2016. But the seed had been planted for Coen, who began contemplating the story of a murderous couple in cinematic terms.
That plan became clearer after 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” the last film on which the Coens shared a directing credit.

Starting with their feature film debut in 1984, Joel and Ethan Coen have been power players in the world of American indie cinema. Throughout the late '80s and the whole of the '90s, the filmmakers put out a ling string of critically revered and Award-winning films. Their 1996 film "Fargo" still tops lists of the best films of its decade, "Barton Fink" has been called one of the best films ever made about screenwriting, and both 1986's "Raising Arizona" and 1998's "The Big Lebowski" are still on regular rotation at midnight movie houses. 2000's "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," a 1930s retelling of "The Odyssey," boasts one...

Robert Plant is highly amused by Paul McCartney’s dubbing the Rolling Stones “a blues cover band,” perhaps in part because his own old band faced similar criticism. “I don’t think there’s any fighting,” he says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now. “They’ve known each other since 1963. They love each other desperately.” Still, if there’s any animus, he knows how to resolve it: McCartney, he says, “should just play bass with the Stones.”

NBCUniversal’s international flight plan for Peacock starts this week: Starting Nov. 16, Sky TV and Now customers in the U.K. and Ireland will get access to the streaming service for no additional fee.
Comcast had announced plans this summer to launch Peacock as a free add-on for Sky’s satellite TV customers in Europe, representing a base of close to 20 million households. According to NBCU, after the “soft launch” in the U.K. and Ireland, Peacock will continue to roll out across Sky platforms in territories including Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland in the next few months.
Sky TV customers and subscribers to the Now Entertainment package in the U.K. and Ireland will get “early access” to the new ad-supported Peacock destination, with original and library TV shows and movies from across NBCU although the content availability will differ from what’s available on Peacock in the U.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?: Benguigui Explores Fractured Cultural Identities in Meta Drama
It’s been two decades since French-Algerian filmmaker Yamina Benguigui released her exceptional 2001 narrative debut Inch’Allah Dimanche, which explored the hardships of an Algerian woman forced to immigrate to France with her family. Largely autobiographical in scope, Benguigui returns to similar themes with a more complex narrative in her sophomore theatrical feature, Sisters, headlined by an impressive cast led by Isabelle Adjani.
Metatextual and self-reflexive as it hinges on one immigrant family’s traumas and their navigation of fractured cultural identity, Benguigui straddles hybrids in a film examining catharsis through creative expression.…...

Occasionally a critic will write something that gets readers seriously riled. God knows I’ve done it. If I had to list my three greatest hits of outrage, they would probably be my pans of “Pretty Woman,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Let the Right One In.” It’s no accident that the last of those is a horror film. Over the years, I’ve ticked off more horror fans than I can count, and it’s all because of something that we totally share: a passion for the genre that’s nothing short of consuming. A great horror movie hits you on every level — heart, mind, eye, squirm-in-your-seat body shudder. Maybe that’s why when we disagree about them, it can feel like war.

Tim Blake Nelson is a highly skilled and versatile actor (not to mention a terrific director), but for years now there has been one character he owns: the yokel, the snaggletoothed redneck runt, the leering hillbilly bumpkin who never met a big vocabulary word he didn’t like to chew on like tobacco. He has done variations on this role in films from “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” to “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and the thing about it is that each time Nelson goes Full Hick, you don’t feel like he’s acting; you feel like he just is. In truth, he’s acting up a storm, never more so than in “Old Henry,” in which he gives what I can only call the “Citizen Kane” of Tim Blake Nelson hayseed varmint performances.
Here’s what elevates this one. Most of the backwoods turns on Nelson’s resume have been unabashedly comic.
