It’s “Barbie” meets the Dark Universe.
Mattel, the toy company/studio behind last year’s mega-blockbuster “Barbie,” has teamed up with Universal Pictures and prolific screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman and his company Weed Road to develop “Monster High,” a live-action theatrical film based on a popular line of dolls.
Launched in 2010, the Monster High line consists of fashion dolls inspired by horror movies, monsters from folklore, and other bits of spooky pop culture, which have in turn inspired an animated web series, an animated TV series, video games, book series, and a live-action made-for-tv musical. Monster High is aimed at girls 7-14 who want something different from Barbie.
The cinematic world of “Monster High” is built around a high school in the town of New Salem attended by the children of famous monsters. The characters include Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride; Dracula’s daughter Draculaura; and Clawdeen Wolf,...

Universal is enrolling in Mattel’s Monster High, with the studio and the toy brand teaming up on a feature that will be produced by Akiva Goldsman.
The Monster High toy line debuted in 2010 and centered on the teenage children of monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman as they grow up and deal with the trials and tribulations of high school. This is the latest in a flurry of deals between Mattel and Hollywood studios as it continues to exploit its IP following the $1.446 billion success of last year’s Barbie.
“Monster High helps fans discover the great beauty in being true to yourself and celebrates the unique sensibilities at the core of who we are as individuals. We’re proud to partner with Universal Pictures and the brilliant Akiva Goldsman to usher this important message to audiences worldwide,” said Mattell Films boss Robbie Brenner.

Hey, it worked for Barbie.
Mattel’s next feature film based on a doll will be a live-action, theatrical Monster High movie written and produced by Akiva Goldsman and distributed by Universal Pictures. The gist of the Monster High fashion-doll line is that they are the children of iconic monsters, like Frankie Stein (the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride), Draculaura (the daughter of Dracula), and Clawdeen Wolf (the daughter of a werewolf mom and a human dad).
Goldsman’s banner Weed Road will produce the film. Goldsman, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of “A Beautiful Mind,” is also a producer on Mattel Films’ upcoming Major Matt Mason movie starring Tom Hanks. The announcement of that toy adaptation, which is set up at Paramount Pictures, preceded “Barbie.”
Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur De Koos will oversee the Monster High movie for Mattel; Greg Lessans has oversight for Weed Road.

Oscar-winning writer-producer Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road are partnering with Mattel, Inc. and Universal Pictures to develop a live-action theatrical Monsters High film, based on the multimedia franchise of the same name.
We’re told that Goldsman is only producing, not writing, so the assignment remains open for now.
First introduced via a line of dolls in 2010, Monster High centers around a fictional high school attended by the teenage children of famous monsters. These characters, such as Draculaura (daughter of Dracula), Frankie Stein (daughter of Frankenstein’s monster), Clawdeen Wolf (daughter of the Werewolf) and Cleo de Nile (daughter of the Mummy), are designed to reflect the diverse and unique offspring of classic monster figures. Each brings their own personality, style, and background to the Monster High universe, creating a rich tapestry of monster heritage and high school drama.

“At first, I thought they were a rock and roll band because they all kind of came in with bandanas and long hair and beards and stuff like that,” reveals Ron Howard about his first encounter with Jim Henson and his team behind the Muppets. For our recent webchat he says that it was his one-and-only 1970s encounter with Henson, adding “I did cross paths with him one time backstage at this crazy prime-time live variety show that ABC was trying to hatch as a regular series. They didn’t wind up continuing with it, but were both guests on an it, and for a brief moment, we kind of intersected.”
Howard is the director and producer behind the new Disney+ documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” about the legendary founder of the Muppets. Henson’s children gave Howard and his documentary team full access to the family and company archives.

“As a huge Trekkie myself, I am always tempted to use the theme, to install all these little Easter eggs,” reveals “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” composer Nami Melumad. about the most exciting parts of the show’s score; the orchestral melodies that duck and dive between robust action drama and beloved old-school flourishes like the instantly recognizable original series theme. For our recent webchat she adds, “I think for all composers who work on ‘Trek’ you have to be very aware of when you’re choosing to use the ‘Star Trek’ theme. You want to bring it when it’s earned, otherwise, if you just continue to use it all the time, it loses its effectiveness. Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., and Keanu Reeves are three of the most prominent stars in Hollywood. Pitt was at the beginning of his career giving fans acclaimed movies like Thelma & Louise in 1991 but the actor lost a movie role he wanted in the same year and it also happened to Downey Jr. and Reeves.

While these are more space fantasy than true sci-fi, the genre's core purpose is to offer commentary on our present and possible future. Films like Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, and Ridley Scott's The Martian are exemplary in their scientific fidelity. However, one film stands out for its unparalleled accuracy: Ron Howard's Apollo 13.
The Story of the Failed, Yet Heroic Flight to the Moon
"Apollo 13" is not your typical sci-fi movie but rather a science space drama with fictional elements, dramatizing the perilous events of the April 1970 space mission. Directed by Ron Howard, known for films like Willow, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code, and written by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert, the movie meticulously recreates the dangerous mission.

It’s fitting that Ron Howard’s documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” gets its name from the man himself. During an early bit of voiceover, we hear the “Sesame Street” and “Muppets” creator describe his take on just what it is he does: Idea man. Nothing more, nothing less.
As the film winds on, others are more lofty in their estimations. Henson was a “man with a purpose,” a superhuman, someone for whom terms like “incredibly productive” can’t do justice. He “wanted to do more than was humanly possible,” one of Henson’s adult children tells us. Howard’s film reminds us how true that was during Henson’s lifetime and into his continuing legacy.
Henson was a puppeteer and creator of everything from The Muppets to “Fraggle Rock,” an animator and actor, a TV genius (Henson’s fingerprints are still on every element of “Sesame Street”), and a filmmaker.

Roger Corman, who died Saturday at 98, was famously involved with many of the greats of filmmaking at the start of their careers. In the case of Ron Howard, he helped the young actor transition from being a child star into a versatile director, giving him his first directing job with the action comedy “Grand Theft Auto” in 1977.
Howard noted that Corman was also known for giving women more opportunities than they typically had in the film industry at that time, including Penelope Spheeris and Gale Ann Hurd.
Howard paid tribute to Corman Sunday morning in a heartfelt message, writing, “Roger not only mentored a couple of generations of high profile filmmakers, but he also opened doors to many on the production side who were struggling to find career paths in the industry. Growing up on set put Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Connelly on the fast track to Hollywood fame. But despite her success, one of her lasting regrets was not finishing college – and, she says, it’s still on her to-do list…
Jennifer Connelly is on a Zoom call from her home in Brooklyn, jetlagged after attending Louis Vuitton’s pre-fall 2024 show in Shanghai, which does not bode well: she is known to have been reticent in past interviews, and sometimes while working. When she made A Beautiful Mind, the 2001 movie for which she won an Oscar for playing the wife of schizophrenic mathematician John Nash, the co-producer Brian Grazer was unnerved by her reserve. “It was hard for me to get to know her on the set because I’m so emotional,” he told a writer in 2001. “She’s very serious. She’s not silly. She doesn’t have that buoyancy.”

“You’ve been making women feel bad about themselves since you were invented,” the hip teen Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) tells the stereotypical Barbie standing before her. “You represent everything wrong with our culture: sexualized capitalism, unrealistic physical ideals.” Stereotypical Barbie is horrified: “No, no, no, you’re describing something stereotypical,” she insists.
Margot Robbie spent much of Barbie proving why the doll she portrayed wasn’t the sexist object that girls like Sasha see. The Aussie actor has a much more difficult task ahead of her if she’s going to do the same thing in her upcoming project Avengelyne. Everything about Avengelyne screams mindless sex and violence—which is why Robbie is the perfect choice. Hold on, let us explain…

I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...

It’s the next step in the separation of the Starz cable channel/streaming service from the Lionsgate production house.
The effort by Lionsgate to spin off its TV and movie production studio from the cable channel/streaming service Starz has taken its next step. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to spin off its TV and movie studios in a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (Spac), allowing it to continue the process of disentangling itself from Starz and potentially attract new buyers.
The Lionsgate TV and movie studios will merge with Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp., with the deal likely to close in May. Lionsgate intends to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. The change could mean the end of the Starz streaming platform, which may see the rights to its TV and movie library depart with Lionsgate. Save 70% $9.99+ / month starz.

Ron Howard is both a creative and personality match for my father, unlike anyone else we could have contemplated,” stated Lisa Henson in an email to Vanity Fair.
“It was sort of anarchy on the outside, but underneath it, there was always a smart idea—a witty point to make, an observation about the world,” said Howard while discussing his impression of Jim Henson’s life with Vanity Fair. “To see that evolve through the medium of puppetry and television, and then on into movies, was so interesting to me. Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe seemingly starred in every other film in the early 2000s. He has become more selective in recent years, so that when he does appear onscreen in a film, it feels like more of an event. Most recently, he strikingly transformed into disgraced former Fox News head Roger Ailes in the Showtime limited series “The Loudest Voice,” for which he won a Golden Globe and earned a SAG nomination.
Crowe is one of only a handful of actors to have been Oscar-nominated for a leading role in three consecutive years — 1999’s “The Insider,” 2000’s “Gladiator” (win) and 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” all of which were also nominated for Best Picture (with “Gladiator” and “A Beautiful Mind” winning). It’s a rare type of cinephile who wasn’t introduced to the idea of film as more than just idle entertainment by the ritual of the Academy Awards. And it’s an even rarer type of cinephile who didn’t soon thereafter vehemently reject the Oscar as the ultimate barometer of a film’s artistic worth. Those of us who started off with The Godfather, Schindler’s List, All About Eve, or Casablanca all eventually got around to Out of Africa, Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Show on Earth, Cimarron, and Cavalcade. First loves being first loves, we still find ourselves regressing if for only one night a year, succumbing to the allure of instant canonization even as it comes in the form of repeated slap-in-the-face reminders of Oscar’s bracing wrongness: Gladiator, Braveheart, Chicago, Crash. In that sense, consider this project part cathartic exorcism and part...

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

An awards season unlike any other — during which the first simultaneous strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood history largely prevented campaigning by talent for months — came to an end Sunday night at the 96th Academy Awards.
As was widely expected, Oppenheimer dominated, winning seven Oscars — no film has won more since Slumdog Millionaire snagged eight, 15 years ago — including for best picture (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven), director (Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy, the category’s first Irish winner), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), film editing (Jennifer Lame) and original score (Lugwig Göransson).
That’s quite an achievement for not just the filmmakers, who adapted a book (Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer) that many thought was unadaptable into a riveting instant classic of a film, but also for the teams that sold it...

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:

This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher of all of the main categories, becoming a make-or-break race for the fourth straight year.
It all began when Lily Gladstone surprised pundits with her move up to the lead category for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” then was halted by Emma Stone for “Poor Things” at the Critics Choice Awards (after both won Golden Globes in their respective categories). Stone continued to succeed at the BAFTA Awards after Gladstone was shockingly snubbed. And it seemed that she was on a roll to victory to her second Oscar, only to be stopped in her tracks at the SAG Awards by, you guessed it, Gladstone. This push and pull between the two actresses has created back-and-forth mania over who will ultimately win out, and even though Gladstone has overtaken the lead currently in the combined Gold Derby odds at...

Lionsgate currently has distribution deals in place with The Roku Channel and Peacock, but will they survive the studio’s split from one company into two?
The long-promised split of the Lionsgate movie studio from the Starz cable/streaming bundle is getting underway in April. A new report from Deadline indicates that the studio will merge with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac) in April, and will begin trading on the Nasdaq under a different symbol than Starz.
The plan is for Lionsgate to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. Once the split is complete, Starz and its properties like “Outlander” and the “Power” franchise would be available for acquisition.
Normally this is the part where we take you on a brief temperature check on—if not philosophical flight of fancy over—the state of the movie industry and how that will factor into what’s occupying most of the real estate in Oscar voters’ heads. We usually delve into why in fact the whole annual spectacle serves just about anything but the purported task of rewarding the previous year’s best cinematic work. How does Parasite represent the best-case scenario for a more international AMPAS? Does Tár surgically unpack our anxieties about representation, or does it just exploit them? Why Green Book, why now? But seeing how Mark Harris, in this weekend’s New York Times, pretty thoroughly wrapped up that legwork this go-around, and recognizing that there’s only so many angles we can take to argue the functional utility that Oppenheimer has market-cornered in this year’s race,...

The writers behind the feature American Fiction and the TV adaptation Slow Horses took home the top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which honors the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors as well as the screenwriters share the award.
In the film category, American Fiction (Cord Jefferson’s adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure) topped fellow nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI); Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer); Origin (Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents); and Poor Things (Tony McNamara’s adaptation of Aliasdair Gray’s novel of the same name).

France’s Canal+ Group said that it has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian streaming platform Viu to 30%.
“This additional investment underlines the confidence that Canal+ has in Viu and its teams. It also highlights the determination of Canal+ to make Asia its next growth vector, through its strategic partnership with Pccw, and through an acceleration of growth at Viu, a premium streaming service present in Asia, the Middle East and South Asfrica,” the French group said in a statement. Additionally, it said that its investment in Viu now amounted to some $300 million and that it retains an option to increase its stake to 50%.
In June last year, Canal+ announced that it was to pay $200 million for an initial 26.1% stake in Viu and that it would make a total staggered investment of $300 million.
In results published on Friday, Pccw said: “Viu saw 27% growth in revenue in2023 […] propelled...

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...
