In a sense, art imitates life, at least briefly in Outer Banks Season 3. Like the real-life relationship between Stokes and Cline, Sarah and John B. end things in the third season of the Netflix series. Caught up in what becomes Big John’s (Charles Halford) hunt for the treasure buried in El Dorado, John B. needs help finding balance.

Director Jesse Peretz is no stranger to the Sundance Film Festival. He wrote and directed the indie darling “Our Idiot Brother,” which premiered at Sundance in 2011. His other feature-length films include “The Château” and “First Love, Last Rites.” The filmmaker has also directed several television shows, including “Girls,” “Glow,” “Divorce,” Nurse Jackie,” and “Orange is the New Black.” Peretz returned to Sundance this year with “Juliet, Naked,” a film based on two-time Oscar nominee Nick Hornby‘s eponymous novel.

At family gatherings everyone notices they have that one strange family member. Whether it’s the creepy uncle, the over-talkative father or Our Idiot Brother. In his newest film, Paul Rudd is that idiot brother. Rudd plays Ned, a hippy who runs a farmer’s market with his dog Willie Nelson. One day he sells marijuana to a cop and is sent to jail. Upon his release, he goes home where he is kicked out by his girlfriend (now ex), Janet (Kathryn Hahn). He also has to leave behind Willie Nelson, who he loves very much and Janet can’t stand. It’s her way of getting back at Ned.
Having nowhere to go, he moves back to his Long Island home with his mother, Ilene (longtime actress Shirley Knight). He doesn’t like it there, so he moves in with one of his 3 sisters, Liz (Emily Mortimer, City Island) her husband,...

Like a great shining beacon of hope in the Mean-Spirited Comedy Summer of 2011, Our Idiot Brother boasts a heartfelt message delivered through Paul Rudd’s unfiltered, socially retarded but almost preternaturally good-hearted Ned. Director Jesse Peretz (who also directed Rudd in The Ex and 2001’s little-seen The Château), working from a screenplay by Evgenia Peretz and her husband David Schisgall, delivers a breezily paced comedy enlivened by a top-notch “indie” cast. With only a clichéd third act to run down the film’s merits, Brother deserves much praise for taking the road not traveled and avoiding glorifying an ego-driven, potty-mouthed protagonist.
Ned is, for all involved, something of an idiot savant who’s neither idiotic nor particularly learned, rather just out of touch with the fast-paced lives of his three very different sisters. When Ned’s moral code lands him in jail after selling pot to a uniformed officer,...

It’s an ugly day outside, so let’s look ahead to some future rainy day distractions, shall we? Today we’ve got the first posters for: To Be Heard, the beat poetry documentary that’s gaining momentum on the film festival circuit, the inevitable sequel Despicable Me 2, and the Sundance hit comedy Our Idiot Brother.
First up is To Be Heard, a passion project created by Amy Sultan, Roland Legiardi-Laura, Edwin Martinez, and Deborah Shaffer. Shot over a four year period, this documentary follows the trials and travails of three teenagers trying to survive their soul-crushing surroundings through the power of spoken word.

Even though the film received respectful, rather than rave, reviews on its Sundance bow (our own review was one of the more positive), you can't cast Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, T.J. Miller, Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn in a comedy together without leaving us begging to see the finished film, and that's why we've been firmly looking forward to "Our Idiot Brother" all year long. The film, which marks Rudd's reunion with Jesse Peretz, his director on "The Château," follows the actor as a Candide-like innocent who wreaks havoc on…...

On August 26, we'll get to see one of the most oxymoronic creatures in the film world: the big indie. "Our Idiot Brother" stars a cast worthy of any major Hollywood production: Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Rashida Jones, Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott, and Paul Rudd as the titular hero, a genial boob who gets sent to jail for selling pot to a uniformed police officer. Or so I gather from the film's first trailer:
The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it received high marks for just about everything but its indie-ness. Back in January (when it was still going by its original title, "My Idiot Brother"), Alison Willmore said:
"With its stars and sleek production values, 'My Idiot Brother' could be an Apatow comedy (it was directed by Jesse Peretz, of 2001's 'The Château'), right down to the rueful...

The cast of "My Idiot Brother" is so overstuffed with talent it almost seems unfair, like the film should be subject to some kind of comedy handicap. Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel play a trio of sisters leading lives of various complications in New York City. Steve Coogan, Adam Scott and Rashida Jones appear as their various love interests, Shirley Knight, Kathryn Hahn and others turn up in smaller roles. And, of course, there's Paul Rudd as the title character, more commonly known as Ned, a farmer of organic produce and pot who in a mixture of stupidity and naive generosity gifts some of his contraband to a uniformed officer who claims to be in need because he's having a tough week, and who then busts him.
Even when he's doing smarmy, there's never a doubt that the majority of the characters Rudd plays are fundamentally nice guys with squishy centers.

With things quieting down for the holidays and the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks from kicking off, I thought I'd feature some first look photos from a comedy playing at Sundance 2011. The film is called My Idiot Brother and is directed by musician / music video director Jesse Peretz, of The Château and The Ex previously who has been honing his skills directing episodes of "Important Things with Demetri Martin." The cast most importantly stars Paul Rudd, seen in the photos with bushy beard and all, as "an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters." We've got two photos from the film to check out (from Sundance). All we've got are these two shots for now, but follow the film on Twitter or visit their Facebook for updates. The rest of the cast, not seen in any photos yet (though I'm pretty damn sure that is Emily...

#32. My Idiot Brother - Jesse Peretz What should be a top acquisitions title for the festival, My Idiot Brother would mark the return of director Jesse Peretz who was at the festival with The Château a decade back. What will be a lengthy Eccles world premiere introduction, this stars a huge ensemble cast of Park City regulars in Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones, T.J. Miller, Emily Mortimer, Hugh Dancy, Adam Scott, Steve Coogan and Kathryn Hahn. Expect this to be selected for the Premieres section and be quickly picked up by a distributor within hours of premiering. Scripted by Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall, Banks, Deschanel and Mortimer star as three sisters whose lives are disrupted by their well-meaning brother (Rudd). Banks portrays Miranda, the career-driven single sister who is about to get her big break in journalism after spending years writing about accessories at a fashion magazine.

What's cool about Pitchfork's best 50 videos countdown from the 90's are seeing how some of the least obvious names cut their teeth on music videos -- some became full fledged members of the filmmaking community, while some are still in the cross over stages. What is most odd about the list is how Chris Cunningham, who along with Spike Jonze (see Weezer video below) and Michel Gondry dominated the music video scene, never made the jump into feature film. While you've got Jonathan Glazer, Mike Mills and Mark Romanek with more than one mention, and together, Jonze and Gondry are mentioned a dozen times, I've decided to point out those who have made a feature film among the 50 list. Check them out after the jump - Yo La Tengo: "Sugarcube" Phil Morrison blasted onto the scene with indie gem Junebug, but hasn't made anything since. Blur: "Coffee + TV" Garth Jennings...

Crossroads Films has attached Sam Rockwell and Amanda Peet to the David Gordon Green-penned Snow Angels. Meanwhile, Emily Mortimer has an offer for a role. Love is still in the cards for offbeat folk singer/massage therapist Phoebe Buffay from NBC's powerhouse comedy Friends. Paul Rudd, who appeared in nine episodes of the Warner Bros. TV series this season, playing Phoebe's (Lisa Kudrow) boyfriend Mike, has signed on to return for the last two episodes this season and to recur on the show's 18-episode final season in the fall. The deal for Rudd, whose character is currently on a break from Phoebe, is to co-star in five episodes next season with an option for another five. Rudd's credits include the features The Object of My Affection, in which he starred opposite Friends star Jennifer Aniston, The Cider House Rules, The Chateau and A&E's 2001 remake of The Great Gatsby.
