Ewan McGregor was “very reluctant” to play Obi Wan-Kenobi in “Star Wars,” he admitted.
“It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was. I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. ‘The Beach’ was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice.”
“I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”
He enjoyed making ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,” though.
“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney.”

Wherever Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor goes, a certain bearded Jedi follows. In 2019, when McGregor and his travel writer friend Charley Boorman arrived in a small South American town (McGregor thinks it was in Peru) amid a long motorcycle journey, so too did a legion of fans excited to meet Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“We were in a small town and there are these long winding steps all the way up to this famous lighthouse,” McGregor says. “We were going up and someone asked for an autograph. I was happy to do that. Then the same thing happened on another flight of stairs up. Then a bunch of people were arriving going, ‘Oh, we didn’t know where you’d be.’ Turns out (our location) was on a Star Wars social media platform or site. They were always very friendly though. It was never a chore.”
For now, Star Wars is in the rearview.

To celebrate the release of Long Way Up, the eagerly anticipated reuniting of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman after almost 12 years, we sat down with the guys to chat about all things motorbikes.
Together again after their first two trips – Long Way Round and Long Way Down – McGregor and Boorman have mixed things up this time by deciding to do their newest trip on electric motorbikes which presented the duo with some amazing equipment but also proved to be a different challenge altogether, not least with trying to charge their new bikes in the middle of nowhere. But they told us that overall it was the right decision but did make for some heartstopping moments in the show, not least seeing McGregor having to be pulled along to make a once-a-day ferry.

The always dashing and daring Ewan McGregor isn’t one to shy away from difficult roles. Nowhere is this more evident than his latest role in the tsunami film The Impossible, opening in limited release this week before expanding to theatres across the country in January.
The Impossible tells the harrowing account of one family’s experience during the Thailand tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. A British family’s idyllic Christmas beach vacation quickly becomes a nightmare when the giant wave hits their Thai resort in this terrifying true story. Pack yourself some tissues because there won’t be a dry eye in the theatre. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film has gone on to earn some well-deserved raves, especially for the film’s stars Naomi Watts, Tom Holland who plays one of the couple’s young sons, and Ewan McGregor.

Back in September, we reported on Anthony Hopkins getting approached to star as an ailing patriarch in Noah Baumbach's adaptation of The Corrections for Us cable network HBO. But while Hopkins has passed on the project, it has still scored some prime British acting talent, with Ewan McGregor signing on to play a key role in the drama.
Though the project - which Baumbach is scripting with novelist Jonathan Franzen - is still only at the pilot stage, it has already attracted Chris Cooper (to play the father figure Hopkins was approached for) and Diane Wiest as his wife.
The Corrections finds the parents gathering together their dysfunctional family (including middle child Chip, played by McGregor) for a final Christmas as the head of the household reveals that his brain is beginning to fail him. He's turned 40, moved his family to Los Angeles and spends his time tinkering with motorbikes. Midlife crisis? No fear

Chicago – Martin Sheen’s sons certainly command the spotlight, whether it was Charlie’s adventures of this year, or the emerging auteur talent of Emilio Estevez. Estevez wrote and directed the upcoming film “The Way,” which stars his father.

Last month Dave and I participated in a very exciting project to create a documentary chronicling ordinary people making their dream journeys.
Live Every Litre was created to celebrate the new Honda hybrid car, but the scope and purpose of the project expanded when Honda secured the services of Claudio Von Planta, director of the epic Long Way Round and Long Way Down documentaries.
Designed to be the ultimate road movie using a dozen or so journeys, Live Every Litre will follow these disparate people as they travel their roads not taken, and it has been a truly interactive project from the start, and we were involved in putting together the shortlist (you can watch Dave’s video report here)
Making great use of the online and social networking tools available the project was launched and the invitation went out to the whole world to come up with the ultimate journey.

Ewan McGregor is planning to take a break from his movie career to head out on another round-the-world motorbike trip. The "Trainspotting" star teamed up with his pal Charley Boorman for a marathon motorcycle trip in 2004. The pair spent four months on the road traveling from London to New York and covered a cumulative distance of 22,345 miles.
They filmed the trip for their "Long Way Round" television series, which also spawned a bestselling book of the same name. Now McGregor wants to do it all again - he's planning more adventures for summer after a family vacation with his wife, Eve Mavrakis, and their children.
He says, "I've done a lot of hard work recently and I admit that after a burst of intense creativity I've got a bit of wanderlust. I've still got the bike and it's now got a sidecar on it, so I'll take my dog Sid along with me this time.

They filmed the trip for their Long Way Round television series, which also spawned a bestselling book of the same name.
Now McGregor wants to do it all again - he's planning more adventures for this summer after a family vacation with his wife, Eve Mavrakis, and their children.
He says, "I've done a lot of hard work recently and I admit that after a burst of intense creativity I've got a bit of wanderlust. I've still got the bike and it's now got a sidecar on it, so I'll take my dog Sid along with me this time.
"I want to have our summer holidays as a family and then I'd like to get going. It would be a fantastic thing to do. It'll be good to get my leathers and my goggles on again."...

Ewan McGregor's round-the-world travelling companion Charley Boorman has undergone surgery after a testicular cancer scare.
Boorman, son of Deliverance director John Boorman, teamed up with the Trainspotting star for a marathon motorcycle trip from London to New York in 2004.
The pair filmed their adventures for their Long Way Round television series, which also spawned a bestselling book of the same name.
Boorman has revealed he underwent surgery to remove one of his testicles earlier this month after doctors found a lump.
He has now been given the all-clear from medics and is urging other men to check themselves thoroughly.
He says, "The doctors dealt with it very, very quickly. I had a testicle removed and a silicone one put in. I was lucky and everything is fine. In fact, it's quite pretty. Seriously though, it is very important for men to check themselves out properly if they notice any changes. Early diagnosis is key."...

Hollywood star Ewan McGregor will be joined by his wife on his upcoming second televised motorbike trip documentary. The Scottish actor and pal Charley Boorman filmed their biking exploits from London to New York, via Mongolia, Siberia and Alaska, for 2004 series Long Way Round - and now they're planning a second journey from the top of Scotland to the tip of Cape Town, South Africa next year. And McGregor's wife Eve has been learning how to ride a motorbike so she can join her husband for three weeks. McGregor says, "Being away from my wife and kids is hard but it's part of the work of being an actor anyway. My wife is very supportive. She'll be coming out for part of the next trip. I have been married for 11 years and she has rarely even been on the back of a bike but she's training to ride and will do the middle three weeks with us."...

Star Wars star Ewan McGregor is planning another mad motorcycle trip in 2006 from London to Cape Town, South Africa. The bike-mad Scot and fellow actor Charley Boorman teamed up to trek through Europe, Mongolia and Russia to Canada and North America last year, while filming documentary series Long Way Round. And now McGregor is keen to head off on another big adventure. He says, "It's the logical next step. Long Way Down, we'd call it, and we'd get to see all of Africa." And that's not the only bike trip the ambitious actor is planning - he'd like to zoom around Britain on his favorite vintage motorcycle, the BSA Lightning, and he hopes to return to the remote roads of Mongolia for a solo camping trip. He adds, "There's something terribly comforting about visiting remote places and being so far away from home. There's something so beautiful about being alone, having no responsibility, but there's also nothing like coming back to work and to a family I love."...

Ewan McGregor recently encountered a frightening situation as he neared the end of his marathon motorcycle trek - he got stuck in a muddy river. The Moulin Rouge star, who embarked on the 20,000 mile global journey with friend Charlie Boorman on April 14, was biking through Mongolia when the scary incident happened. McGregor writes on website Ridernews.Net, "It was so rainy and muddy that we couldn't get anywhere, we just kept getting stuck and falling off. The worst bit of the whole trip so far though, was when I fell off in a river. It was what I was dreading the most. I had nightmares of baling out and filling the engine with water and stranding us in the middle of nowhere. The moment finally happened when I crossed a river and hit a massive boulder hidden under water. Luckily, as the bike began to fall I hit the kill switch, stopping the engine before it sucked in water. When we dragged it out of the river, it was fine." The epic motorbike journey is being filmed for a seven-part documentary series, Long Way Round, and ends in New York later this week.
