We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.

Set sometime in the 1950s, Monstrous opens as Laura puts her son Cody in the back seat of the car and hits the road for California as “See You Later Alligator” plays on the soundtrack.
She’s leaving Arizona and an abusive ex-husband behind and plans to start over in a safer environment for her and her son. She’s rented a beautiful house by a large pond from Mr. and Mrs. and a job working for Mr. Alonzo.
But this sunny bit of nostalgia is about to turn much darker. Cody is convinced a monster from the lake is stalking them. He also misses home, and despite the reasons for their leaving, his father. Speaking of whom, he’s gotten Laura’s phone number and begins calling.

As our writers continue to argue for films that most people loathe, we want to hear from you
For the last two months, we’ve tasked Guardian writers with the unenviable: putting together an impassioned defence of a film loathed by the masses.
From Lindsay Lohan’s stripper doppelgänger horror I Know Who Killed Me to Steven Spielberg’s CG gopher-wrecking Indiana Jones sequel, there have been some much-debated pleas but now we want to hear from you.

Continuing our series of writers defending maligned movies is a recommendation for Lindsay Lohan’s gory stripper thriller
On 23 August 2007, Lindsay Lohan issued a statement to TMZ in the Hollywood dialect of professional contrition that hints at behind-the-scenes PR damage control. In its 11 brief sentences, she makes a plainspoken admission that she’s “addicted to alcohol and drugs”, that her destructive behavior is no one’s responsibility but her own, and that she’s ready to take the steps required to get her back on the path to wellness. While not quite a turning point for her career, which has remained stagnant over the past decade-plus of self-referential screen roles and regrettable pop singles and swiftly shuttered Grecian nightclubs, that press release did provide a fitting coda to the odd and sordid tale of I Know Who Killed Me.

“mother!” isn’t exactly cleaning up at the multiplex, not that Darren Aronofsky seems terribly let down. His enigmatic thriller scored a rare “F” from CinemaScore, a dubious badge of honor shared with movies both good (Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris”) and bad (“I Know Who Killed Me”); the writer/director has responded to that failing grade on Kpcc’s the Frame, expressing neither surprise nor disappointment.

Aronofsky, who most recently directed “Noah” and “Black Swan,” calls his movie a reflection of the way currently things are in the world — so of course it isn’t winning audiences over en masse. Here are his full comments:
“What’s interesting about that is, like, how if you walk out of this movie are you not going to give it an ‘F?’ It’s a punch. It’s a total punch.

History will ultimately determine the merits of Darren Aronofsky‘s divisive “mother!,” but among the many things it will be remembered for, is being one of only 19 movies in history receive an F-grade CinemaScore. Determined by exit polls of moviegoers’ opinions of films on opening night, the movies that have been deemed as failures include terrific pictures like William Friedkin‘s “Bug” and Andrew Dominik‘s “Killing Them Softly,” and interesting efforts like Steven Soderbergh‘s “Solaris.” But yes, there is also trash on there too like the Lindsay Lohan flick “I Know Who Killed Me” and the parody flick “Disaster Movie.” However, Aronofsky believes there’s no way his “mother!” could’ve received any other score.

“mother!” has accomplished a rare feat: the dreaded “F” CinemaScore. Darren Aronofsky’s new thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem has earned largely positive reviews from critics, but its failing grade suggests that multiplex audiences might not take to its oddity as well — especially given that the film is in nearly 2,400 theaters.
Based in Las Vegas, CinemaScore surveys audiences every weekend to gauge their reactions to new movies and see what effect that might have on box-office returns; ballots have six questions. Other movies to earn the rare distinction are Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris” remake, Andrew Dominik’s “Killing Them Softly,” William Friedkin’s “Bug,” and “I Know Who Killed Me” — so not exactly crowd-pleasers.
Still, it might not be so bad.

If a film gets a Cinemascore of B or C, it's often classed as a disappointment. But what is a Cinemascore?
The process of marketing a movie is now an operation that lasts many months across all sorts of media, from bus stop posters to social media campaigns, all in pursuit of making sure the movie makes an impact in its opening weekend. Tracking and analytics can give an indication of how audiences are responding before the movie even hits cinemas, but it's only in that opening weekend, once they've actually seen the movie, that you can get a more accurate read on public opinion.
Box office aside, one way in which Hollywood's studios reads public response after release is Cinemascore, the Las Vegas-based market research firm which conducts nationwide exit polls. Billed as “Hollywood's Benchmark”, the company's researchers gathers information from filmgoers and the results, expressed as letter grades,...

Movie posters are there to sell the movie. But some of them sell the movie too well, making you think a bad film will be a really, really good one.
To celebrate those rare moments when the publicity succeeds where the movie doesn't, here are just ten examples of great posters for terrible films.
1. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 57%
The teaser poster for the second coming of Star Wars was screaming-in-the-street exciting when it first hit bus stop billboards. Intriguingly, there's no mention of hyper-annoying sidekicks or intergalactic tax systems anywhere on it. Hmm.
2. Cobra (1986)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 13%
So masculine it made men pregnant, the poster for action disasterpiece Cobra drips with virility. Alas, the film dripped with so much blood that the first cut earned an X rating, forcing reshoots that made an already preposterous plot crumple like a crisp packet in Sly's massive manly fists.

She certainly knows how to get attention, and last night (July 15) Lindsay Lohan had all the guys drooling at the Ischia Film Festival Awards Dinner Gala in Ischia, Italy.
The “I Know Who Killed Me” cutie showed off her stellar figure in a lovely red dress with matching heels as she made her rounds at the Mezzatorre Resort and Spa.
Thankfully, LiLo managed to stay on her feet during the event, unlike her embarrassing spill the previous evening.
Meanwhile, Lindsay told the BBC that she’s considering a move to London- "I think I am making the move to come over here...I've noticed when I'm watching the news here and such, you guys have such a different outlook.
Lucky Mckee has had his ups and downs with various projects from the criminally underseen The Woods to the success of films like The Woman. With his latest, All Cheerleaders Die, Mckee collaborated with his old college buddy Chris Sivertson to relive their college days by fleshing out a short film to a full feature film filled with cheerful mayhem.
Here’s what Mckee had to say about the film, which is now available on VOD with a Blu-ray/DVD release on July .
Dread Central: Did your success working with Jack Ketchum lean you towards collaborating again this time around with Chris? What advantages do you find in that kind of mutual relationship?
Lucky McKee: Film is, in its essence, a collaborative art. It's a blast to create stories with good brains. Chris and I have collaborated like this since we were teenagers so it's pretty natural at this point.

Co-director and writer Chris Sivertson took the time to speak with us recently regarding his collaboration with longtime friend and cohort Lucky Mckee for their new film All Cheerleaders Die, which enjoyed its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Dread Central:Can you talk a little about how long the idea for All Cheerleaders Die has been rolling around in both of your heads? Did it just arise from a late night wandering around the USC campus?
Chris Sivertson: We came up with the idea about a year out of film school at USC. We'd been reading indie magazines, seeing how filmmakers were picking up the first Dv cameras and making b-movies for very little money. We watched a bunch of those films and decided that it would be a great format to shoot our first feature. Low cost, low risk, freedom to experiment. So we cooked up a simple idea: football players vs.

Always an avid fan of fashion, Lindsay Lohan showed up at the Moschino presentation during the London Collections: Men SS 15 at Lindley Hall on Monday (June 16).
The “I Know Who Killed Me” cutie looked lovely and leggy in a short black dress while posing up a storm for the shutterbugs outside the event.
Meanwhile back in the States, Lindsay’s supposed sex partner list is getting blasted again, this time by controversial photographer Terry Richardson.
In his New York Magazine article “Is Terry Richardson an Artist or a Predator?” he declares,
“LiLo. Somehow she said we spent a romantic night making love at the Chateau Marmont. Which never happened. Then, on the internet, people are like, ‘He did this and that.’ But it’s totally untrue.”...

What do Cecil B. De Mille, Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Mann, and Michael Haneke have in common? They all remade movies they had themselves previously directed. Filmmakers Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (I Know Who Killed Me) can now claim membership of this small but illustrious group thanks to their new collaboration All Cheerleaders Die, a remake of the pair’s 2001 horror movie.
Released to cinemas tomorrow (and also available on VOD) the revamped All Cheerleaders Die stars Caitlin Stasey, Brooke Butler, Amanda Grace Cooper, and Reanin Johannink as a quartet of cheerleaders who die in a car...

Sapphic Sillies: Sivertson & McKee’s Latest Lacks Spirit
Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson, old college friends and now notably notorious film directors (though for different reasons) have paired up to share directorial and screenwriting credit for their new film, All Cheerleaders Die, a film which happily delivers content that matches its over-the-top title. Originally, this was a short film of the duo’s from 2001, now developed for feature length, though one gets the sense that there’s not quite enough material to justify the expansion. Sadly, this is hardly on par with McKee’s other perversely enjoyable horror films, such as the exceptional May (2002) or the gritty schlock of The Woman (2011). The good news is, it’s definitely better than Sivertson’s infamous 2007 film, I Know Who Killed Me (2007).
Maddy (Caitlin Stasey) is a rebellious outsider at high school, certainly not involved with the popular girls, but certainly not a social outcast either.

Her life has never been a picture of consistency, so it’s not exactly surprising that Lindsay Lohan almost fell off the wagon again recently.
During the fourth episode of “Lindsay,” the “I Know Who Killed Me” actress was asked if she’s been able to maintain her sobriety in the midst of the New York City club scene.
LiLo admitted, “I do love the nightlife and hearing loud music and laughing and having fun… I’m sober but I’ve been very close — it came very close, and it’s really scary.”
Meanwhile, Lohan’s sober coach Michael Cormier made a reluctant transition out of her life to avoid “becoming a crutch” for her.
“That is between Lindsay and Lindsay. I have no hard evidence that she’s not [maintained her sobriety]. The truth is that she has everything available to her to do what needs to be done, and I just...

Ahead of the premiere of Lindsay Lohan‘s new docu-reality series, we wanted to take a closer look at her career (and personal) recovery. While most view the time around the release of I Know Who Killed Me as her big breakdown moment, troubles for the actress started shortly after the success of Mean Girls. Lohan was under a microscope. After collapsing during the making of Herbie: Fully Loaded and getting into a string of car accidents, her her star started to diminish. Suddenly everyone was wondering if she was worth the effort or even all the unwanted attention. Since then, Lohan has been struggling to bounce back and erase any memory of the past decade with a series of comeback attempts.
Comeback Attempt #1: Don’t Call It a Comeback

Glamour! Elegance! The sweet smell of self-congratulation! None will be present at the 34th annual Razzie Awards, a proudly low-budget event dedicated to dishonoring the previous year’s worst movies. (Actually, make that “no-budget”; have you seen the Razzies’ website? It looks like a Geocities page from 1996.)
There are several strong contenders in this year’s Razzies race, from father-and-son team Will and Jaden Smith to perennial “winner” Adam Sandler and Golden Raspberry Award Foundation favorite Sylvester Stallone, who snagged a record-breaking 31st nomination for his work in three 2013 films. (Note: It is not hard to become a member of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation.

Things have not exactly gone well for Lindsay Lohan over the past few years. Her stints in drug and alcohol rehab, public breakups, and criminal charges did nothing for her once-promising career. Neither did her appearances in Liz & Dick or The Canyons – whoever advised her that it was a good idea to appear in a Easton-Ellis scripted film with a porn star has hopefully been fired. But Lohan is still trying to revive her career, no matter how dead in the water it seems to be.

The film is being produced by Emmett/Furla Films on a small budget of $5 million, so it makes sense that the company would make their announcement at an independent film festival. Word just came down that Image Entertainment has picked up the complete Us rights for All Cheerleaders Die, the occult horror-comedy feature from co-directors Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) and Chris Sivertson (The Lost, I Know Who Killed Me). Described as a combination of teen cult classics like Heathers and high-school horrors like Jennifer's Body and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Cheerleaders is the remake of a 2001 indie project of the same name by McKee & Sivertson, and involves an occult-practicing teen who takes supernatural revenge on her school's football team... with unexpected and horrifying results. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Image sales picked up the rights after a successful Midnight Madness screening at this year's Toronto's International Film Festival. A theatrical release is now slated for Spring 2014.
