Two trials play out in the new Apple TV+ adaptation of lawyer-novelist Scott Turow’s 1988 bestselling legal thriller, Presumed Innocent: the criminal case against a Chicago prosecutor charged with murdering a colleague, and the nightmare at home that the murder trial visits on the family of the accused.
Those parallel ordeals stood out for actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who stars in the eight-episode limited series that premieres on Wednesday and runs through July 24. At Sunday’s premiere of Presumed Innocent at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Gyllenhaal spoke in a panel discussion with showrunner and writer David E. Kelley and two directors, Anne Sewitsky and Gregg Yaitanes, about “the trial of the family and the actual trial” and “the juxtaposition between the two.”

Scott Turow wrote his first novel, Presumed Innocent, in 1987. Three years later, it was adapted into a movie starring Harrison Ford. Fast-forward over thirty years, and David E. Kelley, known for hit shows like The Practice, Alley McBeal, and Big Little Lies, is adapting the novel to the small screen for Apple TV+. This crime thriller features magnificent twists and turns and two powerful performances by Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga.
Presumed Innocent Plot
Presumed Innocent follows the story of a Chicago Prosecutor who finds himself a suspect in the middle of a horrific murder. The series explores sex, politics, and obsession as Rusty Sabich fights to keep his family and marriage together.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Bill Camp in “Presumed Innocent,” premiering June 12, 2024 on Apple TV+.
The Critique
David E. Kelley, a master of the thriller genre, takes on the challenge of breathing new life into a story we thought we knew.

On paper, Presumed Innocent might sound like your standard courtroom thriller… but there’s no one you’d rather have writing one of those than David E. Kelley. The man has been cranking out quality TV legal dramas since the days of L.A. Law, and the mind behind Ally McBeal and The Practice delivers once again as writer and showrunner of this new Apple TV+ series, premiering this Wednesday. (I’ve seen seven of the eight episodes.) Kelley takes a familiar premise — one that’s quite similar to Paramount+’s far inferior Fatal Attraction remake, in fact — and spins it into a sturdy,...

Created by David E. Kelley and based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel of the same name, Presumed Innocent is a twisty legal thriller revolving around a murky case and morally compromised characters. We won’t find out who’s guilty until the very end of the Apple TV+ series, but with each reveal we start to realize that nobody is entirely innocent.
Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), Chicago’s chief deputy prosecutor, appears to be living the dream, cleaning up the streets by day and returning to his luxurious home at night to crash on the couch with his beautiful wife, Barbara (Ruth Negga), and their two children, Jaden (Chase Infiniti) and Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick). But that seemingly idyllic dream turns into a nightmare when Rusty’s colleague and secret lover, Carolyn Polmheus (Renate Reinsve), is brutally murdered and he finds himself at the very top of the suspects list.

With a career that’s ranged 33 years — over three quarters of his life — Jake Gyllenhaal has covered nearly every type of character, genre, and form, but in a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter, he said he’s now focused on taking on roles that “freak me out a bit.” Whether that means getting cut and learning to give and take a beating for Doug Liman’s “Road House” remake or wading through the moral and ethical murk of murder and infidelity in the upcoming Apple TV+ mini-series “Presumed Innocent,” Gyllenhaal is game for a challenge.
“The feeling I want to have is, can I do it?” said Gyllenhaal. “That it’s going to ask of me things that I don’t know about myself yet.”

The June skies are clear as the Tribeca Festival gathers indie filmmakers from around the globe with a large slate of features and shorts, music, games, TV, audio storytelling and a major addition this year in De Niro Con, a tribute to the prolific actor and Tribeca co-founder.
The fest moved from April to June in part for the weather but that can’t be taken for granted — last year’s edition opened to a city blanketed with acrid smoke from Canadian wildfires as Mayor Eric Adams handed De Niro the key to the city at a press conference and Tribeca unveiled De Niro Con. Fan events and screenings with star power from Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, David O. Russell, Christopher Walken and others will unspool over the last four days of the festival.

The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

When images started to surface of Jake Gyllenhaal filming a UFC fight scene for the Road House remake, audiences got a glimpse at how the Doug Liman film for Amazon would differentiate itself from the original Patrick Swayze film from 1989. The consensus was that making Dalton a former professional fighter was an interesting twist that wouldn’t make the remake a complete copy of the Swayze film. However, the die-hard fans would remain skeptical. Now that the film has been released on Prime Video (along with the controversy of not being given a theatrical window), many agree that it doesn’t have the heart of the original, but there is still a division among the viewers on who may have still found it serviceable.
Despite the mixed reception, the remake was a big hit for Amazon MGM and a sequel had already been greenlit. Along with Road House‘s success,...

Jake Gyllenhaal pulls his glasses out of his jean jacket pocket, the Coke bottle lenses in them strong enough to correct his 20/1250 vision. Yes, you read that right. These are not Internet Boyfriend glasses, to be styled with a fuzzy cardigan and a rakish smile. These are I Literally Can’t See glasses. Looking through them with normal vision feels like being on some sort of a hallucinogenic.
Gyllenhaal, 43, has been wearing intensive corrective lenses since he was about 6. Born with a lazy eye that naturally resolved, he’s still legally blind. “I like to think it’s advantageous,” he says. “I’ve never known anything else. Summer is no time for sadness, with new shows debuting throughout the season. With the official 2024 Emmys deadline now in the rearview, June is when the TV calendar resets, with new and returning shows now eligible for next year’s awards ceremony… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
June’s new TV lineup includes a handful of book adaptations, including Hulu’s “Queenie” starring Dionne Brown, Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” with Renate Reinsve and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Eva Longoria-starrer “Land of Women,” and Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane,” based on the YA series The Lady Janies (and loosely on some Tudor history… very loosely). Shows like “Clipped” and “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” stem from books about real people and events, while on the reality front there’s also Peacock’s “Queer Planet” and a docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleader squad on Netflix. The legal thriller miniseries Presumed Innocent is one of Apple TV+’s most anticipated movies of the summer of 2024. Apple TV+ has earned a reputation for the quality of its shows in recent times. Like most miniseries, Presumed Innocent is based on Scott Turow’s 1987 bestselling novel of the same name. Presumed Innocent was Turow’s first-ever fiction novel, with several others also becoming bestsellers. The Apple TV+ miniseries isn’t the first time the novel has been adapted for screen. Its first adaptation, the 1990 Harrison Ford-led movie, was a massive Box Office hit, grossing $221 million on a $20 million...

Every time a TV or movie crew is asked to adapt a popular novel, there is a chance that it will go horribly wrong. While some novels are easier to retell in new formats, others are impossible to make into a coherent script without changing too many things or adding too many new plots to fill in the holes.
If there's already a perfectly good adaptation of a novel, many believe it's better to leave it alone as a good example. In the case of Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, however, the story ended up looking too good to leave behind.

Jake Gyllenhaal is ready for his close-up… on the small screen this time. Yep, that’s right. He can no longer be considered one of those movies-only actors resisting the television world anymore because he’s starring in Apple TV+‘s adaptation of Presumed Innocent. The crime thriller features him in the lead and looks to keep audiences on their toes ’til the end — at least, those who haven’t read the book or seen the previous adaptation, but more on that later. Here’s everything you need to know about Presumed Innocent. What is Presumed Innocent about? Presumed Innocent is a crime thriller based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Scott Turow. The story centers on a Chicago prosecutor named Rožat “Rusty” Sabich (Gyllenhaal), who is accused of murdering his colleague Carolyn, with whom he was secretly having an intimate relationship, despite being married. Apple TV+ has now released the new tense trailer for Presumed Innocent, the limited series coming to the streaming service courtesy of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. The legal drama has Jake Gyllenhaal in for the fight of his life as he defends himself from allegations of murdering a peer with whom he shared a complicated entanglement. It doesn’t look good for Gyllenhaal’s character, as a plethora of evidence is working against him, and he can only continually profess his innocence.
The official synopsis reads,
“Gyllenhaal is set to star as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose world is upended when a close colleague is murdered — and the evidence begins to point to Rusty himself. The role would be his first ongoing part in a TV series. Presumed Innocent was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Sabich, along with Bonnie Bedelia and Raul Julia.

Jake Gyllenhaal is arguably one of the bravest actors of his generation, venturing into different genres and attempting risky projects throughout his career. As a child actor, he gained prominence in the role of Homer Hickam in 1999’s October Sky. The young actor would go on to star in one of the most influential films of the 2000s Donnie Darko.
Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam in 1999’s October Sky
The complex psychological thriller was directed by Richard Kelly with Gyllenhaal playing the titular role. Most people were blown away by the film’s ambition and were left thinking about the complicated narrative and the ambiguous nature of its ending. Gyllenhaal considers this the biggest achievement of the film which has led to its resonance to this day.

Less than two months after the release of Prime Video’s remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, a Road House sequel film is in the works.
Per Variety, Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Dalton in the upcoming film. Other details, including whether director Doug Liman will also return, are unknown at this time.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, the first installment “has attracted nearly 80 million worldwide viewers to-date. The film premiered on Prime Video March 21 and attracted a record-breaking over 50 million worldwide viewers over its first two weekends, becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.”
In her review of Road House, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller noted that while director Doug Liman may have been fuming about Amazon’s decision to not release the film theatrically, it didn’t exactly matter: “The original film became a cult favorite not theatrically but as...

There’s a first-look photo from “Presumed Innocent” that’s so evocative you’d assume it was planned. In the image from the Apple TV+ series, which premieres June 12, Jake Gyllenhaal stands in a courtroom looking distraught. His hands are clasped in front of his rumpled shirt, and at first glance, it looks like he’s been handcuffed by the policeman who’s hooking his arm. That’s a solid visual metaphor for a story about a man being prosecuted for murder.
But while it’s the stuff of a publicist’s dreams, the photograph was a happy accident. “I was plunked down on the floor, and it was just the luck of me capturing the stuff that was unfolding around me,” said unit photographer Michael Becker. “Sometimes, you get lucky enough to capture a moment that draws you into what’s going on.”
That’s how it goes in his business.
