It hasn't been a good summer at the box office thus far (which might be the understatement of the year), and 2024 has left the industry at large with a lot of questions it needs to answer sooner rather than later. Be that as it may, we can always rely on horror, it seems, to pepper in some optimism. To that end, IFC's unrated slasher "In a Violent Nature" posted the company's second-best opening weekend over recently, adding to the studio's surprisingly good year.
With no new big releases hitting theaters in the post-Memorial Day frame, "The Garfield Movie" topped the charts with an anemic $14 million in an overall terrible weekend. But that left plenty of room for everything else, including "In a Violent Nature." Director Chris Nash's acclaimed, low-budget feature directorial debut made $2.1 million on just over 1,400 screens, placing number eight on the charts just behind Crunchyroll's...

The bar wasn’t very high to clear, but Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 did manage to break a box office record here in 2024, achieving the highest opening weekend at the domestic box office out of any horror movie released this year… so far. This despite largely negative reviews, once again proving that the horror genre is as review-proof as it comes.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 debuted with $11.83M at the domestic box office in 2,856 locations, just barely topping Blumhouse’s Night Swim to rip the crown off the top of its head.
Here’s the full lineup of domestic opening weekends for horror this year…
The Strangers: Chapter 1 – $11.8 million Night Swim – $11.7 million Abigail – $10.2 million Imaginary – $9.9 million The First Omen – $8.3 million Tarot – $6.5 million Immaculate – $5.3 million Lisa Frankenstein – $3.6 million
For further context and comparison, 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night opened to $10.4 million before making $31 million worldwide, a number Chapter 1 may eventually reach.

Since the film is being produced and distributed by Universal, which streamer it will land on is easy to answer; when, however, is more complicated.
Did you hear a distinctive call coming from the western skies on Wednesday? If so, it might have been caused by the release of the thrillifying trailer for the upcoming film adaptations of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked.” Directed by Jon M. Chu, the iconic musical will be broken up into two films, with the first will be released on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, the day before Thanksgiving. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film’s trailer already has the internet buzzing and while the musical’s legions of fans will undoubtedly show up to see the film in theaters, you might already be wondering when you will be able to stream Erivo’s “Defying Gravity” on repeat at home. Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

Unlike big-budget blockbusters that often depend on famous faces or explosive (and expensive) set pieces to draw audiences into the theater, the horror genre has been thriving for decades with no-name actors, shoestring budgets, and still pulling in huge profits thanks to a quality idea that audiences want to see. If the characters in the film are more than likely not going to make it to the end credits, there's no need to shell out the dough for a household name when they're just going to be killed off.
Fortunately, horror films also frequently inspire unprovoked reactions from audiences that work better than any marketing campaign ever could. A24 struck gold when audience members were reportedly fainting during preview screenings of "Talk to Me," which certainly helped skyrocket the film's popularity and contributed to it becoming the production company's highest-grossing horror film, ever, even surpassing Ari Aster's "Hereditary."

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Horror has been a real anchor for the box office in the pandemic era, with franchises like "Halloween" and originals like "M3GAN" managing to break through in a meaningful way. Now, Universal Pictures is looking to strike with something original while also playing in familiar territory with "Abigail." The upcoming horror film deals with vampires, something Universal has done dating back to the original "Dracula" more than 90 years ago. But this one comes with a pretty unique spin on the tried-and-true genre. The question is, will it be enough to motivate moviegoers to turn up for a vampire movie? Or will this be another unfortunate misfire for the studio?

American author Stephen King is much loved by his fans for crafting some of the most iconic horror stories. The author has written many cult classics like It, The Shining, Pet Sematary, The Outsider, and more.
His books have also inspired multiple TV and film productions, with the 1980s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, being the most popular. Hence, it’s no surprise that the 76-year-old writer is considered an authority in the horror genre.
Most recently, King shared his take on a 2024 horror film which received an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 21%. The author disagreed with critics’ opinions about the film.

Citing inspirations such as Jaws, Christine, and Poltergeist, the ensuing four minutes play with the uncanny feeling of being watched by somebody, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. It was an impressive enough debut that Blumhouse picked it up for a feature-length adaptation, also entitled Night Swim, although the results are more sink than swim.
After a degenerative illness forces him into early retirement, former baseball player Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) moves into a new house with his wife, Eve Waller (Kerry Condon), and their two children. With a backyard swimming pool offering fun for the kids and physical therapy for the dad,...

Last week saw the release of a pretty terrible Blumhouse horror movie in Imaginary. This followed their other terrible outing this year, Night Swim. Both of these were PG-13 ventures which failed on nearly every conceivable level. This is the same company that produced great horror films like Get Out, The Invisible Man, and The Black Phone. Those films had such imagination and respect for the genre. So what the hell happened?
The biggest issue with Blumhouse these days is that there’s no apparent passion behind these PG-13, middle-of-the-road horror movies like what we’ve seen from them this year. They used to take unproven filmmakers, give them a chance with a low budget, and get results. Sure, those results would vary, but there was at least some kind of momentum that was more than just profit-based. Because the Blumhouse of new seems to just be chasing trends. What’s that?...

The Blumhouse horror Night Swim is coming to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK, and it’s getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release.
A quiet-ish start to the year for Blumhouse in 2024, kicking off back in January with Night Swim, a horror thriller that didn’t quite manage to find an audience. It didn’t find much acclaim either, but still, it’s likely to pick up a bit of interest now it’s on its way to home formats.
Here in the UK, Night Swim has already made it to digital release, and it’s available for a premium price for the minute. But the physical media release is around the corner too, with 22nd April inked in for its disc debut.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given its weak-ish box office, Night Swim won’t be getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc release. But it is nonetheless set to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray,...

Soon after the release of M3GAN in January of 2023, it was announced that the team behind the film – Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster – were aiming to replicate M3GAN‘s January theatrical success by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. The movie didn’t manage to go over as well or get as much attention as M3GAN did, and was given a VOD release by the end of January. Now it’s set to receive a Collector’s Edition digital release tomorrow, March 12th, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow on April 9th – and these releases of Night Swim will be accompanied by featurettes and a commentary.

It’s looking like Kung Fu Panda is about to K’O Dune: Part Two at the box office – for this weekend anyway – with the Dreamworks sequel on its way to the highest-grossing weekend of the franchise since the original film in 2008. Indeed, Kung Fu Panda 4 is set to open way beyond our expectations, with Deadline’s early numbers predicting a potential $55 million opening in the cards. Dune: Part Two slips to second place with about $44 million on the books. While Panda will be this weekend’s champ, Dune is the real winner in many ways. Consider this – the film posted a huge $82 million opening last weekend and has only posted a 47% week-to-week drop, which is exceedingly rare for a tentpole movie. In just a week, the movie has already beaten the lifetime gross of the first film at the domestic box office (although we should remember that it opened during the pandemic).

Plot: A woman returns to her childhood home to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and unhappy that she abandoned him.
Review: 2024 has already not been a great year for Blumhouse horror films. Night Swim absolutely sunk on release and I can’t imagine a world where Imaginary does well. Because everything about this PG-13 horror venture feels tired and uninspired. That’s not a massive surprise, as the trailer induced groans at nearly every screening I’ve attended over the last few months. But whenever these kinds of movies are released, I always wonder: is there at least some dumb fun to be had? Unfortunately, this one is nearly barren of entertainment value.
Imaginary follows a young artist named Jessica (DeWanda Wise) as she returns to her childhood home with her new husband and stepkids, Alice and Taylor. There’s a mystery around what...

Ahead of the acclaimed horror flick’s arrival later this month, check out the full-length trailer for Late Night With The Devil.
There are plenty of reasons why we’re fully on board for the upcoming horror flick, Late Night With The Devil.
It has a retro 1970s feel that looks incredible. It also has the wonderful David Dastmalchian (who often appears in smaller but memorable roles) getting a leading role. Then there’s the festival buzz which has been very strong indeed. Oh, and there’s also the fact that horror hasn’t really found its feet yet here in 2024.
Whilst it wasn’t terrible, Night Swim didn’t have anywhere near the same impact that Blumhouse’s traditional year-opening horror has in the past, and we feel like we’re waiting for the first truly rousing chiller of the year to get the cinematic scares up and running.

In the year of our Lord Cthulhu 2024, it's abundantly clear what the general aims of the Blumhouse production company are: to make a variety of mid- to low-budget genre features that contain any sort of hook which will make a return on their investment. The 21st century's version of old exploitation companies like Empire International Pictures and New World Pictures, Blumhouse occasionally produces a breakout prestige genre film, but more often than not they're making, y'know, "Night Swim."
Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. Jason Blum and company know that horror fans love a balanced diet, happily taking their veggies along with their french fries. One of the most "french fry" movies Blumhouse ever made was 2018's "Truth or Dare," a film in which the most famous high school party game turns deadly once a supernatural element forces the players to either participate or forfeit their lives.

Blumhouse is the premiere destination for horror in Hollywood. From homegrown franchises such as "The Purge" to reviving classics like "Halloween," they hit it out of the park time and time again, with few misses in between. Because they also tend to keep budgets low, even their misses tend not to be disastrous. That brings us to "Imaginary," the latest Blumhouse horror film that is undoubtedly aiming to become their next franchise. It is not to be confused with "If," the family-friendly imaginary friends movie starring Ryan Reynolds. So, can this scary teddy bear flick deliver the goods at the box office? Or will this be a more middling result?
Though Universal almost always distributes Blumhouse's theatrical features, Lionsgate is handling this one, which hails from director Jeff Wadlow ("Truth or Dare"). It, at present, appears to have a solid chance at becoming another winner for the studio when it opens next weekend,...

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, has been available to watch on the Netflix streaming service for over a month, and now we’re getting ready for the April 19th release of the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. With its release date just two months away, Rebel Moon Part Two has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board: PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, brief strong language and suicide. Also earning a PG-13 rating this week is the Blumhouse horror film Imaginary, which reaches theatres on March 8th. Imaginary got its PG-13 for some violent content, drug material and language.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Night Swim Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Heoferie, and Gavin Warren
Director: Bryce McGuire
Night Swim Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: The initial premise is fascinating, and just there, you can imagine the movie going to a very compelling and scary place.
What’s Bad: The film doesn’t know what to add to its premise to take the story somewhere that doesn’t feel cliché or overdone.
Loo Break: There are many, especially during the second act when the movie tries to make you feel like it is scary when it is not.
Watch or Not?: There are many better options if you are looking for a horror film. This film is a pass.
Language: English (with subtitles).
Available On: Theaters
Runtime: 98 Minutes

The Beekeeper Worldwide Box Office Updates! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
After the unexpected failure of The Expendables 4, Jason Statham is back on the big screens to try his luck with The Beekeeper. And this time, he’s living beyond the expectations. The American action thriller film directed by David Ayer has crossed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office. Below are all the details you need to know!
The Beekeeper hit the theatre screens on January 12, 2024. There remains little competition at the ticket windows, which is working in favor of this thriller flick. Of course, Timothee Chalamet’s blockbusters Wonka and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom also continue to add footfalls. But they released back around December, so there is no comparison.

If you pay attention to the box office even a little bit, or even if you're just a moviegoer hoping to find something new to watch at your local multiplex, you've probably noticed that there hasn't been all that much on offer over the last few weeks. "The Beekeeper," "Mean Girls," and "Night Swim" are truly the only mass-appeal, wide-release movies we've had through the entire month of January (all due respect to "I.S.S."). As a result, several 2023 holdovers are still pulling in money nearly two months later, with Universal and Illumination's "Migration" benefitting greatly from the sheer lack of product in the marketplace.
This past weekend, the animated original feature pulled in $4.9 million, which was good enough to give it the number four spot on the charts. This is the movie's sixth weekend in theaters and here it is, able to easily stay in the domestic top five with...

After kicking off 2024 with discussions on the better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (listen), the surprisingly progressive Killer Condom (listen) and the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant, we’re wrapping up January with a conversation about Christian E. Christiansen‘s pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate.
The Roommate sees Sara (Minka Kelly), a young design student from Iowa, arrive for college in Los Angeles. Her wealthy roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester), is more than eager to take Sara under her wing and show her the ropes. The two become close, but when Sara begins to branch out and make more friends on campus, Rebecca becomes resentful. This brings out her more psychotic tendencies as she embarks on a mission to prove that Sara only needs one best friend: her.
