Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino knows how to make a goddamn movie. That was clear to fans of his earlier works, like the sumptuous "I Am Love," more than a decade ago. It was clear to most other people about five years ago when the bold one-two punch of "Call Me By Your Name" and "Suspiria" made moviegoers sit up and pay attention. And it's more clear than ever now, with the release of the director's latest (and reportedly biggest-budgeted) effort, the endlessly thrilling Zendaya-led sports drama "Challengers." Film after film, Guadagnino manages to tap into some hidden corners of our hearts by telling stories that are evocative and colorful, musical and sensual, messy and true.
Though Guadagnino has gained more attention in recent years, the filmmaker has actually been working since the '90s and has by now made eight narrative (or meta-narrative) features, a TV show, and several documentaries and shorts.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the final trailer for Challengers, starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court.
Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick—his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
As their pasts and present collide and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself what it will cost to win. In addition to the trailer, you can also watch a featurette on the film’s music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers is rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, and graphic nudity. The drama will open in theaters on Friday, April 26, 2024.
Guadagnino directed the movie from a script by Justin Kuritzkes.

Challengers is releasing to theaters and we’re celebrating with a giveaway!
Zendaya sizzles in the steamy new film from acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino — who brought us Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Suspiria (2018) and A Bigger Splash — combines the world of competitive tennis with the steamy messiness of a love triangle. It’s a fast paced and flashy film that marks Zendaya’s second major theatrical release of the year, following Dune: Part Two. Joining the Spider-Man: No Way Home star are Josh O’Connor (The Crown) and Mike Faist (West Side Story) as former friends now competing for the affection of the alluring Tashi.
I had the pleasure of catching an advanced screening at the beginning of the month and I had an absolute blast with this one-of-a-king film. You can check out my full review below. Originally scheduled to be released in September of 2023 before...

“Are we talking about tennis?” asks Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) in a mid-aughts flashback as chugging, four-on-the-floor beats kick in to accompany an argument between him and his sure-to-turn-pro girlfriend, Tashi Duncan (Zendaya). It’s one of several instances in director Luca Guadagnino’s sexy, swaggering sports drama Challengers where the characters make subtext into text. “We’re always talking about tennis,” she responds, but in Justin Kuritzkes’s screenplay, tennis isn’t just tennis—it’s sex, it’s power, it’s self-determination, or, as Tashi herself puts it at one point, “it’s a relationship.” What do we talk about when we talk about tennis? In Challengers at least, it’s absolutely everything else.
Challengers frames its drama against a 2019 Atp event where the sport’s biggest star, 33-year-old Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), is competing to regain some confidence after a professional rough patch on his way to a Grand Slam.

"I loved making this film. It's a rollercoaster... and you feel that." MGM Studios has revealed a featurette for Challengers, the latest film from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. It's finally landing in theaters this month! Following a long delay from last year. After a losing streak, the wife and coach of a Grand Slam champion signs him up for a Challenger event where he will face off against her former lover – and his former competitor. The full cast includes Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist as the trio caught up in this lovers' quarrel, plus A.J. Lister and Jake Jensen. The two official trailers for this have been mostly good, this featurette adds a bit more context to Tashi, Zendaya's character, though there isn't much footage as it's less than 60 seconds long. We'll add more featurettes below for Challengers as they're unveiled. Looking forward to finally seeing this in a few weeks.

The tennis-meets-love triangle film “Challengers” will be released in April, but ever since the first trailer hit viewers have been curious about how far the film’s threesome at its center will go in the sexually charged movie. The film stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist as a trio of tennis pros who have an overlapping romantic past. One scene in particular features all three sharing an intimate experience, something that O’Connor described as “fairly organic” in the filming process.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, “The Durrells in Corfu” star explained that the three stars worked together to bring “Call Me by Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino’s vision to life.
“Luca had a very clear idea of what happens on the bed. The idea of me and Mike, with Zendaya in the middle—this idea that it’s kissing, kissing, and then it turns into this...

Trailers are designed to stir up excitement, the amuse-bouche that whets your appetite for the three-course meal. Occasionally, the oldest marketing trick in the book backfires. When Sony dropped a sneak peek at Madame Web, the newest addition to the company’s roster of Spider-Man–related films and another of their corporate crossovers with the good folks at Marvel Studios, the reaction was … not exactly what they hoped for. The same fans they were hoping to get riled up about a batch of fresh Spidey-adjacent characters began to mock the clip,...

From Wim Wenders’ recent Anselm Kiefer documentary to Kirk Douglas’s tortured Van Gogh and Derek Jarman’s erotic ode to Caravaggio, cinema loves a brush with genius
Visual art, oddly, doesn’t always translate that naturally to cinema as a subject. Just as you don’t get the full impact of a painting from a coffee table book, the camera can impose a distance from the art at hand – a secondary perspective that isn’t really needed. Wim Wenders bucks that trend, however, in his marvellous Anselm Kiefer documentary Anselm (Curzon Home Cinema), which feels fully alive to the angular, nature-based textures of the German painter and sculptor’s work. It’s especially exciting as a study of process – of the grand-scale action that goes into the art’s own dynamic movement.
A large part of its reward came, on the big screen, from Wenders’ continuingly imaginative embrace of 3D technology.

Dakota Johnson sounded off on the industry in a new interview with L’Officiel ahead of the release of her superhero tentpole “Madame Web.” The actor reflected on bringing her indie drama “Daddio” to a film festival last year, where she says it took a whole lot of effort to get it sold despite it starring her and Oscar winner Sean Penn in the lead roles.
“We made a movie called ‘Daddio‘ that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made,” Johnson said. “People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Everyone who makes decisions is afraid. They want to do the safe thing and the safe thing is really boring.

Matteo Garrone’s talent for weaving stories out of the fabric of real events––especially those involving desperate or violent people––gets another airing in Io Capitano, an engrossing, visceral portrait of one young man’s brutal journey from Senegal to the coast of Italy. The director won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2008 for Gomorrah, his defining, excoriating portrait of the Camorra crime syndicate, and he performed the trick again ten years later in Dogman, inspired by a gruesome gangland murder in Rome. He’s also had success in comedies (Reality) and fantasy (Tale of Tales), but his new film is an epic embracing the defining issue of Italian politics right now––the flow of refugees crossing the Mediterranean heading for Europe––making a potentially abstract, no-less-urgent topic tactile and approachable.

Luca Guadagnino is putting a brave face on the sudden pulling last month of new movie Challengers from the prestigious opening slot of the Venice Film Festival, after the actors’ strike grounded its U.S. cast led by Zendaya.
The Venice regular – who won its Best Director award in 2022 for Bones And All, having also premiered A Bigger Splash and Suspiria in Competition; I Am Love in Orizzonti and first feature The Protagonists in the now defunct New Territories sidebar – considers the festival his “home” and will still be out in force on the Lido.
The Oscar-nominated Call Me By Your Name director and producer is attending with two productions made under his Frenesy Film Company banner: short animated documentary The Meatseller and Italian actor Pietro Castellitto’s feature directorial debut Enea in Competition.

Jack Hazan and David Mingay's Rude Boy is now showing exclusively on Mubi in most countries—including the United Kingdom, Brazil, India, Turkey, and Ireland—in the series Rediscovered.London, 1978: Ray Gange, a purposeless punk, shuffles from the unemployment benefit office to his beer-money job at a porno bookstore, selling dirty magazines to shifty-looking customers. Meanwhile, young fascists storm the streets, hurling abuse and waving banners in their fight against “communism in the classroom” and “race-mix propaganda.” Margaret Thatcher is on the cusp of seizing power and the National Front is at the height of its popularity. Racist graffiti, large-scale unemployment, run-down social housing, and right-wing riots: in five minutes flat, Rude Boy (1980) tells you everything you need to know about Britain at the dark end of the 1970s.As much a gritty social-realist document of a country in transition as a charged concert film of the pioneering punk band the Clash,...

After delivering a blisteringly saucy trailer, Luca Guadagnino’s latest film “Challengers” will set the Venice Film Festival ablaze as their opening night film, screening out of competition, TheWrap has confirmed.
The film follows Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a successful tennis champ drawn to two men, played by Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. But the pair continue to become entwined in each other’s lives to a dangerous degree.
This isn’t the first time Guadagnino has debuted a feature at the Venice Film Festival. His 2009 feature “I Am Love” screened at the fest, as well as 2015’s “A Bigger Splash,” 2018’s “Suspiria” and last year’s “Bones and All.” Zendaya has also had a feature screen in Venice, with 2021’s “Dune,” the second half of which will debut later this year.
The script comes from newcomer Justin Kuritzkes with Amy Pascal, Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya and Rachel O’Connor acting as producers.

It’s game, set, match in the sexy first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s latest feature, “Challengers.” The latest from the “Bones and All” director tells the story of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy turned coach who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Showing Up contains many of the hallmarks of a classic Kelly Reichardt picture: a Pacific Northwest setting, a Jonathan Raymond co-writing credit, Christopher Blauvelt cinematography, a rich ensemble cast, and an unrivaled attention to locations, production design, and wardrobe. There’s also Michelle Williams appearing in her fourth Reichardt film, their collaboration having begun with 2008’s Wendy and Lucy.
In Showing Up, Williams is Lizzy, a talented sculptor who finds herself a bit worn down by the realities of modern life. By all accounts she has a decent day job––something she likely wouldn’t refute––working in the office of the liberal arts college she attended. Outside of offering her rent and cat food money, the position keeps Lizzy plugged into the local art scene and most importantly grants her free access to the campus kiln (operated by André Benjamin in a joyful role).

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Bones and All.”]
When David Kajganich was first presented with Camille DeAngelis’ novel “Bones and All,” the screenwriter didn’t initially realize the cannibal romance was intended for YA readers. Instead, the “Blood Creek” and “A Bigger Splash” writer was taken with the book’s fairytale quality, the wonderful romance at its heart, and its ability to interrogate “other”-ness in an entirely new way.
It was also, of course, fairly juicy — literally and figuratively — and ripe for the screenwriter to apply his own ideas. It helped that Kajganich’s frequent collaborator, director Luca Guadagnino, came on board to direct the film, bringing along stars Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet to play the love-crossed young cannibals at its center. After debuting at Venice, earning accolades on the festival circuit, and enjoying a very tasty opening weekend in limited release, “Bones and All” arrives in wide release this week.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” feels like the movie he’s been working towards for his entire career. A beautiful, coming-of-age road movie that follows two lovestruck cannibals (played by Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet) who venture out on an odyssey across Reagan’s America. It combines the deeply felt emotional honesty of something like “Call Me By Your Name” with the Grand Guignol expressiveness of his “Suspiria” remake. What might be even more incredible than how snugly “Bones and All” fits into Guadagnino’s filmography is the fact that he almost didn’t do it at all.
“Well, when I read the book, I thought a lot about Luca because we had just had two relatively back-to-back collaborations on ‘A Bigger Splash’ and ‘Suspiria.’ And Luca wasn’t available to take on another project at the time,” writer David Kajganich told TheWrap.

Luca Guadagnino was inspired to dive back into “A Bigger Splash” after a lifetime achievement award put his career in perspective.
Guadagnino’s 2015 psychological drama starring Tilda Swinton as a rock star whose ex (Ralph Fiennes) and his seductive daughter (Dakota Johnson) interrupt her vacation with her current boyfriend (Matthias Schoenaerts) is now being recut into a longer iteration, titled “An Even Bigger Splash.”
“I got a great honor at the Göteborg Film Festival. They gave me this lifetime achievement, which embarrasses me to say. I was 50 then,” Guadagnino told Vanity Fair about what inspired the recut of the film. “But I love Göteborg so I said, ‘Ok, I’ll do it.’ They wanted to make a retrospective of my movies and I said, ‘No, that’s not possible, because I don’t have a body of work that can make into a retrospective yet!’ I said, ‘Why don’t...

The last narrative feature Luca Guadagnino directed was a 2018 remake of Suspiria, and his angle was vicious—a dark, mangled body horror so carnal it leaves the original looking like an episode of Sesame Street. The year before that he exploded onto the scene with Call Me by Your Name, the heartwrenching gay Italian countryside romance that thrust Timothée Chalamet into a peach and, thus, the pop-cultural spotlight. Guadagnino’s now back with a fusion of the two: a fleshy, gory body horror romance that rips your heart right out of your chest, Bones and All.
The three, along with 2015’s A Bigger Splash, also share a common theme: they’re all about people traveling to a new place, an unknown, which is exactly where Guadagnino wants to take us in his movies. 25 years into his career, the Italian filmmaker has proven mastery in the art of narrative shock.
